Claude Baudoin, co-chair of several OMG task forces, including the AI Platform Task Force, discussed the timeliness of AI standards. He highlighted the need for standards to address interoperability and portability issues in AI, citing examples like the portability of neural network models and standardization of image classifiers. Baudoin emphasized OMG's open process for determining standards through RFIs, contrasting it with ISO's more guideline-focused approach. He encouraged active participation in OMG to shape standards, offering a competitive advantage in the market. OMG's efforts aim to provide concrete, technical standards, unlike ISO's general advice. Action Items [ ] Issue a request for information to determine needed AI standards. [ ] Get involved in OMG's standards development process by becoming a member and attending meetings. Outline Introduction and Participant Roles Karen Quatromoni introduces herself as the Director of Public Relations for Object Management Group (OMG) and welcomes Bill Hoffman, the OMG CEO and chairman. Claude Baudoin introduces himself as the owner and principal at cebe IT and Knowledge Management, based in San Rafael, California. Claude mentions his extensive background in software engineering, IT management, and his long association with OMG, including his roles in various task forces and working groups. The focus of the podcast is on AI standards, and Claude is co-chairing the AI Platform Task Force for OMG. Timing of AI Standards Bill Hoffman discusses the rapid evolution of AI and the timeliness of discussing AI standards. Claude shares an anecdote from 1993 about the premature standardization debate and how it eventually led to the development of the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The fundamental issue is that lack of standards can lead to significant time wasted on interoperability and portability issues, hindering innovation. The goal is to identify when standards are needed to allow developers to focus more on innovation rather than technical challenges. Examples of AI Standards Needed Claude explains the current work on portability of neural network models with the help of Zephyr Solutions. The challenge is that neural network models cannot be easily moved from one platform to another due to the lack of a standard representation. Another area of interest is image classifiers, where there is a need for a standard to handle large datasets and descriptions of images. Other potential standards include metadata for data sets and semantic tagging of information, which are widely needed. Determining AI Standards Bill asks how OMG determines which AI standards are needed. OMG has an open process that involves issuing requests for information (RFIs) to gather input from the general public, not just OMG members. In 2019, NIST issued an RFI, but it was five years old and did not address the current landscape, including the rise of large language models. OMG is considering issuing a new RFI to gather more up-to-date input on needed standards. OMG's Approach to AI Standards Bill inquires about how OMG's efforts differ from other organizations like ISO and IEEE. ISO's standards are more like guidelines, while OMG focuses on more precise, technically detailed standards. OMG collaborates with ISO and IEEE, feeding specifications to ISO and having a liaison with IEEE's project group on AI terminology and data formats. OMG's work is more concrete and provides specific models and formats for users and developers. Getting Involved in OMG ...

This is a fairly comprehensive list of practical techniques that Joseph Murphy teaches in using your imagination and prayer to see your wishes fulfilled. When we come to analyze prayer, there are many different approaches or methods. We will not consider the formal, ritual prayers used in religious services. These have an important place in group worship. We are immediately concerned with the methods of personal prayer for use in your daily life and in helping others. Prayer is the formulation of an idea concerning something we wish to accomplish. Circumstances and individuals suggest different approaches, but all must establish a clear statement of the benefit, the healing, and the purpose for which the prayer is offered. The techniques Murphy covered are the visualization method, the mental movie method, visualization technique for an audience, the Baudoin technique, the sleeping technique, the thank you technique, the argumentative technique, soundwave therapy, the decree method and the secret place. These are just a few of the unique tools Murphy gives that you can use to see your wishes fulfilled.

As the opening night of the new Rusty Pick winds down, a shockwave tears across the sky as Sugar Grove is destroyed. To the north, the Archivist tracks Commander Johns and Bishop to Vault 51 and uncovers an experiment in progress controlled by a new powerful threat to Appalachia. Elsewhere, Commander Johns and Charles Bishop find themselves trapped in a fiery hellscape future in a neverending fight to the death as a ring of flames draws closer. These episodes are in loving memory to long time Bethesda Game Studios developer Ferret Baudoin, who recorded his lines prior to his untimely passing. His family has graciously allowed us to use them posthumously and it is fitting that in these episodes he will save the day, one last time. Can Medicine Move To Animal-Free Testing? Before a new drug can begin clinical trials in humans, it gets tested on animals. But things are changing. Late last year, Congress passed the FDA Modernization Act 2.0, which cleared the way for new drugs to skip animal testing. Can we expect to phase out animal testing altogether? Is it safe? And what technologies might make that possible? Guest host Flora Lichtman talks with Dr. Thomas Hartung, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing, to get a broader picture of alternatives to animal testing. Capturing Carbon With Tasty Fungus This week, a report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change brought dire warnings about our planet's climate future and an alert that drastic action is needed—now—to avoid catastrophe. One action the report recommends involves an overhaul of our food production systems to decrease their carbon impact. Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers suggest one possible way of sequestering some carbon dioxide might be cultivating certain kinds of edible mushrooms on land that has already been cultivated for agroforestry. The researchers are working with Lactarius deliciosus, commonly known as the saffron milk cap or red pine mushroom, but other species are possible as well. These mycorrhizal fungi live in a symbiotic relationship with the roots of the trees, increasing biomass and storing more carbon, while producing food on land that might have otherwise been used only for trees. In certain climates and with certain trees, these fungi can actually be a carbon-negative source of protein. However, to produce a pound of protein currently requires a lot of land and effort. The researchers are working to make forest fungal farming easier, and to expand the approach to a wider range of trees. SciFri's Charles Bergquist talks with Dr. Paul Thomas, author of that report and research director at the company Mycorrhizal Systems, a company that helps farmers grow truffles. He's also an honorary professor in the University of Stirling's Faculty of Natural Sciences in the UK. Whiskey Distillery On The Rocks After Fungus Spreads Lincoln County, Tennessee has been overcome by an unwelcome guest: whiskey fungus. It covers everything from houses and cars to stop signs and trees, and no amount of power washing seems to make it go away. Why has whiskey fungus attached to this small town? It feeds on ethanol from the famed Jack Daniel's distillery, which is in a neighboring county. Lincoln County isn't the first place to encounter this problem. Whiskey fungus was first documented in 1872 by a French pharmacist named Antonin Baudoin. Baudoin noted how mold caused distillery walls in Cognac to blacken, a phenomenon that has since been seen near distilleries across the world. The fungus was not given a name until 2007, when it was dubbed Baudoinia compniacensis, named for Antonin Baudoin. Joining guest host Flora Lichtman is James A. Scott, PhD, professor of public health at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario. Scott has studied whiskey fungus for over two decades, and gave it its scientific name. NASA's New Science Head Sees A Bright Future Last month, NASA announced Dr. Nicola Fox as the agency's new scientific leader. Fox is taking on a critical role at NASA, shaping the agency's science priorities and overseeing roughly 100 missions, with a budget of $7.8 billion. The portfolio includes space science from astrophysics and Earth science, covering the planets in our solar system to exoplanets far beyond. Previously, she was the director of the heliophysics division at NASA, which studies the Sun and its role in the solar system. SciFri senior producer Charles Bergquist talks with Dr. Nicola Fox, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate for NASA, about her new position, career path, and plans for science at NASA.
After decades of abandonment, the neon lights are glowing at the Rusty Pick tavern as Chad's gang hosts a grand reopening celebration. As new faces drift through the crowd, outsiders have come in search of the "Treasure of Appalachia" and one group will stumble upon something far more valuable. Elsewhere Commander Johns and Charles Bishop still are hunting for Hugo Warren, their trail ending at Sugar Grove. With the help of an old ally, they uncover dark secrets that raise even more questions about Project Lazarus and the Appalachia Experiment. The Judge is on the move, about to fire the first shot that will mark the beginning of the Battle for Appalachia. The board is set, the pieces are in place. It all starts now. Cathy McClive (Florida State University) offers the first full-length bilingual edition of an extraordinary treatise on childbirth written by a seventeenth-century French midwife in The Art of Childbirth: A Seventeenth-Century Midwife's Epistolary Treatise to Doctor Vallant (University of Toronto Press, 2022). In 1671, Marie Baudoin (1625-1700), head midwife and governor of the Hôtel-Dieu of Clermont-Ferrand, sent a treatise on the art of childbirth to her powerful Parisian patron, Dr. Vallant. The story of how Baudoin's knowledge and expertise as a midwife came to be expressed, recorded, and archived raises the question: Was Baudoin exceptional because she was herself extraordinary, or because her voice has reached us through Vallant's careful archival practices? Either way, Baudoin's treatise invites us to reconsider the limits of what we thought we knew midwives "could be and do" in seventeenth-century France. Grounding Marie Baudoin's text in a microanalysis of her life, work, and the Jansenist network between Paris and Clermont-Ferrand, this book connects historiographies of midwifery, Jansenism, hospital administration, public health, knowledge and record-keeping, and women's work, underscoring both Baudoin's capabilities and the archival accidents and intentions behind the preservation of her treatise in a letter.
