The history of early modern biblical scholarship has often been told as a teleological narrative in which a succession of radical thinkers dethroned the authority of the sacred word. The Limits of Erudition: The Old Testament in Post-Reformation Europe (Cambridge UP, 2024) tells a very different story.  Drawing on a mass of archival sources, Timothy Twining reconstructs the religious, cultural, and institutional contexts in which the text of the Old Testament was considered and contested throughout post-Reformation Europe. In so doing, this book brings to light a vast array of figures from across the confessional spectrum who invested immense energy in studying the Bible. Their efforts, it shows, were not disinterested, but responded to pressing contemporary concerns. The Limits of Erudition employs a novel conceptual framework to resurrect a world where learning mattered to inquisitors and archbishops as much as to antiquaries, and in which the pursuit of erudition was too important to be left to scholars. Abby and Patrick welcome Lisa Borst and Mark Krotov of literary magazine n+1. The magazine is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year and marking this milestone with the publication of The Intellectual Situation: The Best of n+1's Second Decade. Lisa, Mark, Abby, and Patrick engage in a conversation that ranges from the history of the magazine to the legacy of the Iraq War to the early dysphorias of the Trump administration to the contemporary publishing landscape and more. But at heart, it's a discussion of the psychodynamic dimensions of the relationships between writers and editors, editors and publishers, and outlets and their audiences. We talk about how good writing can help readers, writers, and editors process the world, and about how such writing emerges from a profoundly intersubjective relationship that unfolds via drafts, correspondences, revisions, and more than a little transference. You can catch Mark and Lisa in person in NYC on October 8th (free but RSVP required): https://www.nplusonemag.com/online-only/events/why-is-everything-so-ugly-a-discussion/The Intellectual Situation is available here: https://shop.nplusonemag.com/products/the-intellectual-situation-the-best-of-n-1-s-second-decade?srsltid=AfmBOoojmEq9XJN4YJ3Mt3x8wEhGneEnhqQU-cZdGdtqoLRjRa91H8BWHave you noticed that Freud is back? Our guest this week is a genuine disruptor in her industry. As the leader of a Bcorp, she strives to make real change in her community. She is a defender of civil and human rights, who works within the intersection of social and environmental justice. She's the Host of “The School for Disrupters” podcast, a faculty member at Drexel University, and CEO and Founder of Grant BLVD. Give a warm welcome to Dr. Kimberly McGlonn!Kimberly shares her motivations behind the work she does through Grant BLVD, and how she positions the company to provide support for those currently and formerly incarcerated. She'll explore the process of telling a story through your partners, and how thoughtful design of uniforms can create a cohesive experience. Takeaways:  For Kimberly, hospitality is focused on creating a sense of comfort, safety, and belonging in your guests. You need to replicate your own experiences, and allow others to have access to it. Whether it's a classroom, a restaurant, or hotel, hospitality is about creating a story that anchors people in the moment. Seating arrangements, uniforms, and decor are all integral chapters of that story that need to be cohesively organized. When creating a great business, you need to focus on your impact, and the ways you measure and communicate it. When your business strives to be a force for good, you grow both your company, and your community.  Business is all about telling the story of your values, and choosing the right partners can amplify those stories. To best serve her community, Kimberly has created a model to provide support and job opportunities to those currently and formerly incarcerated.  A good uniform is well fitting and serves a purpose, a great uniform is united in design with the whole experience. By incorporating elements of color theory and aesthetic into your uniforms, customers are no longer walking into a business, but rather, a party. When creating a dining space, cohesion is important. Your servers don't literally need to be wearing the same fabric as the tablecloths, but every aspect should be tied into each other in one fluid design.  Quote of the Show:“That moment of feeling received is what I think we're all seeking to do in the ventures that we build.” - Kimberly McGlonnLinks: Twitter: https://twitter.com/kimberlymcglonn  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimberly-mcglonn-ph-d-4798b0134/  Instagram: @kimberlymcglonn  Website: https://www.grantblvd.com/  Podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/schoolfordisrupters  Home & Hospitality Catalogue: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0059/1619/6962/files/H_H_Product_Catalog_Optimized.pdf?v=1687543185   Shout Outs: 02:38 - The EPA: https://www.epa.gov/  04:28 - Ava DuVernay's ‘13th' 14:25 - B Corporations: https://www.bcorporation.net/en-us/  16:54 - Jenkintown School Color Day 18:58 - Marriott: https://www.marriott.com/  19:00 - LaColombe Coffee: https://www.lacolombe.com/  28:05 - W Hotel Philadelphia 30:26 - The Standard: https://www.standardhotels.com/ 30:48 - Kimpton Hotels 30:55 - SoHo House: https://www.sohohouse.com/en-us/  30:56 - Fitler Club: https://fitlerclub.com/  31:01 - The Viceroy Hotel Group: https://www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/  31:27 - Graduate Hotels: https://www.graduatehotels.com/  33:52 - Steven Spielberg's ‘Lincoln' 45:32 - Netflix's ‘The Crown' Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

Transcriptions of podcasts provide visual renderings of audio that increase accessibility. But what are the best practices for transcribing a podcast, specifically a podcast about literary audio? In this episode, Katherine McLeod of ShortCuts and Kelly Cubbon, transcriber of The SpokenWeb Podcast, explore the role of transcription in the making of podcasts and how responsible transcription unfolds through collaboration and conversation. In fact, their episode uncovers just how much transcription is collaboration and conversation.Part One starts with reflections from Katherine and Kelly about how they came to the work of transcription and key concepts that have influenced their thinking throughout the process of making this episode, such as accessibility and ableism. This section also features an interview with Dr. Maya Rae Oppenheimer, a studio arts professor at Concordia University and a regular user of podcast transcripts.Part Two consists of an interview with Judith Burr, the Season 3 SpokenWeb Podcast supervising producer and project manager, about generative challenges that have come up during collaboration on podcast transcription for the podcast and how decision making has evolved over time. And Part Three is an interview with Bára Hladík, a poet, writer, and multimedia artist, about  the convergence of disability, accessibility, technology, and poetics. Beloved Bhagwan Anyone who gives up the transcendent for the mundane, in any of its myriad forms, is a mortal. A buddha is someone who finds freedom in good fortune and bad. Such is his power, karma can't hold him. No matter what kind of karma, a buddha transforms it. Heaven and hell are nothing to him. … If you're not sure, don't act. Once you act, you wander through birth and death and regret having no refuge. … To understand this mind, you have to act without acting. Only then will you see things from a tathagata's perspective. But when you first embark on the path, your awareness won't be focused. You're likely to see all sorts of strange, dreamlike scenes. But you shouldn't doubt that all such scenes come from your own mind and nowhere else. … If you see a light brighter than the sun, your remaining attachments will suddenly come to an end, and the nature of reality will be revealed. Such an occurrence serves as the basis for enlightenment. But this is something only you know. You can't explain it to others. … Or if, while you're walking, standing, sitting or lying in the stillness and darkness of night, everything appears as though in daylight, don't be startled. It's your own mind about to reveal itself. … If you see your nature, you don't need to read sutras or invoke buddhas. Erudition and knowledge are not only useless, they cloud your awareness. Doctrines are only for pointing to the mind. Once you see your mind, why pay attention to doctrines? To go from mortal to buddha, you have to put an end to karma, nurture your awareness and accept what life brings. … Once mortals see their nature, all attachments end. Awareness isn't hidden. But you can only find it right now. It's only now. If you really want to find the way, don't hold onto anything. Once you put an end to karma and nurture your awareness, any attachments that remain will come to an end. Understanding comes naturally. You don't have to make any effort. But fanatics don't understand what the buddha meant. And the harder they try, the farther they get from the sage's meaning. All day long they invoke buddhas and read sutras. But they remain blind to their own divine nature, and they don't escape the wheel. A buddha is an idle person. He doesn't run around after fortune and fame. What good are such things in the end? …
