BIOS: Ray Crist is a world-renowned visionary who offers his teachings from a deep well of knowledge of indigenous wisdom. He has been an apprentice and an initiate of the Q'ero Nations elders since 2006 and ever since has shared the ways of living with thousands of spiritual seekers. Ray has traveled the world and has spent the last three decades immersed in shamanism, various styles of yoga, Chinese medicine, and martial arts. He has been offering workshops and trainings at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, NY Open Center, Yoga Journal, Blue Spirit, Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort, and other centers around the world. Ray's trainings focus on how to use shamanic tools and yoga as technologies that assist us to reach an optimal state of being to live a balanced, empowered, and extraordinary life. Ray was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2003 and was given 3 months to live. He left his home country of Greece and in 2005 had surgery at the National Institute of Health (NIH) where he gave up his right kidney. After that, he ventured in search of indigenous healers. To his surprise, the shamans he met told him that they couldn't heal him ... but that they could train him to become a shaman and heal himself. Ray went on to become an apprentice of three shamans from lineages as old as the Inca civilization and the Amazon jungle shamans. Spending time with the shamans and living with them, he received several initiations up to the top level of the Q'ero lineage. In the 12th year of his apprenticeship, Ray was initiated by his teacher, Don Sebastian Pauccar Flores as a Kuraq Akulleq. This title translates to “seer” or “visionary” and comes with a directive to share the Q'ero teachings with other nations as a planetary representative of the tribe's culture and medicine. This has become the mission of Ray's life, and he founded The Jaguar Path in 2007 as the home base for that work. Ray is honored to share these teachings that he holds so close to his heart. Ray bows to the unfathomable power of this work and the unlimited potential of each member of the ever-growing international Jaguar Path Tribe. Nina Crist has lived, breathed, studied, and taught the martial arts since the early age of 17, learning the essence of each these styles: Karate, Aikido, Jiu-Jitsu, Tai Chi, Chi Gung, Kung Fu, and others. She is a black belt with the title of Master and as a keeper of this ancient wisdom, she is honored to share the beautiful practices with all who are drawn to them. Her teaching is inspired by decades of traditional training and she makes these ancient practices accessible to all. It is Nina's life work to peel back the layers of dogma and fear that surround this ancient wisdom so that people from all walks and all stages of life can benefit. Nina grew up close to nature in Maine and was called from a young age to live a spiritual path in service of uplifting and developing others. She always knew that her life would focus on offering nourishment and support to those around her. At 17 she began training extensively in the martial arts, drawn to a deeply traditional, non-competitive, nature-based delivery of these ancient teachings in which discussion of the virtues and becoming your best self, was held side by side with the physical forms. Mark Johnson – Life as PlayAired Thursday, April 29, 2021, at 5:00 PM PST / 8:00 PM ESTIn my mid-thirties, something interesting happened. An inadvertent transformation took place when I started studying yoga to relieve a back issue. In the joy of this new learning and the friendships that ensued, a series of synchronicities blessed my life. Each new opportunity to engage and share this energy with others was healing on so many levels and reopened a sense of joy and wonder that I had put aside in my teens. My guest this week on Vox Novus, Mark Johnson, took a six-decade-long global spiritual journey, that culminated with his new book, and initiation into a Life of Play. Mark encourages us to take the plunge into the unknown and mystery of our lives where every action becomes an effortless, appropriate response to whatever life brings us. Attunement Therapy is a modern healing modality founded on some of the most ancient biological principles relevant to human physical and emotional health. Evolution has wired us to be physically connected with other people on a regular basis to maintain a healthy body, to de-stress and to heal. The birth of Attunement Therapy is the culmination of Tristan's 13 years of exploring his own findings as a regression therapist specializing in trauma recovery. He has been utilizing many healing modalities and tools as he holds space for his clients to explore their evolution and healing process. In the past few years, he has also been offering more and more sessions for counseling and coaching with particular emphasis on sexuality, relationships, and healthy lifestyle choices. Tristan's studies have been primarily in the areas of Psychotherapy, Meditation, Quantum Healing, Cell Biology, Epigenetics, Kinesiology, Psychopharmacology, Child Brain Development, Sexual Health, Diet, Detox, Philosophy, Metaphysics, Taoism, Shamanism, Entheogens, Chi Gung, Kung Fu and Modern Medical Science. Now, Tristan only offers Attunement Therapy because its efficient healing capacity bypasses cumbersome talking therapies and regression therapies. This is because it creates a unique situation where the unconscious of the client is put in control of the healing. Their body and mind automatically begin healing what issues require the most urgent attention. The body knows what it needs. To be successful I have always felt that you need to focus on three areas. You focus on strengthening your mind, you focus on keeping your body healthy, and you focus on your goals. Most of all, you focus.Focus has and always will be one of the areas I struggle with the most. It's ironic when people tell me that I seem extremely focused at work and in the things I do daily. The truth is that it doesn't come easy. I am focused but only because it's something that I work on every single day.One thing that I can absolutely not understate is that extreme focus is absolutely required in order for you to turn your dreams into a reality. Go back and read that sentence over and over until you truly understand the importance of focus. One reason in the past that I never moved closer to my goals is simple, I did not focus on exactly what I wanted. My first business as an entrepreneur was actually a staffing company which I ran out of my home office. I knew the foundation of building any home-based business was to provide a service and find a way to market effectively to my target customers and continually build my business. I signed one contract and all of a sudden I made it! I needed the advanced website, the dial by name phone system that made my company appear larger than it was (even though I was the only employee.) And of course, really cool looking business cards. All the while I lost sight of the fundamentals. In short, I lost focus.I ended up leaving that business behind for a promising opportunity, but looking back I could have done really well had I stayed focused on the plan.If you can learn anything from my shortcomings, it's that staying focused is one of the keys to creating your destiny. When I think focus, and how it pertains to your goals, I think of two things. First is long term focus. Your long term focus is what you want in life. This is your ideal scenario, the end goal. Your best-selling novel, rising to the top of an organization and becoming CEO, becoming the next LeBron, or becoming one of the best inspirational speakers in the world. If you are not focused on that thing, whatever it might be, on a daily basis, you are not moving closer to it.You need to be extremely clear on what you want, don't just say I want to be one of the best motivational speakers in the world, say I want to author a New York Times bestseller, say I want to stand on stage in front of 10,000 people and lift every single one of them up and say I want to travel the world to inspire millions of people to be the best versions of themselves. The goal is to become exactly clear on what you want. Now that you know exactly what you want, I want you to do two things, first write it down. Your goals are just thoughts in the wind if you do not write them down. When you write them, they become real. And read them aloud to yourself at least twice a day, when you get up and before you sleep.Next, I want you to go make a vision board. Take everything you just wrote down on paper and put it in pictures. I thought this was a silly exercise until I actually incorporated it into my own life. Now, look at this as many times a day as you can and imagine yourself there already. What does this do? If you follow these two steps that means you have written your goals, you have heard your goals out loud, you see them on paper in words and pictures, visualize them and you will feel them. The more you do this, the more you focus on your dreams, the more real they become. Cal Newport states in his book "Deep Work," “Who you are, what you think, feel, and do, what you love—is the sum of what you focus on.”Now that you have your goals firmly implanted in your mind, body and spirit, you need to go get them. You build a plan. If you are unsure how to build a plan, check out my episode "Sharpen Your Vision," you start with your end goal and work backward. This is where your short term focus is most crucial. Your short term focus is your ability to stay dedicated to one task and one task only. If you are writing that novel, then write that novel. If you are preparing a speech, then prepare your speech. You aren't texting your friends or checking your social media. You are focused on accomplishing the thing that is in front of you with razor-sharp precision. When you are working on your goal, nothing else exists.Your ability to focus and dominate the tasks in front of you will ultimately pull you miles past your competition. One of the tools that has helped me to focus, is meditation. I began my meditation practice about a decade ago. I wake up at 4:30am every morning and start with a breathing exercise and then I start meditating. I practice several forms of meditation, Chi Gung, mindfulness, an1`d visualization most notably. It starts my day on a positive note, it helps me put meaning into my work, it slows me down, but most of all, it helps me focus.I have learned so much in the last decade. I study the most successful people relentlessly trying to find a winning formula for success. If there is one thing among the winners of the world that I have found is that they have a damn strong mind. They have a determination that can bend the will of a perfect storm, and a razor-sharp focus that can split the entire world in two.An unbreakable focus can cut through everything that stands in your way, you don't see problems anymore, you don't see anything but your dream, your goal, your vision. Build your focus today and put these ideas into practice. What we think, we become. Never lose sight of what you want most in this world. Live it, breathe it, feel it, every single moment of your life, and one day, just one day. Your vision becomes real.Stay Inspired!-Raf
Fittingly for our 70th episode, this week we chat with Peter Annazone - US Marine, martial artist, and T'ai Ch'i / Systema Instructor - still teaching and practicing well into his 70s. Peter has been practicing martial arts for over 50 years, and Systema for the last 20. His quests for martial knowledge have taken him all over the world, and he has had the privilege of working with several genuine masters of T'ai Ch'i, Kungfu, and Systema. Here, we talk about: his experiences training T'ai Ch'i and Chigung in China meeting Vladimir, Mikhail, and the Merrell brothers the necessity of a relaxed approach - not just a relaxed body - in training how adherence to Systema basics confers health and healing for life
This is the first lesson in our Cobra Chi Gung course. This is an ancient fighting art which was thought to be lost. At least that's what the history books say. Fortunately, it was not lost. Just safely hidden away. The principles taught are the same principles taught in Shou' Shu' Cobra Kung Fu (Boli Yan Shi). However, in the Chi Gung course, there is less focus on application. Some understanding of application is necessary though, even if you are only interested in the health aspects. The motions used are the larger, more pronounced cobra motions. Like a snake slowly meandering through the grass on a sunny day. Yet these same motions, if tightened up, form the basis for the fast hitting fighting art of Shou' Shu' Cobra. The world of social media is here, it's pervasive and it is not going away; but how do we integrate with it in a healthy and sustainable manner? It's this questions that lead me to sitting down with Tristan Bray to explore some of the physiological effects that Instagram & Facebook have when in excess and some very interesting distinctions that can help us to stay centred in navigating this vast, polarising, deep, shallow, complex, silly and meaningful virtual world. Get ready to get some wake up calls around the nature of this virtual world and learn the dynamic ways that it is being used by people and organisations around the world. Social media often sits on a knifes edge between being medicine for the world or poison (like many herbs based on their dose), let's explore where that dynamic line exists. In the first of this 2-part episode, we delve right into: Anxiety in today's generation and the internal & external influences driving its presence The fight or flight 'maladaptive response syndrome' in the 21st Century How dopamine plays into addictions within the realms of modern technology Scientism and modern cultures quest for scientific validation Epigenetic changes in response to perceived stressors The concept of purposelessness The Nocebo Effect Sexuality, shame and the effects of internalised sexual emotion Tristan has been a Regression Therapist for ten years. CHI GUNG BASCICALLY MEANS SPIRIT/BREATH OR ENERGY WORK THAT IS SKILLED AND DEVELOPED OVER TIME.
What does TC Mean? Why is it spelt in different ways? Why is it sometimes referred to as Tai Chi and others as TCC? And why, even after explaining all this do most people say afterwards, I'm no more clearer than before? Literally it means the "supreme ultimate fist". Clear? Of course not...as as, this doesn't help at all..... so we need to take a look at something other than the literal meaning. And this is a good lesson generally in TC. Don't get hung up on literal meanings, for you are probably living in a culturally, politically, geographically and socially different time than when the art was conceived. In short we need to move beyond definitions. The two words, “Tai” and “Chi” together, mean the unity of Yin and Yang, or in Taoist circles: the mother of the 10,000 things. See! I told you that literal meanings would get us nowhere! The "10,000 things" is just a name - - a name used to represent everything from the lunar winds to the clippings of your toenails. It was a description used a lot in early Taoist texts, and although it's not necessary that you grasp all the philosophy of Taoism to learn about Tai Chi, it is useful to know some of the concepts, such as Yin and Yang and Wu Wei. We will look at some of these in more depth later. But for now just try to remember that when these concepts are brought together, “Tai” and “Chi” they mean the ideas and not just the physical movements. So, when you add the third ingredient “chuan” to the first two, you get the complete name and the complete concept: T’ai Chi Chuan - The system of fighting based on the principles of the mother of all things. There, clear now? Okay, i hear you ask....so What's with the accents? Why is it sometimes written with accents after the T and the CH. ? Well I could answer: Pedantry. I could say...Who cares what the difference is, the important thing is what they are in themselves, not how they are written! And this would be a fair point of view. But, we do need to be aware of the arguments, even if we are then going to go ahead and pooh pooh them. Tai Chi is often written with an apostrophe between the T’ and the ai. Technically, this is the correct spelling - otherwise the pronunciation changes from a T sound to that of a D sound. Can you imagine calling it Dai Chi? However, popular use dictates we ignore the rule, much to the frustration of linguists, purists and fantatical forum activists on the net. You seee, Languages, one has to admit, adapt and change and in this case the simple spelling of Tai Chi - without apostrophe - to denote the practice is used as a standard. Even many teachers who claim to only use the apostrophe spelling end up using the simple version when it comes to selling a book or an article. As so often is the case, markets dictate, and individuals follow suit. Which brings us to the question of why its called TC sometimes and TCC other times. Well, the word ‘Chuan’ at the end of Tai Chi means fist and so the whole phrase ‘Tai Chi Chuan' technically refers to the practice of Tai Chi as a martial art. Therefore, some teachers have singled out the shorter phrase Tai Chi to mean the non-martial practice of Tai Chi Chuan. But not all subscribe to this view. Confused? you should be because a lot of the time I believe that is the intention. The more confused u are, the more readily you will swallow anyones theory no matter how absurd it sounds. Hmmm, i think im digging my own grave here.... Fortunately, we have the venerable discipline of Bean Curd Boxing to clarify matters. Bcb's use whatever rolls off the tongue better, whatever is quicker to type and whatever avoids the use of tricky accents. Having said all of this...you still may see TC written as Tai Ji Quan and may wonder - with some justification - if this is a distant relative First, Don't worry too much because it is still pronounced the same. What we are touching on here is the same problem practitioners of Chinese arts have had to deal with for decades...whether we are looking at Chi Gung or Qi Gong, Kung Fu or Gung Fu, and of course Tai Chi or Taiji. It all depends on which transliteration of the original Chinese you are reading. Some systems favour the Tai Chi Chuan approach (Wade-Giles) whilst others favour the Taijiquan version (Pinyin). Followers of each argue about the merits of one over another, to the absurd point of throwing threats and challenges about on forums to try and win the point. but perhaps we ought to remind themselves that the only correct version is that which is written in its original tongue. All other versions are simply translations. If u visit my blog you will see the words Tai Chi liberally scattered here and there without too much caution. This is because I do not really want to spend an inordinate amount of time arguing about the order of the letters, or the presence of an accent. (Something we have already spent far too much time on already) I'd rather focus on the concepts and ideas behind them. Strip away the unnecessary. As a lover of language I want to see things simplified, not confused. Ron hogans excellent rewording of the Tao te jing 48. Usually, we try to learn something new every day. But if we want to get right with Tao, we have to let go of something every day. We do less and less, until we end up doing nothing. And it's when we do nothing that we get the job done And that's where I want to finish today. Reminding ourselves that the objective of doing less, yet getting stuff done is a fine practice amongst bean curd boxers envy where. So, if after all that you still wish to engage in debate, then go ahead and choose your weapon ....With or without, plain or accented, old or new,...... just remember ..scratch the surface, remove the fine robes and you'll find we're all pretty much the same underneath.
Welcome to this weeks episode where we ask the simple, but surprisingly complex question... Q2. What happens in a Tai Chi Class? A. Well, The short answer is that in a class of Tai Chi, you learn tai chi. The content of that learning experience however can vary from school to school, from teacher to teacher so much, that books and web sites and DVD's recommending one version over another, one style over another don't help an awful deal. What really helps is not how much you know about tai chi, but how much you know about yourself Let me explain that a little. What one person sees as soft, another sees as hard. What one sees as slow, another sees as fast. My dog can run pretty fast. But put against a greyhound and he looks like a tortoise. We think of a tortoise as a slow mover, but put one against a snail and youve got one speedy shelled creature - and so it goes on. I have been to beginners classes that have had an inordinately complex structure. (for me) but for the teacher they have epitomized simplicity itself. I have been to advanced classes Where we have done little else that practice the first 2 minutes of the short form. Nothing is set. Everything is fluid. There is no such thing as absolutes or certainties. You have to learn to take it as you find it. For that reason it's always best to go and view a class before enrolling, signing-up or committing yourself to a life-long apprenticeship with the loudest school with the biggest advertising budget. Find out where your nearest classes because - geography is always going to be a big issue - and go and visit each one. Introduce yourself, say you are there to just to watch (or join in if invited) and just see what you think and how you feel. So what are you looking for? Well, get your note book and and scribble down a couple of points..... Listen on for the whole podcast or visit teapotmonk.com for more taoist nonense...
Hi welcome to Talking Tai Chi with the teapotmonk. Today we begin out journey and start our exploration of what is Tai Chi. But instead of defining it - a rather meaningless task given the enormous cultural and linguistic issues involved, I'm going to begin with a question that is not only fundamental to all beginners of the art, but of equal importance to teachers, intermediate students and everyone seeking to improve their practice. WHY LEARN TAI CHI? A. Perhaps this is the question that begins our journey, but it is also the question to which we return again and again. Why learn, why practice for decades and why invest so much time and energy into this most noble of arts? Clearly, the answer will vary from person to person, but as a teacher im aware that a greater and greater number of students cite "health" as their primary motive. At times, health is referred to in physical terms, others mentally, spiritually, philosophically or even culturally. It is a complex picture, but throughout these podcasts we shall be looking into all of these interpretations. but first let us step back from the specifics. Tennyson said that Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers." and Too often in Tai Chi we get embroiled in Details of knowledge, arguing over interpretation and authenticity. I'm going to do my best to avoid this tendency in these podcasts and instead, try to focus on the larger picture. 1. Letting go When we begin to learn Tai Chi we embrace something unique in our lives. Tai Chi teaches us - in subtle ways - the benefits of slowing down, relaxing during tense moments and perhaps most importantly, to let things be. The concept of letting things be, or leaving alone is generally misunderstood as non-intervention, but this is only a partial interpretation. It doesn't mean - we don't get involved. Rather, that we choose the right moment with insight and patience. Well look more at this concept in later podcasts. WHAT ELSE DOES TAI CHI TEACH US? 1. Stop the chatter It teaches us that by emptying our minds we can find space for other things to approach. Often, we find this very difficult, as our present culture does not always look too favourably on emptiness and empty minds. Instead we are encouraged to fill up our heads with facts, dry knowledge that enables us to quote interesting stats, but says little about our capacity to keep quiet. .so to balance this tendency....tai chi shows us how to put aside a little time for ourselves....a time that is a genuine and qualitative moment that enables us to disconnect from the matrix - even if for just a short while. Consequently the spirit is replenished, the mind is quietened and our energy levels are recharged. 1. Go slow Whilst the rest of the planet finds itself distracted by the communications age and consequently accelerates in order just to keep up, the Tai Chi practitioner slows down, steps back and watches as it all rushes by. Choosing the moment, the appropraite time to step in. We breathes deeply, and while we may be distracted by technology and the 10,000 things (see chapter on Philosophy) we are also diverted pleasantly by the texture of sunlight, the path of the moon or the movement of wind moving over water. So in Conclusion. Why do we learn tai chi? Yes we learn for meditative, spiritual and self-defense reasons - yet for many it begins, once more, with health. Physically, you are choosing to do something positive in life, something that will play a consistent, incremental and beneficial role in building your overall constitution, changing your posture, deepening your breath and improving your overall strength. 1. Finally, it is good to learn something that will not disappear within a couple of years, Ending up redundant on a rubbish heap like like many an mp3 player,...it is good to practice something that has a value independent of the time in which we practice it. Tai Chi has been around a long time and is getting more popular. In part this is because it is so open to all sexes, all ages and cultures. It is an art that you can practice today, and still be perfecting it when you are walking your last days on this planet. It is an art that is pretty cheap to learn, requires neither special equipment nor clothes, and can be carried with you everywhere you go! Imagine, if you will, an exercise and health regime in the 'cloud', which is always there, pushed down to you at any time, in any place. Tai Chi is an art for life. This was the first episode in the Talking Tai Chi series with the teapotmonk. Thanks for listening. Join me next week when we will be looking at WHAT HAPPENS IN A TAI CHI CLASS?
Chris Denwood has held a huge passion for martial arts and fitness ever since he was a child and has been actively participating in these disciplines since eleven years of age. Since this time, he has been exposed to various Asian systems including Aikido, Wing Chun, Ninjutsu, Iaido, Tai Chi and Chi Gung, which he has used to accentuate a higher understanding of his main art - Karate. Chris's training commenced primarily under the tutelage of Iain Abernethy (6th Dan), Gordon Harrison (5th Dan), Jim Robson (1st Dan) and visiting Chief Instructor, Sensei Doug James (8th Dan). Chris has written articles for notable martial arts/fitness periodicals including 'Combat', 'Traditional Karate', and 'Jissen'. In this minisode Chris Denwood talks about the launch of his new book.
There’s more than one healthcare crisis in this country. Of course, there’s the issue of coverage for everyone, but another crisis is exemplified by just how callous, narrow-minded, and often ineffectual our current medical system is.17 years ago I was paralyzed from the neck down with a crushed spinal cord and brain damage. Thankfully, my total quadriplegia was short-lived and through both hard work and good luck I was able to recover most of my previous abilities. But the sad truth was that most of my recovery was achieved not because of, but rather in spite of our vaunted medical system. Very little of it was due to traditional Western medical treatment. In fact, even when I was completely paralyzed and in almost inconceivable pain, I still had to summon the strength and fortitude to argue many times with the hospital staff to force access to alternative and non-traditional therapies. I even had to fight to see my own chart, because once they found that I was having my wife read it me, they physically removed it. My entire hospitalization seemed designed to disempower me, to leave me helpless and dependent. The assaults on my sanity and dignity that I suffered while a quadriplegic were extreme: One day a doctor breezed into my room with a gaggle of mostly female medical students in tow. He ripped off my sheet without even a ‘hello’, leaving me completely naked and shivering, and proclaimed ‘this man is obviously seriously neurologically compromised and will never function normally or walk again’. He then breezed out, without even bothering to cover me up. I shudder to think that this is the bedside manner taught to medical students, and I am amazed that doctors are either not cognizant of the profound psychological effects that their pronouncements have on patients, or simply don’t care. The power of suggestion, especially from an authority figure like a doctor, is a real, palpable phenomenon, yet they continue to blithely say terribly frightening and destructive things, ignorant of the fact that their words can have physical, even mortal consequences.Another day I was dragged off, without warning or explanation, and left shivering on a gurney alone in a back hallway for hours, until I was finally dragged off somewhere else for a new round of tests. I was traumatized, not just by my accident, but by this inhumane treatment. Some of the staff, particularly the doctors, treated me as an idiot or some kind of manikin, to be poked and prodded without regard for my pain, my emotions, or my dignity. And in all the time I was there, not one mental health professional visited me to see if they could help me retain my sanity and process what was happening to me. Even more ironic was the reaction I got when I exceeded the doctor’s expectations wildly. At best, I was supposed to never be able to handle stairs again, and to be in rehab for 6 months. Instead, I left after 3 weeks under my own power to a four story walk-up apartment. When I returned for a check up 6 weeks later, the neurologists clustered around me, amazed that my right arm, which had been clenched like a stroke-victim’s, was now working quite well. They proclaimed me a ‘miracle’. When I interjected that I was most certainly not a miracle, but rather the product of much hard work and Chinese Medicine, Chi Gung, and numerous other alternative therapies, they demurred – “oh, we don’t believe in that ‘chi’ claptrap”, they said. There was no open-mindedness among these supposedly empirical, scientific men, and no real curiosity about how I’d accomplished my practically unprecedented recovery. They knew better than the patient, case closed. They then prescribed a powerful drug for my spasticity that almost killed me. I quit the drug and redoubled my chi gung , which didn’t mask the rigidity and spasticity as the drug did, but rather allowed me to access my clenched muscles and learn how to release them. It’s ironic that in the years since, when my symptoms have returned, it is always the alternative therapies, the ones not covered by my insurance, which have helped me. Countless other people challenged by chronic disease or injury have also found their most efficacious treatment in alternative, unsanctioned modalities. Double-blind studies have proven the efficacy of some of these, like homeopathy and chi-gung – even though Western medicine can’t figure out how they work. But homeopathic medicine is cheap, and chi-gung, once you know it, is free. There’s no profit in it for the corporate medical infrastructure. And so instead we have a system that promotes big-ticket items like MRIs, radioactive tracers, and expensive and dangerous drugs. It’s been known for years that two people can have equally disturbing x-rays and MRIs, yet one can be wheelchair-bound and in terrible pain while the other plays tennis daily with no symptoms – but Western medicine seems oddly incurious about these suggestive nuances.. Luckily for me, I tend to rail against authority, so the dire pronouncements I’ve received have been more like challenges. A doctor tells me I’ll never walk again, I say oh yeah? And then I proceed to hike, bike, scuba dive, and generally thumb my nose at his supposed authority. But not everyone is as rebellious or perhaps resilient as I have been. We need a health care system that is interested in results, not the bottom line, and we need to educate our doctors to retain their humanity, to foster a real connection with their patients, and to be cognizant of their patient’s internal lives and psychological needs. Recently, a doctor told me that I had the worst spine she’d seen in thirty years. What possible therapeutic value was there in this comment? It only served to frighten and depress me. Why on earth didn’t she know that? Why aren’t doctors trained to be people first, healers second, and technicians third, instead of the other way around? When was the last time a radiologist or neurosurgeon or even your GP or internist touched you, either physically or emotionally, in a warm, giving, empathetic way? When did they engage in a meaningful dialogue wherein they listened respectfully as you described your symptoms without constant interjection? When was the last time you felt cared for, in the truest sense of the word? If the answer is recently, count yourself among the very lucky. Most of us are stuck with overworked, unimaginative technicians who throw drugs and MRIs at everything by reflex. We need a healthcare system that treats people – doctors and patients - as thinking, feeling individuals, not pieces of meat; one that prizes prevention and personal do-it-yourself responsibility over risky procedures and overlapping prescriptions of drugs, all of which interact in ill-understood ways to produce vicious side effects. Our healthcare industry in general has strayed away from the true meaning of healing. It’s become a haven for apparatchiks, technocrats, arrogant high-priests, and cynical businessmen. Here, as in so many other areas of our society, empathy, and humanity need to be restored to the fore for real healing to take place.
