World famous documentarian of time periods through the art and expression of hip hop and Ellevan's favourite visual artist since a teenager, we have Justin Bua on the pod! https://justinbua.com Justin Bua is an artist, author, speaker and entrepreneur. He currently lives in Texas and is best known for his lyrical narrative paintings of musicians, DJs and similar characters who help define the urban landscape. Bua's distinctive figurative style combines his classical training with his background in graffiti, breakdancing and experience living in New York City.[3] The subjects of his paintings range from recognizable figures, such as Snoop Dogg and Muhammad Ali, to anonymous people pulled from his memories, including the DJ and guitar player for which he has become best known.[4] Each of Bua's subjects is ennobled within the urban landscape he paints and is often rendered with elongated limbs or hands, emphasizing the rhythm of the scene.[5] Bua exhibits worldwide and was featured in a 2011 event at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.[6] As an artist "for the people, by the people, of the people," Bua's fan base is diverse and ranges from former presidents, actors, musicians, professional athletes, dancers, to street kids and art connoisseurs Thank you so much for watching/listening to our podcast. In a world of hustlers, bustlers and innovators, we all seek balance. Combining classical realism at the urban edge of hip-hop and street art, Justin BUA balances being a forward thinking artist while reinventing the classical brush on canvas medium through original caricatures from his colorful youth, statement pieces of pop-culture icons and his one and only globally top selling posterized painting “the DJ”. Even if you haven't heard of him, you've most likely seen his work as it can be seen at The renowned Los Angeles County Museum of Art, on the TV shows he has hosted, music videos, major brand campaigns and gracing the walls in the homes of Hollywood and NBA royalty. This is a short and sweet episode with painter extraordinaire Justin Bua. You will notice that it's a bit more tough to hear- and this is because I was granted access to chat with him at an event in a supper club downtown Montreal. I was thrilled to meet him in person; I interviewed him almost 20 years ago when I was running and co-operating a music magazine called Vinyl. What I find interesting - is the same genuine kindness and concern to connect with people then, shone through no as well. It's a short interview not only because he was being pulled in a million directions, but also because a vicious thunder and lightening storm started and the make shift space we were in was in face the terrace that was closed in and we were getting drizzled on at first, and slowly but surely rained on. I would like to note, it didn't stop Justin one bit - I was more worried. Regardless, there are many gems that he drops in this short interview and happy to be able to share this with you. Justin Bua's work has been synonymous with capturing our culture , Hip Hop Idols, the raw and classic cool of Jazz and modern day heroes and icons. His work has become a baseline for all things reflective and cool pretty much like himself. He is rooted in gratitude and I feel that propels his creativity and his career further. I would love to chat with him in depth at a later date to see how some of the projects he talks about develop. Give thanks for giving this short capsule a listen and as always please feel free to send me your thoughts, feedback and comments. How do you feel issues surrounding gender and race are progressing in 2018? Sure, we try to keep things business-focused and objective, but when you spend as much time with people as we do and open up to one another, there are some concerns that we just can’t escape. The political and social climate that we're living in is incredibly challenging and it's time we open up in order to keep moving forward.   In this Episode, this Squadcast, this session for sharing and learning, we started by reflecting on guests from the last month and explaining the importance of each episode beyond what was originally spelled out. Justin Bua - the most popular urban artist of our time - had connection, focus and consistent vision; Karla Ticas - artist, photographer, business expert - had soul, passion and balance; and Sasha Perelman - badass entrepreneur, dream follower and visionary - had unrelenting ambition, confidence and foresight.   We threw ourselves into each episode and somewhere along way, after the knowledge dust had settled and the thicc lady was about to sing, we decided there were some underlying themes of the episodes that weren’t being addressed and that deserved our time and attention.   Please, open your hearts and ears and listen to this episode. The topics we cover are real, relevant and require resources before they can reconcile and seek out resolution. Alliteration aside, we want to hear your thoughts on what we cover and we want to hear you fight what is important to you. Give real feedback, share your story and your journey, and let’s continue to move things in the right direction.   Work hard, persist, grind, endure, experience, continue, push, last, craft, perfect, challenge...Hustle.

In his new book, The Legends of Hip Hop, artist Justin Bua profiles and paints fifty key figures, including everyone from Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash to President Obama and Jay-Z, providing a portrait of each legend in a style reminiscent of the great masters. The artwork is accompanied by an engaging autobiographical narrative that contextualizes the impact each icon has had on Bua's personal life and on the hip-hop culture at large.
