John speaks with writer and mathematician Bethel McGrew to unpack the cultural and spiritual currents of our time, from navigating political alliances, to countering secular scepticism. She discusses Jordan Peterson's role in sparking spiritual curiosity among young men, while highlighting his hesitation to fully grasp the Gospel's divine message. McGrew also examines the evangelical divide over Donald Trump, the cultural pushback against transgenderism, and the enduring hope offered by Christianity in an age of despair. McGrew also defends the historical reliability of the bible and the resurrection's evidential strength, addressing the claims of modern sceptics. She reflects on the rise of a subversive Christian identity, the need for authentic heroes, and the power of faith to heal social wounds. Bethel McGrew is an American freelance writer and cultural critic. She has published in The Spectator, National Review, First Things, Plough, and many other outlets. She also writes at her Substack: https://www.furtherup.net/.

Prolific author and apologist Dr. Lydia McGrew joins us to look at the reliability of the Bible. She specifically addresses a disagreement that came up on a previous episode that asked if the Gospel writes may have made mistakes or intentional changes to better suit the narrative. Dr. McGrew looks at her life's work as well, including the many coincidences in the Gospels that give them authenticity.

REFLECTION/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:What are some stories from Scripture that you would rather not read? Are there areas in your life where you feel your priorities have shifted, and how can you refocus on your relationship with God?What does the story of Solomon teach us about the consequences of unwise choices, even for successful individuals? How does Solomon's story demonstrate the importance of being aware of our own limitations and inadequacies? What can we learn from Solomon's prayer during the temple dedication (1 Kings 8), despite his actions not aligning with his words? Do your actions align with your faith and devotion to God? Are there areas of your life where you need to more closely align your actions with your beliefs? In light of Solomon's story, how can we better understand and appreciate God's faithfulness and the new covenant through Jesus Christ?
Show NotesIn Part 1, friends of the show John Nelson and Josh Parikh returned as guests and discussed “McGrewvianism”, which is the apologetic approach of partners Tim & Lydia McGrew. Their critiques of McGrewvianism centred largely in lack of engagement in the last 150 years of scholarship into the New Testament documents and they related this extensively to the McGrew's use of ‘Undesigned Coincidences' to establish the historical reliability of the NT narratives.Jonathan McLatchie, who we also consider a friend of the show, is in the McGrew camp and wrote a helpful response blog, which also concentrated on Undesigned Coincidences. In this episode we discuss his responses and we take a wider look at contradictions between texts as a potentially symmetrical opposite concept to Undesigned Coincidences. For our Spring Listener Choice episode, we're looking into what makes consultation for behavior analysts good. Because consultation is like a mountain where you and your client reach the summit together. But don't forget the extra cans of air in case its very tall. And did you remember to pack enough provisions? Or your compass? Some icebreaker games? Perhaps this metaphor is getting away from us, and you should just listen to the episode discussion of relevant research into what makes good, rather than useless, consultation in behavior analysis. This episode is a love story. An interesting one, but a love story nonetheless. Amanda is a fascinating guest, who played D1 basketball, taught PE for over 10 years, founded a dating app, met her future business partner on IG, and then moved to a small town in Wyoming to renovate an old motel. What might have begun as a great investment opportunity turned into a love affair with the town of Greybull, the people and community there, and with renovation. Plus she's documented it all online, with literally a reel a day since she started renovating showing everything she's doing, totally solo! I'll admit, this episode is less about cabins specifically, and more an excuse for me to talk to the human behind one of my favorite IG accounts on the internet (@justdoitamanda), but I will say I think you all are going to enjoy it just as much as I did, and learn a ton along the way. I'm so excited for you to meet Amanda (if you don't know her already), and live vicariously through her bold, ambitious, and inspiring adventure. The Book of Judges says that in the days when Israel had no king, "all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes" (Jdg. 17:6; 21:25). It is a perennial problem for man. Without recognizing or serving Jesus as King of kings and Lord of lords, people will generally do whatever they think is right in their own eyes. This is not just a problem for non-believers, as the text from Judges tells us. God's own people are often guilty of this very thing. This week we continue our conversation with Tim and Bethel McGrew about some of the historical and cultural trends of unbelief and atheism in the West. The McGrews give us some helpful insights you can incorporate with your conversations with non-believers.Bethel McGrew is a high school teacher, math Ph.D., and widely published freelance writer. Her work has appeared in First Things, National Review, The Spectator, and many other national and international outlets. Her Substack, Further Up, is one of the top paid newsletters in "Faith & Spirituality" on the platform. She has also contributed to two essay anthologies on Jordan Peterson. When not writing social criticism, she enjoys writing about literature, film, music, and history. Her edited collection of the World War I letters of Canon A.E. Laurie is forthcoming from the U.K.'s Helion Press. (https://wng.org/authors/bethel-mcgrew).Dr. Timothy McGrew is Professor of Philosophy at Western Michigan University, where he has taught for the past 25 years. His research interests include formal epistemology, the history and philosophy of science, and the history and philosophy of religion. When he is not doing philosophy, he enjoys playing chess online, coaching at his local chess club, running trails, and making high quality paper airplanes. He lives in SW Michigan with his wife, Lydia McGrew, and their daughters (TimothyMcGrew.com).Related Links: Free access to some related Watchman Profiles: Watchman Fellowship 4-page Profile on Atheism by Dr. Robert M. Atheism and unbelief have their origin in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve disobeyed God by listening to the Serpent and partaking of the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Since then, man has continually attempted to hide himself from God, suppressing the knowledge of God in unrighteousness. That unrighteousness and unbelief has taken many different forms throughout history. This week and next we feature our interview with philosopher Timothy McGrew and his daughter Bethel. We discuss some of the historical and cultural trends of unbelief in Western civilization and how they continue to influence unbelief today.Bethel McGrew is a high school teacher, math Ph.D., and widely published freelance writer. In today's media environment, there's no shortage of information and disinformation – so how do we know if we're being misled? How can young people know? The ability to tell fact from fiction is vital for maintaining a healthy civil society, and researchers are exploring how to teach these skills. On this episode, Brett speaks with Sarah McGrew, a cutting-edge researcher in this area. After earning her PhD at Stanford in 2019, she joined the faculty at the University of Maryland, where she has several ongoing studies about fostering students' media literacy. On this episode, she discusses her research, key findings, and practical advice for educators and parents. Flowers, McGrew and that Other Guy, then Gregory Boyd Subtitle: The Dividing Line 2024 Speaker: Dr. James White Broadcaster: Alpha and Omega Ministries Event: Podcast Date: 1/18/2024 Length: 68 min.
We premiered the new video opening by Tim Bushong for Radio Free Geneva- So there is a new addition to the clips including in A Mighty Fortress, and then Jeff Durbin did the new closer about our new bunker under Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. We started with a one minute video from Leighton Flowers including some of the most absurd assertions by Warren McGrew. Then we moved to an almost ten minute presentation against Calvinism by Gregory Boyd from a number of years ago.--Then right at the end, I took the time to address, briefly, the controversy that erupted yesterday over comments by Alistair Begg in an interview four months ago wherein he counseled a grandmother to attend the wedding of a grandchild -marrying- a transgender person.
