Oh man, Sabaton's Joakim Brodén is back on the show! He joins us this week to promote the theatrical release of Sabaton's “The Tour To End All Tours” flick showing exclusively in North American theaters on October 30 and 31! Our discussion begins with the pre-planning that went into the concert film, if the plan will ever release worldwide, and the chances of a band member surprising fans at a screening. We also chat about their current North American with Judas Priest and if he feels Sabaton can keep it going into their 70's. Naturally, there's also discussion on the most iconic war film and documentary in Brodén's opinion, and a soft timeline on new music. Petar and Jozalyn discuss Mexican Coke leaving Fentanyl because they didn't mix well on tour, Forbes magazine listing the 38 top metal bands and our thoughts on the fact that no bands that are less than 20 years old made that list and why, James Hetfield not thinking that Metallica are a legacy band, and Gene Simmons hurting people's feelings by being Gene Simmons on network TV. This is the last episode we recorded before BABYMETAL reaches "XX Day", which they announced last year as being the date on which they mark 10 years of BABYMETAL. As of recording, we have no idea what (if anything?) that day will bring. But we close out the decade by talking about various points from the substantial interview that came with the The One set of Legend Metal Galaxy, as well as a few other bits of topical news as well. Join us! Our next episode, episode 44, will be the first one recorded after BABYMETAL reach their ten-year milestone. Please share with us your reflections and comments on their journey to this point (and our journeys with them) by visiting: https://babymetalpodcast.com/a-decade-of-babymetal/ Be sure follow us on twitter, https://twitter.com/babymetalpdcast, and join the discussion on discord, https://discord.gg/F6x2kcZ. Although FaceCulture had spoken to him before, this was personally my first time sitting down with Sabaton's Joakim "Jocke" Brodén. The funny thing is that I initially was supposed to talk with drummer Hannes and it was only minutes before that I realized that Joakim was going to do the interview. Sometimes in this line of work the most fun and sincere conversations are the ones that you didn't prepare for, and it always helps to talk to someone who is as easy-going as Joakim. We spoke about taking a critical look at his own music, writing about a dark period in history, self-imposed pressure, evolving without losing your identity, his thoughts on what comes next, and a lot more!
This episode of History Unplugged is unlike any we've ever done. Scott interviews Joakim Brodén, lead singer of Swedish heavy metal band Sabaton, whose new album “The Great War” is a concept record focused on World War 1. The album features songs about the introduction of tank warfare and poisonous gas, the Battle of Bellau Woods, U.S. Marine Alvin York, and Canadian hero Francis Pegahmagabow, a First Nation activist and sharp shooter. Interspersed in their discussion are numerous song clips from the album, which presents World War 1 in a way you've definitely never heard before.
