COMICS ROT YOUR BRAIN! is a deep dive into ‘80s comics (plus a few notable exceptions). In this weekly podcast, screenwriters Chris Derrick (STAR TREK: PICARD) and Steven Bagatourian (AMERICAN GUN) discuss their favorite books, runs, and creators from the Bronze Age.• EPISODE 2:  This week, Chris and Steven explore the first couple issues of Don McGregor and Paul Gulacy's SABRE, published by Eclipse Comics in 1982. A  groundbreaking series that is a surreal, post-apocalyptic spectacle.SHOW NOTES:00:52 - Some background info on the storyline for SABRE — the first “graphic album” for the direct market — a sci-fi story set in the “distant future of 2,018” lol.4:40 - Don McGregor's delightfully ornery introductory essay to the Image reprint of SABRE.14:55 - The “throw you in the deep end”-style storytelling of SABRE — in media res, wildly expository and dense dialogue, the art of melodrama — all of it in service of casting a rather immersive spell. 18:33 - Soliloquies in Shakespeare and SABRE — “thought balloons” spoken aloud, and the eternal battle to believe in a smart audience that wants to be challenged. 23:14 -  “Pure comics!” A post-apocalyptic ghost of an amusement park and the bizarre evildoer known as Grouse — a rapscallion refugee from an animated film/Nazi cat-rat… The high weirdness of stories built specifically for comics.25:34 - The gloriously purple prose of Don McGregor and how Paul Gulacy's stunning artwork is at risk of being drowned under a roaring river of words.41:35 - Paul Gulacy in 1978 was merely 25 years old, and yet creating impressively lovely, Steranko-influenced art with a bizarre plasticine rigidity all its own.43:14 - Paul Gulacy never read “How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way” …and that's absolutely not a problem!47:13 - Don McGregor making life Hell for Paul Gulacy — “Draw me a giant train crash and a massive gun battle with dozens of characters... on horseback!”57:56 - Lord help us, we attempt to describe the psychedelic visual world of SABRE and its wild cast of characters.1:06:14 - The inconcievable notion of releasing a comic book as narratively dense as SABRE in the ADD world of today.1:12:53 - SABRE: THE EARLY FUTURE YEARS - a SABRE relaunch from Don McGregor …and Trevor Von Eeden?!! The Kickstarter that almost was.…01:19:26 - SABRE is a story about battling conformity and this also appeared to be one of Don McGregor's chief battles in life.1:23:52 - The Brit+ Visit ComicsRotYourBrain.com to get a look at some of the fantastic art discussed in our episodes!+ We appreciate your support of the show via Patreon: ComicsRotYourBrain+ Join us! Bruxelas inaugura retrospectiva do premiado quadrinista brasileiro Marcello Quintanilha

Welcome to Word Traveler, a daily podcast that aims to transform lives by a daily encounter with God through His word. Word Traveler is a Bible reading initiative, and today Dave Scriven introduces the content of his daily podcast which will post Sunday through Friday of each week. He also discusses the devotional practice of "PB&J" (Prayer, Bible, and Journaling). There are two hundred and sixty (260) weekdays (Monday through Friday) in any given year (52 weeks X 5 weekdays = 260). Coincidentally, there are also two hundred and sixty (260) chapters in the New Testament. By reading just one chapter of the New Testament every Monday through Friday, starting with Matthew, chapter 1 on the first Monday of the year, you will finish the entire New Testament, concluding with Revelation 22 on the final Friday of that same year! If you are a little more ambitious, you may wish to read the whole Old Testament in a year on this five day a week reading plan which you can find at www.wordtravler.org. Avid Bible students may wish to accomplish the entire Bible each year by simply reading both Old and New Testament columns in the Word Traveler reading plan. There is nothing magical about reading the whole Bible in a year. The study of God's Word should not be viewed as a competition or legal requirement for believers. You don't HAVE to read the Bible. You GET to. Enjoy your time in the Scriptures. Anticipate an encounter with Jesus. Very special thanks to the amazing and talented comic book artist, Paul Gulacy, who gave Dave permission to make copies of his print "The Spoken Law" as seen here in the Word Traveler podcast artwork. Thank you Paul! By the way, feel free to contact Dave anytime at dave@davescriven.com. Happy Reading!

They look at both Michael Chabon's The Escapist: Amazing Adventures (which was released this past February) as well as the latest collection, Michael Chabon's The Escapist: Pulse-Pounding Thrills, published in wide release this week. The two guys discuss the faux history that Chabon and a variety of writers and artists have created, wedging this narrative into our recognizable comic-book history. They're not able to discuss all of the selections in these two collections -- between both volumes, there are almost 50 Escapist stories, some never before published -- but they focus on many of the pieces that stand out to them. Among the Escapists stories they cover are those by such notable creators as Will Eisner, Eduardo Barreto, Jeffrey Brown, Howard Chaykin, Paul Gulacy, Jeff Parker, Marv Wolfman, Thomas Yeates, Brian K. Vaughan, Kyle Baker, Gene Colan, Matt Kindt, Kevin McCarthy, Bill Sienkiewicz, Jim Starlin, among many others.

Or, as it's more commonly known, Batman- Prey. If this seems like unusual subject matter for this show, keep in mind that Batman's 75th anniversary is over so the moratorium on the character has ended as well. This is a classic yet unsung Batman story that nobody except Magnus seems to remember, which means it's well worth talking about. His Excellency rationally analyzes some parts of the story, geeks out over others and generally a good time is had by all. Test-audiences were rendered blind over this episode's epic splendor so listener discretion is not only advised but actively encouraged. Once all that's over, Magnus opens up the ol' mailsack so that the peasants can compete with each other to heap fawning praise on the ground upon which their leader walks. Notwithstanding all the time spent letting the unwashed masses pay their humble tribute, homage His Excellency's awesomeness is never discouraged so you commoners are welcome to share your thoughts as well. DiManzocorp interns are ready, willing and able to accept bribes to present your missives to His Excellency, who can be reached at excellency@trentusmagnus.com, whereupon your potentate might consider thinking about the possibility of potentially discussing whatever you have in mind some day. Kung fu action and ring slinging abound as ancient Asian Green Lantern Jong Li liberates the Dragon Lord's temple and beats all of the @$$ of the evil baddies, eventually taking down the evil emperor, Multiple Chin. Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy turn in a great tale of a different kind of Lantern. And of course there's an issue of Green Lantern being covered, number 142 to be exact, where Green Lanterns Kyle Rayner and Jenny Lynn Hayden take on a trio of 90's holdovers that call themselves INFERNO!!! Well, Jenny takes them on while Kyle has an intervention with The Spectre and magically heals the thrid degree burns to the majority of his back. More changes are happening to Kyle, and it looks like it's building to something big. Plus, you won't believe who's the baddie behind behind it all...or maybe you will. Post Thanksgiving bloat getting you down? Do you need something to drown out the crowds during Black Friday shopping? Well, might I suggest the latest episode of Just One of the Guys, where we are continuing our look at the Judd Winick run on Green Lantern with Green Lantern #141, an issue that is setting up the upcoming Ion storyline. Plus it begins the kind of weird relationship between John Stewart and Fatality that will work its way into the current Green Lantern title. And we get an introduction of the very 90's group of villains known as...Inferno! It's like Rob Liefeld walked by the Green Lantern office and dropped off some concept art that Dale Eaglesham incorporated into the book. But wierd 90's characters are nowhere to be seen in our second book, which is Green Lantern: Dragon Lord #2 which continues our look at the "Elseworlds" story of a Chinese monk turned Green Lantern and his quest to rescue the concubine Jade Moon from the evil Emperor Multiple Chin. Yes, in this issue, everbody truly was kung-fu fighting, as plot development was foregone for cool action scenes. But still a decent read.
