The term “Koha” is not a Japanese term, it is in fact a Māori word, it is often used to describe a gift, but it goes a lot deeper. Joseph Herreman has dedicated more than 25 years to the study, instruction, preservation, and promotion of traditional martial arts, establishing himself as one of the Northern Plains’ most respected martial arts instructors and school owners. His martial arts journey began in 1999 under the guidance of Hanchi Julio “Mutch” Usera in Rapid City, South Dakota. While earning a degree in biology at South Dakota State University, Joseph founded the SDSU Jujitsu Club, transforming a small practice group into a thriving collegiate martial arts organization. After relocating to Sioux Falls, he opened Dynamic Martial Arts in 2007. Over the years, the academy has grown into one of the region’s premier multi-disciplinary martial arts schools, offering instruction in Bujin Ki Ryu Jujitsu, Matsumura Shorin Ryu Karate, Kobudo, Iaido, Kenjutsu, Tai Chi, HEMA Longsword, self-defense, and law enforcement defensive tactics. Through his longtime instructor, Julio Usera, Joseph was introduced to the late Ken Penland and later to George Alexander Hanshi, further expanding his training in Okinawan Kobudo, Japanese sword arts, and Matsumura Shorin Ryu Karate. His dedication led to earning Menkyo Okuden, a full instructor license, in Kamagata Ryu Kenjutsu. Joseph holds advanced black belt ranks in numerous martial arts, including Rokudan in both Bujin Ki Ryu Jujitsu and Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu, along with advanced ranks in Taiho Jutsu, Matsumura Kobudo, Matsumura Shorin Ryu Karate, and Eishin Ryu Iaido. Before becoming a full-time martial arts instructor, Joseph spent years teaching high school physics and chemistry. That scientific background continues to influence his approach to martial arts instruction, emphasizing biomechanics, practical application, and pressure-tested fundamentals. Inspiration is an important aspect of training, as is discipline and repetition of fundamentals etc. Our host shares some of his personal sources of inspiration in the form of different Sensei and individuals who have positively impacted his journey thus far. Arnis, Tantō-jutsu, Kobudo, Kenjutsu : pourquoi ces disciplines prennent tout leur sens avec l'âge L'épisode revient également sur la richesse du travail d'armes dans différents arts martiaux : Arnis Doblete Rapilon : une pratique fluide et intelligente du bâton, du couteau et du corps. Join us in our first episode of 2025 as we sit down with Sensei Mike Wall, a BJJ, MMA, Jiu Jitsu & Kobudo practitioner at Fenix Kampsport (Phoenix Martial Arts center). Sensei Mike Wall trains in Helsingborg, Sweden, and is passionate about seeing other people grow. He has worked as a sports instructor for 20 years and in Martial Arts since 1977. In addition to martial arts, Sensei Wall's Interests are chess and music. He has been a chairman of the Para-committee in the Swedish Budo & Martial Arts Association for 15 years. This, local and national, project is about putting people with disabilities in projects such as “Fungera Mera” (sports and joy of movement for everyone). Sensei Wall is also a member of the technical council of the World Karate Federation, WKF, where he works globally to create camps, events, and conferences. In this episode, we look at the weapons used in the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai Shows and examine their use in a martial art studio.  In our work task, we do any manual labor type of job that does raking, hoeing, or shoveling that strengthens the hands, wrists, and shoulders, so that you can successfully have the ability to handle weapons.  Then we teach some of the basics of Kobudo Weapon use including common strikes used with some the beginning weapon classes.  Lastly, we talk about legality and when to use them in certain situations.

Energy is everything. If we don't have energy we can't do much of anything. It's important for you to have energy not just for yourself, but so you're there for others. Furthermore, we may have energy — but what if we're full of negatively-charged energy? Students of many Okinawan, Japanese, and Korean martial arts styles — including Shotokan, Taekwondo, Aikido, Karate, Goju-ryu, Kobudo, Kendo, Kyokushin, and Judo — use a kihup (sometimes spelled kiai, kihap, or kyup) to startle an opponent, intimidate, or to exude confidence. Kihup comes from two root words. "Ki" is energy or life force. "Hup" means to gather or concentrate. Therefore, a kihup is a gathering or concentration of energy and power. A kihup serves many purposes, but it's always synchronized with movement. It conjures up greater force when striking. It protects our bodies by exhaling and preventing getting the wind knocked out of us if we get hit. It intimidates an opponent or assailant. And it increases our confidence while relieving anxiety as it releases negative energy at the same time it's "working in" good energy. Tim and Steve talk about this amazing burst of air, which some even call a spirit shout.
