Reality TV, or at least TV that vaguely resembles reality, takes over the podcast this week. First, Neal Pollack welcomes in Rick Ellis, from the Too Much TV sub stack, to discuss Neal's thesis that TV food competitions have reached their "decadent endgame." Rick doesn't quite agree. His thesis is that Jeffrey Zaslav and the other Warner Brothers Discovery executives who run the Food Network have just realized they can make more profit by producing fewer episodes. They both criticize, somewhat lightly, that Top Chef has become little more than a feeder ramp for bad Food Network shows. Rick, much to Neal's surprise, has little bad to say about 'House of Knives,' which Neal considers to be the absolute nadir of the food competition genre. Neither of them are willing to offer any praise to 'Wildcard Kitchen,' which feels phony and derivative. Regardless, this is the deepest dive into the politics and machinations of food competition TV as you're ever likely to hear anywhere.More discussed in the zeitgeist is 'Love Is Blind,' which recently concluded its 8th season with a couple of high-profile jiltings, one at the altar itself, because the betrothed couldn't agree on politics. In both cases, it was liberal women rejecting conservative or at least apolitical men. Neal and guest Rachel Llewellyn parse what this actually portends for society. It used to be the case that people in romantic relationships could disagree on politics, at least as regards some issues. Love Is Blind is really just a symptom of a larger societal illness where people are no longer allowed to disagree. Many of them simply exist in different realities entirely. These are sad times, especially if you're competing in a cooking show against someone who you might want to marry but cannot because you hold different political opinions than they do on important issues of the day.Enjoy the podcast!

Lawrence is joined by Rick Ellis, host of the “Art of Skill” channel on YouTube. Rick is an incredibly creative person obsessed with skill development, excellence, and the highest expression of skill, through artistry. Rick first worked in Hollywood as a recording engineer and videographer before starting his software company in the early days of the internet. After his company made him insane riches, the changing landscape of the early internet saw these riches vanishing, almost as soon as they came. Rick gained a powerful insight into the pursuit of money not being the path to strive for, especially at the expense of spending time on your true passions. Rick now seeks to create artistry through jiujitsu, where he trains and teaches at his Jiujitsu school in Wyoming.
TODAY’s GUEST IS Rick Ellis! Today's guest is Rick Ellis. Rick Ellis has had an eclectic career as a musician, audio engineer, visual designer, programmer, and software entrepreneur. Somewhere along the way he discovered Jiu-Jitsu and became obsessed with this fascinating and transformative art. Rick would go on to earn a blackbelt under legendary instructor...
Rick Ellis is the 7th black belt under Roy Dean. His jiu-jitsu journey started when he was 41 years old in an old Taekwondo dojo where the mats were never cleaned. Rick joined Roy Dean's academy after the doors first opened. He fell in love with Mr. Dean's coaching style, personality, and the art of jiu-jitsu. Rick always knew he was going to be a black belt. His original goal was to receive his black belt by the time he turned 50, but unfortunately, injuries and moving around cause the process to take a little longer. When talking to Rick, you can tell he is a very analytical thinker. Each time he answers a question, there is a pause as if he is trying to solve an algebraic equation with no scratch paper. It is honestly refreshing talking with a person who sits and thinks about each word before answering. You truly get a sense of authenticity and genuine desire to ensure the answer is exactly what he wants to say, no fluff. Rick is an inspiration to all those practitioners who maybe started late in life, battled a few injuries, and even thought about quitting. His interview offers good laughs, inspirational ideas and philosophies, and all-around good vibes. An Auckland councillor is calling on TVNZ to scrap the reality show Police Ten 7 over what he says are racist stereotypes. The show, which airs on Thursday nights, has run for 28 seasons. But Efeso Collins says it feeds on stereotypes - particularly of young brown men being brutish."I think if you look across the world, the fact that the US has dropped shows like Cops, which are all these chewing gum TV shows, that do nothing but you chew on something, get some flavour out of them, and then you spit them out."I think it's high time that a chewing gum show like Police Ten 7 was spat out of the New Zealand TV vernacular, because there's absolutely no need for it any more."Collins tweeted that a recent ad for the show was edited to prominently show "young brown people".He directed his criticism at TVNZ, saying: "This stuff ... feeds on racial stereotypes, and it's time you acted as responsible broadcaster and cut it."The US show Cops, easily recognisable for its opening "Bad Boy's" tune, epitomised what became a wider police ride-along television genre. It has been criticised for "media collusion" in telling one-sided stories in favour of the police perspective, and invading people's privacy in deeply personal moments of crisis.Spinoff parents editor Emily Writes says the US show was' about "police aggression, toxic masculinity disguised as service, and the removal of dignity of people facing some of the worst moments of their lives."Cops was cancelled last year, and The Spinoff commentator called for the New Zealand show to also be canned, saying it builds television around vulnerable communities, and provides a privileged platform to police. In 2007 then-TVNZ boss Rick Ellis was slammed for including Police Ten 7 in a list of the station's programmes that included Māori representation], while speaking to the Māori Affairs Select Committee. At the time, Māori party co-leader Pita Sharples said Ellis' inclusion of the show in his list was "degrading".Recently, accusations of racial profiling have been levelled at the police after RNZ revealed a series of rangatahi who had done nothing wrong were photographed by officers.Police have now launched a long-term research project into unconscious racial bias, with criminal justice advocate Kim Workman, and Waikato University.TVNZ has been approached for comment.Text from RNZ
When Phil Donahue was offered a prime-time slot on MSNBC in 2002, he was already a household name. The person who developed the format of the daytime talk show would now be the face of the network that was gearing up to be the biggest competitor to Fox News. But seven months later, his show was canceled. The official explanation given was poor ratings. But a series of insider memos and emails from the network revealed the real reason Phil Donahue was forced back into retirement: he was too critical of America's coming war with Iraq. Following the journey of The Addams Family has been surprising. Before I started, I wasn’t even sure the original creative team would want to go on record with me about the show’s tumultuous development. And yet, their gracious excitement to jump back into the world of The Addams Family showed me something that I hadn’t experienced as a member of the Broadway cast: many people like this show. First and foremost on that list was book co-author Rick Elice, who enjoyed getting his hands dirty as he wrote and rewrote the book to uncover clearer and more specific obstacles for his characters. Also on that list were Dontee Kiehn and Steve Bebout who, after closing the Broadway and national tours, went on to stage many, many well-received productions of the musical around the globe. And then there were those who are mounting the show now: the teachers and students creating little Addams Families of their own all across the country. Learn more about your ad choices. In my journey to chronicle the transformation of The Addams Family musical through its many incarnations, I was starting to understand what made the show so unique. Most first national tours are essential replicas of the Broadway production, but The Addams Family’s was not. Launching in the fall of 2011, the touring version of the show turned the focus onto the family, including a wedding in the curtain call. It changed the primary conflict from between Wednesday and her parents to between the parents themselves, as I learned from the show’s co-writer Rick Ellis.. It included a lot of new music and musical staging for both Gomez and Morticia that highlighted that conflict, as I heard from associate choreographer Dontee Kiehn. And it doubled down on the humor, adding as many jokes as could fit into the script and staging said associate director Steve Bebout. And those changes worked. All three of those original creative members - Rick, Dontee and Steve - said that the continued clarification of the script, score and staging made the national tour an unequivocal success. Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune wrote, “It’s hard to think of another show that has been revised so heavily and, for the most part, successfully, by its admirably indefatigable original authors and composer.” But I started to wonder… was all that success a fluke? Was the tour just a success in comparison to what had come before? So I delved into the show’s next professional stagings, international productions with the same design, staging and style as the show’ national tour. Lovingly referred to as “replica productions,” the first international production opened in Sao Paulo Brazil in 2012, transferring to Rio de Janeiro the following year. Also in 2013, two replica productions were mounted in Australia and Argentina. The final replica production opened in Mexico City the following year. And luckily for my research, both original associate choreographer Dontee Kiehn and original associate director Steve Bebout were involved in mounting many of them... Over the past year, dozens of writers have left their mainstream media jobs to launch their own standalone newsletters and publications. In almost every case, the writer monetized his content through paid subscriptions, usually with a tool like Substack. Rick Ellis never bothered with paid subscriptions. Instead, his website AllYourScreens.com generates so much traffic each month that he’s able to make a good living mostly through programmatic advertising. Ellis has been operating AllYourScreens.com off and on since the early 2000s, but a few years ago he decided to abandon traditional media completely to focus on the site full-time. I recently interviewed him about how he found his audience, what his weekly writing schedule looks like, and why he has no interest in building out a paid subscription business.

This episode is a wonderful conversation about bows and traditional archery. STRIKER BOWS Rick Ellis has been producing custom handcrafted longbows and recurves since 1997. What started out as a simple urge to construct his own handcrafted longbow has turned into over a decades worth of customer happy products that can be found nearly around the world. The product speaks for itself. A simple internet search for Striker Bows will result in pages of comments and reviews from customers who all have different stories but one common theme…they love their bow. Sometimes in life things just fall into place. Striker Bows was born from a desire to harvest a deer with a small and sleek traditional bow that wasn’t available on the market, so Rick Ellis went to work building his own. Those first simple designs out of a garage in Ohio have evolved into a unique line of longbows and recurves sold across the globe. A family business from the beginning, Rick’s sons, Dusty and John, have gone from helping dad whenever needed to full partners in bringing ingenuity and performance to the traditional bow market. Twenty years of hard work and constant innovation have led to the introduction of the RK1. This bow incorporates the performance and precision that Striker is known for, while adding new options and flexibility that the modern archer is accustomed to.The drive for excellence has taken Striker from a one-man operation to one of the leading traditional bow companies in the world. The Striker Bows family will continue to work with modern technology and time-honored values to bring the traditional archer the best equipment available in the cosmos.
