Send us a textYou know, reality is a bitch when you're experiencing your own personal Event Horizon while wearing yogurt pants and a goiter meat mask. What the hell are we talking about? That's a very good question and one that can only be answered by listening to our continuation of Sci-Fi Spooktober. This week we watch and discuss the 1997 Sci-Fi Horror film Event Horizon directed by Paul Anderson. Has time been unkind to this movie or is it a hidden gem that bombed at the box office? The first Footnote podcast of the new season kicks off with this discussion of enviro-toons, a category - perhaps even sub-genre - of animation that speaks to the complex relationship that exists between the representations of (and labour processes behind) the animated medium and the environment. Topics include the questionable ‘greenness' of animation and how specific cartoons might engage ecological concerns within their narratives; anthropomorphic subjectivity as a way to display images of urban sprawl; the environmental impact and sustainability of animation production, from the reuse of cels during Classical Hollywood to the repurposing of biodegradable stop-motion sets; and what the contemporary era of AI and machine learning means for how we understand animation's growing cost to the environment. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**
YOOOO Welcome back to the Blerd and Beyond Podcast. Have you ever thought about What if your favorite cartoon characters were in the zombie apocalypse? Would they team up with each other? Well tonight we got the answers sway. This one has an interesting twist that you don't want to miss. Always Remember Captain Planet He's are hero
It's our fourth episode of the increasingly-inaccurately-titled Patreon Request "Month" 2025, and in the longest official episode of this podcast to date, the randomizer is going all the way back to 1988 to pick ArthurCrane's request for, quite simply, one of the greatest cinematic triumphs of all time, a tour-de-force of animation, live action and pre-CGI special effects wizardry, wrapped up in a still-relevant metaphorical fable about civil rights and gentrification set in an impossible fantasy world that combines a gritty film noir aesthetic with off-the-wall cartoon zaniness. Directed by future Oscar-winning blockbuster visionary Robert Zemeckis at the peak of his powers, with animation directed by often-underappreciated genius Richard Williams, and representing a Disney studio with new management eager to swing for the fences and conquer the world, this masterpiece was truly a once-in-a-lifetime perfect melding of artistry, ambition and anarchy. And granted, the whole project was blown out of the water just a few years later by the even greater achievement that was Ralph Bakshi's Cool World, but this movie was still pretty darn swell too. Cast & characters: Bob Hoskins (Eddie Valiant), Christopher Lloyd (Judge Doom), Charles Fleischer (Roger Rabbit/Benny the Cab), Kathleen Turner (Jessica Rabbit – voice), Joanna Cassidy (Dolores), Stubby Kaye (Marvin Acme), Alan Tilvern (R.K. Maroon), Richard LeParmentier (Lt. Santino), Lou Hirsch (Baby Herman – voice), Mel Blanc (Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck/Tweety – voices), Mae Questel (Betty Boop – voice). Most iconic scenes we cover: Jessica's “Why Don't You Do Right?” at the Ink & Paint Club, the “patty-cake” scandal photos, Benny the Cab chase, the Daffy vs. Donald dueling pianos, Judge Doom dipping the poor shoe, the handcuff gag in Eddie's office, the warehouse finale with the Dip cannon, the “shave and a haircut” knock, and Doom's Toon reveal with the steam-roller. Most quotable lines: “I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way.” • “Shave and a haircut—two bits!” • “Remember me, Eddie? When I killed your brother, I talked JUST… LIKE… THIS!” • “Patty-cake?!” • “Toons. Gets 'em every time.” We also shout out Amblin/Disney's mega crossover cameos (Bugs & Mickey free-fall!), the puppeteering tricks, shadow integration, and why this 1988 classic still feels mind-blowingly modern. Ever wonder where the magic started for animated characters stepping into the live-action world? While it's practically a genre of its own today, one groundbreaking '80s flick truly pioneered the concept as a full-length feature film. Get ready to dive into the toon-tastic world of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" from 1988!From the visionary minds of producer Steven Spielberg and director Robert Zemeckis, this Academy Award-winning box office sensation takes us to an alternate 1947 Hollywood where humans and 'Toons' co-exist. Our story follows a jaded human private eye reluctantly tangled in a zany conspiracy, tasked with helping a beloved animated rabbit clear his name after being framed for murder. So, hop on the back of the Red Car, hold on to your disappearing ink, and whatever you do, don't get dipped in The Dip! Join Nicholas Pepin, Laramy Wells, Bethany Wells, and your host, Tim Williams, as they pull back the curtain on this cinematic masterpiece on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode:Initially, there were to be seven weasels (Greasy, Sleazy, Wheezy, Smartass, Psycho, Stupid, and Slimy) to parody the seven dwarfs.Although the film's title is a question, no question mark appears in the title because this is considered bad luck in the industry.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDB, BoxOfficeMojohttps://www.cinemablend.com/movies/who-framed-roger-rabbit-behind-the-scenes-facts-about-the-moviehttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/62910/15-things-you-might-not-know-about-who-framed-roger-rabbitSome sections were composed by ChatGPTWe'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast!
