In his fourth appearance on The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, Thomas Kersting—licensed therapist, author, and former school counselor—returns to share what he's witnessed over 25 years on the front lines of youth mental health. From skyrocketing anxiety levels since 2012 to rising oppositional behavior and sleep deprivation, Kersting explains how screens, social conformity, and parental fear have reshaped childhood—and not for the better. But he also offers hope: the solution is far simpler than most realize. With deep warmth and clarity, Kersting makes a powerful case for play, silence, movement, and in-person connection. He affirms that parents should set limits, should pull back from tech, and should fight for childhood as it once was. And yes—he says it loud and clear—parents are absolutely right to nag their children to go outside. This episode is a wake-up call and a rallying cry for families who want something better.

The National Park System (NPS) is a national treasure. US National Parks represent just about every type of feature and wildlife you can imagine. And it's not just parks: The NPS includes national monuments, memorials, scenic trails, lakeshores, battlefields, recreation areas, and more. The concept of a national park is credited to George Catlin, a 19th-century lawyer, painter, and adventurer. His travels took him all over the burgeoning United States, where he met fifty native tribes. He also worried about the loss of wildlife, wilderness, and indigenous people as America expanded westward into the frontier. His solution? A ‘nation's park' — land protected by the government for future generations. That vision became reality in 1872, when Yellowstone, in what's now Wyoming, became the first national park established by Congress. Now there are 63 National Parks across the US and its territories, from Acadia in Maine to Yosemite in California, Denali in Alaska to Dry Tortugas in Florida, and so many more in between. In this episode, we explore the almost overwhelming awesomeness of the NPS and take a virtual tour of some of the coolest experiences you can have in nature. We learn about the history of hippos and the Everglades, meet the most dangerous animal in the Grand Canyon, and learn the best place to eat popovers in Maine. Then we recommend five books that took us on big adventures in national parks, including a historical novel in Oklahoma, an adventure story in the Pacific Northwest, a murder mystery in Michigan, a memoir in Arizona, and a Bigfoot tale in Washington. Shelterwood by Lisa Wingate Wild: A Journey from Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed A Superior Death by Nevada Barr A Walk in the Park: The True Story of a Spectacular Misadventure in the Grand Canyon by Kevin Fedarko Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre by Max Brooks For more on the books we recommend, plus the other cool stuff we talk about, visit show notes. This week we head to St Patrick's Primary School in Curtlestown to visit their outdoor classroom. A place nestled under trees where students connect to nature and even do maths!
In this episode, I chat with Nic Russo, the Education Manager for the American River Conservancy (ARC), to explore the significance and impact of environmental education in defining places and our connections to them. While previous episodes have been more focused on conservation and restoration, this discussion pivots to the importance of experiential learning, especially in nature, and how it not only compliments the work of land trusts, but acts as a foundation. We talk about the realities of how limiting such opportunities can turn students into quote unquote robots due to the formulaic, memorization-centric traditional education system in the U.S. We dive into Nic's personal and professional experiences, explaining how exposure to nature and outdoor education shaped his career and views; leading to the basis of his current education philosophy, that understanding and engaging with local nature can foster a lasting appreciation and motivate people to protect it. The episode also delves into the historical context of ARC's education programs and highlights the challenges and aspirations for integrating more outdoor educational experiences into the school curriculum. Ultimately, we arrive to the conclusion that environmental education is the essential component that bridges the efforts of conservation and stewardship, answering the so what or who cares questions that come up in this field of work. Hey, it's Amy Newmark with your Chicken Soup for the Soul. With spring on its way, I thought it would be good to talk about nature and why you should go on a nature kick and get out there. I noticed that we started getting a lot more stories about going outside during the pandemic when people were focused on what they could do while at home and they seemed to rediscover the outdoors. 93% of our time is spent inside, but God's creation is trying to tell us a better story. It's time to go outside: let the wonder of creation lead you to worship the Creator, and let the reality of seasons remind you that while you're still waiting, God is still working.

It was set up in 2020 after the tragic death of his son through knife crime, when Marlon realised how much nature was helping him and that he wanted to engage his community with it too. We Go Outside Too is based in Birmingham and they offer days out in the countryside, walks, tree planting and outdoor poetry workshops. Transport and kit are often provided and they are supported by brands and organisations, including Merrell. They've organised more than 30 walks so far and engaged more than 1,000 people with their events. The social enterprise won a Head Outside Award in 2023 at Kendal Mountain Festival - awards which celebrate people or organisations helping people with mental health challenges to get outdoors. Marlon lives in Birmingham and he took Liv for a walk on Harborne Walkway to record their podcast episode. Formerly a railway line, it's now a green, quiet oasis in a bustling, noisy city. Liv sought to find out why Marlon wanted to engage his community with the outdoors, and what's been the impact of We Go Outside Too so far? If you enjoy this episode, it would fantastic if you could subscribe. And do tell your family and friends about it - thank you! There's nothing better than a really good laugh. What's even better is, laughing offers some excellent health benefits too. I begin this episode by explain how laughter may just be the best medicine. https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/a19968254/live-laugh-love/ For centuries, humans have been drinking alcohol. Why do people drink? Is it really the taste, the smell and all the nuances of your drink of choice or is it really just for the buzz? Why are some people able to drink socially while other people have had their lives destroyed by alcohol? Could it be that we would have never achieved all the advancements of our civilization had we not had alcohol to drink? Listen as I explore these and other questions with my guest Edward Slingerland. He is a professor of philosophy at the University of British Columbia and author of the book Drunk: How we Slipped, Danced, and Stumbled our way to Civilization (https://amzn.to/2WONrif) There is a smell that happens after it rains. And interestingly, smelling that smell is good for you. That's just one of many reasons why we all should be spending more time outside in nature according to my guest Lucy Jones who has researched the science regarding the amazing benefits of being in simply being out in the natural world. Lucy is the author of the book Losing Eden: Our Fundamental Need for the Natural World and Its Ability to Heal Body and Soul (https://amzn.to/3j7YUky). Listen as she explains why it doesn't take much to get the mental and physical benefits nature has to offer. On a job interview, there is a bit of a dilemma: You want to look good so you think you should maybe brag a bit about your accomplishments. On the other hand, a little modesty might be good too. Which is better? It depends on who you are. Listen as I explain. https://www.rutgers.edu/news/rutgers-study-finds-male-modesty-turn-women-and-men Learn more about your ad choices.
