For the 8th installment of the Runners Who Read Podcast, Olivia sat down with Lauren Fleshman, the NY Times bestselling author of Good for a Girl. In addition to being an author, Lauren is an entrepreneur and one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time. She won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national titles as a professional going on to finish as high as 7th in the 5k at the 2011 World Championships in South Korea. As a writer, her work has appeared in The New York Times and Runner's World and her recent memoir, Good For A Girl: A Woman Running in a Man's World, debuted at 10th on the New York Times bestseller list in the hardcover non-fiction category. She is also a co-founder of Picky Bars, a company that sells performance bars made with real food ingredients, and co-creator of Believe I Am, a company that champions the physical, mental, social, and emotional benefits of running by connecting athletes with sports psychology resources and conducting research on pregnancy for elite athletes.   In this live recorded book club discussion from April 2023, we talk about the importance of nutrition and recovery in avoiding Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (also known as RED-S), the differences between the development curve of boys and girls' sports performance upon reaching puberty, and the importance of the role of coaches in the development and success of women in sports through the lens of Lauren's own upbringing in sports. By the end, she leaves us with some impactful takeaways regarding the importance of sharing your story and action items that we can take away to make sports a better place for women and girls at every level.   Follow Lauren: Instagram - @fleshmanflyer X - @laurenfleshman   More Information on Runners Who Read: Runners Who Read Book Club | Atlanta Track Club

Send us a textGood For A Girl by Lauren Fleshman is the story of Lauren's life and experience in professional running. Running seemed straight forward when she was growing up, you work hard and you get the reward, but women don't have the same performance trajectory as men when going through puberty. Women often plateau as they get used to their "new body" after puberty, but this comes at an inconvenient time in college when coaches are picking top performers for scholarships and want their team to win in the NCAA system. Lauren's story is about navigating her time in the NCAA, what she saw during her time competing at the college level and beyond (including competitors who would disappear from the running scene following struggles with eating disorders) and why it's important to change things for future girls and women.Who is Lauren Fleshman? This week we are joined by the incredible Lauren Fleshman, New York Times bestselling author of "Good for a Girl", to discuss the systemic ways that our sports culture fails women and girls, and how we can create a better future for the next generation of female athletes.  We dive into how the natural and expected changes in a young women's body during adolescence are met with misunderstanding and pathology, and how the sports systems that girls and women find themselves in are built by men, for men and boys. They don't currently account for or support the experience of the female athlete. Even if you aren't a female-bodied human or an athlete, I hope you'll tune into this episode. This is such an important conversation about challenging the patriarchy and policing of women's bodies, far beyond athletics and running. As always, please listen with compassion and empathy for yourself and any past (or current) experiences this may bring up for you. Tune in to hear more about… The inspiration behind Lauren's book, Good for a Girl How prevalent disordered eating is when girls in adolescence, even into their college years The objectification of female bodies during adolescence How the US sports systems are built for around a default male body The significant differences between young girls and boys when training for sports The lack of normalization and support that girls and young women receive in sports during adolescence What happens when girls fight against natural body changes The rate that young girls drop out of sports What is viewed as "essential equipment" for boys in sports versus girls The financial pressure of athlete scholarships and ensuring performance at the expense of health If weight loss and losing a menstrual cycle is "normal" during sports training The extended time period to truly recover from undereating and overtraining in a women's body Redefining excellence for women in sports beyond race times and body-focused numbers How high risk women athletes are funneled into college sports Performative health and how food choices are policed in athlete spaces What's next for Lauren in her career  About Lauren: Lauren Fleshman is an award winning author and one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. Remarkable Marketing

We're willing to bet that you're working on a new B2B campaign and require some new inspiration.Because all B2B tech ads look and sound the same. They just melt into one shapeless, forgettable jumble of fingers typing and screens scrolling. But we see you plodding along in the B2B marketing marathon of sameness, and we're throwing you some jet-boosted sneakers. On this episode of Remarkable, we're daring you to do the exact opposite of your competitors, to outsource the authenticity of your brand voice to your customers, and much, much more. And we're doing that with the help of our special guest, Senior Director of Brand at Axonius, Kaite Rosa. Together, we're exploring the iconic and visionary 2007 Nike ad campaign featuring pro runner Lauren Fleshman. We look at how the ad deviated from the “tasteful nude” status quo of female athletes in ads, dismantled the objectification of women in sports, and promoted inclusivity by leveraging Lauren's voice. And how you too can subvert expectations, make a statement, and do it authentically. So lace up your new sneaks and get ready to redefine B2B ads on the latest episode of Remarkable.About Nike's “Objectify Me” CampaignNike's “Objectify Me” campaign was a 2007 ad featuring pro runner Lauren Fleshman. It's a 30-second black and white slow mo video of Lauren running toward the camera. And we hear Lauren's voice. She says, “Look at me, study me, understand me. I'm not a small, pink version of a man. Don't give me small, pink versions of a man's running shoe. I'm Lauren Fleshman. I'm a runner, and I'm a woman.” Then it shows her running out of frame, and the Nike logo pops up on screen. It's a really understated Nike ad that deviated FAR from its predecessors.Lauren is a decorated distance runner. She won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional athlete. She's also a writer, having been featured in The New York Times and Runner's World. Lauren is now Brand Strategy Advisor for fitness apparel company Oiselle, and Co-Founder of natural food company Picky Bars. Her book Good For a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man's World came out in January 2023.About our guest, Kaite RosaKaite Rosa is Senior Director of Brand at Axonius, where she leads the team responsible for creating a $2.6 billion brand in less than five years. Cited as one of the fastest-growing cybersecurity brands in history, Axonius has been named one of the most valuable private cloud companies in the world by the Forbes Cloud 100, along with numerous industry accolades.A life-long writer, she is passionate about using storytelling and creative concepts to define and build exceptional brand experiences. She has spent the bulk of her career at tech startups, and thrives on rapidly growing, fast-paced teams. Previously, she led brand and content at Payfactors, Virgin Pulse, and VentureFizz. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Nike's “Objectify Me” Campaign: Do the opposite of what's expected. Look at what other companies in your space are doing in their campaigns and make a campaign based on the antithesis of that. Be the rebel in your industry. Subvert the expected. Kaite says so many brands feel like they have to join in on what's popular or trending. She says, “There's a lot of, like, ‘Me too,' right? Like, they're gonna copy it and try to make it their own, and look very similar. But what inspires me the most is looking at what your competitors are doing and doing the exact opposite.” It's like how Lauren Fleshman was presented with a briefing inspired by Brandi Chastain's “tasteful nude” ad, and advocated instead to be in her athletic gear and to write the ad copy herself. She turned the copy on its head, saying that if she was going to be objectified, it would be to design running gear specific to her physiology. And the campaign became iconic.Outsource authenticity to your customers. Make your customer's voice your brand voice. Ian says marketers always want to control the narrative, but sometimes you need to let your customers take the wheel. Because he says that when you ask customers to talk about your brand in their own words, “They come up with something absolutely brilliant that you could never have written.” And how could that not be authentic? Nike was able to outsource the authenticity piece of Lauren's ad because Lauren wrote the copy herself. For sure, there was a layer of brand approval, but the words are Lauren's. So outsource the authenticity piece of your ad copy to customers, and it will resonate.Quotes*”Whether you're working in a bootstrapped company or publicly funded company. any budget can accommodate your customer voice.” - Kaite Rosa*”If you're doing a high-level brand campaign, the approach shouldn't be, ‘Let's sell you all the features and benefits.' It should be, ‘Let's get you in the store. Let's get you remembering who we are so that the next time you need those new sneakers or you need a B2B SaaS solution,  you remember the ad.'” - Kaite Rosa*”What is memorable and where storytelling really comes alive is when you look at what's out there and say, ‘We're gonna do something that is disruptive, that is different. And I think that you can do that on any budget.” - Kaite Rosa*“People latch on to the authenticity of brands. That's what drives you emotionally to a brand, is that it feels authentic. It resonates with you. And I think living and breathing your values in everything you do, if you're at a company with a culture that encourages that, that ties your values into everything you do, it comes naturally. Lauren Fleshman is one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times and Runner's World. She is the brand strategy advisor for Oiselle, a fitness apparel company for women, and the co-founder of Picky Bars, a natural food company. She is the author of the NY Times Bestseller Good for a Girl, an extraordinary look at female athletes and the struggles they face in a male dominated world.  As the book description says, “Fleshman's story of falling in love with running as a girl, being pushed to her limits and succumbing to devastating injuries, and daring to fight for a better way for female athletes. Long gone are the days when women and girls felt lucky just to participate; Fleshman and women everywhere are waking up to the reality that they're running, playing, and competing in a world that wasn't made for them. Drawing on not only her own story but also emerging research on the physiology and psychology of young athletes, of any gender, Fleshman gives voice to the often-silent experience of the female athlete and argues that the time has come to rebuild our systems of competitive sport with women at their center. Written with heart and verve, Good for a Girl is a joyful love letter to the running life, a raw personal narrative of growth and change, and a vital call to reimagine sports for young women.” This is an extraordinary conversation about women in sport, raising and coaching female athletes, and finding your voice and your soul in a world that devalues the humanity of so many. Lauren Fleshman is best known for running fast. But she's also an entrepreneur, coach, teacher, facilitator, and a heck of a writer. She has an amazing blog which has gained a lot of traction and popularity over the years, and she's just finished her book, Good for a Girl. That book is really at the core and the center of today's conversation. In the middle of our conversation today, I actually introduce her bio to her because I was curious to get her perspective on it. If you're in the running community, you're probably familiar with Lauren's work. She's one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time. She also is a brand strategy advisory for Oiselle, which is a fitness apparel company for women. She was sponsored by Nike for many years, which she talks about at length in the book. She's also the co-founder (with her husband) of Picky Bars, which is a natural food company. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Runner's World, and many other places. She currently lives in Bend, Oregon and is a mother. She is someone who has multiple identities, like many of us. And yet, a lot of her life has been focused on her identity as a runner. This is a wide-ranging conversation that gets into mental health, depression, suicidal thoughts, and more. It's a heavy conversation, but you'll find Lauren to be engaging, open, vulnerable, and someone that I am grateful that I got to learn with.   Lauren had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “The price that you have to pay to make it work for you can sometimes be a very high cost” (7:00). “Even though I was winning in that system, it made me uncomfortable that so many people in that system were losing and experiencing harm” (7:15). “I don't assume that things are the way they are for any good reason” (7:30). “Brilliant perspectives can come from outside the scientific community” (7:50). “A lot of the contributions of women in society [are invisible]” (9:00). “There are ways to be successful that minimize harm” (15:25). “It's okay to want to succeed. It's not okay to put the blinders on and not look at the harm caused” (15:35). “Being on the same team is how you survive” (19:10). “I want to make something useful out of things I've learned that could be picked up by other people and create shifts inside them” (21:10). “I never underestimate the power of a subtle shift in someone” (21:20). “You write for the reader and you write for yourself” (22:20). “Move your body no matter what, and lower the bar of what that means, when you're having a bad time” (34:30). “Make sure you have people who are available to you who you can be vulnerable with” (34:50). “It's a hard time to start being vulnerable with someone when you're feeling super blue. Let people in” (35:10). “Accept that {anxiety} is part of hard things” (37:10). “Lower the stakes. It's a game” (38:45). “Our ignorance is so collectively great on the female athlete experience, the female body experience, that we are making young people make conclusions about their future in sport or what they're capable of based on a very short window of their life when their body is changing, and we're making them afraid of those changes” (43:30). “I'm a very present-focused person” (54:15). “I think [loyalty] is overrated” (55:55). “Agitation is the opposite of calmness” (1:00:00). “Mantras were a way to ground myself in running with predetermined sayings and sentences” (1:00:20). “People call it a mid-life crisis. I call it a mid-life opportunity” (1:07:30). “We've got to show our mistakes and our vulnerability in order to encourage other people to look at their own” (1:10:50).   Additionally, you can check out Lauren's website here. You can also follow Lauren on Instagram. Thank you so much to Lauren for coming on the podcast! Lauren details her new book which uses her personal experience and the challenges she faced as a collegiate and professional athlete in a male-centric environment, as a catalyst to bring about significant change in women's athletics. Matt and Lauren discuss women's sports in a male arena and how to reframe the female experience in a way that is grounded in knowledge of the female body. They cover the taboo of female physiology embedded in the culture of the sport. Lauren dissects the toxic talk that hinders natural performance development, can lead to body dysmorphia, and can encourage disordered eating habits in athletes. Matt and Lauren offer applicable tools for developing a foundation of support for female athletes as coaches, teammates, and loved ones, to help foster positive and healthy growth, improved performance, and longevity. Regina Lopez: Love Always Wins - R4R 269

The Running for Real Podcast

Regina Lopez is a pro runner for Salomon, competed in the 2020 Olympic Trial Marathon, and won her first Spartan Trail Race.  Last year she set a new 50 mile treadmill world record (8:41:37), despite never having trained for or run anything longer than a marathon and never having run longer than six miles on a treadmill.  You'd never expect that somebody so accomplished would struggle with confidence and self-image, but she has.  Today she talks about how she works through those issues, the importance of surrounding yourself with people who believe in you, and taking on the challenge of trying new things.   Know that you are equal to them, that if you put in the work and you get in that line, you  belong there, and I did belong there. Throughout her twenties, Regina mainly ran marathons, and it was starting to get old.  “I was just doing the same thing, and just hanging out with the same people doing the same thing and I just got bored,” she recalls.  She had friends who ran Spartan races and followed Courtney Dauwalter and other ultra runners, and was intrigued by the idea of running trails and longer distances.   So she entered the Spartan Trail US Championship Women's 21K in 2019.  She hadn't focused on trail running, and she wasn't sponsored at the time, so seeing all of the sponsored athletes competing was a little intimidating.  But, she says, “I just went in that race, I had fun. I was competitive, I raced my own race, and I won.”  In 2021 she ran her first ultra, the 50K Road National Championship, and earned second place. I wanted to be part of something where I felt included, where I felt that it was something bigger than myself, with people who want to just grow, who are about inclusion, who are about just treating people right.  She caught the attention of Salomon, which she believes is the perfect sponsor for her.  They're not as interested in her times as in who she is as a person.  If that wasn't the case, if she didn't feel welcome, she wouldn't have taken the sponsorship. To live a life where you're not being acknowledged, you're not being appreciated, you're not doing something that's rewarding, then why do it? When Covid hit, Regina realized that she wanted to be more than “just a runner.”  She'd been so focused on being an athlete that she had never thought she'd have a career.  She'd also never had anyone support her ambitions.  Then she found her current job, which she loves, working with children with autism.  Like Salomon, it feels like a community, and she has mentors to help her grow.   When I got into running it made me feel like I was strong, like people's opinions didn't matter to me. Yeah, that's how I gained confidence and so I just put all my focus on running. There were many times when Regina felt alone and self-conscious.  She had a speech problem and didn't begin speaking until she was five.  Ever since she was a baby, she was called “chubby.”  It wasn't intended to be mean; people thought it was cute, but it hurt.   She was athletic, though, and played basketball and volleyball, and then got into running and weight training.  All of that helped her shift her mindset and appreciate what her body can do. When I've been put down so much during my life, I feel like that pushes me to want to achieve that goal. Regina didn't have access to a track and did all of her running workouts on the streets of Los Angeles.  She didn't have money for college tuition.  But the more that people told her that she wouldn't run competitively or go to college, the more determined she was to prove them wrong.  In her senior year of high school, she went to a running camp at UCLA.  She earned a college scholarship.   When she was at the running camp, the coach told her, “keep running; we need more representation.”  At first what he meant didn't click, but then, she says, “I went to a half marathon and a woman and her daughter came up to me after the race and the mom, she said, ‘thank you so much.' You know, ‘you're a strong Latina woman. We need more women like you.'”  Now she loves giving the encouragement that she lacked when she was growing up to other young women. It just feels great when I know I'm making an influence.  Like there's two girls, they actually went to my 50 mile treadmill race. And every time I see them, they always tell me, “you inspire me,” and it just feels great that I'm able to encourage other female young runners. Mishka Shubaly: We're Here Because We're Not All There - R4R 267

At 32, writer/musician Mishka Shubaly could have stepped out of a Bukowski novel.  Then, after nearly twenty years of hard drinking, he quit cold turkey.  A few months after getting sober,  he ran five miles: “My life seemed to shift a few degrees.  New possibilities had only been negative for a long time - it was possible that I would wind up in rehab; it was possible that I would wind up in jail.  Suddenly some invisible divider had cracked and then shattered.  It was now possible that I could do good things, too.” Within a year he ran his first ultra marathon. His bestseller, The Long Run, is a raw, yet often humorous, chronicle of his substance abuse and becoming a runner. Mishka no longer has "one foot in the gutter and the other in the grave."  On this week's episode, he shares his thoughts on religion, education, getting older, and of course, running. I made it as as honest and ugly as my experience had been, and when I when I turned it in, I was like, this is going to f***ing destroy any writing career that I have because I copped to so much. Because there's just so much filth and weakness, and then the response that I got was wild. When his editor suggested that he write about becoming a runner, Mishka was less than enthusiastic. “I didn't want to write about my transformation,” he says, “because in 2011 that was an old story and I was like, “no it's b**s***.  I'm not gonna write another one of those Lifetime made-for-TV movies. You know, the guy learns to run and then figures out all these relationships and it ends with this sort of rosy hued sunset and the family reunites, because it's b***s***, you know? And that's not what it's like.”  That wasn't what his editor had in mind.  He wanted him to write about finding himself trapped in the inspirational narrative against his will.  So that's what Mishka gave him, and the response was overwhelming. We root for the underdog, and in people's mistakes and weakness and vulnerability, we see our own. Mishka's brutal honesty about his life empowers readers and audience members to share their own stories with him. “Men will come up to me after shows and just reveal stuff to me where I'm like, “keep your voice down; this is a secret,” you know? And it's an honor to be entrusted with those secrets. And also it's a f***ing drag because they're like “oh, thank God, I got that off my chest.” And I'm like, “yeah, you got it on to mine.” I realized that I had felt so alone and so isolated and that was my own invention in my head. People didn't necessarily relate to his circumstances, but his struggles spoke to them.  It came as a surprise:  “I had no idea that there were so many other people like me out there and now whenever I go to a race -  not necessarily a 5K or something, but whenever you go to an ultra - and looking at the starting line, it's like, “what's up, you f***ing degenerates? You know everybody here has some awesome, horrible secret and that's what's driving you to run 100 miles, 50 miles, 50K, whatever it is, that, ‘we're here because we're not all there.'” Running is limitless, it's boundless, and that is the hippiest thing that I will say on this podcast.  Mishka describes his relationship with running in the same way that others describe their relationship with God:  “I know that running is always there, it exists constantly whether I'm there participating or not ...  it will always be there for me, it will always be available to me ... it's sort of like air, it's just everywhere, it's all around us, and we don't see itbecause it's all around us, not because it's not there.” I will fight to my dying breath to say that people who take on the burden of educating themselves through any means, it doesn't need to be university, but it needs to be something where you interrogate your own beliefs, that that's an honorable pursuit and that it does make you a better human being.  Running isn't the only thing in the air.  So is anti-intellectualism, at least in the United States, and it's an attitude that he despises. “It's hard to go to school. It's hard to get an education. It's hard to take on that challenge of learning, to say, ‘here's a thing that I don't know, that I don't understand.'” We can't go back and bring back the wisdom that we've acquired, we can't go back and leave the wisdom that we've acquired.  Knowledge, of course, comes not only from education but also from experience.  Despite the pitfalls of getting older - as Mishka says, “if you live long enough, you'll turn into the creepy old dude at the rock concert” - he wouldn't go back in time to be his younger self.  Experience has taught him the value of doing things that don't garner accolades, like making sure that his cat and dog are happy and know that he loves them, even though, as he says, “I can't brag to anybody, ‘I ranked second in my age division, competitive cat petting. I'm an ultra petter.'” I'm trying to just do little things where there's no finish line, there's no cheering spectators, there's no award, literally the only reward is in doing it.  Resources: Mishka's website Mishka's Facebook Mishka's Instagram Mishka's Twitter The Long Run Thank you to Athletic Greens, Tracksmith, and Picky Bars for sponsoring this episode. When Sasha Wolff discovered the benefits of running for mental health, she wanted to connect with others who did the same thing.  She couldn't find an existing group, so she created her own, Still I Run.  What began as a Facebook page and website is now a non-profit charity and a community of runners over 16,000 strong. “The biggest stat out there is one in five Americans will be diagnosed every single year with a mental illness.”  Even if you're not affected, the odds are that you know somebody who is.  Mental illness doesn't discriminate. “Mental illness doesn't care where you are in life,” Sasha says.  “It doesn't care how happy you are.  It just happens. It's like when you get a cold out of the blue or you break your leg unexpectedly, or you have a heart attack. You don't plan for those things, they just happen.” “Once I finally started taking that proactive approach, that's when things started to get better for me.”  When Sasha was first diagnosed with depression, she was given a prescription for Prozac and sent on her way.  That didn't work, and since then she's learned the necessity of proactively managing mental health.  She has three tools in her mental health toolbox:  running, medication, and therapy.  “I'm hoping that this conversation really explodes into something bigger because we need the support system now.” Alexi Pappas was one of the first professional athletes to discuss mental health.  Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka raised awareness further when they stepped away from competition this year.  Sasha applauds them:  “I think when you have voices like that come forward, it inspires others to come forward, which is why I've decided to be vulnerable about my own story because you hope it at least helps one other person.” “It does kind of help you feel like you're part of something larger than yourself.” The Starting Line Scholarship helps people overcome the barriers they may have to running.  “So our hope,” Sasha says, “is that by awarding this scholarship, we're giving you all the tools that you need to get started with this lifelong habit of running for mental health.” “Lead with empathy.” Sasha realizes that “it's really hard to understand mental illness because it's not something you can see. It's not something you can really understand unless you talk to someone who may have a mental health disorder.”  The best thing that you can do if you know someone with a mental illness is to be empathetic.  If you're struggling yourself, know that you're not alone. “That's what Circa 95 represents. It's to just be yourself. And it's not only us, it's you, it's everybody that wants to be down with Circa 95.” Circa 95 was born when Patty and Reph were trying to figure out how to engage more with their community.  As Patty says, “our music is really about the people, it's really about where we come from.”  The name comes from the decade, which was the golden era of hip hop, and is also a play on the numbers.   “Because for us it is our 9 to 5 to do music, art, and culture. This is our lifestyle every day.  Everywhere we go, we are Circa 95. We want to make sure that young people don't all of a sudden have to put a suit and tie on and change who they are, that they are accepted for who they are wherever they walk into a room.” “We don't want to leave this world with an empty backpack.” Society tells us that if we have a passion, we have to focus on it to the exclusion of our other interests.  Patty and Reph disagree.  “We don't have to compartmentalize ourselves as human beings,” Patty says.  “We're all born with a backpack that's empty, but we want to fill it with the skills and the things that we love that carry us through our lives.” “We planted those seeds and now look, boom, it's like we have a full garden.” Running crews have played an important role in building community in city neighborhoods.  In New York, even when they couldn't run together during the pandemic, members asked themselves, “How can we support each other? How can we continue building throughout the boroughs? And that's still going on to this day, we're still connecting with each other, we're still supporting each other, and we're showing up for each other.”  It took time, but the city is filled with running crews now.  “There's a little Bolt in every neighborhood, Mo Farah everywhere, there's a Sha'Carri in every block.” There's so much untapped potential in many neighborhoods, and Patty and Reph want to help kids realize their talent.  “We want to get the kids off the block that's like chilling on the corner. Like those are the kids that we want running.”  They've succeeded; some of the kids who started running with them have gone on to complete marathons. “You know for Lena Horne to have lived there, Paul Robeson, you know what I mean? Running by those buildings where they would have come out of, it's like we are the artists now, but they were the artists of that time." Running enables you to see the spaces around you in a new light.  For Reph and Patty, it's been a way to learn about landmarks that are important to them as people of color.  It's a way to connect with your neighborhood's history, and by extension, your own.    “Try to say ‘yes' more to the things that you're scared of, try to say ‘yes' more to the things that make you nervous, and get into those feelings and work them out and challenge them.” You have to be open to opportunities, willing to connect in different ways, and believe that you have everything that you need to succeed.   “Imagine that the world is conspiring to make everything happen that you want, right?  That the world is on your side, that you have everything in your disposal even though you might not think so.”  “Running reminds me every day that I'm in my own race, that I'm in my own pace and I do not have to chase anyone. I only have to chase me.” Comparing yourself to others is usually a recipe for failure.  As a runner, it can mean being injured when you push yourself too hard trying to keep up with someone else, or being angry with yourself for not being “fast enough” or “good enough.”  You have to let go of your ego, and remember that “they're just running their race and you have to run your own.” “We're trying to keep it real as much as possible and real with ourselves, real with the world around us, real with Tracksmith, with running communities.  It's all real and that's what we strive for, reality. The good, the bad, everything in between.” Resources: Circa 95's website Circa 95's Instagram Patty's Instagram Reph's Instagram Circa 95's Facebook Thank you to Athletic Greens, goodr, and Picky Bars for sponsoring this episode. Joining us live from Beacon, New York last weekend was Mary Cain. We gathered at Tracksmith's Outpost in Beacon, where they're set up for the summer. After a trail run up Mount Beacon on Sunday, we had a BBQ in the back yard of the Outpost and got to listen to Tina and Mary have this conversation.    In this conversation with Mary, we go beyond touching on her Nike Oregon Project experience and her New York Time Article, I was the Fastest Girl in America Until I joined Nike. We get to learn from Mary about how she found a new relationship with running and how we can all be a little gentler on ourselves. We hear about her new non-profit, Atlalanta NYC that she's launching, while working with Tracksmith and the New York Road Runners. We hear Mary's wise wisdom on life, the future of running, and being yourself.      In this episode we cover… Atlalanta NYC, Mary's latest creation– the first professional team in New York City. It's the first of it's kind doing community service work within the broader New York City area,  serving as mentors to younger female girls and  bringing on a team of professional women to help make the sport a better place for everybody.  Outcome-based models of success versus growth-based models of success. Thinking about our lives and running with a growth mindset instead of being attached to an outcome allows us to blossom as individuals.  On the importance of being okay with change. “It's okay for things to change with time. We're all learning, we're all growing in, our society is changing with time. Change is a really beautiful and  positive thing and growth should never be treated as a dangerous thing.” Her analogy of pretending to run with an egg in your hand will help you feel more relaxed and help you be a better runner. The more you hold on tight and clench your fist, the more likely you're going to break and burn out early. She shares the key is to relax and hold it gently for the majority of your race, then on the last 400 meters you can drop the egg and finish strong.    Mary's interview was so special in that it was such an intimate atmosphere for a live podcast and she really embodies what Running for Real stands for, being real and being yourself.    Resources:  Mary Cain IG   Atlalanta NYC   Rich Roll and Mary Cain   Thank you to Tracksmith, Picky Bars, and Beam for sponsoring this episode.   Tracksmith is a Boston based running clothing company that truly cares about the quality and care of their running clothes.   When it comes to finding synergy between running and our core selves, Kriste Peoples has found it. As a meditation and mindfulness teacher, running coach, avid trail runner, and outdoor guide, Kriste helps us all use running as a tool to feel more present in the hustle and bustle of life.    Kriste is a leader in inspiring women to pursue adventure in the outdoors while maintaining a grounding presence within themselves.   “When we're running we're invited to pay attention to what's going on in your body and opens us up to deeper connections with the people we are with. It also allows us to come back more relaxed and refreshed to be better people in our relationships at home and have more compassion for others.” –Kriste Peoples    In this episode we cover… Exploring the parallels between our running practice and meditation practice.  How you can cut through the noise and narrow down the core of what mindful running means to you.  Redefining what meditation looks like for you. It doesn't have to be a solitary space or rock garden. It can be those 5 breaths you take when you feel flustered while heading out the door with a mug in one hand, a child in the other, your tote bag on your shoulder and shoes in the other arm.  “You can catch yourself in a moment. Just breathe five seconds now. You would be very hard pressed not to have five seconds in your day. If you don't have five seconds, you've got bigger problems than not being able to meditate.” We need connection in America right now. Running has the power to heal and bring a healing presence to those who are united by it.  The ways we can look back at our lives and reframe moments and redefine what they mean to us.    Resources:   Kriste's Website   Instagram @KristePeoples   Thank you to Athletic Greens, Picky Bars, and Tracksmith for sponsoring this episode.   Athletic Greens is a simple and easy way to get 75 vitamins, minerals, and whole food source ingredients. Sika Henry is proof that we can speak our goals into existence. If there’s anyone who exemplifies persistence and determination, it’s Sika. After years of training, a serious bike, crash, and even a pandemic, in May 2021 Sika became the first U.S. Black Female Professional Triathlete.  In this episode, Sika shares how she started as a college walk-on, to the workaholic life in New York City, to then come back to sports as a marathoner, and now a triathlete.     “I believe in speaking things into existence. No matter how crazy it sounds, just put it out there. The worst that can happen is it doesn't happen. And then so what, even if you feel embarrassed by it, it’s like, who cares? At least you had the guts to attempt it and go after it.” –Sika Henry   In this episode we cover… Sika’s childhood and early life as an athlete, she shares how she didn’t peak until a few years into college but that she never quit on her dreams.  The power of cross training swimming and biking have had on her running abilities. The intensity of triathlon as a sport. She shares that even “recovery days” entail swimming and an easy run. It’s intense weeks and weeks of training.  Sika opens up about her serious bike crash that landed her in the hospital and put a pause on her dreams of becoming a professional triathlete.  It was with encouragement that she got back on her feet. She knew becoming pro would be a huge step in Triathlon for her to be an example for younger generations and represent inclusivity and diversity in the sport that only until last month didn’t have a black woman as a professional athlete in the United States.  She shares that only 0.5% of the sport is made up of Black people and that 64% of Blacks lack basic swimming skills. Sika shares the importance of supporting organizations that are making strides in aquatics and swimming accessibility. “Running has been a big factor in my life. Running made me start my own business, I met my wife because of running—that's how I ended up here. So running has always been a big factor in my life. I think that's why I still enjoy running at my age versus just being done with it. I know so many guys who were really fast and they're like, ‘I'm done, I don't wanna run anymore. Why are you still running?' [It's because] I still love it—it has become part of me.” I first met Thomas Reiss at the Leadville 100 back in 2017 when he was crewing and pacing for our mutual friend, Brett Rivers, who I was coaching at the time. I knew Thomas as a veteran ultrarunner who had experienced some success in the sport but also that he was a badass designer whose logo and branding work I was familiar with and admired. I've been wanting to have a long conversation with him ever since and this one did not disappoint. Thomas, who is 53 years old, is a husband and dad to two teenage boys who is still getting after it on the road, track, and trails from the mile to ultramarathon distances. Like me, he loves it all. In 2018, he broke the American record for 50-54 year olds in the 50K on the track, running 3:39:26. Just last December he broke 5 minutes for the mile and he's got his eye on some age-group records and national titles. Basically, I want to be Thomas when I grow up. Originally from Germany, running first came into Thomas' life when he was a young kid. He ran his first marathon at the age of 22 and his involvement in the sport has only snowballed from there. In this conversation, we talked about growing up in Germany and playing in punk bands during his teen years, and how that experience reminds him of some of the growth we're seeing in ultrarunning today. He told me about starting a running magazine back in Germany, how his relationship with running has evolved over the years, and what keeps him motivated and excited as he approaches his mid-50s. We also talked about competitiveness, creativity, why brands in running should do a better job of highlighting Masters runners, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by: — BOA. This episode is like eavesdropping on some friends’s conversation– we welcome Sabrina Little and Sara Mahoney, two of Tina’s close friends. We have a great dynamic between Sara, a professor of exercise physiology and researcher of nutrition and ultra-endurance performance. We also have Sabrina who is a professional ultra runner for Hoka, a philosophy professor and a mom to a 11-month-old. We loved getting to learn about each how each of these worlds– one more scientific and one more philosophical– are intertwined with running.    In this episode we cover…  How Sabrina’s trade of reading things that people have read for hundreds of years helps her ask the questions about what it means to be human. These deep questions we often don’t pause to ask, unless we’re maybe on the trail or running. Sara shares about FKT’s (Fastest Known Times) and how they differentiate from Strava segments which are smaler sections. She says FKTs can be created more of an experience and with more formality. On mental toughness...Sabrina shares that she has researched and written about this topic.  “Oftentimes we hear these phrases like, ‘no pain, no gain,’ or ‘pain is weakness leaving the body.’ It’s indifferent to the kinds of pain that we're talking about. So if we're talking about injury, then no pain no gain is just imprudent, and it's poor stewardship of your body. If we're talking about pain in the way that people often describe discomfort, then that's a kind of edifying pain, but I guess it takes a bit of prudence or experience to know the difference.”  On knowing your limits…Sara shares, “You don't have to like you don't have to take everything so seriously. And be yeah like you know as you said, it's okay to do it on occasion for like an experience where you're finding your limits but you don't have to do it three times a week every week.” See running as a celebration, not as a test to see if you’re good enough or worthy enough.  We will always good days and bad days, but the important think is to keep working on it over time and move the needle closer to a place of self-love.  If you see others doing it, it tells your brain it’s possible you can do it too.    Resources: Sara Mahoney IG    Sabrina Little IG   Fastest Known Time Website     Thank you to Momentous, Athletic Greens, and Picky Bars for sponsoring this episode.   Being a tough year with additional stresses on top of an already overwhelming situation means sleep can often be lost...but it is the one thing that we know would help us. “What we're doing, it's for the culture. It's not ultimately about trying to get money. We want to push the track and field culture forward. We want it to be more entertaining, we want it to be more fun. We're doing this for the athletes. And with both of us being athletes before, we understand those struggles and, I don't know, I'm really big on believing that track and field is a stage, it's an amazing sport, but the culture needs to be continually developed and advanced so we can showcase that—and that's the mission, it's something that's not about getting subscriptions or anything. We're really genuine and just want to push the culture forward and make track more of a mainstream sport.” Aaron and Joshua Potts are the guys behind The Running Report, a media outlet produced “for culture and by the culture.” They also co-host the 2 Black Runners podcast, where each week they recap the most recent running news, host insightful interviews with athletes from across all disciplines of track and field, and offer up their perspective on the running world as two black runners in the sport. They first came across my radar a few months ago when they interviewed one of my earliest running heroes, Michael Johnson, and I've been following their work ever since. In this conversation, we got into their recent broadcast work at The KC Qualifier put on by Trials of Miles Racing and Citius Mag. They told me how The Running Report and 2 Black Runners came to be, what they saw missing from the way the sport was being broadcast and covered, and what changes they'd still like to see as it relates to how track and field is packaged and presented. We also talked about the importance of culture and what they mean when they use that word, how they see The Running Report and 2 Black Runners evolving in the future, and a lot more. Leading up to Mother's Day, I'm chatting with six extraordinary women. Some moms. Some not. But, each has a story to tell, forever shaped by the women that came before them. Ten years. That's how long Steph Bruce has been chasing her Olympic dreams. During that time, she had two sons within a 15-month period (not planned), has dealt with injuries, launched a successful business (what's up, Picky Bars), and so much more. “How do I find a group to train with? I don't feel comfortable doing this alone, do you know any, any Latino groups?” These are the questions Maria Solis Belizaire asked when she realized she wanted to run a marathon but didn’t know where to start. Today, she’s the founder of two organizations, Latinos Run and Latinas Run which support over 25,000 runners across the USA in cities including New York, Phoenix, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, and more. Latinos Run is a global movement bringing together Latinos through running and fitness to lead healthier lives and inclusive running spaces. Latinos Run and Latinas Run celebrate the multicultural communities that make up Latin countries and create welcoming atmospheres for all runners no matter where you’re from or what pace you go.  “It's not about just the Latino community or the Black community. We need everybody to kind of lift each other up. So we always welcome everybody. We have a lot of people who are not Latino within our running group and we are all for it. We welcome everybody.” –Maria Solis Belizaire    In this episode we cover… Maria’s story of growing up with running as part of her life but not finding an inclusive community or guidance as a kid resulted in her quitting the sport. Fast forward and she turned this obstacle into an opportunity to start her own inclusive organization, Latinos Run, which today supports over 25,000 runners of all different cultures, not just Latinos. The incredible variety of cultures within the Latino community. “You have people from Central America, South America, the islands like Puerto Rico. It’s an extremely mixed and diverse community. And even within that community, you can see people from Argentina who are maybe typically more white than those from Dominican Republic who might be more culturally mixed with Indigenous or African roots. So we are very, very different.” Maria shares about growing up in South Florida being surrounded by mostly Cubans and it wasn’t until she got to New York that she started learning on her own and asking what Hispanic means, what Latino means, why some Hispanic or Latino countries have more African roots, others more Indigenous, and others more white.  Faces and paces. How being inclusive in running doesn’t only mean creating inclusive spaces for people of all cultures, but all paces too. Of not leaving anyone behind no matter if they’re running a 15 or 18 minute pace or if they have a disability. She shares the story of a man who finished a 5K with a walker and cried at the end because he felt so supported. How she’s constantly up against misconceptions from the Latino community itself that Latinos are fat and Latinos don’t run so they don't belong in the sport. When in reality Latinos have been running for thousands of years.  Running with Latinos Run sometimes becomes like a party. Everyone’s having a great time and many families show up, not just individuals. It’s a very welcoming atmosphere.  The story of Maria’s father who for the majority of his life has run on his treadmill every day, but doesn’t feel safe running outside even in his own neighborhood so he won’t attend races. Latinos account for one of the largest growing groups in the country, making up 52% of the US population growth(2019) yet running and health brands are leaving them out despite Latinos growing purchasing power. They also make up minimal percentages of road races and even less in trail races.  There is a positive shift happening where the Latino community is becoming healthier and we’re seeing a change within the general running community being more inclusive.    Resources: Maria Solis Belizaire Instagram Latinos Run Latinas Run   Thank you to Momentous, Picky Bars, and Beam for sponsoring this episode.   Being a tough year with additional stresses on top of an already overwhelming situation means sleep can often be lost...but it is the one thing that we know would help us. “I don't shy away from the hard stuff anymore. I know I enjoy hard things from a training perspective, [and] like super-challenging races, but that also goes emotionally—I can't expect to be a better person unless I can work through those things as well, so I'm happy to talk about hard subjects.” Hillary Allen is a professional athlete, coach, teacher, and author of the new book, Out and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds. She's a returning guest to the show—be sure to check out her first appearance back on Episode 49 if you haven't already—and she's just one of my favorite people to talk to in general. In this conversation, we talked about her book, which was recently released. She told me about how it came to be, what she's learned from revisiting it recently while she's been recovering from foot surgery, and how writing became a cathartic exercise for her in recent years. We also talked about her stubborn and independent streaks, why asking for help is challenging for her, the importance of cultivating and leaning into your community, and a lot more. When you have a talent, a gift, or awards to your name for a sport, it is easy to rely on those to get things in life. Of course, you work hard, but you also are boosted with constant praise and recognition for what you can do.   When that sport is removed by personal choice or external force, there is a reckoning that happens. Who am I? What do I do now? Do I even matter anymore?   I've had few guests on the podcast who understand that experience similar to mine. I believe that most can relate to the feeling of having to back off from something you love or even step away entirely, which is crushing but voluntarily choosing to when you could keep going to work on a business, that can be hard to admit. While no one is judging you, it can feel like you are wasting your talent, that people are going to be disappointed in you.   And our guest today knows that all too well. Jesse Thomas is a former professional triathlete, CEO of Picky Bars, podcast host, as well as father to Zadie and Jude and husband to Lauren Fleshman.   We talked about struggling to feel like you are enough, figuring out your identities, and how being an athlete of any kind(and I mean athlete in the sense of anyone who participates, not professional) can help make you a better person and better at what you do outside of your sport. How We Define Ourselves While Jesse is well known as a former professional triathlete, entrepreneur, and podcast host with his wife Lauren, he shares that the largest part of how he defines himself personally is just his family. The most important thing to him is being a great dad.    “Priorities ebb and flow. We have specific times in our lives where we have the best chance or ability to achieve a specific goal that is finite. And in order to put time into that, you do need to sacrifice other things for a little while,” he shares.   “As long as you're communicative about the length and duration and depth of that sacrifice, then you can often get through it.” Primary Parent During Jesse’s time focusing on racing and Picky Bars, Lauren was the primary parent, and now they’ve switched. With Lauren working on a big project, Jesse is the primary parent.    “We certainly hope that we’re teaching them lessons about self-care and the pursuit of things that bring you joy and hopefully make an impact in the world.” “Retirement” Writing a blog and doing a project with Triathlete Magazine made Jesse realize the emotion he was carrying in the decision to stop racing professionally. “I'm super thankful for everything, but I'm gonna move on to the next phase of my life,” Jesse said. “It felt really good. It felt it was a relief. Like I can now fully pivot into the next phase of my life, which was around becoming a “professional” “unprofessional” CEO for Picky Bars as the majority of my focus.” Confidence is key Confidence is the tool Jesse says he learned from racing and it transcended into life with family and with running Picky Bars. Confidence that it’s going to work out regardless of the challenge you face. As athletes, we ride such roller coasters with injuries, training, and races. But that teaches you a lot about business, especially when it comes to identifying what you can and can’t, and believing everything will work out in the end.  Picky Bars Picky Bars is a reflection of Jesse, Lauren, and Stephanie, the founders. It’s a brand that promotes positive messages and in doing things around healthy positive body image, sustainable relationships with food, and inclusion.    "What what we want to do now is build it too, to a place where it's making a super positive impact on all of our communities with, great product, great messaging, great givebacks, and making it an amazing place to work. “      Resources Jesse Instagram  Picky Bars Website Picky Club  Work, Play, Love podcast  Triathlete Magazine Article  Lauren Fleshman on Running for Real    Thank you to my wonderful sponsor Tracksmith, Athletic Greens, and Momentous for sponsoring this episode of the Running for Real Podcast.
