Overview  With Marginal Funding Week, we want to share key updates on the EA Animal Welfare Fund (AWF). We'll cover what we've accomplished so far in 2024, our impact this year, recent changes, and where we're headed next - including current constraints to our impact. We think this info will be helpful for anyone considering year-end donations. Since its founding in 2017, AWF has distributed $23.3M across 347 grants. This year, we've distributed $3.7M across 51 grants. We made grants across multiple intervention categories and aimed to impact a variety of species. Our most frequently funded strategic area was welfare campaigns, policy advocacy and research. The most frequently targeted species were egg-laying hens followed by multiple farmed animals, wild animals, and shrimps. While the impact of many of our 2024 grants is still unclear, our previous grants have made significant progress, reflecting our ability to identify opportunities with [...] ---Outline:(00:08) Overview(02:12) 1. Africa's wilderness has captured the imagination of millions of people around the world. Despite its exploding population and rapidly growing economies, the continent has often been the flagbearer of conservation globally. This ranges from the conservation of elephants and rhinos in southern Africa to the creation of Kavango Zambezi, the second-largest nature conservation landscape globally. However, Africa's wildlife is far from secure. The illegal wildlife trade still looms large with threatening lions, rhinos, and pangolins across the continent. Meanwhile, livestock overgrazing and the demand for charcoal and firewood are fostering the degradation of the habitats of giraffes, zebra, and other ungulates. Deadly diseases threaten the survival of gorillas and chimpanzees.  In this episode of The Think Wildlife Podcast, I interview Kaddu Sebunya, the CEO of the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF). We discuss extensively about the impact of the illegal wildlife trade on Africa's biodiversity, tackling habitat loss through alternative livelihoods and sustainable agriculture and the potential and issues of utilizing  trophy hunting in African conservation. Kaddu also extensively elaborates upon some of the projects AWF is involved in to tackle the climate crisis, counter the illegal wildlife trade, and prevent habitat loss.  This is a public episode. Welcome to Supreme Court Opinions. In this episode, you'll hear the Court's opinion in Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts, Inc. v Goldsmith. In this case, the court considered this issue: What is the proper test for whether a work is “transformative” under the first factor of the Copyright Act's fair use doctrine? The case was decided on May 18, 2023. The Supreme Court held that he “purpose and character” of the Andy Warhol Foundation (AWF)'s particular commercial use of Lynn Goldsmith's photograph of the musician Prince does not favor AWF's fair use defense to copyright infringement. Justice Sonia Sotomayor authored the 7-2 majority opinion of the Court. The fair use defense to copyright infringement promotes creativity by recognizing that some secondary works make unauthorized use of original works but serve a different purpose, add new expression, or convey new ideas. Andy Warhol's “Orange Prince,” one of the Prince Series that was derived from the photograph by Lynn Goldsmith, appeared on the cover of a Vanity Fair magazine commemorating the late musician for a fee of $10,000—all of which to AWF and of which Goldsmith received none. In contrast, Goldsmith's photographs were licensed and used on several other magazine covers commemorating Prince. AWF's use of Orange Prince on the cover of Vanity Fair served essentially the same commercial purpose as Goldsmith's original. Thus, the first fair-use factor—the purpose and character of use, including whether the use is for commercial or nonprofit purpose—weighs against the conclusion that AWF's use of Goldsmith's photograph for the specific purpose of a magazine cover commemorating Prince was fair. Justice Neil Gorsuch authored a concurring opinion, in which Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson joined, emphasizing the narrowness of the majority's opinion and its appropriate focus on the specific use challenged. Justice Elena Kagan authored a dissenting opinion, in which Chief Justice John Roberts joined, criticizing the majority of stifling creativity and disregarding the reality that creativity relies upon the borrowing of works that came before. Note: The Court's opinion here included pictures and paintings. Those images are not captured in this recording. I encourage you to find the opinion online and review the images referenced here. The opinion is presented here in its entirety, but with citations omitted. If you appreciate this episode, please subscribe. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Animal Welfare Fund: Payout recommendations from May 2022 to March 2024, published by Linch on June 26, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction This payout report covers the Animal Welfare Fund's grantmaking from May 1 2022 to March 31st 2024 (23 months). It follows the previous March-April 2022 payout report. Since the previous report was written, the Animal Welfare Fund made a conscious decision to deprioritize public reports so that fund managers can have more time and capacity to work on high-quality evaluations. However, now that I (Linch) am working for EA Funds full-time, I've attempted to consolidate and streamline the report writing process, so that hopefully regular reports can be written again without unduly using up limited fund manager time. Total funding recommended: $7,079,301 Total funding paid out: $6,943,301 Number of grants paid out: 109 Acceptance rate (excluding desk rejections): 111/409 = 27.1% Acceptance rate (including desk rejections): 111/685 = 16.2% Report authors: Linchuan Zhang (primary author), Kieran Greig (fund chair), Karolina Sarek, Zoë Sigle, Neil Dullaghan 16 of our grantees, who received a total of $1,068,540, requested that we do not include public reports for their grants (you can read our policy on public reporting here). Highlighted Grants (The following grants writeups were written by me, Linch Zhang. They were reviewed by the primary investigators of each grant). Highlighted grants correspond to grants that the AWF team rated highly, usually because they thought the grant was very likely to be very cost-effective or the potential upside was very high. Planet For All Hong Kong ($63,000): Stipends and professional services to launch Hong Kong's first aquatic animal welfare movement The Animal Welfare Fund provided a $63,000 grant to Planet For All Hong Kong from September 2022 to August 2023. The funding covered stipends, marketing, website, and professional services for one full-time employee and two part-time employees to launch Hong Kong's first aquatic animal welfare movement. The organization plans to engage with industry stakeholders, government, and policymakers; raise public awareness; and build partnerships with corporations to incorporate animal welfare in their sourcing policies. The Animal Welfare Fund was excited to fund this project due to the region, focus area, and the organizations' leadership and project plan. Hong Kong is a high-priority region with high fish consumption, and the work is very neglected. The fund believes the small organization has good leadership and a reasonable project plan. However, we did have concerns that the additional focus may distract from their very important work on chicken cage-free reforms. This concern is partially mitigated by the grant being used to hire an external person for the full-time role, so existing projects are hopefully less likely to be negatively impacted. Overall, the importance and neglectedness of the work are strong arguments in favor of supporting the grant. Outcomes: During the grant period, the organization identified supportive stakeholders and a local campaign opportunity regarding "Fish Culture Zones," building rapport with local marine conservation organizations and meeting with modern fish farmers to better understand the feasibility and challenges of promoting aquatic animal welfare. They connected the Fish Culture Zone campaign with the importance of aquatic animal agriculture and met with the Aquaculture Division of the Hong Kong government. The organization successfully launched "Sea Life Matters," the first public education campaign about aquatic life welfare in Hong Kong, engaging with about 1,000 citizens, partnering with more than 30 online influencers, and collaborating with over 10 restaurants and retailers. Some advocates commend the commission in Arizona for their ongoing commitment to adhering to the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation and respecting wildlife as a public trust resource. In this episode, Jesse Deubel talks with Michael Cravens of the Arizona Wildlife Federation to discuss the nuances surrounding this recent rule change. Cześć i czołem, tu nadaje podcast Głowa Rządzi. Mamy odcinek numer 117! Dwie rzeczy.  I. Trzeba podzielić się postem promującym konferencję w mediach społecznościowych oznaczając Głowa Rządzi i AWF Warszawa.  II. Enjoy!

This is: Winners in the Forum's Donation Election (2023), published by Lizka on December 24, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR: We ran a Donation Election in which 341 Forum users[1] voted on how we should allocate the Donation Election Fund ($34,856[2]). The winners are: Rethink Priorities - $12,847.75 Charity Entrepreneurship: Incubated Charities Fund - $11,351.11 Animal Welfare Fund (EA Funds) - $10,657.07 This post shares more information about the results: Comments from voters about their votes: patterns include referencing organizations' marginal funding posts, updating towards the neglectedness of animal welfare, appreciating strong track records, etc. Voting patterns: most people voted for 2-4 candidates (at least one of which was one of the three winners), usually in multiple cause areas Cause area stats: similar numbers of points went to cross-cause, animal welfare, risk/future-oriented, and global health candidates (ranked in that order) All candidate results, including raw point[3] totals: the Long-Term Future Fund initially placed second by raw point totals Concluding thoughts & other charities You can find some extra information in this spreadsheet. Highlights from the comments: why people voted the way they did We asked voters if they wanted to share a note about why they voted the way they did. 74 people (~20%) wrote a comment. I'm sharing a few excerpts[4] below, and more in a comment on this post (separated for the sake of space) - consider reading the longer version if you have a moment. There were some recurring patterns in different people's notes, some of which appear in these two comments explaining their authors' votes: "[AWF], because I was convinced by the post about how animal welfare dominates in non-longtermist causes, [CE], so that there can be even more excellent ways of making the world a better place by donating, [GWWC], because I wish we had unlimited money to give to all the others" "Realized I'm too partial to [global health] and biased against animal welfare, [so I decided to vote for the] most effective animal organization. Rethink's post was very convincing. CE has the most innovative ideas in GHD and it isn't close. GiveWell is GiveWell." Rethink Priorities's funding request post was mentioned a lot. People also noted specific aspects of RP's work that they appreciate, like the EA Survey, public benefits/publishing research on cause prioritization, moral weights work, and research into particularly neglected animals. There were also shoutouts to the staff: "ALLFED and Rethink Priorities both consist of highly talented and motivated individuals that are working on high-potential, high-impact projects. Both organizations have left a strong impression on me in terms of their approach to reasoning and problem solving. [...] Both organizations have recently posted extremely well-detailed [updates on their financial situation and how additional funding would help]. [...]" CE's Incubated Charities Fund (and Charity Entrepreneurship more broadly) got a lot of appreciation for their good and/or unusual ideas and track record. There were also comments like: "...direct-action global health charities need more funding now, especially in light of reductions in future funding from Open Phil. [And] there's enough potential upside to charity incubation to put a good bit of money there." A number of people wrote that they'd updated towards donating to animal welfare as a result of recent discussions ( often explicitly because of this post). Many gave a lot of their points to the Animal Welfare Fund, sometimes referencing GWWC's evaluations of the evaluators. Some also said they wanted to vote for animal welfare to correct for what they saw as its relative neglectedness in EA or to emphasize that it has a central place in EA. One example: "I vo...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The EA Animal Welfare Fund (Once Again) Has Significant Room For More Funding, published by kierangreig on November 20, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Just as ~2 years ago, the EA Animal Welfare Fund has significant room for more funding. This could be a pretty important point that informs end of year giving for a number of donors who are looking to make donations within the animal sector. Briefly, here's why the Animal Welfare Fund has some pretty significant room for more funding at this point: Right now, there's currently ~$1M in the Animal Welfare Fund. We also now have 50 grants, summing to ~$4.5M in grants under evaluation. Between mid-last year and mid-this year, the EA AWF received ~350 applications over the past year of which ~150 were desk rejects and ~200 were graded by fund managers. Of these ~200, ~60 received funding, and ~30 received the grant amount they applied for or more. Assuming that the general shape of the pipeline remains similar, that could imply we may now have more grants than we can fund. Potentially even if we were to have an influx of several hundred thousand dollars. In general, the AWF is navigating a difficult period funding-wise: last year, we had ~$7M to allocate, whereas our projection for this year - extrapolating from donations received so far - is only ~$5M. We also have some plans for significant growth next year through some internal expansion plans in the works (e.g., possibly adding further fund managers, hopefully at least one who is full-time, and doing more active grantmaking). Also, a lot of our grantees have grown, so they'll have more room for funding. As a lot of the groups we give to are relatively small, they can grow at such a rate that they'd often be looking to absorb twice as much funding in the next year. If we zoom in on just say Fórum Nacional de Proteção e Defesa Animal-a promising Brazilian group. In 2021 we granted $30k to them and this year $80k. Which comfortably corresponds to a greater than 100% growth in grant amount over a two-year period. Generally, it seems that if we have more money in the fund, it encourages some good organizations to request more funding for some quality projects. Relatedly, some of the areas we grant in just tend to be pretty high growth and grow at comfortably >20% year on year. For instance, years ago there was basically very little that could be granted to invertebrate welfare, but this year we made several hundred thousand dollars in grants within that area. So next year, we think that we could fairly comfortably and productively absorb and grant out in the realm of $6M-$10M (that's a ~20%-100% increase on this year) without any significant decreases to the quality of our grants. Note too, that in previous years we have been able to do such jumps in grantmaking volume. In 2020 we granted out ~$2M in total, in 2021 more than doubled that to ~$4.5M, and in 2022 went up to $7M, before now likely decreasing to ~$5M this year. We think we're again on track to handle 2020-2022 levels of either absolute growth or percentage growth in grants for next year, which will put us in that $6M-$10M range. So one way to look at this is that we now have ~$1M in the fund but next year we could do something like at least ~$7.5M in grants. So in that sense, we have several million dollars in room for more funding. It could be worth thinking about how much we'll likely raise for grants for next year too though. This year, we typically raised ~$100k per month. Historically, we have seen about a ~2x-8x increase on that monthly total for the month of December and January (some end-of-year donations come in on the books in January). Another way to look at this then, is based on the current trends and growth in them year to year, we would now be looking at raising something like ~$1.7M (~$100k...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The EA Animal Welfare Fund is looking for guest fund managers, published by Neil Dullaghan on November 5, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. You can apply by filling out this form by the 26th of November. EA Animal Welfare Fund (AWF) is currently looking to hire additional guest fund managers. AWF is one of the largest funding sources for small- and medium-sized animal welfare projects. In the last twelve months, the Animal Welfare Fund made more than $6.5 million worth of grants to high-impact organizations and talented individuals. To allocate this funding effectively, we are looking for guest fund managers with careful judgment in the relevant subject areas and an interest in effective grantmaking. As a guest fund manager, you will evaluate grant applications, proactively help new projects get off the ground ('active grantmaking'), publish grant reports, and contribute to the fund's strategy. Terms of employment: We are offering paid part-time, and volunteer positions. Compensation for part-time contractors is $60 per hour. You will be hired for a period of 3-6 months after which you may have an opportunity to join the team as a permanent fund manager. If you are interested in the guest fund manager role - please apply here . If you know of anyone who might be a good fit for this role, please forward this document to them and encourage them to apply. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to Karolina via karolina@effectivealtruismfunds.org Applications are open now until the 26th of November. We look forward to hearing from you! About the role In this role, you will have a tangible impact by helping to direct millions of dollars to high-impact funding opportunities each year, all the while building your grantmaking skills and expanding your knowledge about animal welfare. By communicating your reasoning to the community, you will indirectly contribute to the culture and epistemics of the EA and effective animal advocacy (EAA) community. By providing feedback, you will help existing projects improve. In the longer term, your work will help the EA community develop the capacity to allocate a potentially much greater volume of funding each year. While doing so, you will interact with other intellectually curious, experienced, and welcoming fund managers, all of whom share a profound drive to make the biggest difference they can. As a guest fund manager, your primary goal will be to increase the fund's capacity to source and investigate more grant applications. Your responsibilities will include: Investigating grants assigned to you, and assessing other fund managers' grant recommendations Voting on grant recommendations (each fund manager has a vote) Sourcing high-quality applications based on your ideas through your network ('active grantmaking') Communicating your thinking to the community in writing, e.g., feedback to grantees, grant reports, EA Forum posts and comments Providing input on the overall strategic direction of the fund About you We are interested in experienced grantmakers, researchers and people with experience in direct work as well as junior applicants who are looking to build experience in grantmaking. You might be a good fit for guest fund manager if: You are familiar with work on farmed animal welfare, wild animal welfare and animal advocacy, and have detailed, independent opinions on what constitutes good work in those areas and how you would like these areas and communities to develop over the coming years. You have strong analytic skills and experience assessing others' work. You have a strong network in these areas. You can communicate your reasoning articulately, transparently , and cordially, and you can convey complex ideas to a lay audience in simple language. You are organized and reliable. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit nealkatyal.substack.comAndy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Inc. v. Goldsmith et al. is a landmark 2023 Supreme Court decision concerning copyright law and the “fair use” exception. We have two amazing guests in conversation to discuss it. Adam Weinberg is the Director of the Whitney Museum, and the smartest person about art that I know. Deborah Kass is a brilliant artist, and some of her most famous work plays on Warhol. They are the ideal guests to discuss how this decision will transform the art world — and guide us through a vicious debate between Justice Sotomayor (for the majority) and Justice Kagan (for the dissent, joined by Chief Justice Roberts). To understand what's going on, first know that the Copyright Act gives artists a number of rights intended to preserve and promote creative expression. Included among these are the right to reproduce copyrighted work, the right to create derivative works, and the right to display copyrighted work in a public setting. However, artists do not have absolute control over their work. In 1976, Congress passed a law stating that the use of a copyrighted work “for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching…scholarship, or research” is not an infringement of copyright. This is known as the “fair use” exception to the Copyright Act.To determine if a piece qualities as “fair use,” the statute offers four factors for consideration: “The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; the nature of the copyrighted work; the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and; the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.” If a new piece of art alters an original work to such an extreme that, under factor one, the “purpose and character” of the new piece is altogether different from the original, it is said to be “transformative.”Enter Andy Warhol. In 1984, Vanity Fair commissioned Warhol to create a portrait of Prince for their magazine cover. The portrait was to be based on a photo taken by photographer Lynn Goldsmith; Vanity Fair had paid Goldsmith $400 for the photo and agreed to use it only for the cover of the magazine. However, Warhol went on to create 15 separate portraits of Prince, each of which used the photo as inspiration. In 2016, the Andy Warhol Foundation (AWF) sold Condé Nast the rights to one of these portraits. Goldsmith received no compensation, and when she heard about the transaction, she demanded payment. AWF responded by launching a lawsuit. You can see Goldsmith's original photo on the right, and what Warhol did on the left.AWF argued that Warhol's rendition of Prince (titled Orange Prince) was so transformative that, under the first factor for fair use, the portrait acquired an entirely new “purpose and character” and was therefore legal. Lawyers for Goldsmith disagreed. Thus, the decision centered around one, key question: Did the sale of Warhol's portrait of Prince make fair use of Goldsmith's photograph, particularly with respect to factor one of the Copyright Act's “fair use” exception?Writing for a 7-2 majority, Justice Sotomayor held that the Warhol Foundation committed copyright infringement when, in 2016, it sold the rights to a Warhol work (based on a photograph by Lynn Goldsmith) without compensating Goldsmith. In a blistering dissent, Justice Kagan argued that the Majority Opinion would have chilling effects on the creative process, limiting artists, musicians, writers, and others in their ability to create new and inspired works.I'm thrilled that listeners will get to hear Deborah Kass, one of the greatest living artists, and someone whose work appropriates Warhol (who in turn is appropriating others). This is the Red Deb of her's that we discuss in the episode:While it is too early to know exactly how the Supreme Court's Warhol decision will play out, many experts see the case as a shift in the world of copyright law, opening the floodgates to more lawsuits and potentially hindering artistic creation across the country. It will be a fascinating next few years for copyright. One last thing: I'm well aware that it's hard to just listen to this episode without seeing the pictures. Next week's copyright episode will be about music, not pictures, with the great guitarist and most sought after music writer today, Aaron Dessner. Together, they will give you a comprehensive look at how copyright law is impacting our lives, every day.
