Educated ears in the summer of 1957 were still trying to decide if this new rock 'n' roll thing was really music's future or was just a passing fancy. Two summers had passed by then since the new sound burst upon the American scene. The ear-opening “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley & His Comets was quickly followed by Chuck Berry's “Maybellene” and Little Richard's “”Tutti Frutti.”The following summer the rock kept rolling, when The King arrived. This new kid, Elvis Presley, topped the charts for weeks on end with “Heartbreak Hotel,” with “Hound Dog,” with “Don't Be Cruel.”But by 1957, the cigar-chomping bigwigs in the record company boardrooms still weren't sure. Not sure sure, you understand. The Summer DoldrumsAfter all, traditional pop crooners seemed to be staging a comeback. Perry Como (of all people!) hit No. 1 with “Round and Round.” Pat Boone scored with the languid “Love Letters in the Sand.” Debby Reynolds had a hit with “Tammy.” Holy schlock, Batman, even Elvis seemed to be getting goo-goo eyed all of a sudden with “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear.”So, the question in ‘57: where were summertime's rebels? That year the cool kids had already packed up their beach towel and gone on back to school by the time rock's Next Big Wave hit:— Sept. 9, 1957, Buddy Holly and The Cricket, “That'll Be the Day.”— Oct. 11, 1957, Everly Brothers, “Wake Up Little Susie.”— Oct. 21, 1957, Elvis, “Jailhouse Rock.”— Dec. 21, 1957, Danny and the Juniors, “At the Hop.”But even before that fall, diehards could dig a little deeper in the radio playlist for up-and-coming rockers. Jerry Lee Lewis was howling away with “A Whole Lot of Shakin'.” Fats Domino was still down there somewhere with “I'm Walkin'.” Jackie Wilson was right on deck with “Reet Petite.”About This Week's SongAnd languishing even further down on the summer music charts — oh, somewhere around No. 24 or so — was the subject of this week's podcast. It's The Flood's favorite souvenir from the Summer of ‘57: The Coasters' wonderful “(When She Wants Good Lovin') My Baby Comes to Me.”As reported here earlier, this winking and nodding Jerry Leiber-Mike Stoller composition was a minor hit for The Coasters. It did resurrect nine years later when a little known group called The Chicago Loop took it for a spin and got to No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. But in the Floodisphere, we much prefer a different pressing of the song released one year earlier. Favorite folksinger Tom Rush's 1965 self-titled debut Elektra album included a version of the tune accompanied by bassist Bill Lee along with John Sebastian (of The Lovin' Spoonful) and Fritz Richmond (of The Jim Kweskin Jug Band.)This track, captured at last week's rehearsal, features the arrangement we're working up to include on the new album when we start recording in the weeks ahead. Dust off your blue suede shoes and buckle up your rhinestone jumpsuit—this week, we're diving hip-first into the swirling toilet bowl of conspiracy surrounding The King himself. Did Elvis really die on the throne in 1977, or was it all a cover-up to escape fame, debt, or the mafia? From sightings at a Burger King in Michigan to wild claims of government witness protection, we're peeling back the velvet curtain to reveal the bizarre theories that suggest Elvis Presley never left the building.

We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2016 conversation with Mike Stoller. ABOUT MIKE STOLLERMike Stoller has written more than 60 songs that have appeared on the Billboard charts, including the #1 hits “Hound Dog,” “Kansas City,” “Yakety Yak,” “Searchin',” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Poison Ivy,” “Stand By Me,” “Young Blood,” “Don't,” and “Ruby, Baby." After Stoller and songwriting partner Jerry Leiber found early R&B success with recordings by Little Esther, Charles Brown, Ray Charles, and Big Mama Thornton, Elvis Presley turned their song "Hound Dog" into a #1 single on the pop, R&B, and country charts in 1956. Elvis went on to record more than 20 Leiber and Stoller titles, including the hits "Love Me," "Loving You," "Jailhouse Rock," "Treat Me Nice," "She's Not You," and "Bossa Nova Baby." Mike and Jerry signed an independent production deal with Atlantic Records in the mid-1950s, where they wrote and produced a series of hits for several artists, including the Drifters' "There Goes My Baby," "Dance With Me," and "On Broadway." Additionally, the pair wrote and produced all the Coasters' singles, including "Young Blood," "Searchin'," "Charlie Brown," "Along Came Jones," and "Poison Ivy." Other highlights from the Leiber and Stoller songbook include "Love Potion No. 9," which was a hit for both the Clovers and the Searchers, and "Is That All There Is," which was a hit for Peggy Lee. Eleven different versions of their song “Stand By Me” appeared on the Billboard charts over the span of 50 years, with the original version by Ben E. King hitting the Top 10 in both 1961 and 1986. Smokey Joe's Cafe, which included 40 Leiber and Stoller songs, opened in 1995 and became the longest running musical revue in Broadway history. Stoller received the prestigious ASCAP Founders Award in 1991, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and is a member of both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Send us a textA 15-year-old Elvis Tribute Artist that many feel is Elvis reincarnated but looks like Joaquin Phoenix! He is the only singer in his family. The attraction started in second grade after his best friend dared him to dress up as Elvis for Halloween, which began the love affair for the King of Rock n Roll. Aiden also sings Johnny Cash, Josh Turner and a couple others but Elvis is his niche. He says, Elvis is a friend of his that he never got to meet and since 2nd Grade he has been singing his songs that began with “Jailhouse Rock.” Aiden spends an hour every day practicing Elvis's music. He states he has watch every single video on YouTube that Elvis has watched to perfect his mannerisms and movement and some of these moves come natural to Aiden. He has jumpsuits made specifically for him along with the replica clothes and he completely embraces this vintage look and mentions; he was born in the wrong era!Being part of a big competition in Memphis in the Big “little” King Division, he will be performing in the Graceland tent very soon, but Aiden really wants to be the Ultimate Elvis and has been to Tupelo, MS many times and performed right outside the birthplace of Elvis! What is next? VEGAS? Steve Pennington is his vocal coach for over the past year and half, and one Aiden believes in him in which the results speak for themselves. Pennington is the one to credit for posting his videos and putting the naysayers at bay that believed Aiden was lip synching by posting an A Capella video. How is he handling all the notoriety from his VIRAL videos? He tells us what long term plans are, and he has a plan B too! What does a teenager away from being Elvis? He ends with a beautiful story of the impact he has had on others. On August 16, 1977, Elvis Presley – the groundbreaking performer whose voice, swagger, and style changed the face of American music – died at the age of 42. Presley's career was defined by explosive success, from his early rockabilly hits like Hound Dog and Jailhouse Rock, to sweeping ballads like Can't Help Falling in Love and It's Now or Never. With 18 No. 1 singles and over a billion records sold worldwide, he became not just the King of Rock and Roll, but a symbol of cultural transformation in postwar America. Yet his later years were marked by personal isolation and a growing dependence on prescription drugs, culminating in his untimely death at Graceland, his Memphis home. Still, his influence endures—through music, fashion, and film—and his legacy as one of the most electrifying and iconic figures of the 20th century remains unshakable. There's arguably no better time for falling down a cultural rabbit hole than the languid, transitory summer months. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss how the season allows us to foster a particular relationship with a work of art—whether it's the soundtrack to a summer fling or a book that helps make sense of a new locale. Listeners divulge the texts that have consumed them over the years, and the hosts share their own formative obsessions, recalling how Brandy's 1998 album, “Never Say Never,” defined a first experience at camp, and how a love of Jim Morrison's music resulted in a teen-age pilgrimage to see his grave in Paris. But how do we square our past obsessions with our tastes and identities today? “Whatever we quote, whatever we make reference to, on so many levels is who we are,” Cunningham says. “It seems, to me, so precious.”This episode originally aired on June 27, 2024. In this special tribute podcast, we count down Elvis Presley's top 5 hits, exploring the lasting impact of his legendary music. From the raw energy of “Jailhouse Rock” to the heartfelt “Can't Help Falling in Love,” each track represents his timeless influence on rock and roll. Join us as we revisit the King's greatest moments, diving into the stories behind the songs that made Elvis an icon.
Kevin Curtis was one half of a double Elvis tribute act, living in the Mississippi birthplace of the King. But after he stumbled onto what he thought was a black market organ harvesting scheme, Kevin went down a rabbit hole of conspiracy and on a quest to root out corruption. As his paranoia grew, threatening letters, sprinkled with deadly ricin, turned up at the offices of his enemies - as well as the White House. The Netflix documentary series The Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Saga tells the quirky tale of Kevin's colorful life and dark obsessions. With its many twists and turns, we hear from the story's cast of eccentric characters and follow the investigation into whether this Elvis impersonator hatched a plot sure to have him dancing to the Jailhouse Rock. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews directors Chapman and Maclain Way. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched The Kings of Tupelo yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.
Bec joins Justin for a look back at one of the few Elvis albums she had early in her fandom, the iconic 1959 release "A Date With Elvis." Released while Elvis was overseas in Germany during his military service, "A Date" in some respects serves as a companion piece to the earlier "For LP Fans Only," compiling a handful of tracks previously unavailable on the LP format, while also having a more intriguing and novel design: a gatefold that allowed you to hang the album over and count the days until Elvis' return, or even more photos and thoughts from "Elvis" inside! And how does this oddball collection of tracks from Sun Records, Jailhouse Rock, Love Me Tender and a random EP hold up as a listening experience? All that and more on this episode! Then, for Song of the Week, Bec gets in the holiday spirit with "Who Needs Money?" from "Clambake" and Justin doubles down, going deep on Elvis' 1971 version of the traditional 18th century Christmas hymn, "O Come All Ye Faithful."
