Music Transcending the Moment - Damara Melissa Many times, song writers will create music that reflects a major incident that has impacted their life. The music allows them to communicate their feelings, their trials, their heartache and with Christian believers, often they will communicate their faith as well. Our guest today has had her music played on several Canadian Christian Radio stations; she has made it to the Joy Radio's Top 20 Christian music list and received a Covenant Award Nomination for “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” in 2022 and another nomination for “Pop Song of the Year” in 2023. Damara Melissa is a singer-songwriter from Ontario, Canada, whose music is driven by her Faith. Her soulful voice, mixed with her pop melodies and style, bring a unique vibe to the Contemporary Christian Music space. Damara has just released her a song that is her own version of “A Thousand Hallelujahs” that is just awesome… She also released here first short album, called “Beginnings,” which document her journey through some of the painful experiences she has gone through…and she is currently working on a second EP called, “The Space Between.” To discuss both of these releases, help me welcome to the program, Damara Melissa! Damara, thank you for taking the time to join us today… I do appreciate it! The first question I always start with is this… other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Damara Melissa?” You were born in the Caribbean…How old were you when you moved to Canada? Was the music in Canada was a bit different from Caribbean music that you were used to? You experienced a personal loss that led you to begin writing Christian music, correct? Who is this music being published through? How much does your Faith influence the music you now write? Tell us why you put your spin on “Thousand Halleluiahs…” Are you looking at going on tour or joining a group? What is your goal as a Christian music artist? What is the process you use to write your music? Do you just write down your thoughts and let the Holy Spirit guide you from there? Or is there a special process you use? What is the one take away you want the listeners of your music to have? Where can someone go to download or purchase your music? Damara, this is so interesting… if someone has a question or would like to reach out to you, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? I'll put links to all of this in the show notes below. Folks, music is the pathway to the soul. You can find out a lot about a person by listening to the music they enjoy. If you don't believe me – just do an observation around you as you go shopping or out and about next time. David became KING because He used music to worship the Lord. Amen! That is what brought him to a position of favor with King Saul and eventually, to become King and – through his lineage, we get to Jesus! Amen! And it all started with music! Praise God! I want to encourage you to make a purchase of Damara Mellissa's music and allow the Holy Spirit to minister to YOU through her music. Amen! Just drop down into the show notes and click the links right there to get in touch with Damara and to get her music loaded to you listening devices. Amen! Do it right now! I wanted to revisit an episode about one of my favorite songs from 2021, “Black Dog” by Arlo Parks. A few months after this episode originally came out, Arlo Parks won the Mercury Prize for Album of the Year. She was also nominated for two Grammys: Best New Artist and Best Alternative Album. Since then, she released a new album called My Soft Machine, and she's going to be on tour this spring. Arlo Parks is a singer and songwriter from London. In January 2021, she released her debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams. It hit number three on the UK charts, and she won this year's BRIT award for Breakthrough Artist. Last year, NME called her song "Black Dog" the year's "most devastating song." In this episode, Anaïs breaks down “Black Dog," which she made with producer Gianluca Buccellati. With last year's release of ‘Monopoly', kiwi singer-songwriter Georgia Lines' success continues to grow. She's made a name for herself both in New Zealand and overseas, a string of gigs over in the States catching the attention of one of America's biggest booking agencies: Wasserman Music. Lines claimed the Breakthrough Artist award at the 2022 New Zealand Music Awards and was nominated for Best Pop Artist alongside kiwi powerhouses Lorde and Benee. 2023 was also a massive year for the singer, telling Tim Dower that you can never plan for the big moments. “You can work your butt off and do everything you can,” Lines said. “But you can never guarantee that the right people are going to be there.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Devon Cole Zoom video!Toronto-based alt-pop singer and songwriter Devon Cole is back with her new single, “Call U After Rehab,” out now on Arista Records.Following her hit singles like “W.I.T.C.H.” and “Hey Cowboy,” “Call U After Rehab” exemplifies Devon's softer side. “'Call U After Rehab' is my most vulnerable release yet,” says Devon. “It's a love song about pausing a relationship in order to take care of myself. I was putting off my issues for a while and finding any way to justify my bad habits. Deciding to say goodbye to my closest comforts, to give myself the space and time to heal, felt like ripping off a bandaid that had been there for ages. And this release kind of feels the same, in some ways. I hope people can relate by interpreting the rehab idea however they want to."Catchily packaging social truths in repeat worthy pop bops, 24-year-old Devon Cole has quietly emerged as an enigmatic and engaging force to be reckoned with over the past year. Her buzzing smash “W.I.T.C.H.” (Woman in Total Control of Herself) has eclipsed 70 million streams and counting. Following this success, she maintained her momentum with the endlessly catchy sex-positive anthem “Hey Cowboy.” Since signing to Arista Records in 2022, Devon has reached the precipice of a major breakthrough. She's already amassed millions of streams across her repertoire, received critical acclaim from tastemakers Billboard, BUSTLE and EARMILK, and recently nabbed a 2023 Juno Award nomination for ‘Breakthrough Artist of the Year' and a 2023 Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Award nomination for Favorite Breakout Artist. So many Worship Leaders are so concerned about being accused of “performing” and not actually leading worship. Questions like “are we doing it well?” and “how did we sound?'' come before the important question of “did we see lives changed?'' and “did people meet Jesus?” There's a tension that exists between the space of worship and the space of performance. Accusations of “that church just puts on a show” are prevalent within the western Church and our megachurches have spent lots of tithe money on creating a highly produced Sunday service. One might even say that the light show on Sunday helps keep the lights on the rest of the week. Elias Dummer knows a thing or two about this topic of worship versus performance. As a former successful CCM artist and lead singer of the band The City Harmonic and as a songwriter and Worship Leader for his local church, he has a unique perspective based on his years of experience. In this episode he addresses this issue by bringing us back to the basics of how we were created. Hopefully, through this episode, our tribe will be able to remove the fear of creating a performance culture and just focus on doing worship well and connecting the congregation with God. This podcast is brought to you by Authentic Media and Worship Leader Magazine. Our host is Joshua Swanson and the show's co-producer and editor is Matt McCartie. "The Alt-Country Show is completely dedicated to Aussie artists today! That's because the scene there is insane! You'll be blown away at the talent on this show. Today's episode isn't even a complete picture as there are many artists I wasn't able to get permission from in time for the episode to go live. But, I hope to feature them in the very near future! Learn a little about some of the artists in today's mix below. As always, click those links and show your support by purchasing their music and merch. It's more important than ever to support your favorite musicians! Caitlin Harnett & the Pony Boys - This group out of Sydney was one of my recent finds and part of the reason I fell down a rabbit hole of Australian tunes. I fell in love with Caitlin Harnett and co. the first time I heard them. Based on the two singles they've released this year, I cannot wait for their album which is due out in November. Caitlin was kind enough to give me some suggestions on artists for this mix as well! Alex the Astronaut - You may have heard Alex the Astronaut on The BTR Top 10 recently! The BTR staff has been spinning her album 'The Theory of Absolutely Nothing' quite a bit! And, now she's an ARIA nominee! Alex is nominated for Breakthrough Artist of 2020. Past winners include Silverchair, Jet, Wolfmother, Ladyhawke, Tones and I, and more. James Thomson - Newcastle based artist, James Thomson really drew me in with the lyrics on his album 'Golden Exile' which dropped in March of this year. I got some Jeff Tweedy vibes and I could totally envision myself at one of his shows having a singalong with the rest of his fans. Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes - The Melbourne based group released an awesome 7in single in May and their fifth studio album is due out later this year. We'll definitely keep up with this group and bring you some of that new music here on the show! Ruben Neeson - Ruben Neeson has dropped a couple of singles in 2020 and we are loving both of them! Pick them up on his Bandcamp page and we'll keep an eye out for more new tunes as well. All Our Exes Live in Texas - OG BTR Alt-Country! So, We had to include them. All Our Exes did a special live set with BTR back in 2017. I've been spinning KIT (Katie Wighton) from All Our Exes on Ladies Skate Only and have loved all of the singles she's dropped this year. Madeline Leman & The Desert Swells - This group out of Melbourne got me hooked with their 2018 album 'Diva With The Fever of Change.' And, I've gotten lost in their latest release ‘Nobody’s Fool’ multiple times since coming across it on Bandcamp recently. Gerogia State Line - Fronted by Georgia Delves, this group had plans to release their debut album this year but... covid. Luckily we have the dreamy single that's on today's mix. And, we'll keep you in the loop when the album drops. Dave Favours & the Roadside Ashes - The group's album ‘Not Your Average Country Band’ dropped in April of this year. Dave Favours not only makes incredible tunes with The Roadside Ashes but he helped supply quite a few artists in today's mix as well, through his label Stanley Records! He also released the "Take Me To Town" compilation that I reference in the show and where you can find Katie Brianna's tack "Sticks & Stones." Katie Brianna - Her voice is strong but soothing and I fell in love on the first note. Our eyes and ears are open and ready for anything she releases. Ben Leece - Is a Newcastle based, Americana singer-songwriter and he's got us hooked. He just released a new single called "Magpie" which you'll have to check out and you'll hear another recent single of his "Paper Thin" in today's mix. JB Patterson - His new album 'Young Man For A While' dropped earlier this year. He's an Americana singer songwriter that works out of a solar studio!?! Which we want to hear more about for sure. Catch more music from JB on the Brisbane edition of Spotlight On The City. Jordan Merrick - Jordan is also featured on the Brisbane episode of Spotlight On The City and will probably find a home here on the Alt-Country Show as well. We are loving his sound and will be scouting for any new material. Julia Jacklin - Last year's most played artist of the year at BTR! You can pre-order a special, limited edition vinyl from her album 'Crushing' on the Polyvinyl site right now! 00:00 - Emily (Steven's Snowman by M. Ward) 02:35 - Make You Feel Blue - Caitlin Harnett and the Pony Boys 05:53 - Tommy's Trip - James Thomson 09:01 - Happy Song - Alex The Astronaut 13:03 - Emily 14:30 - The Road - Lachlan Bryan & the Wildes 17:08 - I Just Don't Know the Truth - Ruben Neeson 19:42 - The Devil's Part - All Our Exes Live In Texas 23:16 - From Down Here - Georgia State Line 27:26 - Better Days - Dave Favours & the Roadside Ashes 30:39 - Nobody's Fool - Madeline Leman & the Dessert Swells 34:55 - Emily 36:39 - Young Man For A While - JB Paterson 40:26 - Paper Thin - Ben Leece 43:46 - Sticks and Stones - Katie Brianna 45:43 - Millennial Blues - Jordan Merrick 49:02 - Don't Know How To Keep Loving You - Julia Jacklin 54:00 - Emily 55:55 - 5am - Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys 58:40 - Finish "
Every time we ask someone in the music business what is the most exciting thing happening in music in the City of Boston, we always get the same answer. Hip-Hop. Not only has Hip Hop become the most popular music genre in the rest of the world, but Boston has become a hotbed of fantastic hip-hop artists like our next guest, Brandie Blaze.Brandie is nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Boston Music Awards and is blazing (sorry) her own path with her powerful and energetic performances. Her on stage persona is fierce, with socially conscious but also unapologetically explicit lyrics. She gives credit for her success to her mother, who she says raised her to be aware of the world she lives in, as well as other Boston Hip-Hop artists like Dutch Rebelle, Moe Pope, Oompa, and her collaborator in music Red Shaydez. But she doesn’t seem like someone who needs a leg up. Brandie describes herself as a Trap Feminist, which she’ll explain in the conversation. She is devoted to her off stage work with The Dorchester Arts Project as well as being a program manager at Mission Safe. Her last album Late Bloomer got everyone’s attention. We can’t wait until she grabs our attention again with her next album coming out next spring.

I had the most wonderful conversation with Drag Queen Chelsea Piers. Chelsea Piers was created by my fellow New Yorker and friend Justin Nako. As the Winner of the “Breakthrough Artist” at the 2013 Glam Awards, for over five years Chelsea has headlined shows at the Crown & Anchor and Stonewall Inn. She has made several appearances on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live and starred in last falls TV show Shade: Queens of NYC on Fusion TV. Chelsea and I were able to talk about her work, the multitasking that goes into a routine or show, the joys and struggles of Drag, as well as her upcoming shows.
Drew and Danielle McTaggart are Dear Rouge. They are incredibly talented in their own rights but the two added together is literaly flipping magic - like, call Hogwarts already, this shit is incredible. Danielle's stage presence is nothing short of miraculous in its energy and talent, but when you see these kids lock eyes during a few songs and the silly grins they have with each other - says it all. Drew tells me about marrying Danielle, and then losing his senses. Both stories are pretty much perfection. He was such an interesting character offstage and not at all what I expected. He was quietly funny and super open about his life, which as a story collector of the highest order (are you reading this CBC? yay!) made me super happy. In this episode you will hear their award winning "I heard I had" song and my favourite by them "Black to Gold". They won the 2016 Juno for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and deserve every accolade that comes with it. www.dearrouge.com Find them on Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, ITunes and my earholes almost er'day. xo Paula

It's the second day of our Best of 2015 deliberations and the gang is here to figure out their nominees for Breakthrough Writer, Breakthrough Artist, Single Issue and Graphic Novel of the Year.
In this episode, we catch up with one of the hardest working artists in the industry, The Band Perry. They recently stopped by the MusicRow office to discuss new music and to reflect on their success over the last five years. Our conversation covered a lot of ground– from how they learned to develop a thick skin, their endless desire to grow and develop their art, and where they get such a strong work ethic. As a family band made up of 2 brothers and a sister, we also asked Kimberly, Neil and Reid how they go about making decisions when it comes to important things in their career. On Big Machine’s Republic Nashville label, The Band Perry was named MusicRow’s Breakthrough Artist in 2011 and they have gone on to win many awards, including trophies from the CMA, ACM, CMT and a Grammy earlier this year for their recording of Glen Campbell’s “Gentle on my Mind.”
