How does philosophy inform modern physics? And how do physicists incorporate philosophy into their research? On this episode, we dive into those questions with philosopher Dr. Timothy McGrew and astrophysicist Dr. Luke Barnes in order to help you fine tune your thinking about the fine tuning of the universe. Critics of the fine-tuning argument will often invoke probabilities in order to get around the argument's deeper implication of the existence of God. Tim and Luke will explore some of the issues in probability theory as it informs the physics of the fine-tuning argument. Dr. Timothy McGrewTimothy McGrew is Professor of Philosophy at Western Michigan University, where he has taught for the past 25 years. His research interests include formal epistemology, the history and philosophy of science, and the history and philosophy of religion. When he is not doing philosophy, he enjoys playing chess online, coaching at his local chess club, running trails, and making high quality paper airplanes. He lives in SW Michigan with his wife, Lydia McGrew, and their daughters.Dr. Luke BarnesDr Luke A. Barnes is a Senior Lecturer in Physics at Western Sydney University. With a PhD in astronomy from the University of Cambridge, he has published papers in the field of galaxy formation and on the fine-tuning of the Universe for life. He is the coauthor with Prof. Geraint Lewis of A Fortunate Universe: Life in a Finely-Tuned Cosmos and The Cosmic Revolutionary's Handbook: (Or: How to Beat the Big Bang), published by Cambridge University Press. As OpenAI's former Head of Research, Bob McGrew witnessed the company's evolution from GPT-3's breakthrough to today's reasoning models. He argues that there are three legs of the stool for AGI—Transformers, scaled pre-training, and reasoning—and that the fundamentals that will shape the next decade-plus are already in place. He thinks 2025 will be defined by reasoning while pre-training hits diminishing returns. Bob discusses why the agent economy will price services at compute costs due to near-infinite supply, fundamentally disrupting industries like law and medicine, and how his children use ChatGPT to spark curiosity and agency. From robotics breakthroughs to managing brilliant researchers, Bob offers a unique perspective on AI's trajectory and where startups can still find defensible opportunities. SCRIPTURE: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, 7:29, 8:16-17, 11:6, & 12:9-14 REFLECTION/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:What does the poem from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 teach us about timing in our lives? Can you think of a specific time in your life when you had to choose the right moment to act? How did that choice impact your situation?Have you ever experienced a time when waiting for something made it more meaningful? How can that influence the way you approach challenges today? The sermon mentions that 'God made humankind upright, but they have sought many evil schemes' (Ecclesiastes 7:29). What do you think this means? The closing instruction of Ecclesiastes is to 'fear God and keep His commandments.' How do you feel about this? What can you learn from it?In what ways does the concept of 'vapors' or 'smoke' relate to our understanding of life's uncertainty? How do you deal with uncertainty in your own life? Do you find it challenging to trust in God during those times?
John speaks with writer and mathematician Bethel McGrew to unpack the cultural and spiritual currents of our time, from navigating political alliances, to countering secular scepticism. She discusses Jordan Peterson's role in sparking spiritual curiosity among young men, while highlighting his hesitation to fully grasp the Gospel's divine message. McGrew also examines the evangelical divide over Donald Trump, the cultural pushback against transgenderism, and the enduring hope offered by Christianity in an age of despair. McGrew also defends the historical reliability of the bible and the resurrection's evidential strength, addressing the claims of modern sceptics. She reflects on the rise of a subversive Christian identity, the need for authentic heroes, and the power of faith to heal social wounds. Bethel McGrew is an American freelance writer and cultural critic. She has published in The Spectator, National Review, First Things, Plough, and many other outlets. She also writes at her Substack: https://www.furtherup.net/.

For our Spring Listener Choice episode, we're looking into what makes consultation for behavior analysts good. Because consultation is like a mountain where you and your client reach the summit together. But don't forget the extra cans of air in case its very tall. And did you remember to pack enough provisions? Or your compass? Some icebreaker games? Perhaps this metaphor is getting away from us, and you should just listen to the episode discussion of relevant research into what makes good, rather than useless, consultation in behavior analysis. This episode is a love story. An interesting one, but a love story nonetheless. Amanda is a fascinating guest, who played D1 basketball, taught PE for over 10 years, founded a dating app, met her future business partner on IG, and then moved to a small town in Wyoming to renovate an old motel. What might have begun as a great investment opportunity turned into a love affair with the town of Greybull, the people and community there, and with renovation. Plus she's documented it all online, with literally a reel a day since she started renovating showing everything she's doing, totally solo! I'll admit, this episode is less about cabins specifically, and more an excuse for me to talk to the human behind one of my favorite IG accounts on the internet (@justdoitamanda), but I will say I think you all are going to enjoy it just as much as I did, and learn a ton along the way. I'm so excited for you to meet Amanda (if you don't know her already), and live vicariously through her bold, ambitious, and inspiring adventure. We premiered the new video opening by Tim Bushong for Radio Free Geneva- So there is a new addition to the clips including in A Mighty Fortress, and then Jeff Durbin did the new closer about our new bunker under Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. We started with a one minute video from Leighton Flowers including some of the most absurd assertions by Warren McGrew. Then we moved to an almost ten minute presentation against Calvinism by Gregory Boyd from a number of years ago.--Then right at the end, I took the time to address, briefly, the controversy that erupted yesterday over comments by Alistair Begg in an interview four months ago wherein he counseled a grandmother to attend the wedding of a grandchild -marrying- a transgender person.
