But why is diet culture so pervasive and what, if anything, we can do about it? Clemmie and Alex cover a lot in this episode: diet culture, body image, how depressing normalised ‘disordered eating' is - and how we can be looking for ways to move on from it towards of a place of greater self acceptance. The conversation also covers Nikki Grahame's tragic recent death by anorexia. Specifically what it teaches us about this hugely misrepresented illness. In this episode, we speak to Laura Thomas who loves to call BS when she sees nutrition misinformation being spread! She did her undergrad nutrition degree in Health Sciences at the University of Aberdeen before heading across the pond to do her PhD in Nutrition at Texas A&M University. On a personal note, Laura became a vegetarian at 10 years old and later a vegan when she was a student. However, she bases her own nutrition approach on ethics and evidence, not fear-mongering and pseudoscience. We dedicate a huge section of this podcast to discussing many of the myths that surround the vegan diet. Laura gives us an incredibly honest review and evidence-based of the controversial Netflix film, “What the Health”. In our discussion, she exposes how the filmmakers used some dodgey science and cherry-picked data to support some of their outrageous claims. We also touch upon what it means to eat intuitively and what’s right for your body, rather than banning foods and trying a one size fits all FAD diet.
