Joost Swarte is striptekenaar en grafisch ontwerper. Hij verwierf bekendheid met zijn tekeningen voor het blad Vrij Nederland. Internationaal brak hij door met zijn werk voor The New Yorker en Humo. Swarte is de bedenker van de term ‘klare lijn', waarmee de stijl van Hergé doorgaans wordt aangeduid. Ook is Swarte architect, en ontwierp hij onder andere De Schuur in Haarlem. In de biografie ‘Sleutelmomenten – Joost Swarte' beschrijft journalist Ward Wijndelts de ontwikkeling die Swarte doormaakte. Femke van der Laan gaat met Joost Swarte in gesprek.

Voor deze aflevering sprak ik met tekenaar Joost Swarte. Hij vertelt over de projecten waarmee hij op dit moment bezig is. Zo is hij vrij druk met ontwerpen en tekeningen voor De Schuur in Haarlem ism. Mecanoo Architecten. Een ander project omvat appartementen aan de rand van Haarlem, waar hij samen met Her architecten ontwerpen voor heeft gemaakt. Het ontwerp van bijvoorbeeld de huisnummers, een glas-in-lood raam en een hek voor dit project, noemt Joost 'de krenten op de taart.' Maar, zoals hijzelf zegt, 'er moet ook gewoon getekend worden'. Dus werkt hij aan ideeën voor kinderboeken en spreekt hij vol liefde over het Friethoes in Haarlem, waar hij de huisstijl voor ontwierp. Voor modehuis Hermès verbeeldde hij het proces in hun ateliers. En uiteraard tekent hij ook nog steeds voor The New Yorker! Joost gunt de luisteraar een uniek inkijkje in zijn modus operandi. Zijn werk begint altijd met vooronderzoek, met een potlood in de hand en een stuk papier, want het tekenen 'helpt zijn hersens op weg.' Il revisite et crée les maquettes de plusieurs magazines tels que Métal Hurlant, (A Suivre), Télérama, Les Inrockuptibles et plus récemment, L'Équipe. L'exposition restitue son univers graphique en faisant dialoguer ses projets professionnels avec des pièces de sa collection personnelle (livres, objets d'art, luminaires, ustensiles insolites…), dans une scénographie signée Kevin Lebouvier.Né à Rouen en 1945, Étienne Robial se forme à l'école des Beaux-Arts de Rouen et à l'école des Arts et Métiers de Vevey en Suisse. Il débute sa carrière en 1970 en tant que directeur artistique pour les disques Barclay, les éditions Flipacchi… Il participe à la première formule du Point, réinvente celle de Télérama. En 1972, après avoir racheté une librairie, il co-fonde Futuropolis avec Florence Cestac. Il oeuvre pour faire connaître et reconnaître la bande dessinée d'auteur : Tardi, Bilal, Moebius, Götting, Joost Swarte, Ever Meulen, Baudoin, Menu, Chauzy, Jeanne Puchol, Miles Hyman… Il poursuit son activité d'éditeur jusqu'en 1994 avant de céder sa maison aux éditions Gallimard.Parallèlement à l'aventure Futuropolis, il fonde le studio On/Off en 1982 où il conçoit les habillages pour les grandes chaînes de télévision, parmi lesquelles Canal+, dont il est directeur artistique général depuis sa création en 1984. Joost Swarte is onder andere illustrator, striptekenaar en grafisch ontwerper. Zo maakte hij illustraties en omslagen voor bladen (van Vrij Nederland en Humo tot en met The New Yorker), stripboeken, lettertypes, logo's, postzegels, meubilair, glas-in-lood, en ontwierp hij verschillende gebouwen. Annemieke Bosman spreekt Joost Swarte. Hij viert dit jaar zijn vijftigjarig jubileum als illustrator, ontwerper en architect met een tentoonstelling in de Kunsthal Rotterdam. De tentoonstelling ‘Joost Swarte overal’ brengt met een dwarsdoorsnede van Swartes oeuvre een ode aan vijftig jaar tekenen, van zijn eerste strips, originele tekeningen, schetsen, ontwerpen en objecten tot recent werk. Ook is Swartes zoektocht naar de meest verrassende én iconische illustraties te zien aan de hand van niet eerder getoonde schetsen.

I talk with Dutch illustrator, designer and graphic artist Seb Agresti about books, learning from his creative hero, and how he plans to push himself out of his comfort zone creatively next year. Seb Agresti (Web; IG) is a Dutch illustrator, designer and graphic artist based in Rotterdam. Despite being quite new to the scene of editorial and commercial illustration (Seb only started illustrating full time in 2017), he has already garnered a reputation for impeccably composed and conceptually intriguing illustrations working for big publications like the NYT, the New Yorker and with brands like Warby Parker. Seb studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and in his final year of study, got an internship with the legendary comic artist and illustrator Joost Swarte. I find out exactly how Seb got his foot through the door and secured the internship. We also talk about how Seb stays inspired, how he surrounds himself with books and information to enrich his work, how he removes extraneous details and information from his work, how he thinks about composition. Seb also shared some advice he has for creatives starting out. They begin with Scratches #2, a comics and art anthology curated by Joost Swarte (and distributed in the Americas by Conundrum Press). They actually spend the majority of the episode discussing this collection, which includes mostly European artists. After that they eagerly jump into the latest issue of Eric Reynold's Now. This is Fantagraphics' exciting anthology that began last year. In this issue we see work by, among others, Walt Holcombe, Cynthia Alfonso, Roman Muradov, Tommi Parrish, Theo Ellsworth, Rebecca W. Kirby, and David Alvardo. Finally, they wrap up with Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive#1, the first in a four-issue limited series. Written by Lee and Michael Allred, and with art by Rich Tommaso, this is (to some degree) an updated handling of Dick Tracy in that the legendary detective is fighting crime in the current day. But although temporal setting is contemporary, the issue still has the feel of a classic comic-strip narrative, including big-presence villains, a detective with many tricks up his sleeve, and a storyline that at times seems outrageous...but in a good way. The Two Guys really hope that this Dick Tracy has a long life well after the limited series.

The Greenwich Village loft space occupied by Toon Books is one part office space, part living comics museum. There’s a row of iMacs where most of the business is done, from filling orders to taking product shots, while just above on a second level balcony, a spool of bubble wrap roughly the size of a Volkswagen Beetle leans against a wall of bookshelves fit for a small library. There are decades of fascinating ephemera lining the walls, original comics pages, an in-store cardboard cutout for Chris Ware’s Acme Novelty Library and, most compelling of all, the Gary Panter classic comics head mashup painting that graced the first issue of the RAW’s second volume (1989’s “Open Wounds from the Cutting Edge of Commix”). It’s hardly a surprise, of course, that so many amazing pieces call the space their home. Francoise Mouly has been here for decades herself, since the days when she and husband Art Spiegelman first altered the course of the New York City avant garde comics community with a nascent anthology aimed at offering a publishing home to unknowns like Charles Burns, Joost Swarte, Ben Katchor and, naturally, Spiegelman, who used those pulpy pages to serialize a groundbreaking first-hand account of the holocaust starring a cast of cat and mice. That the Toon Books office occupies the same space is certainly no coincidence. Like RAW before it, the kids comics publishing company was launched to fill a perceived hole in the comics community in the wake of a media that had arguably overcorrected. Thanks to trailblazing works like Maus, the headline-ready phrase “comics aren’t just for kids” had quickly turned from rallying cry to cliche as adult-focused books rapidly became the norm in the intervening decades since RAW closed its doors. In the 00s, Mouly — by then the art director of The New Yorker — pitched a line of education kids bolstered by Jeff Smith’s epic fantasy masterpiece to Scholastic. By 2008, the idea gave way to Toon Books, an independent entity focused on books by cartoonists like Spiegelman, Smith and Eleanor Davis aimed at teaching kids to read and bolstered by detailed lesson plans aimed at reintroducing comics into a classroom setting.  A half-dozen years later, Toons’ scope continues to grow, including the recent publication of a Hanzel and Gretel adaptation penned by Sandman scribe Neil Gaiman. I sat down with Mouly in the middle of Toon Books' cramped quarters to discuss the company's role in the ever-evolving perception of comics as a educational tool.
