Special Guest: Jude Jennison: Founder of Leaders by Nature Change of any kind disrupts the way you live or work and creates uncertainty. The focus of change tends to be on the operational and strategic direction and the emotional impact on people is often overlooked. Resistance to change is often ignored and it is usually an emotional response to being out of the comfort zone. Employees and teams need greater support through change to help them make sense of the impact. Jude Jennison specialises in non-verbal behavioural change. She has written extensively about the emotional responses to uncertainty, the hidden dynamics that occur in every team and how to maximise performance by balancing results and relationships. Jude Jennison is Founder of Leaders by Nature, a leadership and team development company, specialising in non-verbal communication. Jude works with a herd of horses to transform leadership and team behaviour. She is author of three leadership books, host of two leadership podcasts and an inspirational speaker. Her leadership experience includes 17 years in IBM where she managed a budget of $1 billion. Join us as we discuss the hidden dynamics of team performance and the benefits of leading disruptive change with more empathy, clarity and confidence. Listen Live (Archive Available) Host: Andy Goram

When Jude decided to leave IBM to create a business around horses, with no experience whatsoever, people told her, understandably, that she was crazy. Her knowing that this was the right thing to do was so strong, though, that it pulled her through the adversity that she faced at learning something the hard way. Jude Jennison is Founder of Leaders by Nature, a company developing leaders and teams through disruptive change with less stress. Horses are now at the centre of her teachings, and she considers them a full part of her team. Jude is the author of three leadership books including Leading through uncertainty, based on interviews with CEOs as well as her findings from working with over 3000 leaders. She has three podcasts and has founded the Leadership Academy, an online service providing digital course and downloads on leadership and team issues.

I was delighted to have the tables turned this week as Duncan Brodie interviewed me on the skills that are needed by leaders in uncertain times. Of course, I had plenty to say about that. Not only did I write the book Leading through uncertainty, but I’ve also run over 20 masterclasses in the four weeks that we’ve been in lockdown, as well as having additional conversations. It has dominated my thoughts (and occasionally my sleep) as I’ve learned even more from every interaction with every person.

Horses don't care what your job title is. They're not impressed by the car you drive. The only way a horse will follow you is if it trusts you. And it will trust you only if you're leading authentically. Jude Jennison discovered the astonishing power of horses to transform people's approach to leadership when she faced her own fear of horses – now she has a herd of five, and I met them all at her book launch. But how do you write about something that can only be experienced? And how do you draw out stories of uncertainty and leadership from others? Find out how Jude approached the challenge in this week's episode, and why her launch was like no other.
Jane Austin is the Head of HR for Wave, a start-up business in the utility industry. Jane has experienced huge uncertainty in the last 18 months as the business has undergone massive change. She shares her passion for engaging people emotionally, the importance of communication and how to do it when you legally can't! I was inspired by Jane's ability to balance her enthusiasm for change with the understanding she has for the fact that change can be excruciating for others. She continually seeks ways to engage people, recognising that emotions need to be included as part of the process. Jane explains some key HR policy decisions she has made that would normally be considered unaffordable for a start-up. She explains the importance of being both strategic and operational in business and HR and why she believes investment in people policies is an ethical and moral obligation, as well as making good business sense. ©2018 Jude Jennison. Martin Yardley is the Deputy Chief Executive of Coventry City Council and is Head of Place which covers anything from bins and potholes to strategic regeneration of the city. Sue Grindrod is the CEO of Albert Dock in Liverpool. Sue is an advocate of being kind to yourself in the context of being realistic about what you can achieve. I think that's laudable in a world of fast-paced change. It's so easy to put ourselves under inordinate pressure. She talks a lot about balance – the balance between being a CEO and having a home life and interests outside of work, the paradox of being expected to have all the answers whilst working collaboratively and including people in the decision making, and the dichotomy of being strategic and also paying attention to the detail that is needed. ©2018 Jude Jennison.
