Mark Lucia, Director of Programming at the KindBridge Research Institute, brings his exceptional experience from being a special forces medic to mastering public health and behavioral health program design. Join us as we uncover the systemic barriers that hinder service members and veterans from accessing help for gambling addiction, a problem exacerbated by deeply ingrained institutional stigma. Mark's relentless efforts to reshape policies and heighten awareness, evidenced by groundbreaking state-level campaigns in Colorado, are crucial steps towards fostering hope and healing within military communities. Gambling is not just a pastime; within military settings, it reveals its darker side, with slot machines on overseas bases raising concerns about institutionalized gambling. The stigma surrounding mental health care in the military often prevents service members from seeking necessary support, driven by fears of negative career repercussions. This episode sheds light on the surprising prevalence of gambling addiction among veterans, encouraging a dialogue about classifying it as a health issue and finding the appropriate interventions. In this episode, you will hear: Exploring the hidden epidemic of gambling addiction within military communities Insights from Mark Lucia on systemic barriers and stigma preventing service members from seeking help Examination of gambling facilities on overseas military bases and their impact on mental health Discussion on reclassifying gambling addiction as a health issue and necessary interventions Challenges faced by the Department of Defense in recognizing and addressing gambling disorders Highlighting successful awareness campaigns and policy changes led by Mark Lucia Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. In this powerful and heartfelt episode of Addicted to Recovery, hosts Christopher White and Max Thomas sit down with guest Alex, a fellow recovering addict, to explore his lived experience of gambling addiction. The conversation starts with a nostalgic reflection as Alex and Max realise they once attended the same school — both unaware at the time that beneath the surface, they were already battling the early signs of addiction. Alex shares his story openly, tracing the roots of his compulsive gambling back to childhood, shaped by family separation, emotional instability, and early exposure to betting through his father's habits.Alex's journey is marked by emotional vulnerability, financial ruin, and the manipulation that so often accompanies addiction. He speaks candidly about his pattern of deception, the toxic cycle of winning and chasing losses, and the crushing shame that kept him isolated for years. His story highlights the often invisible nature of gambling addiction — one that doesn't always carry the visible signs of other dependencies but is just as destructive.Throughout the conversation, Max and Chris reflect on the shared emotional struggles underlying addiction — the inner void, the hunger for validation, and the disconnect between how they appeared to the world and how they felt inside. Alex recounts the moments where addiction had him trapped, including the extraordinary highs and lows of gambling away over £120,000 in a single weekend, and the devastating impact this had on his relationships, self-worth and mental health.Despite the setbacks, Alex also shares how he has begun rebuilding his life. He talks about finding strength through community, his experiences in rehabilitation, and the importance of peer support. Now four months clean — the longest since his addiction began — Alex has also founded Walking and Talking, a safe and non-judgemental group for those struggling with gambling, offering connection and support through simple conversation and companionship. The episode closes on an uplifting note, with Max and Chris emphasising the importance of fellowship, recovery programmes, self-reflection, and honest conversation. Together, they highlight that addiction is about far more than substances or behaviours — it's about the internal battles and emotional wounds we try to numb — and that lasting recovery is possible through connection, action, and community.

Gambling addiction is often seen as an individual problem, but its effects ripple far beyond the person placing the bets. For families, it can lead to financial instability, emotional distress, and fractured relationships. In this episode, Katie shares her personal journey of discovering her husband's gambling problem and how she and her children moved forward. Speaking as a parent and a teacher with twenty years of experience, Katie argues that more recognition is needed about how gambling problems impact families, especially young people. Noting a lack of resources and supports for children experiencing gambling harms, she developed a workbook. It's a tool for parents, family members, teachers and counsellors to help children understand and cope when compulsive gambling disrupts their lives. Katie's workbook is available on Amazon and is called All Bets Are Off: Hope and Healing When a Loved One's Gambling Addiction is Destroying Everything. Listen to this impactful interview with Katie and hear: What spouses and family members can do when a loved one isn't ready to stop gambling How to support children when a parent's gambling is negatively impacting the family What help is available for spouses, family members and chldren experiencing gambling harms To read a summary of this episode go to the blog at www.gamblingproblemhelp.ca. In the first half, certified counselor Howard Riback, a former gambling addict, shared his journey with gambling, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility. "Gambling itself can be as much fun as having a drink or two," he noted but warned against the dangers of excess. Reflecting on his past, he admitted, "I abused it," acknowledging that many who struggle with gambling often fail to recognize when to stop. Riback described the allure of gambling, particularly his love for blackjack, which began at a young age. "I was enamored... not just for the money... but I love the math behind it," he explained. He cautioned that while gambling can be entertaining, it becomes problematic when individuals lose control. He advised setting limits, recommending that gamblers treat their budget as an expense for entertainment, akin to a night out. "If you go with 200 bucks," knowing you're not going to see it again, "that's a great attitude," he said. But when people take out their credit cards or have a credit line established, "that's when the trouble begins." Riback also highlighted the growing prevalence of gambling through online platforms and sports betting, which he believes complicates the landscape. Ultimately, while a small percentage of gamblers face issues, the majority enjoy gambling responsibly. He pointed out that denial is common among problem gamblers until the consequences become unbearable for them. Riback concluded with a message of hope for those struggling, urging them to seek help.------------In the latter half, C2C's investigative reporter Cheryll Jones shared her interview with ufologist Craig Campobasso, who delved into the fascinating world of different extraterrestrials and hybrids visiting Earth. Claiming there are "82 extraterrestrial races that have either visited us, are visiting us, or are living and working here as hybrids among us," his research includes first-hand meetings with contactees and a deep dive into decades of MUFON archives. Elaborating on the concept of hybridization (the mixing of human and alien DNA), he said "Earth has been speculated to be an experimental laboratory for extraterrestrials." He told Cheryll that both good and bad exist within every alien race (including Greys, Reptilians, hybrids, and Nordics), and urged listeners to "judge the individual and not the race."Campobasso posited that the ancient Lemurians (and other human races) currently live underground or in the "inner Earth" and travel in subterranean bullet trains from one end of the planet to the other in a short amount of time. He also touched on the enigmatic "Men in Black," suggesting they may be connected to covert government operations or even extraterrestrial forces like the Draconians. On the topic of extraterrestrial technology, Campobasso explained that many ships are driven by the consciousness of their commanders, stating, "Their own DNA was actually put into the metal of the ship." He has concluded that such advanced technology is now in the hands of governments.During the last half-hour, George featured an excerpt from his 5/26/21 interview with historian Richard Dolan on UFOs and disclosure.
