Kriste was very active as a child and that continued throughout her adulthood. After moving to CO she realized that she was having trouble breathing just walking upstairs and as an active person Kriste didn't accept that. After acclimating to her new surroundings and seeking help from a running coach, Kriste went from being winded on the stairs to doing what she loved, running. Kriste also really enjoyed hiking and wanted to see more of the trail faster, which led her to trail running. Trail running, like many outdoor activities, noticeably lacks diversity and can often pose quite an obstacle for many people. A feeling she has experienced firsthand, Kriste advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion and strives to make space for those who may not feel like trail running is for them. Kriste leverages her experience and knowledge as a trail running coach and meditation instructor. She likes to sprinkle in meditation mindsets into her coaching to highlight awareness while running. Kriste is part of so many amazing organizations; she is on the board of Running Start, a self-defense and personal safety trainer at Impact Personal Safety of CO, the program director at Women's Wilderness, and a Coach for Life's Too Short Fitness. Most of these organizations have a common thread of empowerment and facilitating outdoor adventure activities for women and nonbinary folks. One of the things I love about my guest this week is how she is courageous about following her curiosity! Kriste Peoples is a Denver-based writer, producer, speaker, women's trail running coach, and outdoorist. That wasn't always her gig!  She started off as a graphic designer working in New York City, but she had an aha moment that led her to move to Arizona to go to graduate school for writing and she didn't stop exploring there.  Her work in the field of equity and inclusion in nature combines speaking and facilitating transformational experiences for others. As founder of Black Women's Alliance of Denver she extends her passion for connecting underrepresented communities to new, empowering narratives of wellness.

On any given day Kriste can be found running / hiking in the wilds of Colorado or sharing her passion for mindfulness and meditation. As an ambassador for both movement and mindfulness, Kriste encourages women, and especially women of color, to stretch beyond the known and familiar. “I am at this intersection of running or hiking and being in nature and wonder. Returning to a sense of beginner's mind and rightsizing myself in the world.” I met Kriste at Sounds True where I was part of a summit she was producing. Since then I've been blessed to get to know her as a friend, and to marvel at her stamina, smile, and sass on and off the trail. (Join her IG and follow along on her adventures.) In this episode we talk about belonging, being inspired by others to go beyond old boundaries and limitations, being brave, and the beauty all around how how to tune back in. https://kristepeoples.com/ (https://kristepeoples.com) https://www.instagram.com/kristepeoples (https://www.instagram.com/kristepeoples) http://blackwomensalliance.com/ (http://blackwomensalliance.com) “You know, sometimes we might think that our issues are the only show in town, but you know, when we take a moment to stand under a a hundred year old tree or to feel the breeze blowing over us and really feel the impact of what that is and what that means and how we're part of a vast ecosystem... by the time we come back home, well, we can come home to ourselves in those moments." Kriste Peoples is a runner, writer, and meditation teacher, and when she's not out adventuring along the trails of Colorado's Front Range, she's likely writing about it (or recovering with carbs in a local eatery). She can also be spotted offering talks about engagement in nature, gently nudging others to take up the cause of fun in the outdoors.   When it comes to finding synergy between running and our core selves, Kriste Peoples has found it. As a meditation and mindfulness teacher, running coach, avid trail runner, and outdoor guide, Kriste helps us all use running as a tool to feel more present in the hustle and bustle of life.    Kriste is a leader in inspiring women to pursue adventure in the outdoors while maintaining a grounding presence within themselves.   “When we're running we're invited to pay attention to what's going on in your body and opens us up to deeper connections with the people we are with. It also allows us to come back more relaxed and refreshed to be better people in our relationships at home and have more compassion for others.” –Kriste Peoples    In this episode we cover… Exploring the parallels between our running practice and meditation practice.  How you can cut through the noise and narrow down the core of what mindful running means to you.  Redefining what meditation looks like for you. It doesn't have to be a solitary space or rock garden. It can be those 5 breaths you take when you feel flustered while heading out the door with a mug in one hand, a child in the other, your tote bag on your shoulder and shoes in the other arm.  “You can catch yourself in a moment. Just breathe five seconds now. You would be very hard pressed not to have five seconds in your day. If you don't have five seconds, you've got bigger problems than not being able to meditate.” We need connection in America right now. Running has the power to heal and bring a healing presence to those who are united by it.  The ways we can look back at our lives and reframe moments and redefine what they mean to us.    Resources:   Kriste's Website   Instagram @KristePeoples   Thank you to Athletic Greens, Picky Bars, and Tracksmith for sponsoring this episode.   Athletic Greens is a simple and easy way to get 75 vitamins, minerals, and whole food source ingredients. Creating more opportunities for access to outdoor recreation allows young women of color to define their own narratives in the outdoors. Organizations like Young Women Who Crush and Women’s Wilderness are playing a key role opening up the door to the benefits of spending time in nature. In the second episode of See Us Outside, Gabaccia explores the systemic barriers to accessing the outdoors and the liberation and healing that can occur when a woman of color gets to choose it for herself.About the series: This special She Explores miniseries is made in collaboration with The Cairn Project, and made possible by a grant from the Walton Family Foundation.Host Gabaccia Moreno is our guide in exploring the unique relationships girls and young women of color have with the natural world and outdoor recreation. Through the voices and stories of leaders and participants from diverse outdoor organizations doing the work to help young people of color thrive in the outdoors, this four-part audio miniseries will highlight the joy, connection, and community these girls find in nature, as well as the importance of organizations doing the work to expand outdoor opportunities. We want to stress that when we say this series highlights women and girls of color, this is inclusive of all cis and trans women and girls, as well as folks of all gender identities who feel comfortable in spaces that center women. That said, for the most part, when we talk about gender we most often do so in terms of those who are socialized as girls and women in a more heteronormative, binary way.Featured in this episode: Cristal Cisneros, Kriste Peoples, Alexis Krauss, Marian Perez, and Mira Manickam-Shirley;  Voice memo included in this episode were submitted by Gabrilla Ballard.Hosted by Gabaccia MorenoProduced by Gabaccia Moreno, Noël Russell, and Gale StraubA Production of Ravel MediaResources:The Cairn ProjectWebsite | Instagram | FacebookOrganizations HighlightedYoung Women Who Crush: Website | InstagramWomen’s Wilderness: Website | Instagram | FacebookBrown Girl Surf: Website | Instagram | FacebookThe Charles Roundtree Bloom Project: Website | InstagramFeatured in this episode:Cristal CisnerosKriste PeoplesAlexis KraussMarian PerezMira Manickam-ShirleyVoice Memos FeaturedGabrilla Ballard | Instagram | WebsiteHost: Gabaccia MorenoWebsite | InstagramAll Four Episodes of See Us Outside Are Available Now Wherever You Listen to She ExploresThe opening See Us Outside Compilation includes the voices of Marinel De Jesus, Yakuta Poonawalla, Meggy Pyaneeandee, Fernanda Jardim, Arlene, Chi Pham, Denise Meeker and Doreen Wong and includes Spanish, French, Portuguese, Tagalog, Hindi, Vietnamese, Cantonese, and English. Music by Joy Ike & Sita via MusicBedPodcast Art by Susana Castro @susdraws

Kriste Peoples magically fell into my life when I was looking for local models for Skirt Sports. We've always worked hard to showcase real women from the community of all ages, sizes, ethnic diversity and more. From the first moment she smiled for the camera, it was obvious she was special. Kriste has that glow. That magical glow that truly special people exude when they're smiling (and even when they're not smiling) - they light up the world from the inside out. Kriste has been on the show before - Mile Repeat 7 from October 2018 - "Kriste Peoples Says YES." Because that has always been her philosophy which you'll hear more about today. But what's interesting is that she has also realized there are very important times to say no. Like when I reached out to her in June to talk about systemic racism in our country. She was so devastated by the events that had recently occurred that her answer at that time was... no. This is so important to recognize because we do need to support those moments in our lives when we need to regroup, renourish our souls, find our new paths. I'm going through one right now myself. Today Kriste has emerged stronger, with a deep emotional perspective on what is happening to our country. And she has also discovered some new tools to help find the calm within the storm - namely meditation. In fact she is launching her first ever guided meditation course called "Mindfulness: A Contemplative Intro to Awareness Meditation." Check it out! It's only $20 for 4 sessions starting November 16, 2020. For more Kriste Peoples, go to her website, follow her on social @kristepeoples and become a fan because she is doing amazing things!
