Yes, we have THE Mike Allred: father of Madman, creator of Doop, iZombie, and so many others, artist extraordinaire, and lover of comic books! If you didn't know, Mike started out in broadcasting, first on the radio and then as a TV reporter in Europe. But soon he's back in his native Oregon, chewing up the independent comics scene with graphic novels like Dead Air, Graphique Musique, and Grafik Muzik, as well as contributions to Creatures of the Id. One of those stories featured Frank Einstein, who Mike would go on to mold into his iconic Madman character. After Madman-ing it for a decade, Mike made for Marvel next, where he collaborated with Peter Milligan on X-Force (later X-Statix), then Matt Fraction on FF, and Dan Slott on Silver Surfer. He even found time to create and launch iZombie, which was adapted in a TV series. Now, he's at DC, tackling the big boys in Superman: Space Age and Batman: Dark Age (both with Mark Russell).Go back The Marvel Art of Michael Allred on Kickstarter here: http://kck.st/3YykYum. It doesn't take long to recognize pop culture's influence on the work of Michael Allred. Whether we're talking Madman, X-Statix, or Silver Surfer, his comics radiate his passion for music, art, and life. Some references are easy to spot, a few a little trickier, and others impossible unless you know the man personally. For us, his comics mostly equal comfort, a place to rush into and join for an hour or a bit longer. We adore many of Michael Allred's influences. So, our primary mission on this week's podcast was to dig thoroughly into one particular shared obsession, the nineteen-sixties boy band sensation, The Monkees. If you know Lisa, you're not at all surprised. If this is your first time listening to Comic Book Couples Counseling, you may need a touch more context. We'll get into it. Clover Press is currently crowdfunding The Marvel Art of Michael Allred on Kickstarter (Click Here To Check It Out). It's an enormous hardcover book showcasing Allred's greatest achievements within the House of Ideas, including our beloved Silver Surfer, but it's also peppered with pieces you may have missed over the years. As an avid art book collector, Michael Allred knows what fanatics like himself crave in such tomes, and he was determined to deliver the goods to the like-minded. Today's episode is a conversation we never imagined having when we launched the podcast, but considering how our show began with Norrin Radd and Dawn Greenwood, this surprise actually feels like the logical next chapter in our weird relationship experiment. It's even more special when, halfway through our conversation with Michael Allred, we're joined by his loving wife and collaborator, Laura Allred. We discuss how The Monkees simmer within every Michael Allred panel, the long-lasting effects of his collaboration with Dan Slott on Silver Surfer, how Michael and Laura learned to work together, and what an art book can mean when constructed with passion and thoughtful consideration. As of this writing, The Marvel Art of Michael Allred has seventeen days left in its Kickstarter campaign. Act quickly. Also, be sure to follow Michael Allred on Twitter, Instagram, and his website. Chris Stevens from The Golem of Venice Beach returns in Episode #660 this week! Chris Stevens is the multiple Eisner award-winning editor with a fascinating Kickstarter project called The Golem of Venice Beach, Volumes 1 and 2, which you can support at this link! The project has continued to attract a stellar line-up of creators. The first volume included Bill Sienkiewicz and Michael Allred, and this second book is described this way: “Book 2 will again be an oversized deluxe hardcover and is a whopping 184 pages (32 more than Book 1, which is also available for purchase in this campaign!). It picks up directly where the first volume left off in Venice Beach, California.” We discuss how the book came to be, who the characters are, and what we can expect from this creative team in the coming months. Be sure to support it before the project concludes this Friday, October 4, at 12:00 a.m.!

How you define your relationship determines its trajectory. If you see your romance as a triumph over adversity, you will triumph. This is one of the many lessons we took from our long ago exploration of Drs. John and Julie Gottman, and we discuss their philosophy thoroughly on this week's podcast with Maria Bamford and Scott Marvel Cassidy. Their new graphic novel from Fantagraphics, Hogbook and Lazer Eyes, details their complicated coupling, all told through the eyes of their various elder pugs. When Maria Bamford and Scott Marvel Cassidy were at their lowest, they signed up for the dating website O.K. Cupid, using the handles "Hogbook" and "Lazer Eyes." One date became two, which became three, then four. Their compatibility was less than a sure thing, but as they persisted, their connection solidified. Something about the other stirred understanding in themselves, and witnessing that epiphany through their canine housemates cleverly, maybe magically, creates profundity. After the Gottmans, we discuss the other classic texts that shaped our understanding of relationships: Dan Slott and Michael Allred's Silver Surfer. As we've previously covered on the show, entering a marriage is to engage with "The Infinite All-In." In a best-case scenario, one of you will leave the other to wallow in grief. As you'll hear, for Maria Bamford and Scott Marvel Cassidy, "the 50/50 risk" gives value to the partnership. As longtime admirers of Maria Bamford's standup comedy and television work and Scott Marvel Cassidy's comics and artistry, it was more than a joy to chat with them about Hogbook and Lazer Eyes. Discussing romance and collaboration with another creative couple helped us more clearly define our desires and wants for the future. Is a puppy on the horizon? Possibly. To continue this conversation online, follow Maria Bamford on Twitter, Instagram, and her Website. Follow Scott Marvel Cassidy on Instagram and his Website. Hogbook and Lazer Eyes is now available from Fantagraphics. Find it wherever fine comics are sold. As always, Omnibus, the Digital Comic Store and Reader, sponsors our Referrals segment. BAM POW COMIC HOUR PODCAST RETURNS TO THE STUDIO! Hello True Believers, were back from our extended break returning to the universe to bring you exciting new comic book collected edition and graphic novel conversations. Superman Space Age written by Mark Russell and art Michael Allred with colors by Laura Allred is BAM POW Comic Hour's 2023 book of the year. Like many retellings of Superman's origin story, Superman Space Age does explain the origins as the Man of Steel from out space who learns about who he is and why is Superman. The unique twist that this creative team is set with a background of America in the 1960s with real world events and historical figures with iconic DC characters merging to blend the two worlds together. Clark Kent is on a journey of finding his purpose of how he can help others with the time he has on earth. The age of super heroes is born and receiving the call to action has tremendous weight and the ability to make the right decision has a huge responsibility. This book has 3 extended chapters taking place in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. The art by Michael Allred has a unique cartoon stylized perspective. However, this creative team does an incredible job at this ambitious vision only they could accomplish. Chris Stevens from The Golem of Venice Beach and Matt Kindt from Flux House are featured in Episode #542 this week! First up is Chris Stevens, the multiple Eisner award-winning editor with a fascinating Kickstarter project called The Golem of Venice Beach, which you can support at this link! The project has attracted a stellar line-up of creators, including Bill Sienkiewicz and Michael Allred, and is described as “152-page epic about the adventures of a 400-year-old Golem spans from 16th century Europe to the horrors of World War II to modern day Venice Beach, where the Golem becomes entangled in a war between a gang and the police.” Be sure to support it before the project concludes this Friday, July 1, at 2:59 a.m.! Then everything wraps up with my conversation with Matt Kindt, who recently launched an ambitious boutique imprint with Dark Horse called Flux House! It will feature the writing (and sometimes art) of Kindt presented in startling and untraditional ways! Coming soon in July will be Mind Mgmt: Bootleg, a new 4-part mini-series by Kindt and four select artists. We discuss what we can expect from Flux House and Kindt in the coming months, so don't miss it! Show your thanks to Major Spoilers for this episode by becoming a Major Spoilers Patreon member. It will help ensure Wayne's Comics Podcast continues far into the future!
Time Codes: 00:00:31 - Introduction 00:02:38 - Getting ready for Halloween 00:06:29 - Scratches #2 00:49:27 - Now #4 01:22:19 - Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive #1 01:36:12 - Wrap up 01:37:27 - Contact us On this episode Sterg and Derek check out two new anthologies, as well as a recent incarnation of Dick Tracy. They begin with Scratches #2, a comics and art anthology curated by Joost Swarte (and distributed in the Americas by Conundrum Press). They actually spend the majority of the episode discussing this collection, which includes mostly European artists. After that they eagerly jump into the latest issue of Eric Reynold's Now. This is Fantagraphics' exciting anthology that began last year. In this issue we see work by, among others, Walt Holcombe, Cynthia Alfonso, Roman Muradov, Tommi Parrish, Theo Ellsworth, Rebecca W. Kirby, and David Alvardo. Finally, they wrap up with Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive#1, the first in a four-issue limited series. Written by Lee and Michael Allred, and with art by Rich Tommaso, this is (to some degree) an updated handling of Dick Tracy in that the legendary detective is fighting crime in the current day. But although temporal setting is contemporary, the issue still has the feel of a classic comic-strip narrative, including big-presence villains, a detective with many tricks up his sleeve, and a storyline that at times seems outrageous...but in a good way. The Two Guys really hope that this Dick Tracy has a long life well after the limited series.
