In part 3 of 3, Hanshi McCarthy gives his toughts on the intersection of academia and research, his experiences at Shaolin, competitive & combative Karate, those who created and help shape the tradition, some of his favourite books, Olympic Taekwondo, HEMA and so much more, a deeply insightful and reflective conversation with someone who refused to drink the “coolade” and has at times kicked over the metaphorical tables of those who continue to sell it. Deep thanks to Hanshi Pattrick McCarthy for this deeply honest conversation. To watch this interview:https://youtu.be/H53ex2WW7jo?si=h4OHk9xey5i6850iHanshi Patrick McCarthy? Where to begin? This is part 1 of an incredible journey that continues to this day. I had an incredible conversation over a period of hours, he pulls no punches and he is passionately frank in his personal observations. But then, who could say he hasn't earned the right to articulate it?Pre-Internet, AI, Social Media meant getting bruised ribs and bloody knuckles, travelling in search of a personal truth, cultures, countries, languages, customs at a time when the world was a lot less accessible. He's run the gamut, more times than he probably cares to mention, changed minds and put a few long held illusions on blast along the way.Fighter, author, researcher, Sensei, student and much moreenjoy part 1 of 3 International Ryukyu Karate-jutsu Research Society ~ est. 1988琉球唐手術国際研究會http://www.koryu-uchinadi.com IRKRS Overview https://tinyurl.com/5xxmm4nbBooks by Patrick McCarthy https://tinyurl.com/5xf5m2sePatrick McCarthy Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Koryu.UchinadiKoryu Uchinadi Facebooktinyurl.com/4yu82323Youtubehttp://www.youtube.com/user/EastWestFightingArts?feature=mhee Blog http://irkrs.blogspot.com.au/ Something of interesthttps://tinyurl.com/vc7dfjswTransitioning to KU? http://irkrs.blogspot.com/2020/09/what-is-koryu-uchinaditransitioning-to.html?view=magazineBringing together like-minded people in pursuit of common goals and celebrating empowerment, personal achievement & camaraderie through Koryu Uchinadi. This week, Gavin and I are discussing the chaotic, kinetic, and colorfully crazy world of ‘Sister Street Fighter'! Starring one of the greatest martial arts actors you have probably never heard of, Etsuko (Sue) Shihomi, ‘Sister Street Fighter' holds its own against the previously established ‘Street Fighter' series starring the one and only Sonny Chiba. Take the hard-hitting, highly intricate fight choreography of Japanese martial arts cinema at that time, combine it with absolutely over the top villains straight out of a comic book, and then graciously add a splash of the 1960's Batman television series, and you will get just a GLIMPSE of what this epically good time will have in store for you! A protégé of the aforementioned Sonny Chiba and his Japanese Action Club (JAC) program, Etsuko Shihomi was a pioneer for female martial arts stars in terms of her athletic abilities and martial arts prowess. Possessing powerful movements and a magnetic screen presence, Etsuko paved the way for future female action stars by not only holding her own against her male counterparts but also surpassing them in many facets. ‘Sister Street Fighter' was the perfect launching pad for her solo career, giving her plenty of room to shine amongst a cast of absolutely insane characters and scenarios she must overcome. Oh, and the martial arts action? Let's just say it goes from start to finish, with her character of Koryu (aka Tina) taking on a plethora of different henchman: Amazonian kickboxers, nunchuck wielding assassins, and a lead villain with an iron claw and penchant for keeping an army of ruthless killers in his backyard for his personal amusement! After a successful career spanning just over a decade, Etsuko chose to retire and step away from the limelight to focus on her family, and then later a career in flower arrangement. Who knows what could have happened had she continued making movies, but we are grateful for the ones she did do and continue to enjoy them to this day! We discuss koryu arts and how they differ from practical arts, as well as some history of Miyamoto Musashi. We also discuss aikido in the real world, particularly in the health field - among other topics. A great discussion and one you don't want to miss! Reg mentions this post in the discussion, which caused some uproar in the aikido community. Here it is in it's entirety: ----- This group seems very responsive so I’d like to pose a question. Which is more important, form or function? As most of us are aikidoka I believe many of us are too concerned with form. Don’t misunderstand me form has it’s place, for example in a test. But what about function? When I worked in the security field I used my budo on a regular basis. I never thought about things like “if they attack me with a, b or c I’ll use defense e,f or g”. They would attack and in whatever the position ended up in I would apply a technique. Many times later when reviewing the CCTV I would recognize what I had done but it was not cognitive. 守破離 shu, ha, ri or take, break and leave is a common term in Japanese martial arts. I always think of it as form, logic and application (that’s not the dictionary or poetic translation, it’s how I think of it). In my opinion I’m more interested in seeing the function than the form. Any interesting thoughts on this? ----- For more information about Spirit Aikido Online: http://spiritaikido.com/spiritaikidoonline Paypal tipjar: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=B6AX94H6N4HBG

The second and concluding part of "The Way of the Ape" further explores the reality of martial arts evolution. We discuss the inevitability and unstoppable nature of change that underlies everything despite the desperation of some martial artists to cling to the past or attempts to replicate the past. In this episode of the Bay Area Martial Arts Podcast, Wade interviews Ami Toben, Director of consulting, training and special operations at HighCom Security Services and author of Surveillance Zone: The Hidden World of Corporate Surveillance Detection & Covert Special Operations; A book that offers a sneak peek into the world of the corporate surveillance detection, covert operations, and special operations. Ami Toben grew up in Israel, just off the coast of the Mediterranean. Around the age of 17, he fell in love with Martial Arts and began to study any way he could. Mainly, he sought out people passing through his Kibbutz (a rural Israel communal farming community) to teach him what they could of various Martial Arts. Through this, he discovered the Martial Art he really wanted to study; Aikido. He hatched a plan to travel to Japan to study at the Aikikai Headquarters — the original school of Aikido, in the heart of Tokyo. The plan, however, had to be put on hold as IDF service in Israel begins when you graduate high school. After serving in the military, he began his studies in Japan. He studied both Aikido and Koryu for four years then decided to move back to the United States to get a degree at UC Berkeley. Since then, he has been training in the Bay Area and now takes up both Aikido and Krav Maga. Ami Toben elaborates on his current career of working with HighCom Security Services — A company founded by Israelis that has a strong focus on preventative security. He speaks about why he joined and the security he provides. Wade and Ami deeply discuss the process of surveillance, how to disrupt hostile planning before it gets to execution and the role Martial Arts has played in both his professional and personal life. Key Takeaways: [1:18] Ami Toben's background in Martial Arts [4:30] The discovery of what he really wanted to study: Aikido [7:25] After serving his time in the military, Ami Toben makes his way to Japan to study Aikido.
