Send us a textIf you're looking for a sonic palette cleanser from the mundane, Venamoris' new album To Cross or To Burn is the aural experience you didn't know you needed. Out now via Ipecac Recordings, the album is a seductive, shadowy, and soul-baring effort from the duo of Paula and Dave Lombardo. Yes, that Dave Lombardo—drum god behind Slayer, Mr. Bungle, Misfits, Dead Cross and countless other boundary-pushing projects. But this isn't thrash, metal, or hardcore. Instead, it's something far more intimate and atmospheric—part gothic lullaby, part cinematic fever dream, and entirely its own thing.Think: a darker, stranger Portishead raised on vintage synthesizers and heartbreak. And you're only halfway there.Venamoris, a name derived from the Latin vena amoris ("vein of love"), is a reflection of the real-life partnership between Dave and Paula Lombardo. The musical bond they've cultivated runs just as deep. Paula's roots include everything from backing up Las Vegas legends like Wayne Newton to chasing a singer-songwriter dream in Nashville. With this project, she brings a magnetic presence—equal parts elegance and eerie introspection—on vocals, piano, and synths. Every lyric feels lived-in; every melody, emotionally raw.Engineered and produced by Dave Lombardo, mixed by David A. Lombardo, and mastered by the acclaimed Golden Mastering team, To Cross or To Burn shimmers with sonic depth. Every note and nuance is deliberate, yet full of danger. The Lombardos handle all instrumentation themselves, with Paula on vocals and synths and Dave handling drums, guitars, and more. The album also features contributions from a formidable group of guest musicians, including:Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk) – contrabass on “Stay With Me”Ra Diaz (Suicidal Tendencies, KORN) – bass on “Stain of Pain”Alex Skolnick (Testament) – guitar on “Stain of Pain” and “Burnt Paper”Gary Holt (Slayer, Exodus) – guitar on “Animal Magnetism”Each guest adds a unique brushstroke to the darkly emotional soundscape, enhancing but never overshadowing the central force: Paula's haunting voice and poetic songwriting. The album's opener, “Stay With Me,” is a cinematic dive into surrealist romance—starting in lo-fi crackle and ending in full digital immersion. "Holding On to Nothing" flexes Paula's lyrical teeth as she dissects betrayal with Ben Folds-style piano wrapped in Sabbath-inspired gloom.www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Allen Saunders was an American writer and cartoonist who once said “Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans”.It was later popularised by John Lennon in his song, Beautiful Boy.Saunders first said this in 1957 and I guess how I see this is that many of us still spend time planning ahead, creating goals and objectives, trying to weed out uncertainty, only for that uncertainty to keep coming back, those unexpected things to happen which can derail our plans – either for better or for worse. If I think of a few things that have really changed my life (outside of my kids), they came about by chance, I couldn't have predicted them or planned for them. They just happened.Like when I first discovered punk rock – when I was 11 or 12, my mum and dad's neighbour, with no real prompting, handed me a compilation with Judy Is A Punk on it and that was it – the Ramones changed my life….and not always for the good my dad would have saidOr how my parents starting to get ill a few years ago was a completely unexpected catalyst for me to get back into playing the cello. Never thought it would happen.Serendipity, synchronicity, karma, energy…. how these things work together to open our mind to new things, to new ways of doing things, to new people, new ideas, really interests me, and only makes me firmer in the belief that our mindset is the most important asset we have for grasping these encounters and shaping who we are.So, with their excellent second album as Venamoris imminent – it's called To Cross or To Burn - I was thrilled to welcome Paula and Dave Lombardo and they very kindly indulged me in my incoherent ramblings. This is a really beautiful chat about their own tales of taking chances, the unexpected, self-belief, instinct, and their life journeys both individually and together.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Tales from the Crypt!I had to reschedule my guest who was supposed to be on this week for Fans With Bands, which left a hole in the normal release schedule. However, this is a bit of a blessing in disguise! You see, when moving the podcast to Substack, there is an undocumented limit of 100 episodes that can be imported. Fans With Bands had 121 episodes, so 21 episodes from the first season are not here on Substack. So, to fill the void, you get to listen to the very first episode featuring Lansing's death metal band Recorruptor. I'll be working to sprinkle in the missing 21 early episodes over time so we have a full record of Fans With Bands here.Recorruptor Show NotesA chat with Clint, the vocalist for the Lansing, Michigan extreme metal band Recorruptor, and Nick, a fan of the band. In this episode, we talk about Nick's first experience with the band at Mac's (a classic dive bar in Lansing) and picking up Recorruptor's "Some S**t" demo. This launched Nick into following Recorruptor through their "Bloodmoon" and recently released "Funeral Corridor" albums. We also delved into the gateway bands of Slayer and Lamb Of God that pulled Nick and Clint into more extreme forms of metal. A big shout out to the godfather of the double kick drum, Dave Lombardo! Nick was curious as to the drinking routine for load in, and we got into Clint's 21st with Goatwhore, Black Fast, and Acid Bath. Hilarity then ensues :)Our talk gets a bit cerebral when we discuss the calming and cathartic aspects of metal music. While some may find the blistering chaos of Black Dahlia Murder beyond the pale. Extreme metal fans find the blasting power releases the tension from the day and leads to a blissful zen.Check out Recorruptor's music on BandcampFollow Recorruptor on Facebook InstagramYou can also follow Fans With Bands on Facebook and InstagramFor samplings of music by artists featured on Fans With Bands, drop by our playlist on SpotifySupport the podcast!!

Another long one. It's a full hour. Three topics this week: 1) A book report about Tom's sister's history of her family -- mostly her dad and brother. 2) An annotated list of some other Slayer-related material. And 3) a deep meditation on the pagan significance of the Slayer Leprechaun. Seriously. Two weeks ago: We looked at the beginning of Slayer's life after Jeff. Last week: Patreon listeners received 2.5 hours of content. First a report about the Relentless "Final World Tour." And then they got a long breakdown of -- and commentary on -- Kerry King's Rolling Stone interview by Kory Grow. Next week: The Slaytanic Survey... Which albums and songs are fan favorites? Tune in and find out. Then two or three more episodes, and the show is over. For now. VIRTUAL TIP JAR: The show is almost done, and we are passing the hat. In this episode we travel south of heaven where Hell awaits to spend seasons in the abyss and reign in blood with our undisputed attitude that God hates us all in the Chri$t illusion. Without divine intervention we see a world painted blood in repentless diabolus musica and tell the story of Slayer's debut album, Show No Mercy. In 1981 Huntington Park California guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman met at an audition and realised they were into the same stuff. Living only just around the corner was like-minded bass player and singer Tom Araya. All they needed to create the loudest, heaviest, fastest and most satany band ever was a double kickarse drummer. Then suddenly there was a knock at Kerry King's door. 16 year old Dave Lombardo had been told there was another long haired disreputable type in the area. So the plucky, pizza delivery man went and introduced himself. The original, the classic and the most persistent line up was complete. We will pick up the story there and tell you how that debut album came to be. I'm Jay Ingersoll, and with me is the unwavering sentinel of metal knowledge, Nick Modd. Today, we embark on a two-part odyssey through the hallowed halls of metal history, as we delve into the iconic biography of one of the most influential bands ever - Slayer. Joining us as a guest host is the formidable metal connoisseur, Jon Rohn. *An Overture to Chaos: Slayer's Genesis* In this first installment of our two-part Slayer series, we unravel the early days of the band that would go on to redefine the very essence of heavy metal. Slayer's origins are shrouded in the smog of Southern California, where four young musicians, Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman, Tom Araya, and Dave Lombardo, united to create a sound that would become synonymous with darkness, speed, and ferocity. We journey through their humble beginnings, the formation of the band, and the influences that fueled their infernal creativity. *Pioneering the Unholy Trinity: Slayer and Extreme Metal* Slayer's emergence on the scene marked a watershed moment in the history of music. We dissect how Slayer's relentless aggression and lyrical themes catapulted them to the forefront of the burgeoning extreme metal genre. From the raw brutality of their debut album "Show No Mercy" to the seismic impact of "Hell Awaits," we delve into the albums that set the stage for their reign of blood. *A Symphony of Horror: Slayer's Dark Artistry* The imagery and lyrical content of Slayer have long been a subject of fascination and controversy. We explore the band's penchant for exploring dark themes, the influence of horror movies and literature on their music, and the fervor with which they embraced the macabre. Slayer's ability to create an atmosphere of dread and chaos set them apart as true masters of the dark arts. *The Thrash Titans: Slayer's Signature Sound* Few bands have achieved the level of musical prowess and intensity that Slayer has. We dissect the components of their signature sound, from Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman's searing guitar work to the relentless rhythm section of Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo. The intricate guitar solos, blistering drum fills, and Tom Araya's signature roar all played a role in forging Slayer's sonic identity. In this episode, we have the privilege of being joined by a guest host, Jon Rohn, a metal aficionado with a deep appreciation for Slayer's impact on the genre. Jon brings his unique perspective to the discussion, adding depth and insight to the band's biography and their role in shaping the metal landscape. Join Jay Ingersoll, Nick Modd, and guest host Jon Rohn as we embark on the epic journey of Slayer's biography in this first part of a two-part series. Whether you're a die-hard Slayer fan, a lover of extreme metal, or simply a seeker of musical history, this episode promises to be an enlightening exploration of the band that pushed the boundaries of metal to its very limits. So, prepare for a sonic onslaught, sharpen your musical sensibilities, and join us in celebrating the pioneers of extreme metal.
