Leonard Lee Buschel overcame addiction and has devoted his life to giving back to writers in recovery by creating a safe and supportive outlet. Leonard was born into an idyllic Jewish family in North Philadelphia - - he had loving parents and a three-year-old brother. At just two weeks old, Leonard was dealt a blow that would derail the solid middle-class path that was laid out in front of him. His father suffered a fatal heart attack on his way home from his job as postal clerk. As a boy, Leonard gravitated toward the corner candy store where the local bookie and a group of cigar-smoking, streetwise philosophers who bought and sold hot merchandise, became his father figures. It wouldn't be long before Leonard got into smoking marijuana. What's worse is that he wouldn't go a day sober for roughly 40 years. After decades of struggling with an addiction that led him to become a drug dealer, Leonard was ‘struck sober' and has happily been so for 27 years. He is the founder of Writers in Treatment as well as the director of the REEL Recovery Film Festival and Symposium, which he founded in 2008. Leonard also is the editor and publisher of the weekly Addiction/Recovery eBulletin as well as the producer of the annual Experience, Strength and Hope Awards in Los Angeles. He recently published his memoir, HIGH: Confessions of a Cannabis Addict, which is a stunning account of his drug-dealing days and near-death experiences. The REEL Recovery Film Festival: Writers in Treatment is multi-day event is a celebration of film, the arts, writing and creativity. Showcased are filmmakers who make honest films about addiction, alcoholism, behavioral disorders, treatment, and recovery.
Author, publisher, counselor, and Hollywood socialite, Leonard Buschel joins Recovery Uncensored all the way from Los Angeles, California, to discuss his journey through marijuana and MDMA addiction and share about his newly released memoir, HIGH: Confessions of a Cannabis Addict. Recently celebrating 28 years of continuous recovery, Buschel shares how he had no intentions of taking getting clean and sober seriously but something inside him changed at the Arizona rehab during a gruesomely hot summer that made him question his drug and alcohol use and his practice of drug dealing. After losing what he describes as the love of his life, he nearly had a nervous breakdown that lead to the rehab and the beginning of his unsuspected transformation. He navigated through recovery and developed the Reel Recovery Film Festival, Writers in Recovery, and the Addiction and Recovery eBulletin. His film festival is in its 14th year, and in 2016, earned him the Link Award by In Recovery Magazine for promoting recovery "using film, panel discussions, and speakers to understand and encourage compassion for people living with addictive disorders."

Our guest for Episode 32 had a rough start in life. Born with a heart defect and debilitating asthma, Leonard lost his father to a heart attack when he was just 3 weeks old. He grew up fast in Logan, PA, learning about being a man from the guys who hung out on the corner. His only real sense of stability was the home that he lived in for 20 years. He never really felt a sense of confidence until he started selling dope and then he felt like “the man” because he had the good stuff that everyone wanted. Leonard's first dabble with addictive behavior began with a pound of sunflower seeds and an upset stomach inside a movie theatre. Ironically, the last he used ended almost the same way, but this time he found himself sick and sweaty inside a phone booth in California. After a stint in rehab at the Betty Ford Center, Leonard emerged having lost the desire to use drugs and eventually, the desire to use alcohol as well. He has been sober ever since.Today, Leonard Lee Buschel is a California Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, the founder of Writers In Treatment, director of the REEL Recovery Film Festival & Symposium® and the editor/publisher of the weekly Addiction/Recovery eBulletin®. He also directs and produces the annual Experience, Strength and Hope Awards® in Los Angeles. Leonard Lee Buschel marvels that he survived the first 44 years of his life… He still can't believe that he didn't get knocked off by drug dealers, thieves or the copious amounts of drugs he himself ingested. Or locked up for life in a U.S. or international prison. And then again, there were the near-death asthma attacks, open-heart surgery and the brain tumor… Yes, it's a whale of tale—all true—that he writes in his acclaimed autobiography HIGH: Confessions of a Cannabis Addict. Buschel lived to tell about it with vast humor, thrilling storytelling, and great insight. He is an Addiction Expert and California Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. He is editor/publisher of the respected weekly news source Addiction/Recovery eBulletin, director of the 13-year-old REEL Recovery Film Festival and Symposium. and co-founder of Writers in Treatment, which supports creatives who struggle with addiction and self-destructive behaviors. But to get to that eminence, he first had to survive his profligate youth and his 25-year chosen profession as a drug dealer. Buschel's life started skidding off the rails just weeks after his birth, when his postal-worker father died of a massive heart attack on his way home from work, throwing what began as the idyllic family life of a middle-class Philadelphia Jewish family into a skid. Raised by his mother – herself a very quirky character — alongside his older brother, Leonard learned most of his life lessons at the corner candy store under the guidance of the local bookie and the a group of cigar-smoking, streetwise philosophers who thought nothing of buying hot merchandise out of the trunk of a car. Gradually, experimentation with pot and sex unleashed a nearly life-long addiction to both -- and what better way to support a cannabis habit than get into the business? Hijinks, adventure and near-disaster across international and state lines ensued, alongside explorations of the spiritual, metaphysical and psychedelic, oftentimes populated by personal encounters with the likes of poet Allen Ginsburg, Ram Dass, Jiddu Krishnamurti; a series of Woodstock headliners; and Hollywood luminaries including John Cassavetes, Gena Rowlands, Stacy Keach and others. And close friendships with Robert Downey Sr., in particular, and Robert Downey Jr. -- who were often there to lend support in challenging times. He spent much of his drug selling proceeds to see the leading jazz artists, rock music superstars and Broadway shows of the era—always living HIGH!. But finally, in his 50s, in the midst of an emotional breakdown over a shattered relationship, and after “smoking his breakfast, drinking his lunch and snorting his dinner” for many years, Buschel checked himself into the Betty Ford Center. It was hitting the lowest of the lows that so many addicts experience. It was time to see what a month would be like without vodka, weed or ecstasy. For Buschel, it was a revelation! Every moment he was struck by how alive he felt when not under the influence. For him, the power of the program there and at AA, worked wonders. He has now been clean and sober for more than two decades. And while he tinkered with several careers to replace his successful, but illegal profession, he finally found himself drawn to helping other addicts kick the habit and find a stable, healthy, robust sober life. Inspired by the work, he launched the eBulletin, film festival and organization Writers in Treatment, which he cofounded with Robert Downey Sr, that have made him a leader in the recovery field. HIGH is a fascinating read, a lively romp through a very vivid life, but it also a cautionary tale and one that inspires. If someone as committed to the drug life like Leonard Buschel can find a sobriety beyond 25-years of active addiction and drug dealing, than there is hope for those who are inspired by his message that there is a better life awaiting—and that they can do it, too. Here is his book. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1737926601/

Recovery and creativity demand that we have a connection with our inner life. Yes, many people do create even when they are in active addiction or active enabling of a loved one's addictive behavior. Yet something shifts when we get into recovery. We learn to walk through the darkness rather than camp out in it. We come out on the other side into a new experience of light. Special guest Leonard Buschel, CADCA, publisher, and substance abuse counselor, is the founder of Writers in Treatment, the Reel Recovery Film Festival, and Recovery/Addiction eBulletin. He shares what it means to find the divine connection.
RC2C broadcasting from the 39th Annual NAATP Leadership Conference in Austin, Texas - May 21 - 23, 2017 - interview with Leonard Buschel, founder of the Reel Recovery Film Festival and the Addiction e-Bulletin
All people seek to connect with the energy that takes us from the mundane to the Divine. On our way, we may, as Carl Jung wrote, “knock at the wrong address.” Those who make their living as writers, actors, artists, and all of us, as we seek to express creatively, find that recovery shows us the way to the “right address”—our true connection with spirituality. Special guest Leonard Buschel, CADCA, publisher and substance abuse counselor, is the founder of Writers in Treatment, the Reel Recovery Film Festival, and Recovery/Addiction eBulletin. He shares what it means to find the divine connection. Learn more about Leonard's work at writersintreatment.org.
Reel Recovery Film Festival creator Leonard Buschel has become an advocate for recovery in ways that no one else has—by creating Reel Recovery, which screens movies relating to addiction in Los Angeles, Manhattan, San Francisco and Ft. Lauderdale, among other cities. Every festival features live Q&A's with either well-known recovery advocates or people involved with the films; previous participants include Ben Stiller (for the screening of Permanent Midnight), Ed Begley, Jr. and Duran Duran's John Taylor. In his 20+ years of sobriety, Buschel has also created Writers in Treatment, which helps anyone who works with the written word into rehab, and hosts the annual Experience, Strength and Hope Awards. In this episode, we talke about forgoing the Rockettes in order to smoke pot, so-called casual crack smoking and how finding a treatment center with an 800 number can help launch you into recovery, among other topics.
