The Doron Keidar Podcast

In this gripping and profoundly informative conversation, I sit down with Izabella Tabarovsky, a leading scholar of Soviet anti-Zionism and contemporary left antisemitism. Tabarovsky is a Senior Fellow at the Z3 Institute for Jewish Priorities and a Research Fellow at both the London Centre for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and ISGAP.Drawing from her years of research on Soviet propaganda and its legacy, Tabarovsky unpacks how virulently antisemitic forms of "anti-Zionism" were central to Cold War-era Communist ideology—and how many of these same tropes and tactics have re-emerged in today's far-left discourse. From the Soviet Union's deployment of conspiracy theories linking Zionism to Nazism to the global campaign that culminated in the infamous 1975 UN Resolution declaring Zionism a form of racism, we trace how these narratives were manufactured, exported, and normalized.Tabarovsky argues that, to quote William Faulkner, “the past is not dead, it is not even past.” Soviet-era antisemitic anti-Zionism, she shows, has left behind a “toxic ideological brew” that still shapes public conversations, academic discourse, and political movements in the West.Topics discussed:The Soviet Union's anti-Zionist propaganda machine and the role of the KGBHow antisemitism was masked as political critiqueThe use of prominent Soviet Jews in anti-Zionist campaignsThe parallels between Cold War-era propaganda and modern leftist antisemitismThe ideological roots of contemporary far-left anti-Zionist rhetoric

Why have, for many years, eating disorders disproportionately affected girls? In a previous episode of the Food Matters Live podcast, we focused on how eating disorders affect boys and men. For boys and men, it is a relatively new topic of discussion, even if the issue has been around for some time. But girls and young women eating disorders have been spoken about in public discourse for much longer. The problem is, the number of people affected is still rising. According to the NHS, more young people than ever are receiving treatment for eating disorders. In the last year, there has been a 35% increase in hospital admissions, with girls aged 17-to-19 having higher rates than any other demographic. They are difficult figures to ignore and raise the question: Why do eating disorders affect more girls than boys? What role do the media, the food industry, and social pressure have to play? And, as the London Centre for Eating Disorders suggests, has the Covid pandemic had an impact on cases? Amir al-Zubaidi is Director of Nasiriyah Museum, and now SBAH Director of Archaeology for Dhi Qar province. He introduces us to Nasiriyah Museum, and discusses both his achievements so far and his dreams for the future. What interests the people of Nasiriyah, and what role does heritage play in civic life there? This is the first in an experimental mini-series where we hear the thoughts of colleagues who are doing important work in Iraq. Yet while their work may be well known in Iraq itself, few in the UK or the wider western world know anything about it. This may be partly because of the nature of the specialist's position, or the low level of Arabic language skills in the west. With the help of interpreter Zainab Mizyidawi, Amir was interviewed in Arabic and the results have been translated into English. This episode was made possible through the generous support of the London Centre for the Ancient Near East. 4:31 Nasiriyah Museum9:39 visitors11:42 audience engagement15:55 goals19:59 what interests people21:07 role of heritage in Nasiriyah 23:20 role of foreign teams24:40 life as director of archaeology 29:49 priorities and challenges30:55 hopesMusic by Ruba HillawiWebsite: http://wedgepod.orgYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSM7ZlAAgOXv4fbTDRyrWgwEmail: wedgepod@gmail.comTwitter: @wedge_pod Patreon: http://Patreon.com/WedgePod

We all know that good boundaries are pretty much essential if we want happy relationships. There is a lot of confusion, though, about what exactly a boundary is and how to make it work. Can we have too many boundaries? Should we ever compromise on the boundaries we set? This week Andrew talks about boundaries with Graham Johnston and Matt Wotton, psychotherapists and co-founders of the London Centre of Applied Psychology. Matt and Graham share their own experiences of creating good boundaries in both love and parenting, and what it means if we are struggling to get this right. Our ability to set boundaries is linked closely to our attachment style: those with an anxious attachment may allow their boundaries to crumble too easily; while those with an avoidant attachment can have so many rigid boundaries that they struggle to let anyone in. Andrew also shares a prayer for good boundaries, which he often uses with marital therapy clients: 'I am me and You are you. It's a miracle that we've found each other But I'm responsible for my stuff And you're responsible for yours'   Graham Johnston is a psychotherapist and educator. He is Director of Policy at The Bowlby Centre, the UK's leading training institution in attachment-based psychotherapy, and has also worked for the UK Government, specialising in home affairs. He and Matt Wotton are the Co-Founders and Directors of LCAP.  Matt Wotton is a psychotherapist and executive coach, and also Chair of The Bowlby Centre and Director at LCAP. Matt has over two decades of experience in forensic mental health in the criminal justice system - in operations, coaching leaders, and advising ministers. He led the review of Race in the Criminal Justice System (The Lammy Review), commissioned by the Prime Minister, and has been a member of the Prison & Probation Board.    Follow Up Join our Supporters Club to access exclusive behind-the-scenes content, fan requests and the chance to ask Andrew your own questions. They forced me into this tiny little interrogation room off the big anteroom, a whole mob of policemen shouting and screaming. I thought I would perish there, that I was going to die there and then, which was exactly what they wanted me to think. Their intention was to overwhelm me with terror, and they did. But then Swanepoel's interrogation partner, a man named Harvey Richter, produced this brick and he held it up in front of me right across my eyes and I thought, looking at its granular surface, that it would abrade my face when he hit me with it. But he didn't, he put it down in front of me and said: Stand on it.    Episode Description: John begins our journey through his past by describing his family life before his arrest and torture at the age of 21 at the hands of the South African Security Police. We learn of his family's longstanding history of opposition to political injustice. He then recounts his methods of survival during his imprisonment which included forming a 'relationship' with the brick he was forced to stand on for days and nights. He also internally relied upon his loving parents, his girlfriend, his Jewish identity, and The Sounds of Silence. He was held in solitary confinement and brutalized until his release to travel to Israel.  After establishing his life in England, John eventually began training as a psychotherapist. He describes having life-changing personal treatments including two analyses and he has become a contributor to the field especially to the world of analytic group therapy. He shares with us vignettes of patients he has worked with and how he has turned 'swords into plowshares' in his efforts at transforming his own scars into the act of healing others.    Our Guest: John Schlapobersky, BA MSc is a psychoanalytic and couple psychotherapist and a group analyst accredited by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. After many years in private practice at the Group Analytic Practice, he established his own Bloomsbury Psychotherapy Practice in 2009. He is also a training analyst and faculty member at the Institute of Group Analysis and an honorary research fellow at the Birkbeck College University of London. He has served as faculty at the London Centre for Psychotherapy, Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships (TCCR) and is a founding member of the British Society for Couple Psychotherapists and Counsellors. He teaches internationally on topics that include group studies, psychoanalytic and relational theory, and trauma. His commitments include programs in Australia, China, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Japan, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, the USA, and elsewhere. He was Program Chair for the Group Analytic Society Symposium in 2011: Cultures, Conflict, and Creativity. John was formerly a Consultant Psychotherapist for the Traumatic Stress Clinic, London, and The Medical Foundation for Victims of Torture which, as a founding trustee, he helped establish in 1985. It is now called Freedom From Torture, a leading human rights charity.    Recommended Readings:  Bernstein, H. (1994) The Rift: The Exile Experience of South Africans. London: Jonathan Cape. So in 2004 she was personally trained by Narendra Mehta – called the ‘Guru of the British Indian Head Massage movement' who had developed a unique technique called Indian  Champissage. She then trained further to become an approved tutor in the massage in 2007 and has since been providing treatments to clients and teaching others the technique. What is a ‘gang'? Whilst the disciplines of Criminology and Sociology have long grappled with this question, the answer is increasingly of no relevance to criminal justice policies that claim to address the problem of violent crime across England and Wales. Within the context of contemporary policing and law enforcement, the ‘gang' has evolved as a ‘transcendental signifier' (Alexander 2008) and today serves to legitimise intrusive and harmful policing practices as part of a gang-industry (Williams 2014). Of particular concern to this session, a cursory glance at police gang databases reveals that those who are ‘suspected' by the police as ‘gang members', associated to gangs or are ‘at risk' of gang violence are from minoritised groups and particular black young men. In this session, we explore the factors which have given rise to the racialised construction of the ‘gang' and consider the harms experienced and endured by those who are policed with suspicion. Questions for discussion Consider the multiple ways in which the gang label is (mis)used in contemporary policing and law enforcement practice. With reference to processes of criminalisation reflect upon the State's response to particular forms of music - how may this relate to the mediated construct of the gang. Given it is not a criminal offence to be in a gang, why do you think so much government resource and media attention has been given to this construct?
