Send us a textOn this special Christmas and end of year/season episode of the show, we welcome back polymath mixed martial artist and sports therapist Rosi Sexton. Recorded during the summer of 2024 it provides a useful record of how confirmation bias work and critical thinking is lacking in martial arts and greater society. Following our in depth discussion, I talk about the continuing issues regarding manufactured outrage, including the supposed "War on Christmas", as well as reflections on some of this year's major Boxing bouts. All of this plus a reflection on CCMA's extremely busy year. Send us a Text Message.Lee Hasdell is often known as "The Godfather of UK MMA" and for good reason. He discovered the burgeoning new limited rules fighting scene in Japan before the first UFC shook the martial arts world to its foundations. Already a successful nak muay and kickboxer who had fought internationally under some of the biggest pioneers of the sport and earning several titles at the time, he switched to MMA and began promoting the first incarnations of this new sport in the 1990s. He quickly became a controversial and revered figure. However, Lee's scope stretches far further than competing in, teaching and promoting professional combat sports. He has a deep respect for traditional martial arts, was one of the original reality revolutionaries on the self-protection circuit and a sophisticated cross-trainer who gathers insight from a range of disciplines outside of combative systems. On this episode Lee shares his insights into Combudo, an organisation and approach to martial arts, combat sports and self-protection he founded in 2000. Unified Fighting Systems founder, AG Martial Arts Centre owner, therapist and author, Andy Gibney returns to the show asking the question: "Is Bruce Lee still relevant?" Bruce Lee is an undeniable icon - at least for the Baby Boomer and Generation X age groups. However, what is his position and influence today? How important is a discussion about him in the martial arts world or even in his own legacy of Jeet Kune Do? Being a master instructor under original Bruce Lee student, Richard Bustillo, Andy provides an insightful and honest view on these subjects (along with several others). Originally published as a vlog in 2021, this episode lays down my philosophical outlook on combative disciplines. I essentially see them to be three tribes that overlap far more than some would like to admit. Dr Rosi Sexton is a Mixed Martial Arts polymath. A grade 8 level pianist and grade 7 level cellist who performed at the Royal Albert Hall when she was just 17, she achieved a first at Trinity College Cambridge, a MsC and PhD at Manchester in Mathematics and Computer Science, but left it all behind to pursue a career in Octagon. Already possessing black belts in Taekwondo and traditional Jujutsu, she took up Mixed Martial Arts and became first British woman to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. She retired from professional fighting having won two titles in two different divisions in Cage Warriors and BodogFight, and gainer her black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Today, in addition to becoming an excellent climber, Rosi continues to teach martial arts and self-protection, but her main career is sports therapy and osteopathy. Chapter IV - Escaping the Vultures We pick up on our series dedicated to self-protection as it relates to opportunistic predators. After a brief look at the unfair reputation real vultures receive, we return to the serial killers mentioned in the first chapter. The episode touches upon some real-life examples of Gavin De Becker's survival signals, the double tap, an asymmetrical assault changing to symmetrical with the de-escalation fallout, tactical escape and a broader view of long-term self-protection - why empathy is important to protect the ones we love from society's scavenging predators. Mo Teague is a teacher with a tremendous CV in both real-world application (military, professional and civilian) and martial arts training. His life has long been one of discovery, exploration and reality checks. It has also involved a lot of conflict. Much has been said and discussed about his external conflicts. However, on this episode we touch upon internal divisions through the concept of identity. Mo discusses how identities imposed upon us directly affect our choices and how we might craft our own identities in a positive way, laying the foundation on values and beliefs. As we pick back up on our "The Way of the Vulture" series focusing on opportunistic crimes and criminals, and the self-protection lessons we can take from them, we look at Opportunity Theory. Unified Fighting Systems founder, AG Martial Arts Centre owner, therapist and author, Andy Gibney joins the show for a look back at a childhood favourite. Taking the "Everything is Martial Arts" concept in an interesting direction, we look at the gentle world of A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh and discuss its influence and connections to martial arts. Far from living up to the moniker "a bear with very little brain", Pooh might be a childhood gateway to critical thinking. Whereas owl presents us with the model of the flawed teacher. With fear being such an important area of understanding in self-protection, Piglet provides a certain perspective. Meanwhile Tigger and Eeyore provide us with opposite extremes of emotion whilst also potentially showing the benefits of enthusiasm and stoicism. There's a lot to unpack! I may have missed the New Year date in line with the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese Zodiac's calendar begins on 22nd January. It's the Year of the Rabbit and so I took the opportunity to run my two Way of the Rabbit shows from way back in season 2 as bumper edition. The content still stands up but I apologise for the sound quality, which I have only been able to slightly improve. So that just leaves me to say in my best possible Mandarin (please forgive me) Xīnnián hǎo and in Cantonese, as it was said in my school which had a lot of Hong Kong nationals, Gong hei fat choy. Have a happy vigilant, witty, quick-minded and ingenious year of the Rabbit. Christmas takes us full circle as we continue with the Jersey Joe Walcott story. We pick up with the build up to Jersey Joe's third attempt at the world heavyweight title. The National Boxing Association declares the position vacant with its former holder, Joe Louis, promoting a fight to determine the new champion. Jersey Joe takes on the "Cincinnati Cobra" Ezzard Charles. Along the way we look at the history of the left hook, boxing's great surprise attack forged through the gloved era and an apt metaphor for life. We also take a brief look at Two-Ton Tony Galento, one of the sport's most colourful figures, as he checks out the two new prospects. Going further back, we recount the uncanny tale of when Jersey Joe met the original Joe Walcott and look at his story as one of history's greatest welterweights. We return to the first half of the 20th century and our saga of an unsung boxing hero. After winning the respect of the world but not the championship, Jersey Joe Walcott and the longest reigning world heavyweight king, Joe Louis, know they must face one another again. Meanwhile a new devastating force rises through the weight divisions. We chart the rise of Ezzard Charles, "The Cincinnati Cobra", considered by many to be the greatest light heavyweight of all time and reluctant new contender for boxing's most prestigious crown. Sub-plots include the boxing style of Archie "The Mongoose" Moore, the courage of Freddie Mills, "Murderers' Row" and Gus Lesnevich.Shownotes/Links: Clubb Chimera Martial Arts Facebook GroupClubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb BooksFinding the Truth - Ben MyersTribute to the Man Who Didn't Quit Jersey Joe Walcott: A Boxing BiographyBoxing Biographies: Jersey Joe WalcottClose Encounters with the Gloves OffThe RingEast Side BoxingWho in the World is Arnold Cream? Enjoy! In this special edition of the Clubb Chimera Martial Arts podcast, we re-visit Halloween 1828 and the climax of a series of cold-blooded murders. The 73rd or 70th episode (depending on your perspective) is the most unashamedly self-indulgent yet. I tie in religious texts, mythology, punk rock, Ernest Hemingway, Plato, Elvis, Don Quixote, Shakespeare, Idi Amin, Georgette Heyer, Henry V and many other disparate concepts and people into the story of martial arts. The concluding part of my discussion with Lawrence Kane on the seminal book on martial arts subculture he authored with previous podcast guest, Kris Wilder. This episode we look more into the reasoning behind the questionnaire order that was used to collect data for this book on martial artists. Both Lawrence and I were surprised by much of the data was provided, demonstrating the real personalities behind individuals who stick with martial arts training.
