Join the email list now: combatlearning.com/newsletter --- Today I'm joined again by one of my best friends, Master Thomas Huskey, a 4th dan in taekwondo and a fairly accomplished Olympic TKD coach in his own right. In this episode, Thomas and I begin by explaining in detail why martial artists outside of taekwondo are wrong in their criticisms of it. Then we transition our ire inward towards the taekwondo community itself, and why it is also wrong about its own criticisms of the Olympic style. Please be forewarned, this was immediately following a lot of drama after the summer Olympics last year (2021). Our tone is generally very condescending and bombastic, but we don't mean to upset people who have made these criticisms before. In reality, our tone was in direct response to a few individuals who decided they were going to be obnoxious and unfair in how they responded to some significant victories for Team USA in the Olympics at that time. So full disclosure, we were agitated. Joining Laura on the podcast today is Olympic Taekwondo athlete, Victoria Stambaugh. The daughter of a professional boxer, Victoria took to Taekwondo at an early age, made the US National Team in her teens, eventually joined the Puerto Rico National Team, and has since qualified to compete for Puerto Rico at the upcoming Tokyo Games. Having suffered a number of injuries and resulting surgeries over her career, Victoria has demonstrated remarkable resilience, and, through her faith in Christ, has persevered to achieve her dream of becoming an Olympian. In today’s conversation, she not only shares her inspirational story, but also turns the tables to pick Laura’s brain for some of her sage advice as well.   As with all guests, Victoria begins by sharing how she found her way to her chosen sport, and then she goes on to relate the story of her career to date. Starting with how she made the US National Team, Victoria proceeds to recount her battles with injuries over the years, how they have affected both her career and her emotional state, her transition to the Puerto Rico National Team, and how qualifying for the Olympics works in her sport. She also delves deeply into the role that her faith has played in her life and career, the impact of handing control over to God, her 17 scars and what they mean to her, and her work with Master Bang in preparing for Tokyo. Victoria concludes the episode by questioning Laura on her Olympic experiences and advice, and the role that her faith has played in her life and career. As you will hear, Victoria and Laura are very much kindred spirits whose personal, professional, and spiritual lives resonate considerably with each other, and also offer valuable lessons for all listeners here today. Episode Highlights:   Victoria’s sports history and how she got into Taekwondo Making the US National Team How Taekwondo athletes are selected for the Olympics Her knee injuries and surgeries How Victoria’s faith has helped her Her story of not qualifying for Rio and focusing on Tokyo The times when God spoke directly to her heart Transitioning from the US to the Puerto Rican Team How Olympic qualifying works for Taekwondo and diving Her knee injuries and surgeries while preparing for Tokyo Handing control over to God Qualifying for Tokyo Her 17 scars and what they mean to her Master Bang Victoria and her fiance’s Taekwondo and Parkour studio Laura’s best advice for someone competing at their first Olympics What’s different for Laura now Laura’s thoughts during the finals for her gold How Laura’s faith has helped her throughout her career Laura’s biggest goal when competing at the Olympics Her upcoming trials Laura’s thoughts on not being able to have family at the Tokyo Olympics Quotes:    “When I saw Jackie Chan, Jet Li, I was like, ‘I want to be these guys’.” “For the Olympics, only two weight categories can qualify, female and male, per country.” “Deep down inside, I knew that my knee was never the same.” “I know God put the right person at the right time that I needed to hear those words, ‘not to quit’ and to ‘come back’.” “That started the process of three knee surgeries within a period of six months.” “What I picture is kind of like God just wrapping His arms around me and giving me a hug. And at that moment, I was able to continue on and it was actually just the very next day where I was like, ‘Okay, I'm going to go for Tokyo’.” “He had to take out the rest of the meniscus…in my mind, I was like, ‘You just took my whole career away from me’.” “And then, sure enough, God always sends the right message, the right person, at the right time.” “God has seen your tears and, and He's with you. Don't give up, keep going.” “I was done emotionally, mentally, you know, physically, spiritually. I was just drained. And that's when I just released total control to Christ and let him handle it.” “Christ was my confidence…and I qualified for the Olympics.” “A reminder of everything I've been through and everything God has brought me out of. And what better reminder, really? It's basically tattooed on my body.” “People get so lost in the aura and the bigness and the pressure of the Olympic Games. But, just, you’ve got to be able to let that go.” “That's for Him to use this for my good and for His glory.” “You don't have to have the lead if you have the heart to come from behind.” “I've had a lot of big dreams that I've fallen very short of, but, in that moment, I was living it. And to me that was one of the greatest things that I got to take away.” “Now I do want to boast about my weaknesses, because that's the chance for the power of Christ to rest upon me, and for the world to see, you know, exactly what He can do.” “The biggest thing that I need to do is stay in the moment.” “Maybe I can just really spend that time dependent with God.” “You've got to kind of expect the unexpected, and just roll with it.” Links: The Pursuit of Gold homepage 5 Smart Strategies to Confidence Conquer Your Fear in 5 Days                   Laura’s Social Media: Laura's Instagram Laura's Facebook page   Victoria's Instagram Victoria's Facebook Victoria's Homepage

Will the Tokyo Olympics Ever Happen? The 2020 Tokyo Olympics was one of the many casualties of the Worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. Only three (3) prior times in the modern history of the Summer Games have the Olympics been cancelled. In early 2020 the IOC decided to delay the start of the games due to the worldwide medical crisis. Now as the year 2021 approaches, and the world is still in the grips of dealing with the impact of the pandemic, will the games be further delayed, or even cancelled? Will the worldwide Taekwondo athletes that have been training so hard be deprived of their shot at Olympic glory? If the games take place, what impact will the interruption of sparring training have on their performance? What protocols will need to be in place to keep athletes and spectators safe if the games do take place? These questions are explored by Taekwondo Life Magazine's host, Marc Zirogiannis, in this look at the modern history of the games.Support the show (https://squareup.com/store/tae-kwon-do-life-magazine/item/podcast-support-donation)

To succeed at an elite level in sports requires a high level of specialization. Small details are determinant.Being successful in one sport and moving to another can be very risky. You can go from being the best to just be one more. Our today's guest has experienced great success in two different martial arts.He has been twice Kickboxing world champion and has been twice world medalist in Taekwondo. Silver in Chelyabinsk 2015 and Bronze in Muju 2017I'm talking about Damon Sansum.Damon was recruited to the GB Taekwondo team as part of the Fighting Chance program, which scout athletes from other martial arts to compete at taekwondo. He had the skill and mindset necessary to adapt to a new style of competition. He kindly talked with us about how he made it, how he had dedicated his life to martial arts and how he after his retirement is still contributing to the martial arts world adding high level technology to it.Damon works with Kick.ai, a Finish company that is incorporating data driven technology to martial arts training. Damon shared with us all the exciting things he is doing with this martial arts startup.I highly recommend this interview. Damon has a great passion for martial arts, technology and self improvement. Please enjoy. How to win confidence if you are scared of competitions?Damon started to train martial arts with his father, a martial arts expert who for many years was a bodyguard of Mohamed Al Fayed's family. He started to compete in small competitions of KickBoxing and Karate point fighting. You could think that being Damon Sansum, he always had the confidence to fight and win.But it wasn't always this way. When he was around 15 he was scared of competitions and not performing as good as he did in the Club. Sometimes he even got sick before tournaments. His father even suggested that he take a break and to come back when he really wanted to compete. After that pause he started to compete again, in certain particular fight where he again didn't perform as good as he wanted he remembered thinking:“You know what, is not gonna kill you, is not the end of the world, you gonna have to fight anyway so go and fight and give it your all”.Two or three hours later he fought again and won all his fights that day and beat everyone who used to beat him. Later became a senior European KickBoxing champion at 16.That was when he started to be serious at training and competing.Fighting chanceAfter a very successful career in Kickboxing including being twice World Champion he was thinking of retirement because of a shoulder injury. He was not able to perform as good as he wanted. By that time the Fighting Chance program was launched. And he discussed with his father the idea of giving a try to Olympic Taekwondo as it was more focused on kicks than punches. So he could continue training and competing at a world class level. He applied for the tests. Participated in a 5 days camp fighting against all kinds of martial artists but with taekwondo rules.Damon proved he had the necessary talent to succeed in taekwondo, first in the camp and after it in competitions.Of course it was not easy. He had moments of doubt when he asked himself “What am i doing here?” but his efforts were compensated and soon he started to medal in important competitions.Martial arts, technology and Kick.aiOn October 2019, Damon decided to retire from taekwondo competition.Damon shared with us that he knew that he was very interested in martial arts and technology as he knows is how the world works now.We are like part robots having our phones all the time in our hands. After his retirement Damon wanted to do something that could mix technology and martial arts. The day after his retirement he had a message from Jan-Eric Wargelin from Kick.ai. A Finish Tech start up developing data driven technology for the world of taekwondo and martial arts.Damon flew to Finland, met the Kick.ai team, tested the technology and realized how good and accurate it was.Now he works with Kick.ai contributing with his experience and knowledge of martial arts and taekwondo to the development of Kick.ai Technology.By the way, Kick.ai is launching the new Club Pro and is offering a 1 on 1 demo to selected martial arts club owners. If you want to know how Kick.ai can help you with engagement and retention please contact Damon or me to arrange it.Please enjoy the interview with this amazing guy. He also shared with us some stories he has accumulated through his martial arts journey.

I'm very glad of being able to bring you this new Taekwondo Passion episode. The main purpose from the start of the podcast was to bring you inspiration interviewing outstanding human beings involved in taekwondo. And this interview can not be described in another way.Victoria Stambaugh's taekwondo journey has been amazing. She qualified for the Tokyo Olympics last March, after a long career pursuing the Olympic dream. To achieve that Victoria has had to overcome countless injuries and 6 knee surgeries. Victoria recently opened Believe Commit Achieve, an amazing Taekwondo and Parkour facility in The Woodlands, where people can learn the important qualities of discipline, self-control, mental toughness, and perseverance while gaining physical knowledge of movement mastery through Taekwondo and Parkour.Victoria is compromised with the taekwondo community and with sharing her experience hoping to inspire others. She conducts 1-on-1 and group training sessions, leads seminars and gives motivational speeches. She kindly talked with us about her career, what she has done to overcome injuries and surgeries, how she modified her approach to training prioritizing mental training, the importance of surrendering to the outcome, and how she'd like to see taekwondo competition after the lockdown.Combat sports family tradition.Victoria's father and grandfather were professional boxers. So, as she grew up she learned basic aspects of boxing that later helped her in taekwondo, like footwork and head moves. But Victoria's family didn't want her to participate in a sport as violent as boxing. So, first she started Karate and then looking for a place where she can be more competitive started in Olympic Taekwondo.Victoria had a multisport youth, as is common in successful athletes. She played soccer, basketball and track. She decided to specialize in taekwondo when she realized that she could make big things there. How to overcome injuries.Victoria's career has been constantly marked by injuries, so her will and spirit have been constantly challenged. Is not easy to overcome one knee surgery, imagine how hard it has been to do it with six.Her first big injury was when she was just before her first World Championships, in Copenhague. She hadn't the obligation to compete injured, but she felt a big compromise to do it.And even that she could barely walk she managed to have a very even match. After that World Championships she had an Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction in 2010. After it meniscus and ACL reconstruction in 2012, two reconstruction ACL surgeries in 2013, and two meniscectomies in 2018 and 2019. While she was asleep on her last surgery, after the Lima 2019 Pan Am Games, the doctor realized that Victoria's knee was worse than what he expected. Talked with her parents and together decided to do what was the best for her. That resulted in taking out a big part of the meniscus, leaving her knee with only 20 to 30 percent of it. When she woke up after surgery, and she was told the outcome she couldn't believe it.She thought that all of her abilities had been taken from her.Victoria thought it would be impossible to make it to the Olympics in that way. But she did it. How? She shared it with us in the most beautiful part of the interview.Surrender the outcomeVictoria thought that she was done, thinking of competing again sounded crazy for her, she doubted that she could ever be an athletic person. The only reason why she continued was that she surrendered to Christ and prayed. She said “If this is gonna happen, it's gonna be because of you. I'm mentally and physically exhausted, I can go on anymore unless you open the doors for me”.So, for her, the most important thing was letting go of any control. Releasing every thought of control and releasing everything to God.Releasing control in training, visualization and Olympic qualifiers.Victoria even stopped training for a while, and when she got back she didn't train like before. Two or three trainings per day five or six times a week.Training a lot is also a way of trying to control the outcome. So, she stopped doing it. Just trained once a day, three days of the week for taekwondo and two days for weight and physical training. The rest of the time she dedicated to strengthen her will, her mental toughness and to prepare mentally for her fights.Every day she was studying her rivals, watching videos of other fighters to come up with ideas, visualizing. That was the difference for her, to surrender the outcome.BCAAlong with her boyfriend and his best friend. Victoria had the dream of a place where they can contribute to the community helping people to build skills like discipline but also physical skills. The only obstacle was that she was 100% focused on the Olympics. During the lockdown with the Olympics postponed they decided that was the moment. So in Summer 2020 they opened “Believe Commit Achieve” academy. A training facility in The Woodlands where people can learn Taekwondo and Parkour, to gain abilities to control their bodies and minds. If you live in The Woodlands area and want to train with experts. You have a world class option on BCA.Thanks for reading. Links to the full interview below. Born in January of 1980, Chris first began his journey in the Martial Arts aged 8. Inspired, as many were at the time, by the movie 'The Karate Kid', Chris joined the local Taekwondo school in his home town of Balby in Doncaster. He enjoyed the high energy kicking style associated with Olympic Taekwondo, although unfortunately the school had to close forcing Chris to look at other options to continue his training. In the mid to late 90's Chris switchted to the ITF style of Taekwondo. Around the same time he discovered the work of Jackie Chan, quickly amassing a large collection of VHS tapes, Chris would spend hours trying to emulate the moves of his new found hero. He began recording his training and sharing the footage online via Martial Arts based internet forums. It was there that UK director and producer Steve Lawson first spotted Chris and offered him his first job in 2000 on a short film shot for a TV show.   The following year, Chris was invited to perform as part of the 'Rising Dragon' Martial Arts team at the Royal Variety Performance. To perform for the Queen was a huge honour! Following on from this, Chris worked many  UK productions such as 'Left 4 Dead', Insiders', 'The Purifiers' and 'Displaced' before landing his first job as Fight Choreographer on 2005 release 'Soul Searcher' Shortly after completing work on Soul Searcher, Chris was asked to Choreograph a fight scene on the award winning 'Love Struck' as well as playing a small acting role in the movie 'The Silencer'. This gave Chris the opportunity to work with talented fight peformers and actors such as Joey Ansah, Christian Howard & Glen Salvage. He also gained valuable set time working with a vastly experienced crew and production team. Around the same time, Chris gained experience working on live TV as well as appearing on the popular BBC TV show 'Prank Patrol', he also travelled to Norway to act as Fight Choreographer on the live action adaptation of comicbook 'Smasher'. Earlier, in mid 2004, Chris gained experience working on the SONY PSP release 'Pursuit Force' as well as working on the Five TV series 'Combat Club' before returning to film Screen Fighting a year or two later in the UK production 'Underground'. In the late 2000's Chris worked in China on 'Blood: The Last Vampire', the UK TV series 'Star Hyke' as well as the movies 'Ten Dead men' and 'Bodyguard: A new beginning'. In 2009, Chris decided to take time away to spend time with his family and develop his Martial Arts Academy. 2013 saw a return to action as Fight Choreographer on the multiple award winning 'DOG' as well as working most recently as a screen fighter and choreographer on the films 'Vengeance', 'Wendy' and 'Essex Heist'. He primarily competed in track and Olympic Taekwondo, winning multiple State Titles and in 1989 won the Junior Olympics for his division and fought in the first ever Jr. World Taekwondo Championships. This earned him a chance to train in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center and his performance led many to believe he was a solid hopeful for the 1992 Olympic Games. However, in 1991 he was also the first person from his hometown to earn an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, which he accepted. Although the decision sidetracked any Olympic dream, he was focused on becoming the best combat leader he could be and after a year at the Naval Academy Prep School, he entered Annapolis and graduated with the Class of 1996. During his time at the Academy, he continued to push his limits in athletics and martial arts, and became focused on becoming a Navy SEAL Officer. Out of a class of almost 900 graduates, only 16 slots were available for SEAL training and despite making the cut from 200 initial candidates to a final 33, the competition was tight and he didn't get a slot, forcing him to temporarily pursue another path. For the next 5 years he served as a Bridge Officer on warships, persevering until finally earning a spot with BUD/S Class 239 and served as their Class Leader. After training, an injury led to cutting his career in Naval Special Warfare short and so based on a recommendation from a good friend at SEAL Team 5, he chose to tryout with Blackwater and began deploying with them for the next few years. Despite loving the work with BW he decided to apply to become a Special Agent with the FBI and was recruited by them in 2007. After the FBI Academy, he was assigned to a Counterterrorism Unit and also served on the Violent Crime/Major Offenses (VCMO) Squad on the border of Mexico. A few years later Lance decided to move on and opened Hawkstorm Academy, a small but elite MMA gym in southern Illinois. However, behind the scenes he had been developing an idea for a company that would be like Blackwater, only better...what has now become Hawkstorm Global.  Also during those years he wrote two books; one, a Science Fiction novel and the other a combat history of the U.S. Navy SEALs. Now as the Founder and CEO of Hawkstorm Global, he and his team is beginning to make waves in the Private Military arena worldwide." Today, Wade Pitts interviews James Hidalgo — owner of Infinite TKD, a Martial Arts studio based in the Marina District in San Francisco. James has been training Martial Arts for over 20 years, has competed on a professional level, and started his own school here, just 8 short years ago.   James got into Martial Arts fairly simply; he was nine years old and his sister was putting her kids into Martial Arts and had asked if he wanted to try it out as well. After a couple of weeks, his sister's kids quit, but he stayed — and never stopped going. Since then, James has trained in Boxing, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Olympic Taekwondo, Wrestling, and Muay Thai. At one point he also joined the Marine Corps and joined a school while serving as a Marine and trained for the duration of his career there. After the Marine Corps, he decided to officially pursue the sport and moved to San Francisco where he was taken under the wing of Herb Perez, the 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist, who showed him the ‘Martial Arts way.' He took a lot of inspiration from Herb and to this day, tries to model the way he trains and teaches from him. Currently, he is trying to earn his black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, though his passion still lies with Olympic Taekwondo.   In this episode, Wade and James talk about James's history in the Martial Arts, how he opened his studio, how he currently runs his studio, as well as outline some of the children and adult programs. James Hidalgo also talks about his current expansion — the next big step for him and his Martial Arts studio — an exclusive that he discusses for the first time on this show. James also has a profound answer for how martial arts has affected his personal and professional life that you're going to want to stick around for.   Key Takeaways: [1:35] Wade welcomes James Hidalgo to the podcast and James tells us about his background in the Martial Arts. Olympians from all over the world are competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and American athletes, who come from just about every state, will also be “going for the Gold.” However, with these games, the state of Texas has something (else) to brag about. Every member of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Taekwando team hails from the Lone Star state. More on this team, later. Dr. Rajesh Arakal (http://texasback.com/doctors-profiles/doctor-arakal/), a spine surgeon at Texas Back Institute (http://texasback.com/about-us/), is also an enthusiastic martial arts practitioner. In a recent interview, he explained the difference between taekwando (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taekwondo) and other martial arts. “When I was in medical school, there was a dojo where a lot of us medical students, residents and doctors would attend,” he said. “We would meet twice a week for three to four hours, training for taekwondo and mixed martial arts. It was my first opportunity to be exposed to taekwondo and I truly appreciate the art form. “Historically, taekwondo originated in Korea,” Dr. Arakal noted. “It incorporated the countryside tools of the native farmers as a protection against invaders from Japan. As for karate, this originally came from Japan. “In many ways, taekwondo is a ‘circular’ sport. It’s a lot about balance. Because Koreans were somewhat smaller than say the Japanese, they required moves that would increase their reach. It became a sport that emphasized kicking – specifically round-kicks – so that the athlete could have a great arch of penetration when fighting an opponent. It negated the shorter stature of the people who were practicing.” See the full article at www.texasback.com/blog
