The figures are startling - 2.1 million Brazilians have a clinical addiction to betting and 7.5 million are problem gamblers. Women now comprise 40% of all gamblers, having been 25% just a decade ago. Online sports and casino betting have exploded in Brazil to make it one of the largest gambling markets in the world. The self-help group Gamblers Anonymous says it is receiving thousands of calls each month and millions of Brazilians are estimated be suffering financial, emotional or relationship problems as a result of betting. Camilla Mota talks to football fans in Sao Paulo about why they are gambling on their team's result. She speaks to a man who gambled away $75, 000 on a corporate credit card, a businesswoman who locked herself in the toilet of her family home in order to bet in secret and meets two psychiatrists offering treatment to addicts at a special clinic. What can be done to protect problem gamblers and avoid driving legal gambling underground?

Why Quitting is So Hard: Understanding Addiction

Health Matters

Addiction affects millions of people, yet stigma and misunderstanding often prevent people from seeking help. In this episode of Health Matters, host Courtney Allison speaks with Dr. Jonathan Avery, an addiction psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, about the realities of addiction and recovery. Dr. Avery explains that addiction is more than a problem of willpower. Drawing on research and clinical experience, he discusses how genetics, mental health, trauma, social factors, and brain chemistry all play a role in the development of substance use disorders and behavioral addictions. The conversation examines how addictive behaviors, from alcohol use and opioid dependence to gambling and social media use, affect the brain's reward system and why quitting can be so difficult. Dr. Avery also shares how newer treatments, including medications and emerging research on GLP-1 medications, are changing the landscape of addiction care. Finally, Dr. Avery discusses the importance of reducing stigma, building supportive communities, and recognizing that recovery is possible. He offers practical advice for people who may be struggling themselves as well as guidance for supporting loved ones with compassion and understanding. Chapters 00:00 – What Is Addiction? Why addiction is more than a substance, the role of trauma and mental health, and what happens in the brain 05:05 – Gambling, Screens, and Modern Addictions How behavioral addictions affect the brain and why smartphones have changed the landscape 09:00 – Treatment, Recovery, and New Hope Available therapies, medications, emerging GLP-1 research, and why most people do get better 11:30 – Breaking Stigma and Supporting Recovery Why connection matters, how addiction overlaps with mental health, and ways to support loved ones Key Topics Covered Addiction Recovery Substance use disorders Alcohol use disorder Opioid addiction Fentanyl epidemic Behavioral addictions Gambling addiction Social media addiction Gaming addiction Nicotine and vaping Dopamine and reward pathways Withdrawal Mental health and addiction Trauma and addiction Addiction stigma Recovery support Community and connection Addiction treatment Medication-assisted treatment GLP-1 medications Self-medication hypothesis Depression and addiction Anxiety and addiction Addiction psychiatry Key Takeaway Addiction is a complex health condition influenced by brain biology, mental health, life experiences, and environment, not simply a lack of willpower. While quitting can be challenging, effective treatments, supportive communities, and growing understanding of addiction are helping more people achieve lasting recovery. Reaching out for help is often the first and most important step.   Bio: Jonathan Avery, M.D., is an addiction psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and vice chair of addiction psychiatry, a professor of clinical psychiatry, and the Stephen P. Tobin and Dr. Arnold M. Cooper Professor in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine. He is the program director for the addiction psychiatry fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine. He also serves as the medical director of the NBA's Anti-Drug Program. Dr. Avery graduated from the New York University School of Medicine and completed his psychiatry residency at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. During residency, he was selected as a Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry Fellow, served as co-chief resident in his final year, and received several awards for his clinical and academic work. He then completed a fellowship in addiction psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine before joining the faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Avery has published widely in addiction psychiatry, with work spanning clinician attitudes toward patients with addiction, treatment approaches for substance use disorders, and the intersection of mental illness and addiction. He is the founder of the NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine Program for Substance Use and Stigma of Addiction, and his research on stigma has been supported by multiple national grants and awards. He has served on the editorial board for the DSM-5 Clinical Cases book and is the editor and author of more than 10 books, including Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment and The Stigma of Addiction: An Essential Guide. His forthcoming book, Thriving with Addiction: A New Roadmap for Lasting Recovery and Health (Prometheus Books, 2026), explores how recovery can become a pathway to improved brain and physical health. Dr. Avery is also the host of the Thriving with Addiction podcast, where he interviews leading researchers, clinicians, athletes and public figures about addiction, recovery and behavior change. He has received numerous awards for his clinical and academic work, including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Faculty Innovation in Education Award and the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the New York County Psychiatric Society.

The online sports media platform RG recently ran a piece on gambling addiction in adolescents and young adults. The story caught my eye as we here at CPYU believe that sports gambling is the next big frontier for adolescent addiction. Listen to what RG says about peer influence and the role of social circles in teen gambling: Peer influence plays a significant role in gambling behaviors among adolescents and young adults. During this stage, individuals are heavily influenced by their social circles, often adopting behaviors and attitudes that align with those of their peers. If gambling is normalized within a peer group, individuals may feel pressure to participate to gain social acceptance or maintain friendships. Social media and online communities frequently promote gambling as an exciting or glamorous activity, creating a digital environment that reinforces risky behavior.” Parents, talk to your kids about online gambling, and monitor their online activity to prevent them from taking part.

Most people can buy a lottery ticket, join an office March Madness pool, or place an occasional sports bet without it becoming a problem. So why do some people lose their savings, relationships, careers, and even homes because they can't stop gambling? In this episode, host Gabe Howard sits down with certified gambling counselor Eric Webber, MA, to explore the realities behind gambling addiction and why it deserves to be treated as a serious mental health condition. This conversation examines the explosion of legal sports betting, in-game prop bets, fantasy sports, and gambling advertisements that have made betting more accessible — and more difficult to avoid — than ever before. Eric explains how modern betting platforms are intentionally designed to deliver frequent rewards that keep people engaged, and why "just stop gambling" is no more helpful than telling someone with depression to "just cheer up." Listeners will learn: how treatment for gambling addiction works and what to expect why gambling addiction is a real behavioral addiction, even without substances involved the critical role of peer support in long-term recovery potential warning signs that casual gambling may be turning into compulsive behavior If you've ever wondered when gambling crosses the line from entertainment to addiction, this conversation may change the way you think about betting forever."People don't lose everything because they enjoy gambling. The academic ethnography examines how slot machines—once a marginal casino afterthought—now generate most gambling revenue, driven largely by local repeat players rather than tourists. Schüll interviews designers, executives, and addicted gamblers, showing how machines are engineered to induce a self-erasing "zone" akin to flow states, prioritizing extended play over winning. Jerry and Stably debate her capitalism-focused framing, question whether her extreme case studies represent typical gamblers, and connect the addictive "zone" to evolutionary mismatch theory and Schopenhauer's concept of denying the Will. They also touch on Nevada's pre-1969 ownership rules that once limited corporate casino ownership. Despite its dry, jargon-heavy academic style, both hosts found it compelling and recommend it.

We talk about why he believes alcohol and gambling advertising in sport needs the same scrutiny we've seen applied to tobacco, and why this conversation matters so much to him.And then there's the part of Luke's story that surprised everyone. From hiding fantasy novels in the toilet as a tough country kid playing first grade footy, to becoming one of the biggest names on BookTok and signing a two-book fantasy series deal with Atria Books. It's a brilliant reminder that it's never too late to embrace who you really are. This one covers addiction, advocacy, masculinity and reinvention. Text and Be HeardStaying stopped is the elusive question, and we go straight at it: lots of people can quit for a stretch, but lasting recovery takes a foundation that doesn't crack the moment life gets stressful. We talk about why “white-knuckling it” fades, why fear-based thinking keeps you stuck, and what actually helps you live with real peace instead of constant anxiety.nnWe break down three pillars that shape how you live day to day: character, emotional intelligence, and spiritual foundation. Character means getting clear on what you believe in and who you want to be, values like honesty, hope, courage, and discipline. Emotional intelligence means knowing what you feel in real time and being able to say it out loud so you can choose a healthy response. Spiritual grounding means connecting to God or a higher power, paying attention to who's in your circle, and letting support and meaning do their work.nnWe also connect recovery to the practical parts of life that keep you steady: relationships, mental health, physical health, finances, and goals you can act on today. When you know who you are and where you're going, distractions and detours get easier to spot and easier to correct.nnIf you want a clearer relapse prevention plan and a stronger sobriety mindset, listen now, share this with someone who needs it, and subscribe so you don't miss what's next. The former Canberra Raiders player on hiding his fantasy reading habits as a kid in Western Queensland, the joy of doing hard things, and how books brought him back from the brink. Warning: Discussion of suicide.Luke was a sensitive kid, growing up on a cattle station in Western Queensland. He loved being transported by fantasy novels — following the quests, battles and magic they offered him.Luke found release in these books, beyond the hard work and zipped lips of the strong men he saw around him.Luke didn't fit into that mould, though he did plenty of work on the farm and loved playing footy. The sport helped him find a place to belong in his world. As a young man, he scored a place in the Canberra Raiders NRL team, and was introduced to the world of gambling. This quickly spiralled into an addiction, and Luke abused drugs and alcohol to numb the pain of this period.Despite being at the height of his young life, and earning hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, Luke couldn't pay for his groceries. He couldn't put fuel in the car. He was spending all his money on betting. When things hit rock bottom, Luke relied on the strongest, most loving person he knew — his mum.He understood, somehow, that to get out of the deep hole he was in, he had to find his way back to reading.Further informationLuke is writing his first two fantasy novels, which will be released in early 2027 under Atria Books Australia, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. If you need someone to speak to, you can always call or chat online with Lifeline on 13 11 14.This episode was produced by Alice Moldovan. FILM FESTIVAL TICKETS: https://buytickets.at/thedopeyfoundation/2216905 PATREON: www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast Dave and Alan Manheim return for another classic Dopey Tuesday conversation, this time recorded outside the Dopey studio because of ongoing production issues. Alan immediately launches into a breakdown of his “mutual redevelopment” Manhattan apartment and reminisces about living there for over 50 years while Dave complains about the transformation of his childhood bedroom into the Dopey studio. The conversation drifts into Blake Mycoskie from TOMS Shoes and the Dopey Nation's reaction to a less drug-heavy episode before Alan unveils his newest entrepreneurial fantasy: buying 30 acres upstate to create a solar-powered greenhouse capable of producing meat without animals. This naturally leads into stories about Alan's previous failed business ideas, including indoor lobster farming, eclipse merchandise, imported Chinese knives, underwear futures, cryptocurrency disasters, and the legendary JJ and the Jelly Bean children's books. Dave and Alan then pivot hard into Knicks playoff mania, gambling talk, and the absurdity of spending $1,000 for nosebleed seats at Madison Square Garden. Alan shares a story about his cardiologist's son cashing out a massive preseason Spurs futures bet while Dave reflects on how his father never really took him anywhere growing up besides zoos, museums, and nursing homes. Dave jokes that this emotional neglect may explain how he became a heroin addict in the first place. The episode also dives into Spotify and Patreon comments, listener criticism of Heart Attack Doug, vape addiction rituals, Kratom recovery, and the strange comfort of hearing from the same diehard Dopey listeners every week. The teaser cuts off right before the controversial Patreon comments section, ending with Dave shamelessly trying to convert listeners into Patreon subscribers. FULL SHOW ONLY ON PATREON! One survey found that one third of 11 year-old boys had gambled in the last year. Smartphones and gambling apps are now driving the numbers up among children and teens. As Christians we need to embrace a biblically-faithful theological perspective that not only informs our personal behaviors and choices, but which we can pass on to our kids as they grow up in a world that is doing everything it can to nurture them into a lifetime of gambling. That's what we talk about in this episode of Youth Culture Matters.
