From Food Waste to Lifesaving Meals.  In this episode of The Israeli Trailblazers Podcast, host Jennifer Weissmann sits down with Joseph Gitler, founder of Leket Israel, to explore how one bold idea turned into a national model for fighting hunger and climate change.  Leket rescues surplus food—from hotel buffets to corporate cafeterias—and delivers it to those in need across Israel. What can't be eaten is sent to animals or composted, creating a near-zero waste system that feeds over 400,000 people each week.

The planet Earth may not be able to support the billions who call it home. Even in the wealthiest countries, too many people are hungry. We zoom in on the Jewish experience of issues connected with food justice – from the days of the Bible and before, to modern Israeli food innovation, and including the non-profits striving to provide those in need with that most basic of rights – the right to go to sleep and wake up without hunger. Our special guest today is Joseph Gitler, the founder of Leket – a leading NGO aspiring to implement Jewish values around food access towards a healthier society in body and soul.Links for Additional Reading (And Ways For You To Help…)Latet - Combating poverty and food insecurity in IsraelLeket Israel - Rescuing nutritious surplus food for those in needPantry Packers - Providing nutritional support to Israel's neediest familiesFollow us on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn! Farms are suffering in Israel and while food rescue organization ‘Leket' has primarily been working to get meals to those in need around the country, there's a new need that CEO Joe Gitler and his team are working to achieve – hanging on to Israel's farms. Five veteran new immigrants were recently recognized for their outstanding contribution to Israeli society in different spheres, especially during the Iron Swords war, in a ceremony at the presidential residence. The Aliyah and Integration Minister's Award was bestowed on Yom HaAliyah, Aliyah Day, which was marked on November 7. Among the recipients honored was Dr. Adriana Folberg-Blum, a Jerusalem resident who organized  volunteers to help farmers with the agriculture harvest in the Gaza periphery. Initially taking family and friends in her private car, as interest grew, the project expanded to a weekly bus, provided by Leket. Folberg-Blum, who was born in Brazil and moved to Israel from Canada more than 20 years ago, says the project has been a meaningful Israeli integration experience for both veteran and new immigrants.  As a mother of a combat soldier who served in Gaza during the war, she told KAN reporter Naomi Segal the initiative grew out of a desire to broaden volunteer efforts. If you are listening to this episode on a podcast app, please note that this episode was filmed in a studio and is also available in video form on our YouTube channel.  For the fifth installment of this special series, we sat down with Dr. Tal Becker, who serves as Vice President and Senior Faculty of the Kogod Research Center at Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. Tal was the former Legal Adviser of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is a veteran member of successive Israeli peace negotiation teams and, most recently, represented Israel before the International Court of Justice and played an instrumental role in negotiating and drafting the historic peace and normalization agreements (the "Abraham Accords"). Tal earned his doctorate from Columbia University in New York City, and is the recipient of numerous scholarly awards, including the Rabin Peace Prize, and the Guggenheim Prize for best international law book for his book "Terrorism and the State". Finally, we have received a number of requests for recommendations of organizations in Israel to donate to around this one-year anniversary of 10/07. There are so many organizations doing important work to help Israelis rebuild from the events of the last year — and the ongoing war. This list is by no means comprehensive. It is simply  an opportunity to highlight four groups whose work has moved us and who deserve additional support (we will add additional recommendations in the days ahead):  -IDF Widows & Orphans Organization (IDFWO), an Israeli non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the spouses and children of Israel's fallen heroes. They provide emotional care, financial assistance, educational opportunities, and a community for those affected most by Israel's wars. — https://www.idfwo.org/en/  -Since October 8, Hezbollah has fired thousands of rockets, anti-tank missiles, and explosive UAVs at Israeli civilian and military targets in the north. As worries mount, Rambam Medical Center has cared for the wounded and prepared for war. This 1,100-bed medical center in Haifa has transferred its critical medical care to an underground emergency hospital. Rambam's underground hospital – capable of housing 8,000 people — will play a critical role going forward in treating wounded soldiers and civilians; protecting and caring for the needs of medical staff and their families; and protecting and caring for the residents of Israel's Northern Region. — https://aforam.org/    -Leket Israel, Israel's largest food rescue operation, is committed to leading the safe, effective and efficient collection and distribution of surplus nutritious food in Israel to those who need it. To pick just one inspiring example: since October 7th, Leket has committed itself to providing healthy food to the 250,000 displaced Israelis, many of whom have been residing in hotels for the last year. Leket has installed produce stands in hotels across Israel, providing evacuees with a consistent supply of fresh fruit and vegetables, free of charge, which Leket purchases from struggling Israeli growers. — https://www.leket.org/en/   -Kav L'noar's therapy services have provided essential psychological support to communities in the South directly impacted by the war and the October 7th massacre. Their therapeutic interventions are tailored to address the unique emotional and psychological challenges faced by individuals affected by the war, empowering survivors to navigate the aftermath, rebuild resilience, and foster a sense of collective strength. — https://www.kavlnoar.org/israelatwar

The discussion delves into the shifting political affiliations among Jews, with a noticeable trend towards the political right as concerns about antisemitism and Israel's security become more pronounced. *** Share episode on X: https://tinyurl.com/vehsrjpx *** Before today's conversation, one housekeeping note. We are announcing our second "Call Me Back Live" Event. I will be talking to creators of Fauda -- Avi Issacharoff and Lior Raz. They are scripting OCTOBER 7th, a feature film on the heroic true story of Noam Tibon, who rescued his son Amir Tibon, a Haaretz journalist, and his young family, from Hamas terrorists who had invaded their home at Kibbutz Nahal Oz. Issacharoff is also is a war correspondent who has been embedded with the IDF in Gaza. The event is July 22 at 6pm in NYC at the Comedy Cellar. Part of the proceeds will be donated to Leket, Israel's leading food rescue organization, which has played a critical role working with farmers and kibbutizm in the Gaza envelope since 10/07. To RSVP, please go to comedycellar.com, click the "lineups" button on the top left and select "July 22". Now onto today's conversation. How close is Israel to reaching a hostage deal with Hamas and – with that – a temporary ceasefire that could possibly become a permanent ceasefire? And why does this negotiations process have direct implications for Israel's Northern border, between Hezbollah and Israel? Could a Gaza ceasefire result in a de-escalation on Israel's Northern border? To help us understand what's going on here, we have two guests today: -Nadav Eyal is a columnist for Yediot. Eyal has been covering Middle-Eastern and international politics for the last two decades for Israeli radio, print and television news. -Haviv Rettig-Gur has been a regular presence on this podcast since October 8. He is a senior political analyst for the Times of Israel, and has been an important interpreter for Western audiences of how to understand this conflict in broader historical terms. This week on the show, we're taking time to remember.  Memory is at the core of so much of Jewish life and tradition, especially during Passover. So we're sharing several stories about memories, from the individual to the collective, and from the difficult to the uplifting.  Tablet writer Gabriel Sanders reads his essay about preparing for his first Passover without his father, who spent the last years of his life with Alzeimer's disease. (The version of Ma Lecha Hayam featured in this story is performed by Paul and Lila Shapiro.) Jenny Rozbruch, who designed our Unorthodox and Beautifully Jewish logos, shows us the handmade biography she made for her survivor grandmother whose memories had begun to fade.  Producers Courtney Hazlett and Elie Bleier join photographer Ken Taranto as he documents the damage done to the south of Israel on October 7th, as well as the efforts to rebuild.  Author Rebecca Sugar discusses her new novel, Everything Is a Little Broken, based heavily on caring for her dad as he ages.  We're excited to share a special opportunity for Unorthodox listeners to join Tablet. Around the world, food insecurity impacts far too many lives. As the war rages on, and hunger threatens so many inside and outside of Israel, the words of the Haggadah implore: “Let all who are hungry come and eat.” Before we sit down for our festive Passover meals, Unorthodox is shining a light on those who help make sure everyone has access to food, year-round. Producers Courtney Hazlett and Elie Bleier visit the Jerusalem food pantry of Meir Panim, which gives out meals to those in need, including many affected by October 7th and the war.  We also meet Joseph Gitler, who founded Leket, Israel's National Food Bank, to rescue leftover food from farms and restaurants and distribute it to pantries, shelters, and now, temporary housing for displaced Israelis.  Abby Leibman, president and CEO of MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, discusses the organization's efforts to fight hunger through national policy making both in the U.S. and Israel.  We're excited to share a special opportunity for Unorthodox listeners to join Tablet. Sefer Hachinuch
Misvot #574-575: Fulfilling Pledges

Sefer Hachinuch

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 7, 2023

The Torah in Parashat Ki-Teseh (Debarim 23:22) commands that if a person makes a pledge to G-d, “Lo Te'aher Le'shalemo” – it is forbidden for him to delay the fulfillment of the pledge. In the next verse, the Torah issues an affirmative command to follow though on one's pledges: “Mosa Sefatecha Tishmor Ve'asita” (“You shall keep and perform that which leaves your mouth”). Fulfilling pledges thus involves two separate commands: a prohibition against delaying the fulfillment of a vow, and an affirmative command requiring the prompt fulfillment of the vow. The Sefer Ha'hinuch explains that the prohibition of “Bal Te'aher” (delaying the fulfillment of a pledge) forbids delaying the fulfillment of a pledge for the period of three Regalim (the pilgrimage festivals – Pesach, Shabuot and Sukkot). Meaning, if somebody vowed to offer a voluntary sacrifice in the Bet Ha'mikdash, he is in violation of “Bal Te'aher” only if three Regalim pass without him fulfilling the vow. The affirmative command to fulfill a pledge, however, is transgressed immediately, once one has the opportunity to fulfill the pledge and is unable to do so. Thus, if a person pledges money to charity, and he has the money available, then he is required to pay his pledge immediately, since there are, presumably, needy individuals who require charity, such that the pledge can be fulfilled right away. Some Poskim, however, maintain that even the prohibition of “Bal Te'aher” is violated if one does not immediately fulfill his pledge to charity. According to this view, the period of three Regalim is relevant to the case of a pledge to offer a sacrifice, and to the mandatory charitable donations that one is obligated to give, such as various portions of one's agricultural produce (Leket, Shicheha and Pe'a). When it comes to other forms of charity, however, in the view of these Poskim, one transgresses both the affirmative command and the prohibition of “Bal Te'aher” once he has the opportunity to fulfill his pledge but fails to do so. This applies also to pledges made to synagogues. A synagogue employs staff whose livelihoods depend on their salaries, and so they are considered like Aniyim (needy individuals) with respect to this Halacha. Once a person makes a pledge to a synagogue, he must fulfill his pledge as soon as he can, as the synagogue needs funds at all times to pay its employees. One who unnecessarily delays the fulfillment of his pledge to the synagogue violates the affirmative command of “Mosa Sefatecha Tishmor Ve'asita,” and, according to some Poskim, he also violates the prohibition of “Bal Te'aher.” If one does not have the funds available to fulfill his pledge, he should pay with a credit card. Of course, it is far easier to pledge than to pay. However, Halacha requires paying as quickly and easily as one pledges, without any unnecessary delays.

During the time between Passover and Shavuot, we “count the Omer,” marking the number of days since the Omer offering would have been brought. Why is this Omer offering so important that we have to mention it 49 consecutive nights, and how is it still relevant if we haven't even had the Temple for 2000 years? Join Rabbi Fohrman and Rivky Stern as they explore a tantalizing intertextual triangle which reveals just how significant the Omer is to our contemporary lives.Check out Rabbi Fohrman's course “Why do we celebrate Shavuot” to trace the thread of these ideas even further back, to even before the original Passover. What did you think of this episode? What Should I Do With My Life? with Steph Horwitz

I am excited to introduce you today to Joseph Gitler, the founder and chairman of Leket Israel, the leading food rescue and resource organization in Israel. In 2022 ALONE, Leket distributed 27,000 tons of fruits and vegetables and over 2 million cooked meals. I have volunteered at Leket and they are doing such important work, have such creative campaigns, they are making such an impact. Throughout our chat, Joseph sprinkles career tips for immigrants in Israel, he gives lot of social and economical context in terms of what's been happening in Israel over the past 20+ years ago as well as the present day landscape to give you an understanding of the tech sector, the nonprofit sector, the many people who have fallen between the cracks, and where food waste and rescue comes into the picture. In this episode, Joseph shares about the fateful bar mitzvah he attended that sparked his desire to rescue cooked meals for those in need, we hash out this conundrum of being able to afford the high costs of living while wanting to work in impactful, charitable jobs and how to deal with the enormous pay gap that exists, how the monied world views the charity world, and so much more. Joseph also shares his proudest moments, which just may surprise you!
