Otavio Sousa Full Name: Otávio Ferreira de Sousa Nickname: Although seldom used, ‘The Steamroller' has been mentioned as a nickname by some of the media, this would be due to his strength and the fast pace he usually imposes in his fights. Lineage: Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Carlos Gracie Junior > Otavio Sousa Main Achievements: IBJJF World Champion (2016/2013/2012) IBJJF Pan American Champion (2020/2017/2010/2009) IBJJF Pan American No-Gi Champion (2015) CBJJ Brazilan Nationals Champion (2019) IBJJF New York Open Champion (2012) IBJJF Las Vegas Open Champion (2011) IBJJF World Championship Runner-up (2014) IBJJF World No-Gi Championship Runner-up (2009) IBJJF Pan American Championship Runner-up (2019/2009*/2008) CBJJ Brazilian National Championship Runner-up (2017) IBJJF World Championship 3rd Place (2017/2009/2008) IBJJF World No-Gi Championship 3rd Place (2015/2011) IBJJF Pan American Championship 3rd Place (2016/2011) Main Achievements (Colored Belts): IBJJF World Champion (2007* brown) IBJJF World Championship Runner-up (2007 brown) IBJJF Pan American Championship Runner-up (2007 brown) CBJJ Brazilian National Championship Runner-up (2004 purple) IBJJF European Open Championship Runner-up (2008/2007 brown) * Absolute ** Weight and absolute Favorite Position/Technique: Omoplata Weight Division: Peso Médio (82kg/181lbs) Team/Association: Gracie Barra Otavio Sousa Biography Otavio Sousa was born in July 1986 in Recife, State of Pernambuco – Brazil. He started training jiu-jitsu when he was 13 years old, after an invitation from a friend who already trained at Recife's Gracie Barra headquarters. The Gracie Barra – Recife was an academy led by José Olímpio (also known as “Zé Radiola”), a charismatic instructor who developed several high-level athletes, including Braulio Estima, Victor Estima, Bruno Alves to mention a few. At the Gracie Barra academy, Otavio Sousa became one of the main names in the lower ranks of BJJ earning himself several titles, including a world championship in 2007 as a brown belt. After his win at the Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, Otavio Sousa earned his black belt from the hands of Carlos Gracie Junior, the head of the Gracie Barra franchise. E.N.: Though Otavio Sousa was mainly coached by José Olímpio, it was common practice within Gracie Barra to have the founder of the academy hand the black belts. After receiving his black belt, Otavio Sousa was invited to lead the Gracie Barra Academy in Irvine, California which was owned by Chris Pizzo. Sousa worked there a few years, but that relationship ended unexpectedly in unfortunate circumstances. According to the many internet forums who debated the issue at the time, Otavio was fired by E-mail while on vacation, by the gym's owner. The reason for the dismissal (according to Pizzo) was that Otavio spent too much time competing and touring for seminars, while not dedicating enough effort to the gym. This went against many of Sousa's student's beliefs who left the academy in a show of support for their instructor. Among the people who followed Otavio out were A-listers such as ‘Budo' Jake, sports commentator, and CEO of the company BudoVideos.
On this episode we chat with the GOAT in the Jiu Jitsu documentary scene Stuart Cooper. I can remember being a young man who was full of piss and vinegar. I was on a mission to become the best BJJ player the world had ever seen. Part of the reason I was so obsessed with the game was because of a man by the name of Stuart Cooper. His short films were so masterfully done that I was all in on the sport. His abiity to capture the perfect shot and have these legends tell their stories was life changing. 15 years later I still watch his youtube channel if I need a pinch of inspiration. On this podcast I was able to pick his brain and learn the genisis of this great man. His journey is equally enthralling and hopefully one day someone will tell his story. Until then our podcast will have to do, lol. Huge thank you Stuart for gifting us with a bit of your time. I had a blast and hopefully we can do it again.

In the 21st Century, strength, endurance, presence of mind, and having a set of well-defined core values is unfairly associated with so-called "toxic masculinity." But is a true warrior mindset toxic, or freeing? Can becoming an ethical warrior enhance your personal life and your business? In this interesting conversation, well-known martial artist, MMA trainer, and nutrition expert Daniel Leith talks to Sean about accessing the warrior culture the right way, focusing on the safety and prosperity of others first. These life and business lessons apply to both men and women and are values worth instilling in your children. Whether you're a real estate agent, life coach, insurance agent, brick and mortar store owner, or serial entrepreneur, creating a healthy business CULTURE is essential. In this fascinating Safe and Sound podcast episode, retirement expert and ardent martial artist Sean Sparkman interviews Daniel Leith, a martial arts instructor and entrepreneur. Daniel has been a Gracie Barra team member since 2015, building his martial arts career from his love of wrestling. After wrestling throughout middle school and high school, Dan joined the Marine Corps, where he was first introduced to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As he continued his Jiu Jitsu training, Dan quickly developed into one of the fasted growing and most sought after weight management and performance nutritionists in the world. Some of his recent clients include UFC Light Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier 2 time UFC Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, UFC Middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and Grammy-nominated recording artist Demi Lovato. As a Marine Corps infantry veteran, Dan was a Bronze Star recipient with Combat “V”. In 2010 Dan was sent to instruct in Quantico VA at the Marine Corps Martial Arts Center of Excellence. He spent his last three years of service teaching hand to hand combat to his fellow Marines. Daniel Leith received his 4th Degree Black Belt in the Marine Corps martial arts system before being honorably discharged in 2013. In this episode I speak with Coach Ricky Pachon . A young coach from Gracie Barra, Bondi Beach, Australia. Ricky leads a successful youth competition team and is himself an avid competitor on the Australian BJJ/Grappling scene. Recently a parent of a student of Ricky reached out to me to introduce him. Following several years of employing a high-repetition traditional approach to developing his youth team. Ricky has in recent months been another coach to fall down the ecological rabbit hole. Ricky's enthusiasm and energy spills out when he talks about coaching and training and it's clear, despite his age he is well on his way to becoming a high level bjj coach and ambassador for the sport. Ricky talks about his recent transition to a ecological approach and we discuss the reception of his student and fellow coaches. You can get in touch with Ricky and follow him on his IG page.I look forward to watching this passionate coach and his team grow and thrive in the coming years.
