We've all been there, crying in our cars and feeling alone and insignificant. But how many of us can say that because of that pivotal moment, we were inspired to create social change by Stepping Out of Line? Chelsie Hill, founder of the Rollettes, motivational speaker, author, creator, mother to Jaelyn Bloomfield, serial entrepreneur, and professional dancer is every woman times ten. When she realized that there wasn't a seat for her in the dance world, she rolled in and created her own dance movement. One of her many passions is her creation, the Rollettes, and Chelsie has made it her mission to change the world by showing that all are welcome in the dance world and that the notion of inclusivity matters. She grew up as a dancer and her entrepreneurial drive and competitive nature were always something that was ingrained in her DNA, and that, combined with her ability to roll with the punches, inspires her daily to roll out of line.  Consider donating to the Rollettes Experience's GoFundMe to be a part of this inclusive dance movement by clicking here.

As I reminisce about my own ballet slippers scuffing the floor during Sunday school, I can't help but feel a kinship with the young protagonist of "Dance Like Starlight: One Ballerina's Dream." In a heartfelt narrative that stretches from the scuffed floors of a dance studio to the grand stages of the Metropolitan Opera House, we follow the journey of an African American girl in the 1950s who dares to dream of becoming a prima ballerina, just like the trailblazing Janet Collins. This episode is steeped in the wisdom of knowing that hope is more than just wishing; it's the labor of dreams bound by determination and grace. There's a personal thread throughout this conversation, as I share how my own path in dance has informed my perspective on the arts and the power of representation. With a twirl and a leap, we then shift the focus to educators and how literature like Kristie Dempsey's enchanting tale can be woven into a curriculum that fosters young dreamers. I invite you to consider how stories can inspire students to elevate their aspirations from the "floor of their hearts" to the reality of their lives. This episode wraps up with an expression of gratitude for your company in our multicultural educational journey and a hint at the diverse topics awaiting us in the wings. So, lace up your own metaphorical ballet shoes and join me in this celebration of hope, hard work, and the dance of dreams. COME SAY Hey!! It was a mystery: two dancers—one white, one Black—captured on stage in 1959 in a photograph found in a museum archive. Who were they? But a search for their identity uncovers much more: a forgotten history of art and integration. When the pursuit of modern ideals promised a better world, and the pursuit of art promised personal freedom. The farther from the New York spotlight, the better. #48:  When Payton Kennedy (she/her) joined the SHE RECOVERS community, she found a space of acceptance, where women feel less alone in recovery.  She found a community that accepts the differences in each person's unique path, and recognizes the connective threads of recovery and healing.  We discuss these topics and more: How Payton revived her love of dancing and movement- activities she didn't know if she could do in sobriety- and how when she “danced like there was no tomorrow” she found cathartic expression and deeper connection, Her continuous growth and understanding of recovery organizations: learning that many pathways to recovery have privilege attached, The importance of making recovery more inclusive, The many ways her recovery journey has shifted over the years through exploration of what she loves (and what she doesn't!)… mirroring the ways we allow ourselves to change and grow in life, The courage it takes to reach out your hand and say “please help me.”   Payton's loving reassurance that someone will be there to take your hand in recovery, The exciting news that SHE RECOVERS 2023 is coming to Chicago September 29-October1, to highlight and celebrate strength, diversity, inclusion, and innovation…by women for women and non-binary individuals who identify with women's communities.  Check the link below to get your tickets!  Payton Kennedy is the Creator & Trainer of SHE RECOVERS Dance, a Life & Recovery Coach, Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher and Dance Facilitator, and an Events Lead for SHE RECOVERS Foundation. SHE RECOVERS is a non-profit movement dedicated to redefining recovery, inspiring hope, ending stigma and empowering women in or seeking recovery to increase their recovery capital, heal themselves and help other women to do the same.  Connect with SHE RECOVERS: Instagram: @She_Recovers Learn more about the SHE RECOVERS Foundation: www.sherecovers.org Check out SHE RECOVERS 2023 Chicago event: https://sherecovers.org/chicago-event/  Connect with Payton: Instagram: @Expand.Beyond.Recovery Website: www.paytonkennedy.com  Join the Phoenix community & sign up for classes with a single click by downloading The Phoenix App! I cannot talk about AJ Irving's soon-to-be-released (May, 2023) book 'The Wishing Flower' without getting emotional. It is groundbreaking, beautiful, and a must-buy for school libraries. We talk about the power of books, the power of groups ensuring the truth always has a home in classrooms, and what we can do to collaboratively ask for more books like this one. About the Author: A.J. Irving grew up in Boise, Idaho, writing stories and daydreaming about becoming an author. Now, she writes picture books and poetry beneath an old elm tree in Salt Lake City. A.J. reads kidlit every day and dances every chance she gets. She is the author of Dance Like a Leaf (Barefoot Books, 2020) and The Wishing Flower (Knopf BFYR, May 30, 2023). As a children's author and former bookmobile librarian, A.J. is passionate about inspiring kids to love books. When she's not reading, writing, or dancing, she enjoys exploring Utah with her husband, two children, and their English bulldog. A.J. received a B.A. in journalism and women's and gender studies from the University of Oregon. She is represented by Jordan Hamessley of New Leaf Literary. Hilary McGrady, the Director General of the National Trust, one of Britain's biggest heritage organisations and the custodian of hundreds of our finest castles, great houses and beaches and countryside. They'll be discussing some of the recent controversies that've left to criticisms that it's become too politicised in recent years. Critics say that in its pursuit of becoming more accessible to more people it's fallen short of its original remit to acquire and preserve Britain's heritage. After four years in the job, Emma Barnett speaks to Hilary about what she sees as her greatest achievements to date and her vision for the National Trust in the future. Thursday will see the first ever national strike action in the Royal College of Nursing's 106-year-old history. This comes after talks between the nursing union and the government dramatically collapsed last night. We hear from Pat Cullen the General Secretary and Chief Executive of the RCN. With Christmas party season in full swing for the first time in three years, many of us will be taking to the dancefloor. But how often do we truly get to dance like no one is watching? As we get older, do the opportunities become more scarce, and the internal shame more inhibiting? What are the songs - and who are the dance partners - which force us onto the floor? Emma Barnett is joined by the queen of the kitchen disco herself, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and comedian Ania Magliano to discuss the joy of losing yourself on the dancefloor. Former F1 driver David Coulthard on why he's determined that women are not forgotten when it comes to Formula 1. Presenter Emma Barnett Producer Beverley Purcell Photo Credit. John Millar.
