Both agreed to be exiled. Yet both still languish behind bars. For Lydia Otero, researching the history of the Southwest is personal and political. Growing up in Tucson, Arizona, their family frequented a place they called La Calle that was bustling with shops and pedestrians. The family did not own a car, so they walked there.Soon, the construction of I-10 through the city divided them from La Calle. Then, while Otero was living in Los Angeles working as an electrician and becoming active in LGBT+ organizing, La Calle was torn down as part of Tucson's urban renewal initiative.Otero decided to become the person to tell these stories. They returned to Tucson to pursue a PhD in history at the University of Arizona, where they later worked as a professor of Mexican American studies. They are the author of four books, including: "La Calle, a history of urban renewal in Tucson"; "In the Shadow of the Freeway and L.A. Wednesday morning, tenants advocates gathered at the state capitol to call for an eviction moratorium and rent relief funding statewide for people who are behind on rent as a result of amped-up ICE presence in. The authority to enact an eviction moratorium for the state lies with Governor Tim Walz, who has said he can't do it without declaring a peacetime emergency. He has so far been unwilling to make that move. Amanda Otero, an executive director for the nonprofit Take Action Minnesota, said workers and families are absorbing the economic impact of the ICE surge in the state. “Housing stability is not separate from recovery,” Otero said. “It is the foundation of it.”One of the groups pushing for the moratorium and even greater measures to support renters is the newly-formed Twin Cities Tenants Union. It's a combination of already-existing unions across Minneapolis and St. Paul that came together over the past two months to advocate for renters who have lost income during the ICE surge. The group is pushing for a rent strike beginning March 1. Lucid Thomas has been organizing with the tenants union and he joined MPR News host Nina Moini to explain. The Minnesota Multi Housing Association is a group that advocates for landlords and building managers. CEO Cecil Smith said in a statement to MPR News that rent collections overall were stable in January and February and on par with the previous year, according to the group's members. He said the association will “continue to help those seeking rental assistance.”

(Aniversario de la Muerte de José Ferrer) José Vicente Ferrer de Otero y Cintrón nació en Santurce, Puerto Rico, el 8 de enero de 1912. A los seis años se trasladó con su padre a la ciudad de Nueva York. De ahí que en 1934 obtuviera su Licenciatura en Humanidades de la Universidad de Princeton, donde se apasionó por el arte dramático, y que posteriormente estudiara literatura francesa en la Universidad de Columbia. En 1943, su interpretación de Yago en la obra «Otelo» lo lanzó a la fama en el mundo artístico. En 1947, cuando se otorgaron por primera vez los premios Tony, recibió el primero de cinco premios Tony de teatro por interpretar por primera vez el personaje Cyrano de Bergerac. Un año más tarde obtuvo la primera de tres nominaciones al Óscar por su actuación como el Delfín en la película «Juana de Arco» protagonizada por Íngrid Bergman. En 1950, José Ferrer recibió la prestigiosa estatuilla por la versión fílmica de «Cyrano de Bergerac», llegando a ser el primer actor en ganar un Óscar por la recreación de un papel teatral en una película. Ese codiciado Óscar lo donó al Teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico para que les sirviera de estímulo a los futuros aspirantes a carreras teatrales. Su tercera y última nominación la logró en 1952 por su actuación en la versión original de la película «Moulin Rouge». Entre las obras teatrales que hizo, se destaca «El hombre de la Mancha», en la que encarnó al célebre Don Quijote. Ese mismo año, la Organización de Estados Americanos le rindió homenaje por ser vínculo de excelencia entre la cultura latina y la anglosajona. En total, Ferrer actuó en setenta películas y dirigió trece producciones de Broadway y siete películas. Entre los muchos reconocimientos que recibió durante su carrera como actor, director, escritor, productor, cantante y compositor, se destacan su propia estrella en el Paseo de Estrellas de Hollywood, la primera Medalla Nacional de Arte en 1985 (que le otorgó el ex presidente Ronald Reagan), y su selección en 1981 al Paseo de la Fama del Teatro. Con sobrada razón se le dedicó, en 1990, el Festival de Teatro Latinoamericano. En lo personal, José Ferrer se casó cuatro veces y tuvo seis hijos, uno de ellos el también actor Miguel Ferrer. Quienes no saben que José Ferrer fue tío del actor George Clooney y suegro de la cantante Debby Boone, tal vez tampoco sepan que hablaba cinco idiomas —español, inglés, francés, italiano y alemán— y que los dominaba a tal grado que durante una conferencia de prensa se dirigió a todos los periodistas en sus respectivos idiomas.1 «Un autor puede escribir algo que perdure trescientos años después de su muerte —observó José Ferrer durante una entrevista en 1986—, pero cinco minutos después de mi muerte, ya no puedo actuar ni dirigir más.»2 Quiera Dios que esas palabras, que pronunció el reconocido actor unos seis años antes de su muerte el 26 de enero de 1992, nos lleven a reflexionar que, antes de afrontar nuestra propia muerte, debemos pedirle a Dios que desempeñe el papel de Director de la obra sin igual que es nuestra vida, en la que nosotros somos los actores principales. Armado como caballero, sirvió en expediciones del rey Fernando I. Luego, llega a ser príncipe bajo Sancho y pelea muchas batallas entre castellanos y leoneses. El Cid colabora con diversos reyes, tanto cristianos como musulmanes, llevando a cabo importantes conquistas.Los triunfos y vicisitudes de Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar dieron surgimiento al primer cantar de gesta de la literatura española, llamado el Cantar de mío Cid. Como las hazañas del Cid Campeador eran narradas de boca en boca, algunas de ellas se hicieron legendarias, aunque no fueran del todo ciertas.Cuenta la historia que el Cid Campeador regaló a sus dos yernos sendas espadas conmemorativas como símbolo de aceptación en la familia. Hoy se las conoce como la espada Tizona y la espada Colada. Como las hijas fueron maltratadas por los yernos, el Cid Campeador echó a los yernos de la familia y recogió las espadas. Una de esas míticas espadas, la Tizona, fue objeto de una polémica en tiempos modernos.El último de los herederos de Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, José Ramón Suárez de Otero, recibió el beneficio de la herencia universal de los bienes del Campeador. Viendo el valor de la espada y que era parte del le-gado familiar, Suárez de Otero realizó gestiones para su venta. La venta se realizó en 2007 por la cantidad de 1,600,000 euros.Lo que Suárez de Otero no hizo fue convenir con los otros herederos en sus intenciones de vender la espada. Al actuar por su cuenta, retuvo el dinero de la venta en su bolsillo en detrimento de los derechos de los demás herederos. Pronto, aquellos demandaron a Suárez de Otero y un juzgado madrileño lo condenó a pagar la mitad del dinero de la venta a los demás herederos.Los valores de un héroe no pasan automáticamente a su descendencia, en especial cuando hay dinero y recursos materiales de por medio. El Cid Campeador representó lealtad y sacrificio por los intereses del reino castellano. Nuestro conquistador, Cristo Jesús, es el símbolo del renunciamiento y del servicio por amor. No permitamos que la avaricia por las ganancias terrenales nos coloque en contradicción con los altos principios por los que nuestro héroe salvador vivió y murió.

Vanessa takes us inside the mechanics of bias, the structures driving extreme content, and the habits that actually make us smarter news consumers.  This episode is your practical guide to staying informed without getting manipulated.   What to listen for: What the Ad Fontes media bias chart looks like, and how to use it: their mission is to rate all the news to positively transform society.
