Send us a textGood morning! Thank you for taking a few minutes to listen. If you are interested in the Daily Bible Devotional, you can find it at the links below:Amazon - (paperback, hardcover, and Kindle)Spiritbuilding.com - (premium quality paperback)Youtube Video Introducing the ContentFeel free to reach out with any questions: emersonk78@me.comActs 19 Paul's third journey takes him to Ephesus, where he stays for two years. He first meets disciples who had only experienced John's baptism. He teaches them about the Holy Spirit from God and baptizes them in Jesus' name. Paul then lays hands on them, imparting the power of the Holy Spirit. Extraordinary miracles occur through Paul, demonstrating God's limitless power. Later, some exorcists attempt to invoke Jesus' name without true faith and are overpowered by a demonic spirit, leading many to renounce occult practices and burn their sorcery books. Paul's teachings about Jesus ultimately challenge the idol-making trade, angering a craftsman named Demetrius. A riot breaks out as many of the people worship a goddess named Artemis. After two hours, the town clerk finally calms the crowd, and the mob disperses. Like Apollos in chapter 18, Paul encounters individuals with incomplete knowledge of Christ and His will. He teaches them the full truth of the gospel, leading them to be “baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” These accounts guide us in how to help believers with limited understanding. Paul asks questions to discern their beliefs and explains God's truth simply and clearly. He wisely reasons with others, avoiding an adversarial approach, and this leads to “the word of the Lord growing mightily and prevailing.” Share the word with kindness, building on the truth people already know. Though this may provoke opposition, trust in God's protection and blessings as you faithfully carry out His mission and share His love. Holy Lord, may Your will be done in our lives. Use us as messengers of truth, accepting opportunities to fulfill what is lacking in others' hearts. Thank You for Your perfect word to guide us and for Your protective power that gives peace and courage. Refute those who distract from the gospel and soften their hearts to obey and be saved. Disperse the crowds who let idolatry fuel anger and who lash out at Your people. We trust You are in control and that Your word will spread mightily. Strengthen us to engage faithfully in the work of sharing Your gospel.  Thought Questions: -       What is your attitude toward believers with incomplete knowledge about God? How can Paul's example impact how you interact with them? -       The sorcerers' failings opened people's eyes to see the truth. Are you ready to guide people to the truth when the lies of the world fail them? -       Demetrius was furious as the gospel was a threat to his income. Why does money so often affect how people respond to God's will?

The Cost of Legalistic Leadership | 1 Samuel 14:31-35

Resolute Podcast

Has legalistic leadership adversely affected you? Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. This week, we are in 1 Samuel 14. I've titled this chapter "A Contrast Of Leadership Between Jonathan and Saul." In the first part of Chapter 14, we witness Jonathan, who acted in faith, and God did some incredible things through him. In the second part of Chapter 14, Saul engages in and flubs up a really great thing that God had been doing. Saul cuts off the priest, who is in the middle of his duties because he sees the chaos in the enemy camp. So they head off in hot pursuit. But before they go, Saul makes the people swear an oath not to eat until his enemy is defeated.  We saw last time this was an unnecessary oath promoted from self-interest, and his son Jonathan knows it. Now the people are weak, and here is what happens in 31-35: They struck down the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. And the people were very faint. The people pounced on the spoil and took sheep and oxen and calves and slaughtered them on the ground. And the people ate them with the blood. Then they told Saul, “Behold, the people are sinning against the Lord by eating with the blood.” And he said, “You have dealt treacherously; roll a great stone to me here.” And Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, ‘Let every man bring his ox or his sheep and slaughter them here and eat, and do not sin against the Lord by eating with the blood.'” So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night and they slaughtered them there. And Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first altar that he built to the Lord. — 1 Samuel 14:31-35 Let me say here that it sounds like they were eating raw flesh, like cannibals. But they are not. They simply had not allowed all the blood to drain from the animal before they cooked it. They were starving, so it led them to rush and sin. We have all encountered a moment like this. We have all been so hungry or waited so long to eat that when we are sat before a buffet, we cannot stop eating. Plenty of times, I have been so hungry that I have eaten an entire family-size bag of chips. There have been times I have waited so long for a meal that when food is finally in front of me, I eat too fast and beyond my capacity, to the point I cannot move. When you sit excessive amounts of food before hungry and exhausted men, we should expect them to rush and overeat. That's what happened here. The people were tired and hungry. They now had excessive food and rushed into an act of sin. But Saul led them into this unnecessary sin and blamed them for it. This is terrible leadership. Saul ruined a great story and a great moment. Had he not mandated this vow, think about how awesome this story would have ended. Jonathan and his armor-bearer sneak away. They take steps of courageous faith. They seek God. They climb a cliff into battle. Two men slaughter twenty men. Then, the Hebrew turncoats in the Philistine ranks turn on the garrison. Then, outside tribes join in from every direction. Saul sees the commotion and hustles over. Even in the moment of need, God provides some natural provision in the form of honey for a last push in battle. And finally, there is a complete defeat and plunder. Six hundred men defeat 36,000 men and send them running, but the whole story is ruined by an oppressive and selfish vow that should have never been issued, and then Saul blames his men for rushing to eat. Legalistic leaders forbid freedoms that God grants. They forbid freedom to control situations, people, and outcomes. However, sometimes, these restrictions backfire, tempting people to break with legalism and do things God forbids. This is exactly what Saul did here. His vow led the people into sin. Even worse, Saul doesn't take ownership of the policy that led his people into sin. He blames them. Saul played god, thus ruining a great moment where God did something great. One tension in leadership is knowing how to best lead a person or people to victory. Some only need to know the goal, others need tangible steps, and still others need protective boundaries. It is different for everyone. But as leaders, we have to make sure our attitude and heart are in the right place as we make these decisions. Saul instituted his vow out of selfish intent. He wasn't concerned about God or his victory. He was only worried about himself, his image, and his victory over "his enemy" (1 Samuel 14:24). If you lead one or many, pay attention to your heart today. There may be one who is challenging for you to lead. Be careful how you speak and lead them. Let the Spirit have control, and stop being purposely oppressive or passively aggressive. If you do, your legalistic plan might backfire and draw unneeded attention to your selfishness and sin. #LeadershipLessons, #FaithOverLegalism, #AvoidLegalism Ask This: In what areas of your life or leadership have you found yourself imposing unnecessary restrictions or rules? How can you lead with more grace and trust in God's guidance instead? Reflect on a time when legalistic attitudes caused more harm than good. How can you ensure your leadership fosters freedom in Christ rather than restrictive control? Do This: Watch your legalistic tendencies in leadership. Pray This: Lord, help me to lead with humility and grace, avoiding the pitfalls of legalism that stem from selfish motives. Guide my heart to prioritize Your will over my own, trusting You in every decision I make. Amen. Play This: Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me.

Walking into a new classroom only to find it filled with the previous teacher's leftovers can be overwhelming. In this episode, Bridget and Michelle guide you through a systematic approach to reclaim and organize your new space, turning what could be a daunting task into a manageable project. Perfect for first-year teachers or those moving to a new classroom, this episode provides practical steps to take control of your teaching environment. Episode Highlights: See the space and evaluate:: Begin by evaluating the space. Understand what you've inherited, how the previous teacher organized it, and what might need to go. This first look will help you plan your cleaning and organizing strategy. Ask for clarification: Before throwing anything out, check with administrators or colleagues about what must stay and what can go. Understanding what's essential and what's expendable will streamline the entire process. Clear the space: Pull everything out of cabinets and drawers to get a full view of what you have. This step not only helps in sorting but also in cleaning and reorganizing the space effectively. Categorize the items: Dive into categorizing the items into keep, trash, and donate piles. Further organize the 'keep' items based on their utility and relevance to your teaching needs. Disperse the items: Once sorted, strategically place items back into the space. Use bins and labels to create a system that makes sense for your daily teaching activities and maintains organization throughout the year. SUBMIT YOUR TIME SUCKING HURDLE! Jonathan Defeats the Philistines 14One day Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who carried his armor, Come, let us go over to the Philistine garrison on the other side. But he did not tell his father.2Saul was staying in the outskirts of Gibeah in the pomegranate cave[a]atMigron. The people who were with him were aboutsix hundred men,3includingAhijah the son of Ahitub,Ichabod's brother, son of Phinehas, son of Eli, the priest of theLordin Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.4Withinthe passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistine garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side. The name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.5The one crag rose on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front ofGeba. 6Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, Come, let us go over to the garrison of theseuncircumcised. It may be that theLordwill work for us,for nothing can hinder theLordfrom saving by many or by few.7And his armor-bearer said to him, Do all that is in your heart. Do as you wish.[b]Behold, I am with you heart and soul.8Then Jonathan said, Behold, we will cross over to the men, and we will show ourselves to them.9If they say to us, Wait until we come to you, then we will stand still in our place, and we will not go up to them.10But if they say, Come up to us, then we will go up, for theLordhas given them into our hand. And this shall be the sign to us.11So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, Look, Hebrews are comingout of the holes where they have hidden themselves.12And the men of the garrison hailed Jonathan and his armor-bearer and said, Come up to us, and we will show you a thing. And Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, Come up after me, for theLordhas given them into the hand of Israel.13Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, and his armor-bearer after him. And they fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed them after him.14And that first strike, which Jonathan and his armor-bearer made, killed about twenty men within as it were half a furrow's length in an acre[c]of land.15And there was a panic in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and eventhe raiders trembled, the earth quaked, and it became a very great panic.[d] 16And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitudewas dispersing here and there.[e]17Then Saul said to the people who were with him, Count and see who has gone from us. And when they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor-bearer were not there.18So Saul said to Ahijah, Bring the ark of God here. For the ark of God went at that time with the people[f]of Israel.19Nowwhile Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the camp of the Philistines increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, Withdraw your hand.20Then Saul and all the people who were with him rallied and went into the battle. And behold, every Philistine's sword was against his fellow, and there was very great confusion.21Now the Hebrews who had been with the Philistines before that time and who had gone up with them into the camp, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.22Likewise, when all the men of Israelwho had hidden themselvesin the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were fleeing, they too followed hard after them in the battle.23So theLordsaved Israel that day. And the battle passed beyondBeth-aven. Saul's Rash Vow 24And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day,so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies. So none of the people had tasted food.25Now when all the people[g]came to the forest, behold, there was honey on the ground.26And when the people entered the forest, behold, the honey was dropping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.27But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath,so he put out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes became bright.28Then one of the people said, Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man who eats food this day. And the people werefaint.29Then Jonathan said, My father has troubled the land. See how my eyes have become bright because I tasted a little of this honey.30How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies that they found. For now the defeat among the Philistines has not been great. 31They struck down the Philistines that day fromMichmash toAijalon. And the people were veryfaint.32The peoplepounced on the spoil and took sheep and oxen and calves and slaughtered them on the ground. And the people ate themwith the blood.33Then they told Saul, Behold, the people are sinning against theLordby eatingwith the blood. And he said, You have dealt treacherously; roll a great stone to me here.[h]34And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, Let every man bring his ox or his sheep and slaughter them here and eat, and do not sin against theLordby eating with the blood. So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night and they slaughtered them there.35And Saulbuilt an altar to theLord; it was the first altar that he built to theLord. 36Then Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them until the morning light; let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatever seems good to you. Butthe priest said, Let us draw near to God here.37And Saul inquired of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into the hand of Israel? But he did not answer him that day.38And Saul said, Come here, all you leaders of the people, and know and see how this sin has arisen today.39Foras theLordlives who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.40Then he said to all Israel, You shall be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said to Saul, Do what seems good to you.41Therefore Saul said, OLordGod of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, OLord, God of Israel, give Urim. But if this guilt is in your people Israel, give Thummim.[i]And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped.42Then Saul said,Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan. And Jonathan was taken. 43Then Saul said to Jonathan,Tell me what you have done. And Jonathan told him,I tasted a little honey with the tip of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am; I will die.44And Saul said,God do so to me and more also;you shall surely die, Jonathan.45Then the people said to Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it!As theLordlives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day. So the people ransomed Jonathan, so that he did not die.46Then Saul went up from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place. Saul Fights Israel's Enemies 47When Saul had taken the kingship over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, against the Ammonites, against Edom, against the kings ofZobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned he routed them.48And he did valiantlyand struck the Amalekites and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them. 49Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchi-shua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn wasMerab, and the name of the younger Michal.50And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the commander of his army was Abner the son of Ner,Saul's uncle.51Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son ofAbiel. 52There was hard fighting against the Philistines all the days of Saul. And when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man,he attached him to himself.

1 Samuel 14:1-23 One day Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the Philistine garrison on the other side.” But he did not tell his father. 2 Saul was staying in the outskirts of Gibeah in the pomegranate cave at Mi- gron. The people who were with him were about six hundred men, 3 including Ahijah the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, son of Phinehas, son of Eli, the priest of the Lord in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan had gone. 4 Within the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistine garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side. The name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. 5 The one crag rose on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba. 6 Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.” 7 And his armor-bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Do as you wish. Behold, I am with you heart and soul.” 8 Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will cross over to the men, and we will show ourselves to them. 9 If they say to us, ‘Wait until we come to you,' then we will stand still in our place, and we will not go up to them. 10 But if they say, ‘Come up to us,' then we will go up, for the Lord has given them into our hand. And this shall be the sign to us. ” 11 So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. So the Lord saved Israel that day, and the battle spread beyond Beth-aven.Now the men of Israel were hard-pressed on that day, for Saul had put the people under oath, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food before evening, and before I have avenged myself on my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food. All the people of the land entered the forest, and there was honey on the ground. When the people entered the forest, behold, there was honey dripping; but no man put his hand to his mouth, because the people feared the oath. However, Jonathan had not heard it when his father put the people under oath; so he put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened. Then one of the people responded and said, “Your father strictly put the people under oath, saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food today.'” And the people were weary. Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. See now that my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey. How much more, if only the people had freely eaten today of the spoils of their enemies which they found! For now the defeat among the Philistines has not been great.”They attacked the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. But the people were very tired. So the people loudly rushed upon the spoils, and took sheep, oxen, and calves, and slaughtered them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood. Then observers informed Saul, saying, “Look, the people are sinning against the Lord by eating meat with the blood.” And he said, “You have acted treacherously; roll a large rock to me today.” Then Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, ‘Each one of you bring me his ox or his sheep, and slaughter it here and eat; and do not sin against the Lord by eating it with the blood.'” So all the people brought them that night, each one his ox with him, and they slaughtered them there. And Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first altar that he built to the Lord. Then Saul said, “Let's go down after the Philistines by night and take plunder among them until the morning light, and let's not leave a man among them alive.” And they said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” So the priest said, “Let's approach God here.” So Saul inquired of God: “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You hand them over to Israel?” But He did not answer him on that day. Then Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the people, and investigate and see how this sin has happened today. For as the Lord lives, who saves Israel, even if it is in my son Jonathan, he shall assuredly die!” But not one of all the people answered him. Then he said to all Israel, “You shall be on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.” Therefore, Saul said to the Lord, the God of Israel, “Give a perfect lot.” And Jonathan and Saul were selected by lot, but the people were exonerated. Then Saul said, “Cast lots between me and my son Jonathan.” And Jonathan was selected by lot.So Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him, and said, “I did indeed taste a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am, I must die!” And Saul said, “May God do the same to me and more also, for you shall certainly die, Jonathan!” But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan die, he who has brought about this great victory in Israel? Far from it! As the Lord lives, not even a hair of his head shall fall to the ground, because he has worked with God this day.” So the people rescued Jonathan and he did not die. Then Saul went up from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place. Now when Saul had taken control of the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, the sons of Ammon, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines; and wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment. And he acted valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, and saved Israel from the hands of those who plundered them. Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchi-shua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn was Merab, and the name of the younger, Michal. And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the commander of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul's uncle. Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel. Now the war against the Philistines was severe all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any warrior or any valiant man, he attached him to his staff.

If you've ever wondered, "what is contact dermatitis?" -- you're in for a treat because this episode is going to blow your mind! My guest Dr. JiaDe (Jeff) Yu lectured on contact allergic dermatitis at the Eczema Expo 2023 hosted by the National Eczema Association, and I found his presentation so valuable that I invited him here to share the ins + outs on the topic. We covered a ton of information, but what I can say is that contact dermatitis is complex! Allergic contact dermatitis isn't like a traditional allergy in specific ways (especially when it comes to using antihistamines to get things under control). There's unfortunately a significant issue with both false positive AND false negative results from testing. AND how to treat contact dermatitis will vary depending on several factors (like whether it's a topical problem versus a systemic one). If you aren't familiar with Dr. JiaDe (Jeff) Yu, he's an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School and a dual board-certified adult and pediatric dermatologist practicing at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. He is the Director of Occupational and Contact Dermatitis Clinic and the Associate Director of Clinical Trials. He has a niche interest in pediatric allergic contact dermatitis and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles on allergic contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis in leading dermatology journals. He has received numerous research grants from the Dermatology Foundation, American Contact Dermatitis Society, and the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance to better understand the biomedical underpinnings of allergic contact dermatitis. Dr. Yu is the President-Elect of the American Contact Dermatitis Society and has been invited to lecture nationally and internationally on his areas of expertise. Have you had any personal experience with contact dermatitis? I'd love to hear your story, comments + questions on this topic in the comments below! In this episode: What is contact dermatitis (and is it genetic)? Contact dermatitis compared to food or environmental allergies Which antihistamines don't work for contact dermatitis Top contact dermatitis allergies The antibiotic that's a common allergy If you're reactive to medical gloves... Crazy "hidden" sources of contact dermatitis allergens Testing for contact dermatitis (beware of your results) Quotes "When you do get a cut or a scrape, the skin barrier is physically damaged, therefore allowing the introduction of new allergens into the skin. So when you put on a triple antibiotic, which includes three different antibiotic components, neomycin, bacitracin, as well as polysporin, you give your body the opportunity to learn about these allergens and then become allergic to them. " [10:03] "Disperse dyes are the most common thing that causes contact dermatitis in clothing- specifically disperse blue dyes. " [20:50] "Vitamin B12 is very high in cobalt because vitamin B12 is also known as cobalamin and in the middle of it, there's a cobalt molecule. So, people who have high doses of vitamin B12 can actually get a rash due to the ingestion of cobalt if they have cobalt dermatitis." Footnotes [1] 25:1 This psalm is an acrostic poem, each verse beginning with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet [2] 25:14 Or The secret counsel (ESV) Pentateuch and History: 1 Samuel 14 1 Samuel 14 (Listen) Jonathan Defeats the Philistines 14 One day Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the Philistine garrison on the other side.” But he did not tell his father. 2 Saul was staying in the outskirts of Gibeah in the pomegranate cave1 at Migron. Do as you wish.2 Behold, I am with you heart and soul.” 8 Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will cross over to the men, and we will show ourselves to them. 9 If they say to us, ‘Wait until we come to you,' then we will stand still in our place, and we will not go up to them. 10 But if they say, ‘Come up to us,' then we will go up, for the LORD has given them into our hand. And this shall be the sign to us.” 11 So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, “Look, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves.” 12 And the men of the garrison hailed Jonathan and his armor-bearer and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you a thing.” And Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Come up after me, for the LORD has given them into the hand of Israel.” 13 Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, and his armor-bearer after him. And they fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed them after him. 14 And that first strike, which Jonathan and his armor-bearer made, killed about twenty men within as it were half a furrow's length in an acre3 of land. 15 And there was a panic in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and even the raiders trembled, the earth quaked, and it became a very great panic.4 16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude was dispersing here and there.5 17 Then Saul said to the people who were with him, “Count and see who has gone from us.” And when they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor-bearer were not there. 18 So Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here.” For the ark of God went at that time with the people6 of Israel. 19 Now while Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the camp of the Philistines increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.” 20 Then Saul and all the people who were with him rallied and went into the battle. And behold, every Philistine's sword was against his fellow, and there was very great confusion. 21 Now the Hebrews who had been with the Philistines before that time and who had gone up with them into the camp, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22 Likewise, when all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were fleeing, they too followed hard after them in the battle. 23 So the LORD saved Israel that day. And the battle passed beyond Beth-aven. Saul's Rash Vow 24 And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food. 25 Now when all the people7 came to the forest, behold, there was honey on the ground. 26 And when the people entered the forest, behold, the honey was dropping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath. 27 But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath, so he put out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes became bright. 28 Then one of the people said, “Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food this day.'” And the people were faint. 29 Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. See how my eyes have become bright because I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies that they found. For now the defeat among the Philistines has not been great.” 31 They struck down the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. And the people were very faint. 32 The people pounced on the spoil and took sheep and oxen and calves and slaughtered them on the ground. And the people ate them with the blood. 33 Then they told Saul, “Behold, the people are sinning against the LORD by eating with the blood.” And he said, “You have dealt treacherously; roll a great stone to me here.”8 34 And Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, ‘Let every man bring his ox or his sheep and slaughter them here and eat, and do not sin against the LORD by eating with the blood.'” So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night and they slaughtered them there. 35 And Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first altar that he built to the LORD. 36 Then Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them until the morning light; let us not leave a man of them.” And they said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” But the priest said, “Let us draw near to God here.” 37 And Saul inquired of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into the hand of Israel?” But he did not answer him that day. 38 And Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the people, and know and see how this sin has arisen today. 39 For as the LORD lives who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him. 40 Then he said to all Israel, “You shall be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.” 41 Therefore Saul said, “O LORD God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, O LORD, God of Israel, give Urim. But if this guilt is in your people Israel, give Thummim.”9 And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped. 42 Then Saul said, “Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan.” And Jonathan was taken. 43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him, “I tasted a little honey with the tip of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am; I will die.” 44 And Saul said, “God do so to me and more also; you shall surely die, Jonathan.” 45 Then the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people ransomed Jonathan, so that he did not die. 46 Then Saul went up from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place. Saul Fights Israel's Enemies 47 When Saul had taken the kingship over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, against the Ammonites, against Edom, against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned he routed them. 48 And he did valiantly and struck the Amalekites and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them. 49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchi-shua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn was Merab, and the name of the younger Michal. 50 And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the commander of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul's uncle. 51 Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel. 52 There was hard fighting against the Philistines all the days of Saul. And when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he attached him to himself. (ESV) Gospels and Epistles: 2 Peter 1:12–21 2 Peter 1:12–21 (Listen) 12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body,1 to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things. Christ's Glory and the Prophetic Word 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son,2 with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Marks of the True Christian 9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.8 Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it9 to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Old Testament: 1 Samuel 14 1 Samuel 14 (Listen) Jonathan Defeats the Philistines 14 One day Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the Philistine garrison on the other side.” But he did not tell his father. 2 Saul was staying in the outskirts of Gibeah in the pomegranate cave1 at Migron. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. The Ministry of Reconciliation 11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.2 The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling3 the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 6 Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says,   “In a favorable time I listened to you,    and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 3 We put no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, 4 but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, 5 beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; 6 by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; 7 by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; 8 through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; 9 as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything. 11 We have spoken freely to you,4 Corinthians; our heart is wide open. 12 You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections. 13 In return (I speak as to children) widen your hearts also. The Temple of the Living God 14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 What accord has Christ with Belial?5 Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,   “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them,    and I will be their God,    and they shall be my people.17   Therefore go out from their midst,    and be separate from them, says the Lord,  and touch no unclean thing;    then I will welcome you,18   and I will be a father to you,    and you shall be sons and daughters to me,  says the Lord Almighty.” Footnotes [1] 5:3 Some manuscripts putting it off [2] 5:17 Or creature [3] 5:19 Or God was in Christ, reconciling [4] 6:11 Greek Our mouth is open to you [5] 6:15 Greek Beliar (ESV)
