A year and a half ago, at the now ‘masters' age of 59, I was out taking a brisk walk as part of my daily exercise and I realized I suddenly wanted to run again. That's when I found ‘The Planted Runner.' It spoke to my lifestyle, the way I see the world and gave me instructions that I could follow implement in my day-to-day life. It inspired me at a time of of life when it's hard to sometimes become inspired. I just recently finished my first 10k at the age of 60 and now I'm training to see if I could possibly do a half marathon. Your podcast in addition to the techniques, recipes, and science-based motivation, has been a game changer. A couple weeks ago, I heard someone say something along the lines of "all training goals are also nutrition goals." I can't remember the exact quote. I can't even remember where I heard it - although I'd bet it was on an old episode of RX'd Radio. But the sentiment stuck with me. How did I build my way to a 2:58 marathon at age 42 with no injuries? A big part of it was strength training. If you don't want to be one of the 50-80% of runners who gets injured this year, proper strength training can help hedge your bets. While there's no way to 100% guarantee that you'll be one of the lucky healthy runners, strengthening your body for running can make a big difference. Today, I'm introducing you to my strength coach, Ryan McMullen. Welcome to the Planted Runner. I'm Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition. In this conversation, Ryan and I will go over: Exactly how much and what kind of strength training helps runners best Whether we should lift heavy or light or both And why and how you should mix up the ratio of strength training to running in different seasons I also ask Ryan what it's like to train me and I promise you we didn't edit his answer at all! Ryan has worked with hundreds of clients on nutrition, strength training, and more. He has owned a CrossFit gym in California since 2014 (but don't worry, he doesn't make me do CrossFit!). He coaches nutrition and strength with MetPro and helps clients navigate their goals from weight loss, body composition changes, training programs, and increasing performance across a wide range of different sports. Including runners like us. Now, a little warning that Ryan and I have a few differing opinions on certain aspects of training for endurance runners, which you'll hear. But that's actually pretty great since there are lots of ways to build muscle and my preferred way might not be the most effective for you. If you want to reach your true potential, it's not enough to just train your body. You need to train your mind. To become your best, you need to develop both the skills needed to push hard and the ability to pace and hold back. Thankfully, both of those get better with time and practice. On today's episode of the Planted Runner Podcast, I invited the runner who literally wrote the book on pacing to teach you how to do it right. Matt Fitzgerald has written over 30 books to date on everything to do with running and his new one “On Pace: Discover How to Run Every Race at Your Real Limit” is another must-read for runners. We talk about: what it means to pace properly why most runners are naturally really bad at it, and we also go over practical techniques that you can use today to get better at it yourself Matt is always great to talk to and I know you'll come away from this conversation with some new ways to pace and race just a little closer to your true limits.

Better running form makes a huge difference in running your best. But you can't just go out and try to run with better form. Well, at least not for very long. Your body will soon revert back to however you always run once your mind starts thinking about what's for dinner or what you're doing this weekend. BUT there are great ways to train your mind and your body to run better. It's just that most of them don't happen on the run. Want to know who arguably has the best running form in the world? Of course, it's the non-arguably best marathoner who's ever lived, Eliud Kipchoge. On today's Planted Runner Podcast, you'll learn: exactly why his form is so good what good running form should feel like how you can get a little closer to running like the best in the world Spoiler alert: You won't ever run like Kipchoge. Not even the rest of the elites run like him. But he can teach us to run better in our own unique way.
