Filmmaking isn't just about making a great film—it's about getting that film seen. With traditional distribution models crumbling, independent filmmakers are finding new ways to connect directly with audiences. This episode explores how the indie film landscape is shifting, with filmmakers taking control of their own distribution, marketing, and audience-building strategies. Whether you're a first-time filmmaker or a seasoned pro, this episode will inspire you to think outside the box and embrace a more grassroots approach to getting your work into the world. Jon Reiss is a filmmaker, author of the book Think Outside the Box Office, and a media strategist who runs 8 Above, a company that creates custom distribution strategies for indie films. He has consulted with filmmakers and organizations worldwide including The Gotham, IDA, and Film Independent, and has led workshops on distribution and marketing through his 8 Above Distribution Lab. Reiss is currently producing a documentary on robotic performance artist Mark Pauline, and is producing the second season of a podcast, Plantscendence, about people's psychedelic experiences. He has recently launched a Substack focused on indie film distribution and marketing. Annamaria Sofillas, a development executive and producer, is the Director of Content at Kino Lorber's MHz SVOD. She is the lead producer of the documentary "I'm “George Lucas": A Connor Ratliff Story, which premiered at Slamdance '24 and received theatrical exhibition nationwide through Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, with digital distribution by Grasshopper Film. Annamaria was instrumental in building NBCUniversal's Seeso and Gimlet Media's scripted division, where she led over 25 long-form television series and 30 stand-up specials, including the GLAAD Award-nominated Take My Wife and BAFTA Award-nominated Flowers. Scott Monahan, the filmmaker behind Anchorage, has been candid about his experience with self-distribution, highlighting the challenges and successes of taking control of a film's release. Glen Reynolds, founder of Circus Road Films, is a producer rep and festival advocate who helps indie filmmakers navigate distribution and find the right partners to bring their projects to audiences. In this roundtable discussion, No Film School's GG Hawkins speaks with Jon Reiss, Annamaria Sofillas, Scott Monahan, and Glen Reynolds to discuss: Why hybrid distribution is essential for indie filmmakers today How film festivals and events can help grow your audience Why setting clear release goals is crucial for your film's success How building your audience starts long before your film's release Real-world examples of filmmakers using grassroots promotion and festival tours Why filmmakers are taking control of their own marketing and outreach strategies How indie filmmakers are embracing a punk rock mentality to bypass traditional distribution models Links: Learn more about Scott Monahan Learn more about Glen Reynolds Follow Annamaria Sofillas on Instagram Buy or rent I'm “George Lucas”: A Connor Ratliff Story on Amazon/Apple I'm "George Lucas": A Connor Ratliff Story Website Follow I'm “George Lucas” on Instagram Follow I'm “George Lucas” on Facebook Follow I'm “George Lucas” on X 8 Above with Jon Reiss Substack 8 Above website Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! In this episode, Joe interviews Jon Reiss: critically acclaimed filmmaker, author, and host of the Plantscendence podcast, which tells people's psychedelic stories and is beginning its second season soon. He talks about his early days of directing Nine Inch Nails and Type O Negative videos, and how Plantscendence was born after he realized that the conversations he was having with people about their most transformative experiences were perfect for a podcast. He discusses his first psychedelic experience with ayahuasca, how microdosing is helping him today, and his realization that people can get to these big experiences in many different ways. He discusses: The two episodes of Plantscendence that stand out the most to him Using the term, ‘plant medicine' His 30 years of meditation practice and how it likely helped him to integrate his first psychedelic experiences The concept of plant intelligence and how plants can stop you from being a “consciousness tourist” Kabbalah, Kashmir Shaivism, non-duality, and his Shaktipata experience and more! Between the Frames is a set of sub-episodes wherein Chris probes far deeper into specific facets of each filmmaking stage covered thus far. He explores some important practices, disciplines, philosophies and skills that may have been previously glossed over, under discussed, or all together undiscussed. In this inaugural Between The Frames, Chris discusses some specific pre-production topics including: Balancing Time and Money Organization Communication Negotiation Time Management Honesty He covers their importance and some best practices to get the most out of each. He also recommends a long list of tools and resources in the form of books, apps, and podcasts that serve the pre-production process, from organization to time management and communication. Here they are: Independent Ed, by Edward Burns - In this hugely inspiring chronicle, Burns recounts his rise to prominence as an independent filmmaker and actor, the career lull, and his resurgence when he discovered micro-budget filmmaking. It’s detailed and highly inspiring. Think Outside The Box Office, by Jon Reiss - Though aspects of this book are a bit dated (see below blog), Box Office is a 21st century distribution manual for the independent filmmaker, at it’ll help you budget appropriately for the best possible outcome. Jon Reiss’ blog - This is also a great resource containing a great deal of updated distribution information and resources to help you better plan ahead in prep. Creativity Inc., by Ed Catmull and Amy Wallace - Pixar’s co-founder and CEO outlines the history of the great cinematic institution, and the many internal processes lending to their amazing track record. ShoHawk’s Creativity Inc. post - In this post, Mike synopsizes the important lessons he gleaned from the book. ShoHawk’s Pixar Braintrust post - In this post, Mike dives deep into the actual structure of Pixar’s braintrust and how to build and organize your own. The 4 Hour Work Week, by Tim Ferriss - This watershed book in productivity and professional efficiency has probably done more to shape the modern workforce than any other book, and it remains an exceptional tool for time management sharpening. Never Split The Difference, by Chris Voss - Former CIA hostage negotiator Voss deconstructs the art and science of successful negotiation, with the subtitle: “How to negotiate as though your life depended on it.” SCRUM Workflow - This is a task management philosophy commonly used in software and coding. It is meant to streamline allocation of time and break down large tasks into smaller, executable chunks. Trello - An excellent digital tool for breaking down tasks, organizing them, and visually managing the SCRUM workflow. Evernote - Chris’ “idea” organization tool of choice—the digital equivalent of carrying a backpack full of unlimited notebooks with unlimited pages. ShoHawk’s Evernote post - Chris outlines his specific process for organization using Evernote, including specific notebooks he’s created. Film Trooper - Scott McMahon’s extensive blog and podcast covering a host of filmmaking topics, including funding, prep, SAG (this is where our SAG segment with Michele Gibson originated), and more. Scott is also a fellow Portlander—Rip City baby! No Film School Podcast - Specifically, the First Feature AMATEUR podcast. It’s housed within the NFS podcast channel, so you kind of have to hunt around for it. But it’s a worthwhile look at the process of making a film, particularly from scripting to production. Filmmaker Freedom podcast - Rob Hardy has done a fantastic job of structuring an entire season around making a living as a filmmaker, including by reverse-engineering feature films around an audience, from the beginning. Show Don’t Tell podcast - Noam Kroll’s podcast gives you most everything you need to know about making a micro-budget feature, including thinking tactically about preparation.
