The cannabis industry is booming out of control right now. Many of us started admiring the greens with Cheech and Chong, others on more of a Half Baked train - but in recent years, it’s become clearer that regardless of its Schedule I DEA classification (which defines it as a drug with no currently accepted medical use), different parts of the plant can be essential to our health and recovery. The biggests issue seems to be two-fold: First, its half-baked regulatory stance makes entering the industry very difficult when navigating the thin lines of acceptable business practice and licensing, leaving much of the power in the hands of highly liquid individuals and businesses that are dollar-driven but don’t necessary care about the positive impact that green distribution could have on our economy; second, there’s a very negative perception of the drug and therefore those that use it - hoodlums and drugees looking to get high, eat too much food and do dumb shit. We promise you, that’s not always the case... Meet Denise Biderman, brilliant legal mind turned budding entrepreneur who tragically blew out both of her knee caps and instead of turning to dangerously addictive pain pills, decided to give cannabis a try and was able to float through recovery without all of the nasty side effects and dehabilitations that come with prolonged pain pill usage. With a newfound, material appreciation for its healing effects, Denise decided to take it upon herself to TAKL the barriers to marijuana and start an online community that creates a positive, resourceful environment for cannabusiness. In this episode of the 5 O’Clock Hustle podcast, we take in the knowledge as Denise exhales her experience and challenges; not only as someone entering the taboo cannabis industry, but also as a business owner that is building a community for two user-types simultaneously: service providers and the businesses that need them. Some of the topics we cover specifically are: sculpting your passion into a business plan how to leverage the expertise from your day job when the clock strikes 5, sculpting perceptions, the very important tips for finding a web/app developer and business partner that shares your vision and support your approach aligning your business goals with your lifestyle goals/perfect day. Can’t wait to get your feedback on this episode...we had a blast and learned a ton! We were actually introduced to Denise by our friend and past guest, Sasha Perelman, and we really appreciated the opportunity. Keep Hustlin! As passionate, motivated, relentless individuals – as entrepreneurs – we’re faced with an entirely different set of day-to-day challenges in additional to the traditional ones. A good example is our fear. Not of spiders or clowns (even though they are scary AF); I’m talking about our fear of potential. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us…” -Marianne Williamson As suggested, and especially for you, it’s the raw power you possess that keeps you up at night. Your half-tapped natural abilities, your unique approaches, your out-of-the-box ideas, your greatness. Trapped. Our guest for Episode 34 of the 5 O’Clock Hustle, Omari Harebin (sqspthemes.com), has felt that fear, which, as it often does, manifested itself into a feeling of being trapped. No way out, no way through; just stuck. Though the great thing about feeling trapped is that it’s a self-generated feeling and it can be overcame. Omari did just that and in this episode, he shares his strategy for fighting and beating fear so that you can move past it and pursue your greatness. Speaking of what keeps you up at night…do you ever lie awake in bed bouncing from great idea to great idea and wishing it were the start of the new day so you could go after it all? As Jeff Foxworthy’s twin business brother would say…Here’s Your Grind Sign. You guessed it! You’re an entrepreneur and it’s your job to be creative non-stop! The creative mind may dream, but it never sleeps… So listen in for some great tactics on how to control and harness that. Beyond what we cover above, this episode is a true opportunity and we really enjoyed a heartfelt, soulful conversation about the value of a good life and how to achieve it for yourself. My favorite piece personally was the 4 easy ways to Maximize your Hours, placing emphasis on being real with yourself and knowing what you’re going after. Instead of coming up with 5 and 10 year plans, close your eyes and imagine what your perfect, ideal day would consist of. If you’ve been looking for Jack Sparrow’s whacky ass compass to lead you in the right direction, this is the best alternative available. Turn us on (romantically or not) at the gym, on your drive, while you’re working your butt off, whatever. We do this week in and week out because we love learning with you and we love growing together. And please give us feedback if you like the direction we’re going in or you’d prefer we cover something specific…or if you just want to say hi. We’re here for you. Keep Hustlin. How do you feel issues surrounding gender and race are progressing in 2018? Sure, we try to keep things business-focused and objective, but when you spend as much time with people as we do and open up to one another, there are some concerns that we just can’t escape. The political and social climate that we're living in is incredibly challenging and it's time we open up in order to keep moving forward. In this Episode, this Squadcast, this session for sharing and learning, we started by reflecting on guests from the last month and explaining the importance of each episode beyond what was originally spelled out. Justin Bua - the most popular urban artist of our time - had connection, focus and consistent vision; Karla Ticas - artist, photographer, business expert - had soul, passion and balance; and Sasha Perelman - badass entrepreneur, dream follower and visionary - had unrelenting ambition, confidence and foresight. We threw ourselves into each episode and somewhere along way, after the knowledge dust had settled and the thicc lady was about to sing, we decided there were some underlying themes of the episodes that weren’t being addressed and that deserved our time and attention. Please, open your hearts and ears and listen to this episode. The topics we cover are real, relevant and require resources before they can reconcile and seek out resolution. Alliteration aside, we want to hear your thoughts on what we cover and we want to hear you fight what is important to you. Give real feedback, share your story and your journey, and let’s continue to move things in the right direction. Work hard, persist, grind, endure, experience, continue, push, last, craft, perfect, challenge...Hustle.
Please welcome our long-time friend and scholar of life, Brandon Jobsz, to this month’s Squadcast! Brandon, an almost-native of Sri Lanka, has an extensive [and impressive] background in real estate finance and interpersonal communications and after reading 1 new development book per week for the better portion of his life, is known within his circles as an invaluable wealth of knowledge and perspective. He’s also a ton of fun to hang out with. In this episode that discusses leadership lifestyles, the importance of true intention and the shifts of entrepreneurial and sales roles with the rise of Millennials and digitalization, Brandon’s objective and fact-based approach supports a beautiful platform for discussion. There are numerous times throughout the episode that end with him saying something like, “Yeah, actually I just read a book on that called _____ and it’s great because ________.” – could you really ask for a better resource!? We also look back on the hustle episodes from this month and pinpoint different learning that we captured and are either beginning to apply or have plans for doing so. From the Coach of preparation and selflessness Yancy to the Master of content and mindset Jared Smith to the student success stories at Quants Bakery. As Alan Jacobs says is his hit novel The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction, “You can reread not from love or hatred but from a sense that there's more to this book than you have been yet able to receive.” Even if you’ve listened to each episode already, who knows what content you were open to during the last go-round and what you’ll discover this time! Finally, we introduce some new things that we’re doing to make 5OH a better tool for you, our audience: -New Segments: Leader Lifestyle; 5 O’clock Basics -New Resource: Corkboard – pitch us on your ideas, events, companies or other projects and if we feel you’re aligned with 5OH, we’ll promote it.
"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail." - Ben Franklin Preparation. Often referred to as one of the single most important requirements for achieving your life's ambitions. We're big fans of prepping here at 5 O'Clock Hustle and in fact, we spend hours before each episode making sure that we know our guest thoroughly and understand how he/she might positively affect you, our wonderful listeners. As you hopefully know by now, we're also big on using the tools and resources available to help you get what you want. What do you get when you combine tools and preparation? Well friends, what you get is a coach. A mentor. A thought leader and inspiration. An unleasher of raw, unending potential. We hope you'll listen in and learn about a true leader. There is not a single person on this Earth that won't benefit from what Yancy Culp has to say. Why he wakes up every day, how he's been so successful in each of his endeavors, his reason for leaving an amazing and lucrative job to join the OCR circuit and start Yancy Camp - heck, he even gives us a concise version of some of the topics he speaks on at workshops and conferences in front of thousands. Such powerful, inspiring words. While listening to an interview last week where Coach Ben Curry was sharing his wisdom about six crucial traits of successful mentors, I couldn't help but see massive overlap with our guest for Episode 16, Yancy Culp. Yancy is a US Navy Veteran who has created a huge name for himself and his training program Yancy Camp in obstacle course racing (OCR), not only as a beast on the courses but also as the mastermind coach behind the global leading OCR athletes. As Yancy puts it... When I’m gone, I want people to say, "Yancy did everything he could to push others to live to their potential, while keeping a smile on everyone’s face and helped people live a healthier, passionate lifestyle." This episode of 5OH is heartfelt and inspiring. Yancy is a true mentor and his passion lies in helping others. He feels that he's given the daily opportunity to affect positive change and it shows through his consistently selfless actions and humility. In addition to Yancy Camp, he's also incredibly active in each community he touches, especially throughout countless youth programs. Please find an hour and throw this bad boy on Volume 10. You're about to have your first mental workout at Yancy Camp - it's hard work, you're going to break a sweat and obstacles will come up that you're going to have to find a way to overcome - but you'll be better for it.

STDs – Success requires Tools and Devotion (and action) Great humans say great things…it’s a fact. I mean, a lot of people say things that make sense or are inspiring, but the ones that have impacted their communities or actually changed the world have always been happy to share hints at how they did it. Here, have a listen: “Well done is better than well said” -Benjamin Franklin | “An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied.” -Arnold Glaslow | “There is only one proof of ability – action.” -Marie Ebner-Eschenbach. Ever wonder why we tend to look at these nuggets of brilliance as “cool quotes” instead of taking them to heart? These treasure maps are handed out all the time and yet when you read the lines above, you probably said to yourself, “well, those are cool quotes about taking action.” Humans are scared of their own potential and, even more so, scared that if they actually put their all into something it could blow up in their face. Well here’s a sentiment we’d like to spread: Unless failing means that you die (we don’t recommend that), all you’re doing by failing is getting closer to succeeding. If you thought that paragraph above was an introduction to a next-level Squadcast from the 5 O’Clock Hustle, you may be confused but you’re still right. This podcast was created to give people (including the hosts) what they need to reach new heights. We interview great humans every week and without fail they provide us with something special – expert learnings, unique perspectives, tricks to creating results, lessons from terrible stories that we can now avoid, all of it! Straight from the 5OH team to your eyes, your ears; don’t listen in for quotes. Listen to learn and to grow. That’s what we try to do and we’re excited to ride this wave together. These past few weeks we spoke with some truly great humans that shared their tips for taking action and utilizing the tools available. Perfect listening to start your day off with energy and focus. Listen with intention and see what you can get out of it. No quotes about it. Oh and we can’t say this enough – please take 30 seconds to leave reviews and feedback! It’s really hard to make sure you’re getting what you want out of this podcast without knowing what you want ;) Help me help you. Thanks so much! Sometimes when life gives you lemons…make podcasts. In this episode, the 5OH crew has a quick venting session (which is a ton of fun to listen to) that turns into some invaluable learning and introspection. First, a chat about how to better control your environment in the face of unforeseen circumstances – not like earthquakes or anything; more along the lines of last minute changes, planning issues, etc. Then, a self-awareness exercise where we find out about some crazy perceptions among the 5OHs and have a quick team-building session to keep us in stride. Finally, a recap of January’s episodes – what we loved, what we appreciated, what we could do better and what the Hell we’re doing, generally. This episode takes a be-real approach to the process behind successfully building and running something that relies on a team – one of the most important aspects of entrepreneurship. If you follow this podcast that we endearingly refer to as the 5 O’clock Hustle, you’re either pursuing your passion project or, at the least, coming to realize how important it is to have one. 9 to 5 is what you need and the rest is what you can’t live without. And while that sounds well and good, being in this boat means you’re going to come up against some strong currents. Acknowledging the challenge is the first step. To that, Dre and Chris take some extra time in this episode of 5OH to speak on the hills and hurdles of up-and-coming entrepreneurs; and how they persevere. As Maya Angelou brilliantly stated, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” Special Announcement: We have a new website! Jay Lieberman is a realtor. Oh and he’s a lawyer, founder of a charity, an author; he owns a few pizza restaurants and he’s a fellow podcaster. In summary, Jay is a busy man. Thankfully for us, he set some time aside to be the first guest on our humble little podcast and what a great guest he was. I first came across Jay’s work when searching for local podcasters. In Jay’s Conejo Valley Advice Givers Podcast, he interviews local businesses who share wonderful stories and insights about how and why their businesses were created and their process. It’s highly inspirational and I suggest you add it to your playlist, especially if you live in or near the Conejo Valley. Jay has also founded a local charity called the Conejo Valley Impact Club. If you’re from the area please take a minute and check out their website. Most recently, they raised $5,200 with 50 founding member sign ups! They are doing great things over there and you’ll hear more about it on the podcast, so take a listen! The fact of the matter is Jay is a hustler. He has realized his aspirations with action and we can all learn from him. It was a pleasure having him on and I hope you get as much out of the conversation as Dre and I did.
