Colombia inició este domingo una nueva etapa en su historia política El economista Gustavo Petro asumió como el primer presidente de izquierda del país. Y lo hizo anunciando una agenda de reformas ambiciosas. Hoy empieza nuestra segunda oportunidad. Nos la hemos ganado, se la han ganado. Su esfuerzo valió y valdrá la pena. Es la hora del cambio. nuestro futuro no está escrito (…), podemos escribirlo juntos, en paz y en unión. Hoy empieza la Colombia de lo posible. A lo largo del discurso inaugural, Petro se comprometió a «conseguir la paz verdadera y definitiva» entablando diálogos con los grupos que todavía continúan en armas en Colombia. Por otro lado, envió un mensaje a Estados Unidos cuando pidió el fin de la guerra antidrogas que Washington alienta desde hace cuatro décadas y que, dijo, fortaleció a las maffias y debilitó a los Estados, que ha llevado a los Estados a cometer crímenes y ha evaporado el horizonte de las democracias. Además, buscó ubicarse como un líder regional en un nuevo modelo de desarrollo respetuoso del medio ambiente, uno de los ejes de la campaña que lo llevó al triunfo en el balotaje del 19 de junio. Ayer, en el primer día de la nueva administración, el equipo de Petro dio su primer gran paso político y económico. El ministro de Economía presentó ante la Cámara de Representantes una reforma tributaria que grava a los sectores más ricos para financiar políticas sociales. ¿Qué margen de acción tiene Petro para llevar a cabo su agenda? Colombia, la tercera economía de América Latina y el principal aliado de Estados Unidos en la región, tendrá por primera vez en su historia un presidente de izquierda. El senador Gustavo Petro, de 62 años, economista, exguerrillero del movimiento M19 y ex alcalde de Bogotá, triunfó este domingo en la segunda vuelta de las elecciones presidenciales al obtener 50,44% de los votos frente al 47,04% de su rival, el empresario independiente Rodolfo Hernández. Anoche, una vez confirmmados los resultados, en su discurso frente a sus seguidores Petro prometió paz, justicia social y justicia ecológica. En esta campaña nos decían que íbamos a expropiar los bienes de los colombianos e íbamos a destruir la propiedad privada. De manera franca les digo que vamos a desarrollar el capitalismo en Colombia. No porque lo adoremos si no porque tenemos primero que superar la pre modernidad en Colombia, el feudalismo en Colombia, los nuevos esclavismos y mentalidades atávicas aliadas al mundo de siervos esclavos que tenía como aliados a señores feudales. Tenemos que construir una democracia. Más temprano, Hernández había reconocido la derrota en un mensaje emitido a través de Facebook. Acepto el resultado como debe ser si deseamos que las instituciones sean firmes. Espero que esta decisión sea beneficiosa para todos y que Colombia se encamine hacia el cambio que predominó en el voto de la primera vuelta. Le deseo al doctor Gustavo Petro que sepa dirigir al país, que sea fiel a su discurso contra la corrupción y que no defraude a quienes confiaron en él., El balotaje de ayer era seguido con gran interés porque marcaba el comienzo de una nueva era política en Colombia, ya que en la definición del nuevo gobierno quedaban afuera los partidos tradicionales conservadores, muy golpeados, entre otras cosas, por las protestas sociales de los años 2019, 2020 y 2021. Además los partidos de izquierda de América Latina esperaban que un triunfo de Petro afirmara el cambio de tendencia que pareció iniciarse en la región a fines el año pasado con el acceso al poder de Gabrel Boric en Chile. Una propuesta de reforma tributaria fue el catalizador para un estallido social sin precedentes en Colombia. El país lleva ya más de una semana de paros y manifestaciones que se han tornado violentas, con denuncias por excesos en la represión que han recibido condena internacional. Por ejemplo, ayer la Cancillería uruguaya expresó “preocupación ante los graves actos de violencia” y llamó a recobrar “rápidamente los canales de diálogo y paz”. Se habla de unos 24 muertos y cientos de heridos en enfrentamientos con la Policía, también se manejan unos 80 desaparecidos. Hay estaciones de Policía y de transporte que han sido quemadas por los manifestantes, aunque la mayoría son pacíficos. La tensión es tal que el gobierno de Iván Duque resolvió retirar la propuesta de la discusión parlamentaria, pero eso no ha aplacado a los manifestantes, que han ampliado sus reclamos y han conformado el llamado Comité del Paro. Además del presidente, en el fuego cruzado está el exmandatario Álvaro Uribe, quien el viernes 30 de abril publicó en Twitter: “Apoyemos el derecho de soldados y policías de utilizar sus armas para defender su integridad y para defender a las personas y bienes de la acción criminal del terrorismo vandálico”. Esto se ha visto como una justificación para la violencia de parte de las fuerzas del orden. ¿Cómo se llegó aquí? ¿Cómo se sale de esto? Lo conversamos con la politóloga colombiana Laura Wills Otero, docente en la Universidad de los Andes de Bogotá, y con uno de nuestros analistas internacionales de referencia, Gustavo Calvo, conductor de La Hora Global.

Laura Wills Mooney has been acting on stage throughout her life.  After completing graduate school, she worked as a clinical social worker for Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, eventually serving as Chief of Psychiatric Work at their Richmond facility in California's East Bay. After her retirement, she studied improvisational theater at Bay Area theater Sports in San Francisco, also known as BATS, voiceover at Voice One In San Francisco and is now immersed in the world of audiobook narration. Laura joins 19Stories on the eve of the release of Pixar's new animated feature, Soul, of which Laura has a role in.  In addition to other topics, we'll be chatting about how that part came about for her.

Curator Danny Lacy talks to James Tylor and Laura Wills, winners of the $15,000 Mornington Peninsula Shire / Beleura - The Tallis Foundation major acquisitive award in the 2018 National Works on Paper. Their award-winning work The Forgotten Wars 2017 was based on town and mining maps from the British Parliamentary papers and Commissioners’ reports on the colonization of Australia. The Australian Frontier wars were a series of armed conflicts, massacres and battles that took place from 1788 to 1930 between the invading British Government and Aboriginal Australians. They talk about this unique collaboration as an Indigenous and a non-indigenous artist and how they are decolonising the Australian frontier war stories. A conversation with MPRG curator Danny Lacy. The 2014 Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award Dinner was held last weekend at the Central Library, and Professor Michael Shelden was named as this year's National Author Award Winner. Travis DiNicola spoke with Shelden, who is a biographer, and the first non-fiction writer to win the national award. Joining them in the studio was Laura Wills of the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.
