In this episode, Shaun and Rebecca sit down with Hema Persad, founder and principal designer of Sagrada Studio, a Los Angeles-based interior design firm creating layered, personal, and highly intentional residential and commercial spaces. Hema shares how she moved from law to celebrity styling to interior design, and how each chapter shaped the way she runs her studio today.Hema gets candid about building a luxury interior design business, creating tiered service offerings, managing client expectations, outsourcing strategically, working with contractors, and refusing to tolerate mediocrity in her team, her process, or her life. This conversation is packed with honest interior design business advice for designers who want stronger boundaries, better systems, and a more profitable studio. In this episode they discuss:How Hema transitioned from attorney to celebrity stylist to founder of Sagrada StudioWhy outsourcing CAD drawings and low-value tasks can help interior designers focus on higher-level workThe difference between full-service interior design, consultations, and smaller client offeringsHow Hema is building a three-tier design business with The Expert, in-studio consultations, and white glove full service designWhy showing too much behind-the-scenes process can undermine a luxury client experienceHow designers can manage client expectations around delays, procurement, contractors, and scope creepWhy people pleasing does not serve clients, teams, or interior design business ownersHow Hema structures her team around design, procurement, and project execution to improve accountabilityMentioned:Hema Persad on InstagramSagrada Studio on InstagramSagrada Studio's WebsiteOur links:Subscribe and leave a review - Apple PodcastsLike, Comment, & Follow - Hot Young Designers Club InstagramRebecca's InstagramShaun's InstagramFor more information - Check out the website

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Hema Gupta, author of the book The Things We Never Said Out Loud. A third-year medical student by day and confessor of silenced truths by night, the author behind the things we never said out loud exists in the liminal space between diagnosis and disclosure, between the clinical and the confessional. With hands trained to heal the body and a pen that excavates the soul, they understand that both medicine and poetry are acts of witnessing, of looking at what others turn away from and naming it with precision and tenderness.   In the things we never said out loud, available through Barnes & Noble, they turn their gaze inward to the unspoken territories we all inhabit: the secrets that calcify in our chests, the truths that live just beneath our tongues, the confessions we rehearse in darkness but never release into light. This debut collection proves that sometimes the most powerful medicine is simply giving voice to what we've kept buried.   As a new voice in contemporary poetry, they are building a community of readers who recognize themselves in these unearthed truths. You can follow their journey at the intersection of scalpel and stanza on social media @hemaabemaa, where healing and writing continue their conversation.   In my book review, I stated The Things We Never Said Out Loud is a book of poetry by Hema Gupta. These poems look at a relationship between a man and a woman focusing on what they think of one another, what others think of them, and what they think of themselves. Although not usually into poetry, I felt this volume was very relatable and down-to-earth. I could see myself, especially as a younger woman. I also found the verses to be fun and flirty, with a bit of an edge that felt slightly dangerous - or at least emboldened.   I don't understand the hows and whys of poetry, but these poems caused me to think back on days of early love. Those days when you want it to last but wonder if it will. When you hope it is going somewhere but sometimes your doubts get in the way. For me, as a newly widowed woman, they made me pine for a love that will never be again.   I'd say, give this book of poems a try. I think you'll like them.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   You can follow Author Hema Gupta IG: @hemaabemaa   Purchase The Things We Never Said Out Loud on Barnes & Noble: Paperback: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-things-we-never-said-out-loud-hema-gupta/1147360260   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? New episode out now! We watched the first episode of the atmospheric 2017 miniseries The Loch, or Loch Ness in the US. We talk about trying to keep track of the multitude of characters and their connections in this small tourist town, discuss the many subplots and possible red herrings, wonder just how many secrets are hidden within the community, and enjoyed the working relationship between the DCI and the local DS. We loved the setting on Loch Ness and really enjoyed the vibes, thought the tourist town setting was interesting as it is a place people pass through, debate how to handle releasing info about a possible serial killer to the public, and discuss how it can be difficult to judge a miniseries based on the infodump of a first episode. Katy's daily newspaper is Tumblr, Carrie climbed a mountain and only fell down once, Maddy shares an interesting story about something she encountered at work, and Mack wants to get into HEMA fighting. We also discuss lobotomy techniques, learn fun facts about curling stones, talk a lot about various viscera, and share tips on what media to consume to keep the howling void away. Listen to hear more about Colin Mochrie, thalassophobia, rivalries, Hamnet, geology, news bloopers, duck boat tours, and hot Scots. Then Ryan wants to leave Andy in a field to see if he’ll get abducted. Then the boys review the new health psa about how healthy it is to crank the hog. Ryan gets angry that they didn’t check his prostate during his colonoscopy. Andy dreams about thongs as Ryan explains his plan to capture an alien. Ryan is upset that Andy doesn’t think newspapers report on bestiality that much. Andy gets his ass whooped at HEMA by a veteran and has to power through the defeat. The boys talk about Flowers For Algernon and Pope Leo. Ryan has some conspiracy theories on the Catholic Church while Andy notices how much Ryan smells like hot dogs. Then Ryan freaks out when Andy opens his bathroom window and starts shouting Ryan’s full first and last name while saying there’s doodie everywhere. Andrew gets turned on by breast reduction scars. Ryan imagines how poorly Andrew would do with online dating then impersonates Andy trying to get his brain to turn over like a shitty motor. Electric toothbrushes catch on fire and they freak out about lithium batteries. Ryan uses a selfie stick to talk on the phone. Ryan catches Andy listening to their own podcast again and asserts that Andy must be pretending he’s listening to other people. They talk about how they both thought spontaneous human combustion would be a much bigger deal than it ended up being. Ryan tries to impress high schoolers on the ski lift and this does not go unpunished by Andy.

Thema: Warum Selbstorganisation oft zu viel will.

She has competed across the US and internationally, and she has won medals in multiple weapon categories. Ella is the lead tournament organizer of Iron Gate Exhibition, Benedict's Big Day, and Long Tail. Ella has worked in many minority-focused spaces, both within historical martial arts and in her career as an illustrator. Having dealt with chronic illness and disability her entire martial arts career, she led the creation of BCHF's seated fencing practice, one of the first of its kind. And in 2025 she organized the first seated longsword tournament, and she aims to continue pushing the HEMA community further towards inclusion for all athletes. In our conversation we talk about dealing with chronic illness, especially within HEMA, and the adaptations that Ella makes to her training and recovery time. This is a useful conversation for anyone involved in running a club, or thinking of starting one, because we talk about what to charge students, and the ethos that will help make your club inclusive and welcoming. We talk about the adaptations salles should make so they become places where people can hang out and still be part of the community, even if they are not actively taking part in a session. Most clubs are not going to be equipped with disability accommodations already in place, so we discuss how coaches can support students with different needs, and what a club can do to actively show that people with disabilities are welcome. We also hear about the fascinating process of adapting historical martial arts to seated fencing: how to adapt the system, how to create suitable seats and where to position people, and how a seated fencer can fence against someone standing up.   Links of Interest BCHF Website: https://www.blackcathistoricalfencing.com/ BCHF Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blackcathistoricalfencing/   Ella's art website: https://www.icecubesanddragonfire.com/ Ella's art Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/icecubesanddragonfire/?hl=en To see the graphic novel mentioned: https://markosia.com/2025/08/18/emily-corn-vol-2-part-1-finding-the-light-out-now/   IGX 2026 Ruleset, which include the most up to date seated fencing rules Ella has written: https://irongateexhibition.com/tournaments-spring/   Utah Fencing Federation: https://www.utahfencingfoundation.org/   For photos from Long Tail 2026, including photos of their seated longsword tournament see https://swordschool.shop/blogs/podcast/episode-216-making-seated-longsword-work-with-ella-rose

What happens when a high-achieving woman checks every box society handed her — only to realize none of it was truly hers? After nearly 20 years as a corporate HR executive in tech and biotech startups, she had the corner office, the stock options, and the title, but felt completely disconnected. The breaking point came during IVF, when she realized mid-transfer that she didn't want children — and her husband, waiting in the car, felt exactly the same. That moment of radical honesty sent her on a years-long journey of unraveling everything she'd been told to want.In this episode, Hema walks Stephanie through the philosophy behind her coaching practice, Recalibrate, where she works one-on-one with high-achieving women in midlife who have "made it" by every measure but feel unfulfilled. She shares her process of guiding clients from discovery to a conscious "choice point," then into intentionally building a life rooted in desire rather than expectation — no quitting required, just micro-shifts in awareness. hema.to is building AI-powered diagnostic infrastructure for cytometry—a specialized area of laboratory medicine analyzing immune system data to detect blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. Unlike radiology or pathology where AI solutions are abundant, cytometry has remained largely untouched by the AI wave, creating both opportunity and isolation for the Munich-based company. In a recent episode of BUILDERS, we sat down with Karsten Miermans, CEO at hema.to GmbH, to discuss why they're deliberately keeping sales founder-led despite having paying customers, how South America became an unexpected beachhead market, and what it actually means to build infrastructure versus point solutions in healthcare. Topics Discussed:  From consulting project to venture-backed company: recognizing scalability in hindsight  The workflow integration problem killing healthcare AI implementations  Infrastructure versus technology: why healthcare AI isn't just about the algorithm  Learning ideal customer profile after 18 months of being "all over the place"  Why South America's governance structure enables faster adoption than the US  Resisting the urge to hire sales before achieving true repeatability  The 10-year vision: shifting from "watch and wait" to "predict and prevent" in immune disease GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Pattern matching fails when you're an outsider—budget 18+ months to find your beachhead: Karsten assumed every application of their diagnostic method was the same and spent a year and a half "blue eyed" (naively optimistic) before identifying their true ICP. The outsider advantage lets you reimagine workflows insiders can't, but you'll incorrectly assume transferability across use cases. Don't expect repeatability in year one when entering regulated, workflow-dependent markets. Infrastructure requires multi-stakeholder orchestration—resource for enterprise complexity from day one: Karsten distinguishes technology (point solutions, single users) from infrastructure (shared resources requiring data exchange and workflow integration). In healthcare, this means integration into hospital systems, databases, and electronic health records across multiple stakeholders. "Every sale becomes enterprise sales" even for individual labs because of this infrastructure requirement. Founders building horizontal platforms should model sales cycles and resource requirements as enterprise from the start, regardless of deal size. Your ICP is cognitively overloaded—they won't understand your category innovation: Doctors are "under so much pressure that they just don't have any cognitive capacity left" to philosophically evaluate why AI might be difficult to implement or how infrastructure differs from technology. They need problems solved within their existing mental models. Skip the category education. Frame everything as workflow enhancement, not innovation. Let sophistication emerge through implementation, not pitch decks. Revenue doesn't equal repeatability—know when you're still in discovery mode: Despite having paying customers, Karsten explicitly states "we're not at product-market fit yet" because they're "discovering and learning things with every new laboratory hospital" around data privacy, integration, and AI deployment. The PMF signal isn't customer count or revenue—it's when the process becomes predictable, customers refer others, and you stop discovering new requirements. Hiring sales before this point scales complexity, not revenue. Regulatory friction determines market sequencing, not just market size: US governance complexity turns every deal into heavy enterprise sales with "many stakeholders," while South America proved "much more willing to move with fewer processes," making them "just much faster to adopt innovative technology." This wasn't strategy—Karsten's CTO speaks Spanish through a personal connection. But the lesson transfers: for infrastructure plays in regulated markets, test adoption velocity in lower-governance environments first to build proof points, even if TAM looks smaller on paper. In healthcare, marketing is clinical evidence—customer success creates your GTM flywheel: Karsten spends minimal time on marketing because beyond the first 5-10 users, doctors "want to see clinical evidence, they want to see papers, they want to see maybe that a friend of theirs is using it." Marketing in healthcare isn't content or demand gen—it's peer validation and published proof. Founders should structure early customer engagements to generate this evidence, not just revenue. The "marketing sales flywheel really does kick in much more once you have product market fit" because PMF enables the evidence generation required for credibility. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co // Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. Some of China's largest technology companies have spent tens of billions of yuan this year to push artificial intelligence initiatives for the upcoming Spring Festival, marking their most significant effort yet to take AI applications out of labs and into the daily lives of a nation of more than 1.4 billion consumers. The move could potentially give China an early lead in large-scale consumer AI adoption, which may be difficult for its rivals in the United States to replicate, industry experts said. At the center of this effort is Alibaba's Qwen app, which announced a 3 billion yuan ($420 million) holiday campaign starting on Friday. The campaign offers users free food, retail and services, but only if they make purchases through the app's AI-assisted ordering system. For example, users could buy a cup of milk tea or coffee for as little as 0.01 yuan, an offer that has sparked a social media frenzy. Many consumers joked online that they were drinking their first "AI milk tea". Alibaba's wider ecosystem, including Taobao flash sales, travel platform Fliggy, ticketing service Damai, grocery chain Hema and payment service Alipay are also participating in the campaign by linking AI prompts directly to ordering and payment systems. Wang Peng, a researcher at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, said: "The move is not simply promotional largesse. It is a behavioral experiment aimed at lowering the cost of trials to near zero and habituating users to use AI for decision-making and transactions." Among the other players, Tencent Holdings' Yuanbao AI assistant distributed 1 billion yuan in digital red envelopes while testing new AI social features. Baidu Inc distributed 500 million yuan in incentives within its core Baidu app, encouraging a user shift from "search" to "ask AI". AI"。According to Wang, the researcher, this Spring Festival may become a turning point where ordinary users, at scale, form the habit of turning to AI when they need something. While Chinese firms are integrating AI into food delivery, travel booking, entertainment and retail, US companies are focusing more on workplace productivity and software automation. Wang emphasized that China's digital infrastructure, including its large population of mobile internet users, deeply entrenched mobile payment systems, and mature online-to-offline commerce networks, gives the country a natural advantage. These allow AI systems not only to suggest actions but also to execute payments and services within a closed loop — a level of integration that is harder to achieve in more fragmented Western digital markets," he added. However, Pan Helin, a member of an expert committee under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, warned that heavy subsidies do not guarantee lasting behavioral change. Holiday red envelopes and free offers can drive a temporary surge, but the real test comes after the incentives fade. The key question is whether users will still order drinks or plan trips via AI when there are no discounts." Only AI products that solve real problems and integrate into everyday life will endure. For China's tech giants, the real test of turning trial into habit is only beginning," he said. frenzy /ˈfren.zi/狂热,疯狂promotional largesse /prəˈməʊ.ʃən.əl lɑːrˈʒes/促销优惠/推广让利temporary surge /ˈtem.pər.ər.i sɜːrdʒ/暂时激增/短期热潮incentive /ɪnˈsen.tɪv/激励措施/奖励

Violence has exploded since the 1990s, with the Hema and Lendu communities clashing over access to land and mining resources. According to the United Nations, over 1,000 people have been killed since January and more than a million inhabitants have been driven from their homes. Our correspondents Aurélie Bazzara-Kibangula and Emmet Livingstone spoke to residents traumatised by the atrocities. Warning: this report contains descriptions of violence that some viewers may find disturbing.

Clarke is a historical fencer with a focus on Renaissance-era German fencing traditions, specifically the work of Joachim Meyer. He has been practicing since 2016, first in the Rocky Mountains before returning home to the Pacific Northwest. For the last few years, he has been delving into the archives, researching the lives and times of the contemporaries of Joachim Meyer, publishing his findings, including illuminating Joachim Meyer's family through his Substack, Evergreen Historical Fencing. In our chat, we discuss the appeal of delving into archives instead of just doing swordfighting: does having a better understanding of the lives of past masters help us fence better, or have a deeper enjoyment of practising historical fencing? Liam explains who Meyer was, his family's background in paper production, and what life was like in city states like Strasbourg in the 16th Century. Every (male) citizen had a responsibility to own arms and armour and be prepared to protect the city, whether on night watch, military conflicts, or fire calls. Liam's research can help us picture what daily life was like for Meyer and his contemporaries, and how they had the same struggles with money and other commitments that we have today. One thing Liam's research has highlighted is how young these fencing masters were, and how a “Fechtmeister” wouldn't have been a wizened old man with a long beard. Meyer was only in his early thirties when he died. Many of us practising HEMA today would qualify as a ‘Master', which is a nice thought for reducing the imposter syndrome! Did you know that the paraffin wax from your last pedicure might have been peeled off someone else's feet and reused on yours? Gross, and…the health surprises lurking in the nail salon go FAR beyond that.  Lanna Dang, owner of Pampr'd Soul in Scottsdale, completely transformed how I think about nail salons. Growing up inside her parents' nail salon, Lanna witnessed practices that would make your skin crawl: from tools that are barely sanitized between clients to name-brand polish bottles being secretly refilled with toxic knockoffs. She reveals why that "healthy" dip powder is actually acrylic in disguise and explains how the chemicals in your regular gel manicure could be disrupting your hormones and contributing to that stubborn weight gain and exhaustion you can't shake. We dive deep into what HEMA, formaldehyde, and toluene are really doing to your body, especially as a midlife woman already dealing with hormonal chaos. She shares the critical questions you need to ask before your next appointment and reveals cleaner alternatives that won't force you to give up your beloved nail routine. It's time to make informed choices at the nail salon, especially when your toxic load might be the missing piece of your health puzzle. Whether you're a gel devotee or acrylic enthusiast, this conversation will forever change how you approach your nail care routine.   Catch the full episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://bit.ly/MidlifeConversationsYouTube    Learn More About Lanna Dang    Instagram ➜ https://www.instagram.com/lannadang Website ➜  https://pamprdsoul.com/   Free Gifts for being a listener of Midlife Conversations! This episode features Hema Mandanna, history teacher and administrator at Mallya Aditi International School, Bangalore, in conversation with host Philippa Wraithmell. Hema reflects on her 27-year teaching journey and the evolution of education technology in India's tech capital. The discussion covers key themes of teacher autonomy, professional development, and the integration of iPads and accessibility tools that transformed learning for students with diverse needs. Hema recounts how early adoption of EdTech positioned her school to handle challenges such as remote learning and inclusivity, ensuring technology serves pedagogy rather than the other way around. The episode also examines the school's proactive engagement with AI in education, ongoing teacher training, and how a culture of openness and collaboration fosters confident, critical thinkers. Hema's story stands as a testament to how innovation and equity can coexist when educators lead with trust, creativity, and compassion.
