God Observes His ChildrenPsalm 33:13-15 “From heaven the LORD looks down and observes the children of Adam, From his dwelling place he surveys all who dwell on earth. The One who fashioned together their hearts is the One who knows all their works.”God looks down upon us from heaven, this is not news to us. However, it may be something we don't think about enough. Do you remember this when you are going through your day? Do you stop and think about how God is observing you from His dwelling place when you are going about your day? I wonder if we would do half of the things that we do, if were thought about this more. The One who fashioned together our hearts is the One who knows all of our works. God knows all that you do. God is not just sitting around in heaven enjoying the good life. He is not just sitting back and enjoying all the praise from the angels and saints. He is alert, always watching us and seeing where He needs to step in and help. He is also not just looking at some of us. He is observing all of the children of Adam. That is every person on earth. I think sometimes we can think that if someone does not believe the same things that we believe that God is not paying any attention to them. God is observing all of us. He knows everything that everyone on earth does. I am sure He is not pleased with a lot that He sees. I know I have read many things about how the sins of the world grieve Him. He loves His children and does not want to lose a single one of them. Even though you probably already knew that God was looking down on you from above, does hearing that change anything for you? When I read that, even though I know this, it serves as a reminder for me. It makes me slow down and evaluate my days. It has me reviewing the last few weeks. How have I spent my time? What have I been doing and how have I been acting? When I look back over my last few weeks, am I proud of how I lived them? Are their any parts of them that I wouldn't want God to have witnessed? For me, my answer would be yes, there are parts that I am not happy with. How about you? How have you been living and are there things you would have done differently had you been consciously thinking about God observing all you do? I wonder if things would have been different if I had kept the thought that God is always watching me in the forefront of my mind? It's not even big things that I am talking about. It's the little decisions we make that can add up over time. Or the little things that can lead to you missing out of important things. For instance, one thing I am not proud of over the last couple of weeks is that I haven't really had a plan at dinner time. My son would ask, “What is for dinner?” and I would have no idea. I would ask what he wanted and then make ramen noodles or penne pasta, maybe a frozen pizza. I usually didn't have any meat thawed. Whenever he asked, I would feel bad about not planning in advance and then vow to do better tomorrow. However, this went on for a week or two. When I look back on those weeks I am not proud of the way I showed up at dinner time or the fact that God observed it all. However, I decided this week that I am going to plan our meals in advance. I'm going to be proud of how I show up at dinner time.I actually have a book called Saving Dinner by Leanne Ely. This book is amazing because it has weekly meal plans in it. It gives you the shopping list, the recipes and it even tells you what you will make for side dishes with each meal. It also has the recipes broken up into seasons of the year. I made a decision that I was going to make sure I knew what was for dinner and that I was providing a healthy meal for my family. I printed the shopping list, and went shopping. Last night was my first night going with this plan. I made apple chicken with baked potatoes and baked butternut squash. Do you remember how I said that it isn't necessarily the big things, but the little things that cause you to miss out on other things? Well, last night I made a nice dinner and I asked the kids to sit down with me for dinner. Two of them did and one of my sons even tried something new, which he doesn't do often. After dinner while we were still at the table I asked if they wanted to play a game. They said no, but then thought about it for a minute and changed their minds. Last night I got to sit at the table and play a board game with two of my sons for over 2 hours. Would this have happened if I hadn't made dinner and asked them to join me at the table? I don't know, probably not, as it hasn't happened in several months. It is not that I haven't made dinner in several months its just that a series of small things have lead up to us not having dinner together much as a family. It's amazing how it happens when I think about it. We were having family time every night for a bit and having dinner together. Then something happens and we make an exception one night, then another night and then the next thing I know we don't see the boys because they are on their electronics and eating dinner in their rooms. Tony and I are just looking around and wondering how we got back to this. It is not just one thing it is a series of small decisions that don't seem like a big deal at the time. What are these small decisions in your life that are causing you to miss out on some pretty great things? Maybe it's not meal times for you. Maybe you have been spending time on other things instead spending time in prayer. Maybe it started with just hitting snooze that one time, and now you spend 30 minutes hitting snooze and miss our on 30 minutes of time with the Lord. Or maybe haven't been calling your parents, children, or friends as much. You used to call them regularly, but then something happened and over time you got out of the habit. Now you are nervous to call because it has been so long. Think of all the great conversations you are missing out on by not calling. I don't know what your thing is. I bet if you look at your life through the lens of “God is observing me from heaven and He knows all my works,” you can think of a thing or two that you may want to change. Why not take the opportunity to work on that thing today? Sometimes when we get to this time of year, we may notice things we want to change and we let ourselves off the hook by saying we will change that in the new year. Why wait until January 1st to make changes that you know you want to make. Especially if there are things you are not proud of. If you are looking over the last few weeks of your life and you can think of times when you aren't proud of how you showed up, then make a decision right now to change how you will show up the next time you are in that circumstance. Don't put off until tomorrow, what you can do today. Tomorrow is not guaranteed to any of us.Dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, help us to be aware of you throughout our whole day. Help us to not only keep you in the front of our minds, but to keep the truth that you are always observing us at the front of our minds as well. Help us to make the right decisions even when they are difficult. Please help us to always show up in a way that makes you proud. Shine a light on any area of our life that needs to change. Any area that has slowly become a less than version of what it once was. We love you Lord and we are so very grateful to have you in our lives. We are so grateful that we have a loving Father who keeps a constant watchful eye on us. Thank you! You are so very amazing and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen.Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. This podcast is an interview with Leanne Ely and is part of a series that IRT is doing to help people cope and prosper during the sheltering in place. Leanne Ely is the author of 10 books on cooking and is the founder of the cooking website, Saving Dinner. With many of us now being forced too stay indoors and figure things out in the kitchen, Leanne gives some amazing tips that will help you save time and money when you're needing to cook without knowing where to start.
Today’s guest is my dear friend Leanne Ely. We quickly go deep in this conversation as she walks us through the ever-evolving path she has been on both personally and professionally. She is a force of inspiration and creation, she has reinvented herself successfully multiple times. Even though her life wasn’t easy, she has had many hard moments and losses (which we talk about as well), she managed to create a career, a profession and a life that she dreamt of. As she describes it, she had the audacity to go from being a waitress in her 20’s to creating a successful catering business to the stars from nothing. She then became a New York Times best-selling author and creator of Saving Dinner, appearing on QVC, hosting a radio show and so much more! “You can’t know the map ahead of you. There is no GPS for it. There is just faith and courage. The confidence comes after you’ve done it.” ~ Leanne Ely I can’t wait for you to listen to this conversation and to be inspired. I hope that it will spark an idea or encourage you to move toward something you’ve been dreaming of in your own life. I’d love to hear what you think of this conversation. Confession time: I am NOT great in the kitchen. I mean, I LOVE food and am fascinated by its incredible potential for transforming our health, but when it comes to preparing it…I’ve got a lot of room to grow. And honestly, being intimidated by cooking is a common complaint I hear from the people I work with. Thankfully, I have finally found a solution for us all! My good friend Leanne Ely (aka the dinner party QUEEN) and the creator of Saving Dinner is on a mission to bring dinner back to American dinner tables via her NutriCoach School Program. This program consolidates her 30 years of nutrition + kitchen experience and provides instructional videos so you can learn the kitchen skills you need to feel like a kitchen goddess and prepare nutritionally-intelligent nourishing meals. And because every single meal you feed to your family literally has the power to positively (or negatively) impact their genetic and future health, there is almost nothing more important. She has decided to take me under her wing (she even bought my little Maverick a kid-friendly knife set for his 4th birthday) and you can learn all about her incredible program and how to get your little ones excited about healthy food in this week’s podcast, Cultivating Kitchen Confidence with Leanne Ely! Don’t forget to share this fun conversation if you feel so inspired.

Leanne Ely takes over That Mom Show and dishes out all the great tips on nutrition for moms.
My guest this week is Leanne Ely, a certified nutritionist passionate about bringing families back to the dinner table and eating meals together. In addition to her syndicated column, ‘The Dinner Diva' that appears in 250 newspapers nationwide she writes a popular food for thought column on the ever popular flylady.net. In 2001, Leanne created the Menu-Mailer on SavingDinner.com and has been dubbed the “mother” of menu planning. Leanne's goal is to bring families closer together by enjoying healthy and easy-to-prepare meals. In this episode, Leanne and I discuss the importance of the family dinner table and the incredible effects it has on both parents and children. Leanne provides us with steps on how to approach integrating mealtime back into our family culture and practical tips to make the transition become a new habit. She shares her personal experience and tips on resistant children that struggle with developmental or behavioral disorders and encourages parents to not lose heart. Children and teenagers who connect with their parents during mealtime build better parent-child relationships and have fewer chances of creating habits of substance abuse. Learn more about Leanne here. Mealtime Matters Creating a habit of eating together at the dinner table has a wealth of positive effects Children feel a sense of belonging and have higher-quality relationships with their parents Studies show that children and teenagers who have frequent dinners with their parents are less likely to engage in substance abuse Where To Begin Full family effort leads to a higher chance of success As a family, discuss and make a menu plan together This must be a family effort, not a one-person show (mom or dad only) Disperse the responsibility Get your spouse on board before approaching and convincing the children Take a child with you to help grocery shop Bring the family into the kitchen to help Designate different days for different tasks per child Let them be creative and interact with the food Hands-on nutrition: peaks interest in food variety for picky eaters Embrace The Chaos Remember: Making this collaboration happen is not an easy task It is easy to say, “I could do this faster if I just did it myself” but the results and payoff of spending those extra minutes have results that last a lifetime By adding elements of fun your children are more likely to willingly participate Learning small tasks and table manners come naturally when they are involved in the cooking process and engaged at the dinner table Your children may not be accustomed to sitting around a table but they will learn and adapt with time “Embrace your chaos, embrace your family, fix the things you can fix and just do the best that you can. It will get better as time goes on.” - Leanne Ely Engaging Resistant Children If your child has a developmental or behavioral disorder do not lose heart Your child can still learn and benefit greatly from this time together Teach simple tasks and follow them with great acknowledgment and applaud every achievement Repetition is key to success Do not let one child dictate the standards you want for your family No-Device Zone Mealtimes are a good starting point to create boundaries with electronic devices Having device-free mealtimes is essential to connect with one another and build relationships Begin by weaning your children off of the device for this occasion vs just taking it away Come up with a plan that works best for you and your family Maybe that is allowing them to use the device until the table is set and everyone sits down and then puts their phone in a basket for the duration of the meal Remember everyone's family is unique and you know your family best! Nutrition is often one of the first interventions that I recommend for pain relief, especially if you have pain from an inflammatory disease such as fibromyalgia, CRPS, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or even headaches. Anti-inflammatory nutrition has a sound evidence base to support it, but it's often ignored when it comes to chronic pain care management. When it comes to implementing it into a physical therapy practice, nutrition is very important because most of the patients that are being treated are people who have chronic pain or other types of pain syndromes. Nutrition consultant and chef Leanne Ely discusses the anti-inflammatory nutrition and introduces a particular diet that's showing up on people's plates more and more, the ketogenic diet, which is now being explored in many clinical studies. Growing up, one of my fondest memories is waking up on school mornings in the winter, lured from my cozy bed to the still-chilly house by the smells of breakfast cooking. Every single morning of my childhood, my own single mom would rise before my two brothers and me, and cook a proper hot breakfast: Pancakes and sausage with applesauce on the side, french toast and bacon, any version of eggs and omelets, oatmeal or muffins. This was the midwest, and my mom grew up on a farm. Meals were square, big, and served with cold milk. Now as a mom, I do more or less the same -- though I do find some short-cuts, like baking healthy muffins in bulk, freezing them, and microwave de-thawing them before dragging the kids out of bed. For dinner, I cook from scratch most evenings and we always sit down together for the meal -- something that makes me a bit of an anomaly these days. This shared passion for family dinners is just one thing that draws me to Leanne Ely. Over the past few years I've looked to Leanne as a mentor. After all, this momma launched a 7-figure digital marketing enterprise long before "digital marketing" was even a term. Back in 2001, this mom was a breadwinning wife homeschooling her two kids in rural North Carolina when she launched SavingDinner.com, one of if not the first meal planning subscription businesses. The business kept her focused through a divorce and single motherhood, and blossomed into a 7-figure enterprise that employs 10 food writers, a CIO, COO, customer service team and a sister white-label business whose clients include nationally famous physicians and celebrity chefs. "I can do almost all of my work with my slippers on and no pantyhose involved, and I’ve always been there for all my kids’ events," she says. Aside from business brilliance, Ely is an advocate -- building her enterprise on her mission to bring families back to the evening dinner table. In this episode we dish about our distain for picky eaters of all ages, our shared fond memories of home-cooked meals around the family dinner.
