Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

They couldn't let go. Thomas Jane and Mike Carey resurrect The Lycan, a comics project languishing for over fifteen years. Jane and screenwriter David James Kelly initiated the concept and hired Carey to write the script. An artist was also hired. That artist disappeared. An opportunity arose years later, and a new artist, Diego Yapur, finally materialized this ruthless tale of adventure and horror. The North Sea. 1797. A ship shatters on the shore of a Scottish isle. The hunters within spill upon the sand, encountering a Red Coat regiment and a Convent-turned-Fortress. The three factions mistrust each other but must find unity if they're to defend themselves from a hirsute plague. The Lycan recalls the gnarliest stories in the best comic book anthologies: Twisted Tales, Creepy, Vault of Horror, etc. Yet, it's given the space that writers like Bruce Jones were never afforded. Thomas Jane and Mike Carey are confident storytellers who've spent a lifetime consuming this beautiful medium and know they can let the title and the many engaging characters below it do the work. The beast is coming, but in The Lycan #1, the horror explored is utterly, painfully human. With the French Revolution on the horizon, paranoia grips everyone, and the faith carried by pirates, soldiers, and nuns is challenged and found fractured. How can they possibly fight their doggie dinner destiny? The Lycan allows our podcast conversation with Thomas Jane and Mike Carey to travel into various caves and crannies. We dig into their passion for the comic book medium and how it differs from movies (The Punisher) and novels (The Girl With All The Gifts). We discuss the comic's complicated origin and the challenge of collaboration, as well as the powerful, relatable themes at this book's center. Fear, paranoia, and faith - who needs a werewolf to do you in? The Lycan #1 is now available on ComiXology but will eventually see physical release through Ablaze. Tonight's Guest WeatherBrain grew up dreaming of being a meteorologist and has had a passion for weather ever since he was a kid.  He was born in Columbus Ohio where he went to high school and has lived there ever since. For college, he first went to Valparaiso for 1 year where he played baseball and took meteorology classes.  Then, he transferred to Ohio State, for his final 3 years of college, where he got his undergraduate in Atmospheric Sciences and a minor in Computer science (coding).  Since graduating from college, he has worked as a technology consultant for 7 years and has also been a cohost on the Storm Front Freak podcast since its inception.  Even though he initially decided to go into consulting after receiving an offer to go into TV meteorology right out of college, his true passion is and always has been weather.  He just recently started a Live Severe Weather streaming show (under the alias Storm Cat5) called Outbreak, where he along with other Storm Front Freaks nowcast tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and extreme weather across the U.S.. His goal with Outbreak is to bring my passion for weather to the world to get more people to love and understand weather better instead of being terrified of it.   If just one person comes away from their show knowing more about the weather and how to react to it, that's a success in Brady's book.  Also, he has had enough with not pursuing my passion for weather, which is really where Outbreak was born from. He loves every second that he is on Outbreak and his goal is to make it a household name.  They have had around seven shows so far.  Brady Harris, welcome to tonight's show and thanks for joining us. Also appearing tonight is a dedicated meteorologist and author.  She's known for her contributions to the Storm Front Freaks Podcast and has a passion for weather education.  She's the author of the "Frances Fox" books for children.  Her day job is in marketing for Atmospheric G2.  Cyrena Arnold, welcome to WeatherBrains. Last but certainly not least is two veterans of the show.  Hurricane specialist/chaser/severe weather expert Mark Sudduth and Mississippi State University professor Greg Nordstrom are here tonight with us to discuss their upcoming hail research in the Great Plains, Hurricane Season Outlook, and other topics.  Great to see you both and thanks for joining the show tonight. Tonight on WeatherBrains is the topic of a significant anniversary in the meteorological field.  Tonight's show focuses on the Super Outbreak of 1974.  Fifty years on, its impact is still being felt.  The warning process, victim impacts and how the event itself changed the weather community forever from a professional standpoint will all be discussed. Our first Guest WeatherBrain is a previous alumni of the show, most recently in 2020.  He received his Bachelor of Science in meteorology at Penn State University.  He received his Master's and PhD at the University of Chicago, where he studied tornadoes and severe storms under Dr. Ted Fujita.  He joined the faculty at Penn State in 1978 as an Associate Professor and taught courses in weather analysis and forecasting, natural disasters, as well as other topics.  He retired in 2019 after being the severe weather expert at The Weather Channel for over two decades.  Dr. Greg Forbes, we are honored to have you join the panel tonight. Our next Guest WeatherBrain is no stranger to anyone interested in severe weather.  He dedicated well over three decades to the National Weather Service, including 22 years as a Lead Forecaster at the SPC.  He significantly advanced the field of severe weather forecasting and mesoscale convective system motion.  His contributions are recognized with numerous awards and mentorships and have all left a lasting impact on the research and operational  forecasting community.  Steve Corfidi, welcome to the show. Guest WeatherBrain No. 3 is making his sixth appearance on the podcast.  He serves as the Director of NOAA's NWS Assistant Administrator for Weather Services.  He's significantly advanced weather operations in the United States through his extensive experience and pivotal roles he's previously played.  His career is distinguished by close collaboration with emergency managers.  Ken Graham, welcome to the show.
