The Health Minister has repeatedly mistakenly referred to a new "960 bed block" coming on stream at University Hospital Limerick when questioned on overcrowding in the Dáil. The comments were made in response to Labour TD Conor Sheehan, who raised concerns over UHL being by far the busiest hospital in the country yesterday, when the INMO recorded over 100 patients on trolleys. The first of two new 96 bed blocks is expected to be built at Dooradoyle by September, but this will only increase bed capacity in real terms by 71. Responding to Deputy Sheehan, Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill says the discharge rate at the hospital is improving.

The majority of primary school teachers believe preparation for Confirmation or Communion shouldn't take place in the classroom. The findings were unveiled at the Irish National Teachers Organisation's national conference in Galway. Just over one thousand teachers reponsded to this questionnaire by the INMO. Just 4 per cent believe the responsibility of communion and confirmation should take place within schools. The same survey found a third of the teachers taught religion willingly, 20 per cent said they'd prefer if they didn't have to And the same amount said they would prefer not to instruct in only one particular faith. The Catholic Church is currently in charge of nine out of ten primary schools. We sent Adam McCallig out on to the streets of Ennis to find out what people's views on this are. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by INTO Vice-President, Brendan Horan, and Principal of St Flannan's College, Fr Ignatius McCormack. HSE MidWest is urging members of the public to avoid attending hospital if possible amid the adverse weather conditions. Disruptions to scheduled care, cancellations and staffing deficits are expected throughout this week for both community and outpatient services. University Hospital Limerick is continuing to deal with high levels of presentations due to a surge in flu cases, with the INMO recording 122 patients on trolleys during this morning's rounds alone. HSE Midwest Regional Clinical Director Catherine Peters is also imploring people to observe caution amid the treacherous conditions, as large numbers are presenting with trauma injuries from slips, trips and falls.
A vigil to remember victims of overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick will be held tomorrow. The event, organised by the MidWest Hospital Campaign will take place outside the main gates of the Dooradoyle facility at 4pm on New Year's Eve. UHL has remained by far the most overcrowded hospital in the country this year, with the INMO recording 1,690 patients on trolleys there outside of weekends and bank holidays, so far this month. Midwest Hospital Campaign Spokesperson Melanie Cleary says issue cannot be left on the back burner any longer and that the vigil serves as a means of bringing loved ones into 2025 with their families.
The Health Minister is being urged to provide clarity on efforts to tackle staffing deficits at University Hospital Limerick. Minister Stephen Donnelly has disputed claims that 240 nursing vacancies exist at UHL, even though this was confirmed by former UL Hospitals Group CEO Colette Cowan in a parliamentary question reply in August, which quoted HSE figures. According to the INMO, it currently takes a minimum of six months to fill vacant nursing and midwifery roles. Kilrush Independent TD Violet-Anne Wynne believes safe staffing levels are not in place at the region's main hospital.

The Department of Health's Chief Nursing Officer has addressed concerns over safe staffing levels at UHL. It comes amid reports from the INMO that 2,000 nursing and midwifery posts remain unfilled nationwide, and claims 200 vacancies exist at UHL.
Cold water has been poured on the prospect of a statutory inquiry into the death of Shannon Teenager Aoife Johnston at University Hospital Limerick. It follows a special meeting of the Oireachtas Health Committee this week, which confirmed the timeline for HIQA's impending review of Emergency Department capacity in the MidWest cannot be expedited. The bulk of the meeting was dedicated to issues arising at University Hospital Limerick and saw the MidWest HSE Regional Executive Officer, the Chief Nursing Officer and Health Minister all in attendance. Several TDs and Senators levelled criticism at the absence of the former Beaumont Hospital CEO, Ian Carter who has this week been appointed to lead day to day operations at Dooradoyle. Responding to Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway, Minister Stephen Donnelly confirmed the timeline for HIQA's MidWest ED report could not be expedited ahead of next Summer due to the workload involved. But not before tensions flared between the coalition colleagues over both party's respective handling of the health portfolio. The meeting was held just days after the solicitor for the family of Shannon Teenager Aoife Johnston called for a statutory inquiry to be held into the circumstances of her tragic death at University Hospital Limerick in December 2022. The Clarke Report published into her death last month was prohibited from resolving conflicting evidence provided by nurses and doctors on duty relating to the events of her death. Six people are currently facing a disciplinary process in relation to Aoife's death, in what's the largest action of its kind in the HSE's history. Responding to Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe, Minister Donnelly insists the Johnston family will receive a state apology if desired, but says statutory inquiries could interfere with ongoing disciplinary procedures. The Department of Health's Chief Nursing Officer also addressed concerns over safe staffing levels at UHL. It comes amid reports from the INMO that 2,000 nursing and midwifery posts remain unfilled nationwide, amid claims 200 vacancies exist at UHL. Responding to Kilrush Independent Deputy Violet-Anne Wynne, CNO Rachel Kenna says an over-reliance on agency staff at Dooradoyle has led to unsafe situations. Issues relating to the disproportionate cancellations of scheduled care at Ennis General Hospital were also raised with Ennis Hospital seeing more deferrals of day case surgeries than any other facility in the MidWest. Health campaigners have since voiced concern that not only were vital appointments postponed, but that skilled consultants were also left idle, while the county hospital was deployed for it's overflow beds. HSE MidWest REO Sandra Broderick has pledged to investigate the matter.
Nurses and Midwives say the aftershock of the HSE's recruitment embargo continues to heavily impact overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick. Although the controversial cost saving measure was lifted in July, the INMO is set to ballot its members for industrial action as 2,000 nursing and midwifery posts remain unfilled nationwide. The ban was in place for nine months and applied to all grades of nurses and doctors, with only consultants and Emergency Department staff exempt. INMO MidWest Representative Mary Fogarty has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that urgent intervention is needed to ensure Winter trolley numbers don't spiral out of control at UHL.

2,285 admitted patients were left waiting for beds at University Hospital Limerick in total this month, which is 1,180 more people on trolleys than the next busiest facility; Cork University Hospital. The INMO says that despite an expert team being in the Dooradoyle facility for the month of May, there was only six days when there was less than one hundred people on trolleys at UHL. This week, the Government has announced that by 2028 an additional 84 acute inpatient beds will be delivered at UHL, an additional 48 will come on stream at Ennis General, and 24 beds will go to Nenagh Community Hospital. Speaking to Clare FM's Morning Focus though, the Health Minister admits increased capacity is needed immediately to combat overcrowding in the region, but insists the delivery of beds takes sufficient time. Stephen Donnelly says that capacity alone won't solve the problem and that patient care reforms at UHL need to come in line with national trends. The leader of the main opposition party, meanwhile, claims while it's committed to providing the public healthcare services in Clare, the Government will not. Under Sinn Féin's alternative plan, launched this month, the party is promising an elective only hospital for the region and making Ennis General a 24/7 Urgent Care Centre. In February, 758 children were waiting to undergo dental procedures in the MidWest and Sinn Féin's is pledging to increase dental training places nationwide by 32%. Speaking during a visit to Clare, Sinn Féin Leader Deputy Mary-Lou McDonald says the coalitions approach lacks all common sense.
The Health Minister says the HSE's recruitment embargo is not responsible for poor patient outcomes at University Hospital Limerick. The comments were made during a sitting of the Oireachtas Petitions Committee yesterday, which discussed the MidWest Hospital Campaign's request for the reopening of Accident & Emergency departments at Ennis, Nenagh and St.Johns. So far this week, the INMO has recorded 445 patients on trolleys at UHL, which is 78% higher than the next busiest facility over this period; Cork University Hospital. Responding to Sinn Féin Senator Paul Gavan, Minister Stephen Donnelly says that despite receiving "unprecedented additional resources" UHL is not seeing the results it should.

A Clare Government Senator is calling for a third new 96-bed block to be approved and delivered at University Hospital Limerick in order to tackle legacy capacity issues. It comes as the third HIQA Report in a row, published this week found patient privacy and dignity continues to be impacted by overcrowding. On it's latest unannounced visit the Health Inspection and Quality Authority found the level of overcrowding at Dooradoyle's Emergency Department was not consistent with a human-rights based approach to care. According to HIQA, University Hospital Limerick's Emergency Department has planned capacity for only 49 service users, but last year an average of 219 patients atended the ED every single day. Despite this, a Clare member of the Oireachtas Health Committee claims reopening a 24/7 Accident Emergency Department in Ennis goes against the wishes of the INMO and the Irish Medical Organisation. There are currently two-new 96 bed blocks planned for UHL which promise to increase bed capacity by 167 in real terms by 2027. But Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway believes until the clinical advice says otherwise, commitment to a third new 96 bed-block at UHL is the most practical solution for now. The Health Minister has commissioned a review though led by MidWest Regional Healthcare Executive Officer Sandra Broderick, that will analyse if another A&E is needed at either Ennis, Nenagh and St.Johns. HIQA's latest report found once again though that patient flow continues to be ineffectively managed at the region's main hospital. Speaking on the floor of the Dáil, Stephen Donnelly says the issue needs to be urgently resolved to improve patient outcomes at the hospital. A Clare Independent TD though believes the Minister must inject as much funding as possible into Ennis Hospital in order to maximise capacity there. Kilrush Deputy Violet Anne-Wynne claims that contrary to government predictions, the second 96-bed block currently planned for UHL is not due to come on stream until the third quarter of 2028. She insists that capital investment is needed in Ennis now as the reopening of the A&E is inevitable.

Fresh calls are being made for an urgent commitment from government to reopen the Ennis Accident & Emergency Unit. It comes after the INMO recorded 143 patients on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick yesterday, which is the second-highest level of overcrowding ever seen at an Irish hospital. UHL is currently at its highest state of escalation, and as a result, elective surgeries there, as well as at Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's have been cancelled today, with only urgent and time-critical patients, including cancer patients going ahead. Shannon area Sinn Féin local election candidate, James Ryan insists the situation is unacceptable for both patients and staff.
The Taoiseach claims that improved management and clinical leadership is required at University Hospital Limerick to help alleviate overcrowding. It comes on a day in which the INMO recorded 116 patients on trolleys at the Dooradoyle facility, just one week after UHL broke its own record for hospital overcrowding on two separate occassions. The development has led to renwed calls from local lobby groups, for the government to reinstate Accident and Emergency Units at Ennis, Nenagh and St.Johns. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says though that while money is being pumped into enhance services at the regions Model Two Hospitals, there are more factors at play.
A Clare Government TD believes re-opening an Accident and Emergency Unit in Ennis should be achieved in the medium to long term. It's after it emerged the CEO of the UL Hospitals Group went a period of leave within the same week of record overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick. 116 patients were without a bed at the region's main hospital this morning, according to INMO figures, marking the seventeeth day in succession in which the trolley count at Dooradoyle has been in the triple digits. Last week, the CEO of the UL Hospitals Group, Professor Collette Cowan took an official leave period, within the same week that the record for Irish hospital overcrowding was breached twice at UHL. Calls are now growing from Clare's elected representatives in both government and opposition for the executive body of ULHG to appear before an Oireachtas Committee. Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator and Oireachtas Health Committee member, Martin Conway believes that while there must be accountability for poor patient outcomes at UHL, he insists the government will spare no expense in resolving healthcare deficits in the region. Meanwhile, Clare's Fianna Fáil TD believes the focus must remain on upgrading the services available at Ennis General Hospital. Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe says while the immediate goal should be expanding operating hours at the Medical Assessment and Local Injury Units, reopening the Accident and Emergency Unit in Ennis should be a medium to long-term aspiration.
