When Ann Crile Esselstyn, tells you to do something, you do it! So, when she told me I had to interview today's guest, I didn't hesitate. Ruth Morley is an adventurer. She's rarely at home in Cincinnati because she's usually found on a hiking trail. I'm talking about the Appalachian Trail, the Florida Trail, the Buckeye Trail, and Kilimanjaro…just to name just a few.  She's even ridden her bike 3,000 miles across the country and competed in dozens of marathons and triathlons.  Oh, and did I mention that Ruth (known by her trail name, “Ruthless!”) is 70 years old and 100% PLANTSTRONG?  Today, she tells us how she prepares all of her food for these multi-week adventures and shares the details of her equipment and intricate logistics as a solo hiker.  This conversation is inspiring, informative, and downright motivational – not just to do these super-long hikes - but to do anything that is out of your comfort zone.  Her slogan? “Make plans, not excuses.”    Episode Highlights

Andreu: [0:18] Ei, Sílvia! Com va això? Sílvia: [0:20] Anem fent, i tu? Andreu: [0:21] Anem fent, anem fent. Sílvia: [0:49] A veure, a veure. Nicole Bitter is a professional ultramarathon runner for Altra who has one of the most decorated running resumes in the sport to date. At one point she ran the fastest 100-mile time in North America on Trail, she's placed top 10 at Western States multiple times, won flagship races like Javelina Jundred and Black Canyon, and the list goes on. So, it's safe to say that when it comes to performing at a very high level in ultrarunning, Nicole is one of the go-to persons to listen to! But what is even more fascinating about her career is how she's been able to develop such a sustainable career and how she continues to enjoy running just as much as when she first got into the sport. And in this episode, she breaks down how that's helped her become so successful and to create such a sustainable career. In this episode, Nicole breaks down the mindset shifts she's made throughout her career that helped her to perform better at races (and how to enjoy them more), how she balances a full-time job on top of being a professional athlete, and what she's learned along the years of her career that has helped her to continue to show up on the podium. Huge thank you to Nicole for making this episode happen and good luck to her as she heads into UTCT this weekend! Welcome to Episode 54 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring Dr. Kelly Pritchett PhD, RDN, CSSD and Keely Henninger. Kelly is a Sports Dietitian, Professor in nutrition and exercise science at Central Washington University, and an endurance runner. In Episode 36, she came on my show to discuss current research on a variety of nutrition topics, and she returns today to speak about two of her own studies, one that was published this year, and another that is in the works, in collaboration with Keely. Both studies examine the link between underfueling, exercise dependence, body dissatisfaction and performance among endurance runners. Keely Henninger is an elite runner with Altra, a scientist, and one of the podcasts hosts of Trail Society. Keely has been on the trail and ultra racing scene for may years, and holds a number of race wins and other accomplishments, including being a member of Team USA, holding the USA 50-mile national champion title, two wins at Lake Sonoma 50, and a top 10 finish at Western States. Keely joins us for this episode to discuss a research study that she has been conducting with Kelly, and she also shares some of her own nutrition journey as a high-performing athlete. I had a great discussion with these two amazing women on changing the narrative around fueling in endurance sport. We covered the importance of weight and body composition to performance, the appropriateness of weight periodization in recreational runners, the prevalence of underfueling in endurance athletes, and so much more. Thank you Kelly and Keely for your time and for the important work you are both doing to improve our sport!Without further ado, please enjoy my discussion with Kelly Pritchett and Keely Henninger on their recent research on fueling in the endurance athlete population.Links & Resources:Here is the link to the first research study that we discuss (aka “The Olympic Trial Study”)Follow Keely on Instagram and Twitter (@runwidkeel)Follow Kelly on Instagram and Twitter (@KPritchettRD)Other Announcements:Please show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on iTunes Music Credit: Joseph McDadeHave nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback?

This included having a fuelling and hydration plan dialed in and controlling for what she could. Preparation is key to success, but even with the best plans, unexpected obstacles still come along. Keely's rolled ankle during Western States is one such example, and we talk about dealing with running heartbreak and not finishing races. But even in the midst of disappointment, Keely and I emphasize the importance of recognizing wins along the way: successfully executing race day cooling strategies and nutrition plans were big wins for Keely.  We talk about fueling training and racing, and how the default recommendations and tendency to “get by” on the least amount of food and fluid during workouts is performance limiting. Keely and I discuss the difference between pushing through challenges and unnecessary suffering, factors that apply to both training and nutrition: sport is hard enough as it is, and fueling and recovering appropriately can help you avoid unnecessary suffering and reach your potential. We debunk the fear of overfueling and laugh about the fun with food that trail runners embrace! This includes incorporating real and “junk” food as well as typical gels and sports nutrition products. Transitioning to Keely's career in science and research, she shares her interest in medicine and female athlete physiology. She talks about some of the studies she's been involved in around neuroscience, exercise and biomechanics, as well as her previous work at Nike researching and designing women-specific footwear and apparel.  As an independent researcher, Keely is currently looking into the nutrition and training practices of male and female athletes of all ages. She is exploring the link between underfueling, exercise dependence and performance, and we briefly touch on this. Keely and I talk about the need for more research into female athletes, especially studies correlating fueling adequately and maintaining a menstrual cycle with optimum performance and reduced injuries.

251. How 2x Olympian Kara Goucher Handles Expectations, Pressure, and Pre-Race Anxiety

This week's guest on the podcast needs no introduction. As one of America's most dominant female runners, Kara Goucher earned a spot on the Olympic team in the 10,000 meters in 2008, and the marathon in 2012. She was second in the 10,000 meters at the World Championships in Osaka and placed third in both the Boston and New York City marathons. Kara has retired from competitive running but remains an active presence as an athlete advisor for Oiselle and Altra.  She is a sports analyst and broadcaster for NBC Sports, and had an opportunity to be on the other side of the camera as a color commentator at the Tokyo Olympics. Competitive from a young age when she would regularly beat all the boys, Kara has learned how to handle pressure and expectations throughout her career. Although Kara dealt with pressure at an elite level, that feeling is something all runners can relate to. Whether it's the expectations you set for yourself, feeling pressure from other individuals, or comparing your accomplishments with other runners, the burden of pressure can be overwhelming when you aren't able to manage it. But nervousness and pre-race jitters can also mean that you are invested in what you are about to do. When you learn how to channel that adrenaline to help instead of hurt, you can use pressure to your benefit. Kara and I cover a lot of ground on the podcast this week, including: The pros and cons of feeling pressure, and how to manage it to get the best from yourself The value of personal mantras How that feeling of pressure has evolved for Kara over the course of her career Kara's intense preparation for broadcasting races, and her goals as a commentator What makes a good race for Kara as a runner and as an an analyst And perhaps most importantly, if and when she's starting a podcast with Des Linden! This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker, one of the most reputable blood testing companies in the world. They were founded in 2009 by aging, genetics, and biometrics scientists to help you analyze your body's data and get a firm idea of how well you're responding to training. Understanding your body's biomarkers, from stress hormones to testosterone to Vitamin D, can help you figure out if you're over-training, under-training, optimally training, or if you have a health issue that might be affecting your running. But the best part is that they give you personalized optimal ranges for each of these biomarkers and a host of ways to improve these markers through diet, lifestyle, or exercise changes. I've personally gotten three Ultimate tests from them and the process is simple, easy, and very eye-opening if you haven't done a deep dive on your biomarkers yet.  Of all the investments you can make in your running, this one is like getting a detailed checkup or regularly scheduled maintenance for your internal physiology.  If you're ready to take control of your health and optimize your training, get 25% off any of their blood tests with code STRENGTHRUNNING at InsideTracker. Episode. 200. WHEN did we get here?! Honored to have Kara Goucher joining Hurdle for this milestone! We kick things off in episode 200 by talking about Kara's recent diagnosis of runner's dystonia, what that means, and how it's affecting her emotionally and mentally. We also bring it back to talk about how she fell in love with the sport in the first place with the help of her late grandfather and what it was like losing him to COVID during the pandemic. Plus: Her journey to self acceptance and navigating disordered eating as a college athlete, and the hard work that went into both of Olympic experiences — first as an athlete and then as a commentator for NBC. We cap things off by chatting about the recent campaign for Altra that we were both a part of, highlighting that if you have a body — regardless of size — you are an athlete. I'm so grateful for Kara's openness, and oh-so-amped to photobomb her Boston Marathon coverage.
