The ongoing war in Gaza has exacerbated food insecurity among vulnerable populations in Israel, due, among other reasons, to the significant blow sustained by the agriculture sector. Despite rising inflation and the high cost of living, the Israeli public is expected to spend 7.8 billion shekels on food for Passover holiday, of which 250,000 tons valued at 1.9 billion shekels is expected to go to waste. At the same time, with the increased cost of living, more and more families struggle to make ends meet at the end of the month, and this holiday, the gap will grow even wider. What Should I Do With My Life? with Steph Horwitz

I am excited to introduce you today to Joseph Gitler, the founder and chairman of Leket Israel, the leading food rescue and resource organization in Israel. In 2022 ALONE, Leket distributed 27,000 tons of fruits and vegetables and over 2 million cooked meals. I have volunteered at Leket and they are doing such important work, have such creative campaigns, they are making such an impact. Throughout our chat, Joseph sprinkles career tips for immigrants in Israel, he gives lot of social and economical context in terms of what's been happening in Israel over the past 20+ years ago as well as the present day landscape to give you an understanding of the tech sector, the nonprofit sector, the many people who have fallen between the cracks, and where food waste and rescue comes into the picture. In this episode, Joseph shares about the fateful bar mitzvah he attended that sparked his desire to rescue cooked meals for those in need, we hash out this conundrum of being able to afford the high costs of living while wanting to work in impactful, charitable jobs and how to deal with the enormous pay gap that exists, how the monied world views the charity world, and so much more. In the first episode of Follow the Leader, I am fortunate to have Joseph Gitler one of my oldest and closest friends and most of all the founder & Chairman of Leket. Joseph has an incredible story in Leket and over 17 years has built Leket into Israel's largest food bank, working with over 210 agencies in Israel and most of all feeding between 150,00-200,00 people weekly. The story is quite fascinating as he literally started Leket out of his car after doing research and realizing there is a massive need in Israel when it comes to food wastage and the poor. The simple reality is Joseph led by example, he started with a problem he identified, organized everything early on, made the pickups and then asked for people to help with pickups. People followed as he led by example and with 110 employees, 50,000 volunteers coming every year to give back to Israel and the poor Joseph has truly personified what it means to be a leader.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE Joseph Gitler grew up as a nice Jewish boy, and a Zionist, in Manhattan, NY and later Teaneck, NJ. His career path as a lawyer, first in the U.S. and then, after making aliyah, in Israel, was proceeding nicely, until he noticed a gaping void in the Israeli charitable sector: the absence of a food bank or food rescue and recovery program, which exist all over the world. Leaving his career as an attorney, Gitler threw himself into the task of remedying that problem, and in the years since he has built a towering edifice of charity, benefiting the environment, thousands of volunteers, 210 recipient organizations, and of course the nation's poor. With a $15 million annual budget, Leket distributes fresh produce and prepared meals with a wholesale value of over $50 million dollars, and a retail value much beyond that. In a single year, they deliver 45 million pounds of fruits and vegetables and 3 million cooked meals, utilizing over 60,000 volunteers and a professional workforce over 100 strong.
