Dive into the dazzling world of Jay Jackson, also known as Laganja Estranja, where the art of dance meets the boldness of drag, creating a spectacle of talent and transformation. In this episode, host John Corella and the renowned drag queen and choreographer explore a myriad of topics, from dance and television to the vital intersection of LGBTQ issues within the dance world. Laganja opens up about her extensive dance background, sharing insights from her early ballet classes to her evolution into an international performer. She discusses her affinity for contemporary dance and how her dance competition background has uniquely shaped her choreography, blending various styles and expressions. The conversation also delves into the significant role of dance in the drag community and its ongoing evolution. Laganja pays homage to influential figures in her career, such as her drag mother, Alyssa Edwards, and Candis Cayne, and discusses her recent choreography projects, including collaborations with Lady Camden and Trixie and Katya. A central theme of the episode is the importance of representation and inclusion in the dance industry, especially for the transgender community. Laganja speaks passionately about the need for transgender individuals to be in leadership positions, advocating for their community. She candidly shares her experiences and challenges as a transgender performer, shedding light on the industry's landscape. This episode provides an insightful look into Laganja Estranja's multifaceted career as a dancer, choreographer, and drag queen, highlighting the transformative power of dance in the LGBTQ+ community and the significance of embracing one's true identity in the arts. Quotes “I think definitely now that newer generations are becoming drag queens, there's definitely a crossover. You know, I used to really be the only like dancing queen in L.A. that had background dancers that were choreographed. You know, which was so crazy to me, because now you see that in L.A. all the time. But I think over the years, drag has become more dance centric and more focused on the tricks that you can do on stage, as opposed to just the look or the lip sync of it all.” (26:04 | Jay Jackson) “Respect in general is something that my parents instilled in me at a very young age. Both my parents were high school counselors for 30 plus years and so they raised me to be very in touch with my emotions and in touch with other's emotions.” (29:41 | Jay Jackson) “I want to respect those that have helped me become successful. So even though I never really took voguing classes before Drag Race or was in the ballroom community, I wouldn't have had such an outlandish appeal on the TV show if it hadn't been for all those that came before me. That's why when I went back for All-Star 6, I wanted to pay ode or paid homage to Tandy Amon-Dupree, who was known for flying out from the ceiling into a split. And so again, anytime people bring up that entrance, I always try to say her name because What I truly believe is even though those people may have never placed their hands on me, their art, their lineage, what they left has inspired me to be the artist I am today.” (30:23 | Jay Jackson) I worked with Meryl Streep once. And I could visibly see her nervous. I used to think, Oh, if you're the people that are the best in their art, they never get nervous. So I would feel kind of shame over my nerves. And so I always tell the kids that when they feel nervous, that it's because you care. Even the greats. (35:51 | John) “So much of, you know, who I am, my character, everything, it comes from her [Alyssa Edwards]. I mean, she's my drag mother.” (41:57 | Jay Jackson) Links Dance Dance Dad with John Corella on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dancedadwithjohncorella/ John on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/john_corella/ Laganja on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/laganjaestranja Laganja on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@LaganjaEstranja Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Today we are star struck for all the wrong reasons with esteemed guest Jeff Hiller. But it isn't just Jeff's MTV-based pranking past that causes controversy, but also the fact that brass instruments are still being spread through school music departments all across this great nation. That's right, blowing into a horn may seem gay, but it's actually not and we will explain why. Plus, George pushes the boundaries of how vague one can be with a description, Sam has his interview skills tested, and Jeff becomes the first guest to be forced to plug their projects.

The Green Repeal - A Guide to Cannabis Marketing & Advertising
There's no one-size-fits-all career, especially in the world of cannabis. However, there's one thing we've learned in our conversations with industry insiders and talented people building incredible companies: there's a long way to go before the stigmas around stoner culture, slacking off, and being lazy are gone for good. Jay Jackson, aka Laganja Estranja, is living an unconventional career in cannabis - and is as far from a slacker as you could imagine. Laganja is a world-renowned female illusionist, choreographer, musician, cannabis advocate, and LGBTQ+ icon. You may have seen her on season 6 of RuPaul's Drag Race, Heidi Klum's Queen of Drag Race, and So You Think You Can Dance. She also graced the cover of New York Magazine's The Most Powerful Drag Queens in America issue, and has performed at events and festivals all over the world. Today, you'll hear the story of how an injury and successful treatment convinced Laganja to make cannabis her platform, what brands are doing right (and wrong) in trying to reach wider audiences, and what she's doing to advocate for both cannabis and the LGBTQ+ community in an utterly unique way. KEY TAKEAWAYS How a serious injury sustained as a dancer led Laganja to medical cannabis. How Laganja built a platform designed to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. What it means to Laganja to be drag's reigning cannabis ambassador - and why she still sees the mainstream cannabis industry as not open to the queer community. Why it's everyone's responsibility to be critical when it comes to their spending - and what cannabis companies can do to nurture an authentic, inclusive culture and message. Why Laganja sees full legalization as at least four or five years away, no matter what happens this election. From the people you’d expect like Snoop Dogg or Cheech and Chong, to the more surprising names like Martha Stewart or the famously-sober Gene Simmons, there are a lot of famous people trying to sell us cannabis-related products right now. But is there actually any substance to that star-power? How do we know who is promoting good products, and who is just in it for the money? And are social media channels really a sustainable way to brand marijuana? This episode Brit talks about celebrities in cannabis with Dallas-born drag queen, choreographer, performer, medical marijuana advocate, and social media Influencer; Jay Jackson, better known as Laganja Estranja. Later in the episode, Avital Norman-Nathman, the writer behind Different Leaf's feature article on Laganja and other celebrities in cannabis, also joins the conversation.Find out more about Different Leaf the magazine at DifferentLeaf.com, and follow us on social media @Different_Leaf and @BritTheBritish

For those of you who may not know, Laganja Estranga or Jay Evan Jackson is an American choreographer and drag queen based in Los Angeles, California. I personally never watched more than season 1 of Rue Paul's Drag Race, but I did know of Laganja from I guess word of mouth. Nevertheless, I was very excited to have her tell her story on the show. As with any guest who comes on LGBT Stories that has some sort of notoriety or fame, I'm not looking for stories of glitz and glam. I want the guest to go to a more intimate place with us. I love it when the guest finishes up their stories and tell me how "that was the best thing they have ever done" for themselves. There is something very powerful about sharing our true authentic self with others! I am blessed to be able to provide a space where my guest can experience this. Ok, back to Laganja! She starts her story off by telling us about the boy who started it all, little Jay. From sports to ballet as a young kid, to preforming drag professionally, releasing new music this year, stepping away from all things Drag Race, and struggling with alcoholism, Jay, or, Laganja is a force to be reckoned with!

When it comes to comedy, some queens do stand-up...and some melt down. This week we recap "Drag Queens of Comedy," most well-known for Laganja Estranja's bizarre ode to stoner realness, Trinity truly overcoming her saboteur and Bianca firmly cementing her win this season. Laganja infamously loses her shit (and her nail) in the Gold Bar, which inspired us to remember other RPDR meltdowns from seasons past.
