Lawrence is joined by Rick Ellis, host of the “Art of Skill” channel on YouTube. Rick is an incredibly creative person obsessed with skill development, excellence, and the highest expression of skill, through artistry. Rick first worked in Hollywood as a recording engineer and videographer before starting his software company in the early days of the internet. After his company made him insane riches, the changing landscape of the early internet saw these riches vanishing, almost as soon as they came. Rick gained a powerful insight into the pursuit of money not being the path to strive for, especially at the expense of spending time on your true passions. Rick now seeks to create artistry through jiujitsu, where he trains and teaches at his Jiujitsu school in Wyoming.
Lawrence is joined by Nick Chapman, the former MMA fighter and Cage Rage light heavyweight champion. Alongside his professional fighting career, he also built several successful businesses, but decided England wasn't the place for him. He freed himself from the shackles of the West, sold everything he had and moved to Thailand. Nick has spent decades proving doubters wrong; no goal was too great, no challenge too daunting. He exudes a growth mindset and an insatiable appetite for hard work that is the ultimate formula to smashing your goals. Today, Nick is sharing some breaking news about bringing the fastest growing combat sport, Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships (BKFC) to Thailand as their new CEO. Nick is a true autodidact, a real inspiration to those who refuse to settle for mediocrity.
Lawrence is joined by Artem Tepler. After coming to America as a child from Communist Russia, Artem soon understood that he could flourish in his new home with the right work ethic and mentality. From his formative years training in traditional martial arts as a boy, and progressing through the belt system to Black Belt in Taekwondo, he developed his “growth mindset”: that anything was possible if he worked hard and grew into his ambitions. After college, his determination for financial success in this “land of opportunities” eventually brought him great wealth from real estate rehabs and development. Like so many, he was overextended during the 2008 real estate crash and briefly went into debt and forced to live in the attic of one of his rental properties. Remembering the track record that brought him his early success, Artem doubled down. He left the West Coast, figuring he might as well be warm if he had to restart his empire. He tapped into his immigrant mentality and inspirational work ethic to propel him into even greater success, moving from smaller rehabs to huge ground up developments. Artem is a voracious reader, a skillful Brazilian jiujitsu practitioner, and is always learning and evolving. He is the epitome of a self-made man.
Lawrence is joined by his longtime jiujitsu instructor, Jay Valko, a lifelong jiujitsu athlete and philosopher with vast interests, specifically, finance and economics, philosophy and political libertarianism. Jay reminisces of his early days of training and his evolution with combat sports. From traditional martial arts to high school wrestling, to the beginning of his jiujitsu journey with Gracie Barra pioneer, Eduardo De Lima in Florida, then finally moving to Chicago and training under the late, great Carlson Gracie. Prior to getting his jiujitsu black belt, he was offered the opportunity to start his own jiujitsu academy and is now a passionate and beloved jiujitsu instructor who gains joy in knowing he is leading and influencing the next generation of competitors through his love for jiujitsu. Jay's world views are profound and inquisitive in nature, and much larger than jiujitsu alone.
Lawrence is joined by Thomas Huisking, a man blessed with male model looks, with the intellectual capacity and emotional intelligence of a wise old stoic. Thomas discussed his life's evolution in pursuit of personal and professional success through constant reinvention. Throughout his life, Thomas has been a bodybuilder, fitness coach, actor and producer in Hollywood, music producer, podcast host, and is now a successful Real Estate agent in Los Angeles. He credits his philosophical outlook in life through the writings of Ayn Rann's “Atlas Shrugged” where he learned the important principles that can lead to a life of success. Thomas is a beacon of positivity and curiosity, and it is always a pleasure when we get to connect!
Lawrence is joined by his former training partner and teammate, Mark Allen. We reminisce about some of our favorite memories from our decade plus in the combat sports world, and how he is dealing with his Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) which he examines in depth, in his fantastic (hilarious, but also gritty, and powerful) new book: “Based on a True, Traumatic, Brain History: A Short Memoir”. Mark is truly “uncommon, amongst uncommon men” and just as I was inspired by his tenacity and fighting spirit when we were gym buddies and gym competitors, I am today inspired by his always positive and pragmatic approach to his “new normal”, and his constant intellectual curiosity. He never allows any self-pity and maintains a growth mindset, along with his strict athlete lifestyle of fasting, constant growth, and commitment to get the most out of this life, regardless of his adversities. It is in hope that Mark's book and wisdom will encourage the new generation of fighters to train smarter, and not just harder. Through it all, neither of us would change those years and the honor of being Teddy Roosevelt's “Man in the Arena”. His new book is available on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Based-True-Traumatic-Brain-History/dp/1796097322
