20 years ago, Bo Burlingham gave a name to a feeling a lot of business owners had struggled to articulate. In his book Small Giants, Bo profiled companies that had chosen not to chase growth at all costs. Most were bootstrapped, owner-operated businesses that cared less about getting big than about building something enduring, meaningful, and excellent. They weren't anti-growth. They just wanted growth to be intentional. And for many owners who read the book, the reaction was immediate: “I thought I was the only one who felt this way.” Out of that recognition grew a community—and eventually an organization—led in large part by Paul Spiegelman, whose own company embodied the Small Giants philosophy. With Bo's encouragement, Paul launched the Small Giants organization 15 years ago to connect owners trying to build great companies without sacrificing culture, independence, or quality of life.At our recent 21 Hats Live gathering in Cincinnati, we explored where that movement goes next in a Brainstorm session with Jean Moncrieff, who took over leadership of the Small Giants organization last year. Jean—who's from South Africa, lives in Zurich, but is moving to the U.S.—brings both momentum and candor to the role. He recently led his first Small Giants Summit in Detroit, which attendees—including me—praised for its renewed energy and sense of purpose. He's also the author of a terrific new book, Finding Freedom: The Business Owner's Guide to Building a Valuable Company and a Meaningful Life. But as you'll hear, Jean recognizes there are challenges ahead. What exactly is Small Giants today? Who is it for? What makes it different from the many other organizations competing for the attention of business owners? Does it need a more formal set of principles—or even an operating system—to help companies put its philosophy into practice? Can it stay true to its founding mission while also attracting businesses large enough to support its events and programs? Ultimately, the conversation arrives at a tension at the heart of the enterprise: Can the Small Giants organization itself become a sustainable, profitable business without losing the values it was created to protect? In other words, can Small Giants become a true small giant?Show Notes:The organizations discussed in this episode include: The Great Game of Business, the Tugboat Institute, and EOS Worldwide. The books discussed in this episode include: Finding Freedom by Jean Moncrieff, Small Giants by Bo Burlingham, Another Way by Dave Whorton with Bo Burlingham, The Great Game of Business by Jack Stack and Bo Burlingham, The Power of Mattering by Zach Mercurio, and Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. The businesses discussed in this episode include: Smiley Technologies, ITR Economics, Zingerman's Community of Businesses, Text-Em-All, Tasty Catering, Venturity, ImageOne, and Atomic Object.

I'm making the case that high volume is not the only legitimate shape of a successful practice, and that the framing saying otherwise is doing real damage to this profession.I introduce the concept I've been calling "scale down to scale up": narrowing your focus, building specialized programs around specific outcomes, and growing your revenue without growing your patient load. What do you do when the cost of staying healthy begins to strain the family budget? For many households, health care has become one of the biggest financial pressures they face. Groceries, utilities, and everyday expenses are already stretching families thin. But medical costs often feel like they are in a category of their own. Even when traditional coverage feels out of reach, families are not without options. That's why Lauren Gajdek, Senior Director of External Affairs at Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM), joined the show today to discuss medical cost sharing, how it works, and why more families are taking a closer look. The Pressure Families Are Feeling Many families are still dealing with the effects of higher prices across the board. While inflation may have cooled in some areas, that does not mean prices have returned to their previous levels. Groceries, utilities, housing, and other essentials still cost more than they did before, leaving many households with less room in their monthly budgets. Health care adds another layer of pressure. Employer-sponsored family health insurance can now cost thousands of dollars each year when accounting for both employer and employee contributions. Marketplace plans can also be expensive, especially for those who do not qualify for subsidies. Behind those rising premiums are the increasing costs of hospitals, medications, and other medical services. For families trying to manage their resources wisely, those numbers can feel overwhelming. What Options Are Available? When traditional health insurance becomes too expensive, families may begin looking for alternatives. One option is COBRA, which allows someone who has lost employer-sponsored coverage to keep the same plan for a time. But COBRA is often very expensive because the individual is typically responsible for the full cost of the plan without employer assistance. Another option is the health insurance marketplace at Healthcare.gov. For those who qualify for subsidies, this may provide some relief. But without subsidies, marketplace plans may still be difficult to afford. A third option is medical cost-sharing through an organization such as Christian Healthcare Ministries. CHM is not insurance. Instead, it is a community of believers who voluntarily come together to help share one another's eligible medical expenses. How Medical Cost-Sharing Works Most people are familiar with the traditional insurance model: premiums, deductibles, provider networks, and claims. Medical cost sharing operates differently. With Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM), members receive medical care from their provider and then work with that provider to receive the bill directly. The member submits the bill to CHM, and eligible medical costs are shared or reimbursed in accordance with the program guidelines. CHM describes this as “assurance” rather than insurance. Members are supported not only financially but also spiritually by a community of believers committed to helping one another. Christian Healthcare Ministries has been serving members for more than 40 years and has shared more than $13 billion in medical costs. What Does It Cost? CHM offers several programs designed to fit different household needs and budgets. Their Gold program is $299 per unit per month. Silver is $169 per unit per month, Bronze is $115 per unit per month, and CHM also offers a senior program for $119 per unit per month. Costs are based on household size and the number of participating members. Dependent children can participate as one unit, and no family pays for more than three units. For some families, that structure may provide a more affordable way to manage health care costs while staying aligned with their values. A Values-Aligned Approach Health care decisions are both practical and personal. Families need to consider costs, coverage needs, medical history, risk tolerance, and how each option fits their overall financial plan. For those seeking an alternative to traditional insurance, medical cost sharing may be worth exploring. It offers believers a way to come together in community, helping one another carry the burden of medical expenses. Edita Mo is a Sovereign Revenue specialist who helps brilliant women break free from hustle-driven business models and step into leveraged, high-impact income. What You'll Learn From this Episode How to identify your current money mode—and why it may be quietly draining your time, energy, and income The difference between hustle-driven business vs. leveraged, sovereign revenue models The 3 pillars of sovereign revenue: leverage, autonomy, and durability “Reduce the number of moves, multiply the potency of every move.” - Edita Mo Topics Covered: 02:15 — When Hustle Stops Feeling Aligned. A powerful metaphor that invites you to shift from force… into possibility. 11:30 — The True Essence of Leverage. Moving from effort-driven action into intentional, expanded impact. 19:00 — Honoring Your Work as High-Value. Why real value isn't more content, but a shift in how people see and experience reality. 30:00 — The Foundations of Sovereign Creation. Leverage, autonomy, and durability—creating from a place of stability, choice, and self-trust. 55:00 — Wealth as a Reflection of Impact. Allowing abundance to flow as a natural result of the depth and truth of your work. Key Takeaways “You stay stuck because you keep doing what no longer makes sense—just to stay consistent.” - Edita Mo “Leverage gives you the ability to create more—with fewer moves.” - Edita Mo “You're not here to keep hitting the window. What does it mean to truly retire on your own terms? In this episode, I'm joined by Marc Baker, who shares his journey from a nearly three-decade government career to full retirement in his early 50s. Rather than being pushed out by frustration, Marc made a deliberate, well-planned decision to step away—choosing peace of mind over continued income. We discuss the importance of mindset in major life transitions, why having interests and community outside of work is critical, and how intentional planning shapes a more fulfilling retirement. Marc also opens up about adjusting to a life without a set schedule and what he's focusing on in this next chapter. This conversation is a powerful reminder that retirement isn't just about leaving work—it's about building a life you actually want to live.
Now what did you think about what I said in this week's episode...Somebody gets called a “whore” on TV and suddenly everyone has a side. Welcome to this week's Blonde Intelligence. I'm Ms Roni, and I always seek to give you exquisite cranial repertoire. I'm not here for the lazy version of that story. We start with Love and Hip Hop Atlanta and the Joc and Kendra situation, where rumors, old receipts, and public disrespect collide. I talk through why the insults don't actually solve anything, how “I'm educated” can come off like a shield, and what it looks like when frustration gets aimed at women while the man stays strangely untouched. From there, I pivot to Trick Daddy and the AKA party drama. If you book a rap lineup for a night party, what did you expect to hear? We get into expectations, event planning, and why walking out is different from shutting the whole thing down. It's a real look at nightlife culture, accountability, and how fast public judgment moves when clips hit the internet. We close with a quick thought on Damoni flipping “Ms. Jackson” and why keeping momentum is sometimes the smartest play. After a tragically crunchy run-in with a rogue rhinoceros, young James escapes two nightmare aunts and tumbles into the world's strangest road trip: a skyscraper-sized peach rolling across the countryside. Inside, he teams up with a crew of oversized insect roommates—part found family, part traveling circus—as they sail the fruit across the Atlantic while dodging sharks, seagulls, and the occasional bout of existential bug chatter. Along the way, James discovers that courage, friendship, and a little bit of weirdness can turn even the most miserable life into one very sweet adventure.

In this episode of Shed and Shine, Gino returns to the foundation of the Three Discoveries that guide the journey to freeing your True Self. With the release of the revised edition of Shine, he revisits “I am driven,” “All decisions are made from love or fear,” and “It is possible to be driven and have peace,” offering a fresh lens and simpler language. At the heart of the message is awareness. Driven people are both a blessing and a challenge, capable of great impact yet often operating from a foundation of angst rather than peace. Gino invites listeners to consider what it means to live from the inside out instead of the outside in. When the ego loosens its grip and past blocks are shed, drive no longer runs on fear but on clarity and peace. The result is a powerful balance of impact and peace, or whatever words best describe your version of shining in the world. Scripture:Acts 28:2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold. 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. 4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live. 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm. 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god., King James VersionIn this episode, we come together to seek the Lord concerning several pressing issues we are facing in the world today. LESSON 33There Is Another Way Of Looking At The World.Today's idea is an attempt to recognize that you can shift your perception of the world in both its outer and inner aspects. A full five minutes should be devoted to the morning and evening applications. In these practice periods, the idea should be repeated as often as you find comfortable, though unhurried applications are essential. Alternate between surveying your outer and inner perceptions, but without an abrupt sense of shifting.Merely glance casually around the world you perceive as outside yourself, then close your eyes and survey your inner thoughts with equal casualness. Try to remain equally uninvolved in both, and to maintain this detachment as you repeat the idea throughout the day.The shorter exercise periods should be as frequent as possible. Specific applications of today's idea should also be made immediately, when any situation arises which tempts you to become disturbed. For these applications, say:There is another way of looking at this.Remember to apply today's idea the instant you are aware of distress. It may be necessary to take a minute or so to sit quietly and repeat the idea to yourself several times. Closing your eyes will probably help in this form of application.- Jesus Christ in ACIM

As we step into a new year, many of us feel it—that quiet but persistent pressure to do more, fix more, and somehow have everything figured out right now. New goals, new systems, bigger numbers—and for practice owners, that pressure can feel especially heavy and often pretty lonely. In today's episode, I want to invite you to think about January differently—not as a month for pushing harder or becoming more efficient, but as a chance to slow down and get honest about what you can actually hold. Drawing on Barbara Brown Taylor's Home by Another Way and Oliver Burkeman's 4,000 Weeks, we'll talk about burnout, the efficiency trap, and why things don't magically get easier "once we get there." This conversation is about reconnecting with your why, redefining what growth really means, and considering what it might look like to go home by another way this year—one that creates more space, alignment, and sustainability in your practice and your life. This sermon reflects on the Feast of the Three Magi, tracing their Persian origins, their roots in Zoroastrian priesthood, and their remarkable response to a Messianic hope only dimly perceived through their own tradition. Drawn by the sign of the star, the Magi journey in humility toward a Messiah they do not yet fully understand, offering gifts that prophetically reveal Christ's identity as King (gold), God (frankincense), and Healer who conquers death through suffering (myrrh). Their offerings mirror the true gift God desires from every believer: the total offering of oneself—hopes, sorrows, joys, and obedience—returned in thanksgiving to the One who gave all first. Their willingness to follow God's guidance beyond familiar paths leads them not only to Christ but to transformation, as they “return another way,” a theme echoed by Pope St. Gregory the Great's teaching on repentance and obedience. In this light, the sermon connects the Magi's journey to the newly illumined entering the Church, reminding all the faithful that once Christ is encountered, there can be no return to former ways, only a continual movement toward deeper communion with God and the Kingdom of Heaven.
Long-term care has quickly become one of the greatest financial and emotional pressures facing American families. Rising costs, longer life expectancy, and limited insurance coverage have created a situation few retirees are prepared for. On today's episode of Faith and Finance, Harlan Accola joins us to explore this issue. He leads the reverse mortgage team at Movement Mortgage and works closely with families navigating long-term care decisions.Accola describes long-term care as “the elephant in the room.” As Baby Boomers age and care needs rise, families are trying to balance support for aging parents with raising children and managing their own financial responsibilities. Many households avoid discussing care needs until a crisis forces difficult decisions. The numbers reveal why planning is essential. Studies estimate that between 50% and 70% of retirees will require some level of long-term care during their lives. Yet more than 90% of those individuals have not purchased long-term care insurance—and many assume Medicare will cover the cost of nursing or assisted living facilities. In reality, Medicare provides limited short-term rehabilitation benefits, while long-term care typically falls under Medicaid, which only applies once a person has depleted most of their financial assets.Costs vary widely by region, but nursing facilities can range from $80,000 to $120,000 per year, and in-home care providers may charge $30–$40 per hour. Just one or two years of intensive care can rapidly deplete savings intended to last decades in retirement. One of the most overlooked financial risks is the well-being of the surviving spouse. Accola notes that husbands often require extensive care first, and the assets used to pay for their care can leave their wives financially vulnerable after their passing. Without adequate planning, the surviving spouse may face an underfunded retirement and fewer choices for her own care needs. To address this gap, families are encouraged to expand their planning tools. One strategy Accola highlights is to tap housing wealth through reverse mortgages. Because many retirees have significant equity tied up in their homes, a reverse mortgage can unlock funds without requiring monthly payments. These tax-free dollars can be used to pay for in-home care, cover long-term care insurance premiums, or bridge the gap between retirement income and care costs. It also allows individuals to remain at home longer—often delaying or avoiding the need for costly facility care—and preserves retirement accounts for the surviving spouse.Accola emphasizes that reverse mortgages are not a universal solution, but they should be included in the suite of planning options that families evaluate, alongside insurance, savings strategies, and Medicaid planning. Far too many households ignore the issue entirely or assume Medicare will handle it.As long-term care needs continue to rise, proactive planning is no longer optional. Exploring the full range of financial tools available can reduce stress, protect surviving spouses, and provide dignity and stability during the later stages of life.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm 66 and plan to retire at 70. I can take full Social Security at 66 and 10 months. Should I start benefits now while continuing to work full-time, or wait? If I take it now, should I place the funds in an IUL, an IBC strategy, or invest through my Edward Jones account?I've borrowed from my 401(k) several times over the past decade and paid myself interest. Since I hate paying interest on loans like auto loans, is borrowing from my 401(k) a better option than taking a regular loan? If an auto loan is at 5–6%, would it be better to borrow directly from the bank?If I make small extra payments each month on my mortgage and loan, is that roughly equivalent to making a single lump-sum principal payment each year, or does the timing make a difference?I have a question about IRA beneficiaries. If someone inherits an IRA, what would the tax implications be, and is there a better way to pass the money on than simply naming a beneficiary? My husband and I are 45 and 50, and we're considering a 1031 exchange on a property with about $250,000 in capital gains and $15,000 remaining on the mortgage. Nathan Meckley reflects on Epiphany as the manifestation of light that both illuminates God's presence and exposes the deep shadows of power, fear, and violence in the world. Nathan read the story of the Magi and we spent some time reflecting on the line “they left for their own country by another way.” Queries: How do you address the reality of shadow in the presence of light, both spiritually and practically? What can influence you to “go another way,” to choose a different path? Would you do so even when the outcome is uncertain?

Anderson about the liberal tendency to limit political action to voting while simultaneously blaming victims of the electoral system for their own oppression (e.g. dismissal of the south as somehow “deserving” Republican control). This book names people who I knew or knew of in Silicon Valley. It is a reaction to the author's time at Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byers. He was part of the team that financed Google and co-founded Drugstore.com during the dot-com frenzy. He was actively involved with Jeff Bezos at Amazon. The prevailing wisdom was simple: raise as much capital as possible, scale at breakneck speed, and worry about profitability later. At the heart of the book is the Evergreen model, a philosophy of building companies that last “and last and last.” Whorton outlines the Evergreen 7Ps® framework, which includes:• Purpose: A mission beyond personal wealth creation.• Perseverance: Commitment to long-term endurance.• People First: Prioritizing employees, customers, and communities.• Profitability: Growth funded through cash flow, not endless rounds of dilution.• Private: Freedom from public market pressures.• Pacience: A deliberate pace, resisting the frenzy of blitzscaling.• Philosophy: A values-driven approach to leadershipReject the false binary. You don't have to choose between hypergrowth or irrelevance. Many founders feel pressured to pursue VC funding even when their business fundamentals don't align. Evergreen offers a viable third path.--------------**Real Estate Espresso Podcast:** Spotify: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://open.spotify.com/show/3GvtwRmTq4r3es8cbw8jW0?si=c75ea506a6694ef1) iTunes: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-real-estate-espresso-podcast/id1340482613) Website: [www.victorjm.com](http://www.victorjm.com) LinkedIn: [Victor Menasce](http://www.linkedin.com/in/vmenasce) YouTube: [The Real Estate Espresso Podcast](http://www.youtube.com/@victorjmenasce6734) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/realestateespresso](http://www.facebook.com/realestateespresso) Email: [podcast@victorjm.com](mailto:podcast@victorjm.com) **Y Street Capital:** Website: [www.ystreetcapital.com](http://www.ystreetcapital.com) Facebook: [www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital](https://www.facebook.com/YStreetCapital) Instagram: [@ystreetcapital](http://www.instagram.com/ystreetcapital)
