Model turned comedian Michelle de Swarte's life story has more twists and turns than most novels. A born and bred South Londoner, Michelle was scouted aged 19 and moved to New York to begin her modelling career working for the likes of Dolce and Gabbana and Versace. After two decades on the runway Michelle started doing stand up comedy and eventually moved back to London. Now making it as a successful writer and actor, Michelle is constantly evolving and redefining what it means to live life on your own terms. Her critically acclaimed BBC sitcom ‘Spent', came out in July. Both written by and starring Michelle, it's a hilarious, loosely autobiographical story of a bankrupt, ex model navigating the realities of her new life.In this funny yet reflective episode, Michelle brings her deadpan humour to dive into the extreme amount of change that she has gone through, discussing her upbringing being raised by her single mother, her queer grandmother, her time as a model and what working in the industry was actually like. Annie and Michelle also talk about Michelle's transition into comedy, money, the currency of beauty and how modelling young taught her the dangers of everyone curating their life on social media today.Watch Spent now on BBC Iplayer.GET IN TOUCHContact us at changespod@gmail.com with your emails and voice notes.Changes is a deaf friendly podcast, transcripts can be accessed here: https://www.anniemacmanus.com/changesPlease Note: The transcript is automatically generated in case you come across any typos or misquotes during your reading. Most films and TV shows are shot entirely out of sequence, so we went full Method on this week's podcast and decided to record the entire show out of sequence to see what it's like (and because we had an appointment with Rapman, but that's another story). The result? Anarchy. And possibly madness. Still, amidst the carnage, the discussion of a Pilot OnlyFans, and the cancellation of another of James' beloved shows, we still found time to tackle Apple's darkly comedic robot drama Sunny, and two BBC2 shows: Michelle de Swarte's Spent and Istanbul set police drama The Turkish Detective.
British scientist Dame Carol Robinson, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford and a trailblazer in the field of mass spectrometry, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award during this year's European Inventor Award 2024 ceremony. She will be first ever British winner. She is receiving the award not just for her outstanding work but also for championing women in STEM. She joins Nuala McGovern to explain why she's passionate about women in science. Woman's Hour has already spoken to five of the seven main political parties in the run up to the general election. Today, Nuala speaks to Maria Caulfield, Minister of State for Mental Health and Women's Health Strategy, representing the leader of the Conservative party, Rishi Sunak. Woman's Hour invited Labour's Sir Keir Starmer on to the programme as part of our series of party leader interviews ahead of the general election. Labour did not put forward a representative for this interview, so we hear from Ione Wells, BBC political correspondent, about Labour's manifesto pledges regarding women.By the time she was 19, Michelle De Swarte had gone from a council estate in London to the catwalks of Manhattan. Her twenties were a swirl of parties and high end glamour but by her thirties she was broke and in need - as she once put it - of a “new personality”. Desperate to find a way out of fashion, she reinvented herself as a stand-up comedian. Michelle De Swarte joins Nuala to talk about putting some of her own experiences into a new BBC comedy, Spent. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Olivia Skinner

What better way to herald the resurrection of weekly episodes than the return of the wonderful Michelle de Swarte to the show? The gang was thrilled to welcome Michelle back, this time in front of a live audience at the first DWSC London Residency of 2024.Luckily for everyone, Michelle has been victim of a crime more than once, and so had a fresh story to share with the crowd, before reminding us of her incredible detective abilities, soon finding her feet on the force, and helping to solve a tawdry tale of sweaty beasts and demanding dandies, which may, or may not involve an icon from history. As always, we round off the show with a story from a member of the audience, and in this case the perpetrator certainly operated with intent.Look out for Michelle's new show 'Spent' which will air on the BBC in the UK, during late spring 2024 and see below for details of how to see the Drunk Women LIVE...Tickets are now on sale for the DWSC London residency at their NEW VENUE of The Museum of Comedy - full details and tickets for March, April, May and June shows can be found here - Drunk Women Solving Crime - The UK's hit true crime comedy podcastYou can also support the show on Patreon, and for as little as £3 a month, have access to ad free episodes, bonus content, live zoom records AND be the subject of one of Taylor's incredible shout outs - Drunk Women Solving Crime | creating Podcasts | Patreon Hosted on Acast.
Model-turned-standup Michelle De Swarte knows how to make an entrance. And arriving at Grace's with her eat-it-or-climb-it comfort snack of choice, she doesn't disappoint. For the woman who left school at 14, signed as a model at 19, fell on the Gucci catwalk a month later, modelled for years in New York afterwards and then changed tack to become a comedian, life is what you make it. Straight-talking, no-nonsense, Michelle and Grace get down to business and discover their shared dependence on a well-known sandwich chain. There's glitz, there's glamour, and quite a lot of rude bits. Sorry, not sorry

(mg)
