Cat watches in horror as the Freys spring their trap. King Robb and many loyal northerners are cut down, and after she murders Lord Walder's grandson, Cat is also dispatched. Simon and Mackelly rend their garments.Chapter Review:The music is terrible, the food unappealing, but Edmure Tully seems in love with his new bride Roslin - who maintains her rictus smile throughout. The drinking is heavy, particularly from the GreatJon Umber. Lord Walder Frey calls for the bedding, the borderline sexual assault whereby the newlyweds are stripped and carried to the marital bed, and King Robb agrees. When the lovers leave, Catelyn Stark's hackles raise when Edwyn Frey pushes Darcey Mormont aside, when she only asked to dance. At this point, the band finally finds a tune: The Rains of Castermere - the song whose only message is “Don't cross the Lannisters.” Crossbow bolts rain down and King Robb and Cat are both struck. A melee ensues, but the Stark guards are outmanned and unable to do more than fight a rearguard.Northmen rush in, but they fight for the wrong side. Cat holds a knife to Jinglebell and threatens/bargains with Lord Walder - but he doesn't care what she does and a figure who appears to be Roose Bolton delivers the coup de grace to his King. Cat cuts Jinglebell's throat but she herself has her throat cut, as she thinks of Ned and her children.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Catelyn Stark - Mother of King Robb.Robb Stark - Eldest child of Catelyn Stark. Cat rides through the rain to Edmure's wedding venue. Along the way, she manages to offend both her brother and her son. Robb contemplates his heir, and his choice to fill the role until he has children isn't one that Cat can get behind. We get confirmation about the fate of Balon Greyjoy. Finally, Robb unveils his plan to unseat the Iron Born from Moat Cailin.Chapter Review:Catelyn Stark rides with her son King Robb's host through non-stop rain from Riverrun to the Twins, on their way to Lord Edmure's wedding. Robb's young queen Jeyne had trouble saying goodbye to her husband, but eventually Robb sent her back to Riverrun, where she'll await his return. Edmure is nervous about his future bride. He can't see any reason Lord Walder Frey would pick a beautiful daughter to marry to him. Edmure's shallow thinking irks Cat and her retort offends him.King Robb tells his mother that he needs to have an heir. With Bran and Rickon dead, and no children conceived between him and Jeyne, he's considering Jon Snow. Cat points out that Jon is a brother of the Night's Watch, so can't hold lands or titles. Robb figures if he sends the Night's Watch 100 men, they'll find a way to let Jon go. After that, Robb will legitimize Jon and he'll act as Robb heir until Robb has children. Cat can't support the plan. Robb says it doesn't matter, he's the king.Cat is present when a ship captain tells Robb and his council that Balon Greyjoy is dead and his brother Euron has assumed the Seastone Chair. Robb then tells of his plan to get past the Iron Born at Moat Cailin. He sends two of his officers to rouse the crannogmen to help his host navigate the bogs of the Neck. He will use their knowledge of the area to attack Moat Cailin from multiple sides. Robb plans to send Cat to Seaguard for safe keeping. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Robb returns to Riverrun, where he exchanges forgiveness of transgressions with his mother. Cat for freeing Jamie. Robb for marrying a non-Frey. Robb also scolds his uncle Edmure for preventing Tywin and his army from reaching the Westerlands, where Robb's force laid in wait. All consider ways to appease House Frey's wounded ego. Simon and Mackelly peruse belated wedding gifts.Chapter Review:Catelyn Stark is alerted that her son King Robb has commanded that she join him in the great hall. There, she is quickly forgiven by her son for freeing Jamie Lannister. Lord Rickard Karstark is not so forgiving. He calls her actions treason. After the hall has been cleared, Robb introduces Cat to a group of strangers who surround him. Ser Rolph Spicer, his sister Sybell Westerling, and her children. The last of those children he introduces as Jeyne, his new bride and queen. Cat realizes immediately that this means they've lost the support of the Freys, as Robb agreed to marry a Frey to cement the house's allegiance to him.King Robb and Brynden Blackfish Tully then lay into Cat's brother Ser Edmure Tully for harassing Tywin's army, as it tried to ford the Red Fork on it's way back to the Westerlands. It turns out that Robb and his force were waiting on Tywin's army and planned to pin them in the west or destroy them. That would've allowed Stannis Baratheon to destroy the Lannisters in King's Landing. Instead, Edmure's victory over Tywin allowed him to get word of Stannis' attack on King's Landing and swoop in and save the city.Cat says none of that matters, at the moment. More important is winning back the north from the Iron Born. Robb thinks the only chance they have of success is to earn back the Frey's fealty. There must be something he can offer to Lord Walder Frey. Cat doesn't think it is something, as much as it is someone.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Catelyn "Cat" Stark - Eldest child of Hoster Tully, widow of Ned Stark, father of King Robb.King Robb Stark: Eldest son of Eddard "Ned" and Cat Stark. The King in the North and King of the Trident.Jeyne Westerling: Eldest daughter of Lord Gawen and Sybell Westerling. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The sea has come to Winterfell. Bran is forced to cede the seat of House Stark to Theon Greyjoy. Mikken the smith is killed and Hodor beaten. Meanwhile, Theon assures all that they'll be treated kindly as long as they follow orders. Simon and Mackelly smell something fishy. Chapter Review: Bran has an extended wolf-dream in which Summer tries to escape the walled godswood. The wolf has no inclination to climb, but his Bran-half leads him up a tree. Summer slips and falls. On impact, Bran awakens to a pain in his shoulder. He hopes Summer is OK. A stranger enters Bran's room followed by Theon Greyjoy. Theon tells Bran to come down and inform the citizens of their new ruler. Bran, Rickon, Maester Luwin, the Walders, and the Reeds, are brought to the main hall. The 30 or so Iron Islanders have gathered the other citizens of Winterfell. Hayhead has a nasty wound, Alebelly has been killed, and Palla (who played with Bran and the Walders in the godswood) has been raped. Theon demands obedience, but Mikken the smith is having none of it. He spits vitriol at Theon until a spear is thrust through his neck and he drowns on his own blood. Fulfilling more of Jojen Reed's prophetic dream. Hodor wails in dismay at Mikken's death and is beaten by Theon's men. All the while Theon claims that the people will find him a fair and gentle lord. The prisoner Reek and Osha both pledge fealty to Theon and are given their freedom. Bran sees the second of these as quite the betrayal, although less than Theon's. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Brandon (Bran) Stark - Middle son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. He was pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister and lost the use of his legs. Maester Luwin - Maester in the service of house Stark at Winterfell. Rickon Stark - Youngest son of Ned and Cat Stark. Hodor - Huge but simple man who carries Bran Stark wherever he wishes to go. Big Walder Frey - Grandson of Lord Walder Frey. Ward of Winterfell. Little Walder Frey - Grandson of Lord Walder Frey. Ward of Winterfell. Osha - Wildling captured by the Starks now held as servant/prisoner in Winterfell. Theon Greyjoy - Heir to the Iron Islands. Former ward of Winterfell. Mikken - Smith of Winterfell. Ser Rodrik Cassel - Master-at-arms and castellan of Winterfell. Reek - Accomplice to Bolton's bastard son Ramsay. Captured by Rodrik Cassel and held at Winterfell. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Bran and the Reeds exchange dreams after Bran accepts that Jojen really can dream of the future. None of the dreams portend good news for Bran and Winterfell. Meanwhile, the fracas between the Boltons and the Manderlys worsens and Lady Hornwood is killed. Mackelly and Simon discuss whether fate is immutable. Chapter Review: Maester Luwin has news of the King in the North's victory at Oxcross, but the Frey's uncle's demise. Brandon Stark should be happy, but Osha's warning that Robb is marching south when he should be marching north continues to unsettle him. The Walders seem far more comfortable with the bad news they received, bickering playfully over the complexities of the Frey succession. It dawns on Bran that this very much fulfills Jojen Reed's dream that the Frey's would be fed worse meat but seem to enjoy it more. Later, Jojen tells Bran that he is a warg. Someone able to enter the mind of an animal and control it. His dreams of Summer aren't dreams at all. Jojen reveals his other “green-dream” - the ones that he reckons are pure prophecy. The sea will come to Winterfell and drown the people within. He had the dream before he arrived but now he's able to name some of the people he saw drowned. Bran tries to warn these people but most aren't concerned, and the one who does listen (Alebelly) simply stops bathing. Ser Rodrik arrives back from the Hornwood lands. Quite the mess. Roose Bolton's bastard has coerced Lady Hornwood to marry him and name him as her heir. He's abused and murdered her. Ser Rodrik has killed the bastard, and captured his malodorous sidekick Reek who he intends to keep around to testify when Robb returns. In the meantime, houses Manderly and Bolton are fighting in the Hornwood lands and Rodrik doesn't have the men to put a stop to it. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Brandon (Bran) Stark - Middle son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. He was pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister and lost the use of his legs. Maester Luwin - A maester in the service of house Stark at Winterfell. Big Walder Frey - Grandson of Lord Walder Frey. Ward of Winterfell. Little Walder Frey - Grandson of Lord Walder Frey. Ward of Winterfell. Lady Donella Hornwood - Lost her son and husband in the Riverlands fighting for Robb. Forced to marry Roose Bolton's bastard and name him her heir. Killed by her new husband. Reek - Accomplice to Roose Bolton's bastard son. Captured by Rodrik Cassel and held at Winterfell. Bolton's Bastard - Illegitimate son of Roose Bolton. Husband of the unwilling Donella Hornwood. Killed by Ser Rodrik Cassel. Meera Reed - Sixteen-year-old daughter of Howland Reed. Jojen Reed - Thirteen-year-old son of Howland Reed. Bran enjoys the Reeds' company. Jojen reveals that he has the greensight allowing him to dream of the future. He offers to trade dreams with Bran. Things get tense and Summer threatens the Reeds. They avoid the wolves and later Meera shares another of Jojen's dreams with Bran. Mackelly and Simon have a go at oneirocriticism. Chapter Review: Brandon Stark is enjoying the company of Meera and Jojen Reed. The other northern dignitaries have left, and the three are frolicking with Summer in the Godswood. Meera shows her skill with trident and net. Bran shows off his and Summer's circus-stunts. Jojen reveals that he has the greensight: his dreams are prophecies. Bran wants to know his future, but Jojen wants to hear about Bran's own dreams. Jojen knows a surprising amount already. The three-eyed raven has visited him since he nearly succumbed to a fever as a child. Jojen's dream is of a winged-wolf shackled to earth by stone chains, that the raven cannot cut. Jojen knows that Bran can inhabit Summer, but this all gets too close to home for Bran. Summer, and later Shaggydog, attack the Reeds, who are lucky to be good tree-climbers. We learn that Roose Bolton's bastard son has kidnapped and married the widow Hornwood. This has been countered by Lord Manderly occupying the Hornwood lands and castles. Ser Rodrik has gone to knock some heads together. Maester Luwin dismisses greensight as a forgotten fable, that if it ever existed, is long gone. His own experiments with magic proved (to him) that it doesn't exist. Bran is relieved and disappointed. If magic did exist he could still hope for a cure to his paralysis. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Brandon (Bran) Stark - Middle son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. He was pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister and lost the use of his legs. Bran hosts a harvest feast for all the visiting dignitaries at Winterfell. It's kind of fun for a while. Howland Reed's children arrive to the surprise of all. Bran hits the hay when the dancing starts in earnest. In his dream, he sees the Reeds visit the godswood and stroke Summer. Mackelly and Simon cast their third eye over the scene. Chapter Review: Bran Stark hosts the feast and directs each course to be offered first to a different lord, to ensure diplomatic equivalence. The food is good. The scene is amiable, but Bran daydreams of Summer in the godswood. Unexpectedly, Meera and Jojen Reed arrive from Greywater Watch. Bran has never met a crannogman before. They express their fealty and their great interest in meeting the direwolves. The party continues until the dancing makes Bran yearn for bed. Hodor obliges. In his dream, Bran sees through Summer's eyes the approaching Jojen and Meera. Jojen intuits the nature of the wolves, noting that Summer is stronger than he knows. When he touches Summer's muzzle Bran is disconnected and lapses into his familiar dream of falling. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Brandon (Bran) Stark - Middle son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. He was pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister and lost the use of his legs. Bran, as the Stark in Winterfell, must welcome and entertain a succession of Northern nobility as they come to petition for favors and to vie for the hand of the recently widowed Donella Hornwood (who happens to be the Lady of a large tract of valuable land). He's not thrilled, but Simon and Mackelly are.Chapter Review:Bran Stark and Hodor watch the young nobles, squires, and pages practicing in the yard. The Freys come over and verbally abuse Hodor, who is unaffected by their cruelty, but Bran isn't. Maester Luwin intervenes before things get heated.Bran, Luwin, and Ser Rodrik Cassel host representatives of houses: Manderly, Hornwood, Umber, Glover, Tallhart, and Cerwyn. They all want something, and all have a plan for Lady Hornwood's hand. Her own plan seems to involve Ser Rodrik to the amusement of Maester Luwin. What's within their power is granted, but most serious matters (including Lady Hornwood) are deferred until King Robb can decide. Lady Hornwood is troubled by what Roose Bolton's bastard and presumed heir is up to in the Dreadfort. As should we all.Cley Cerwyn mentions Stannis' accusation that Joffrey is the product of incest and none other than the Kingslayer's son. This discombobulates Bran. That night he dreams of the raven who pecks open a third eye for Bran through which he sees a blonde man pushing him to his doom. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Bran is seeking to understand the meaning of both the comet and the incessant howling of the direwolves. There are lots of opinions. He's increasingly in sync with his direwolf. When he dreams, he doesn't just dream of being a wolf, he sees through Summer's eyes. Mackelly and Simon ponder the implications. Chapter Review: Nobody can sleep because Shaggydog and Summer howl all night. The direwolves are confined to the Godswood, and aren't happy about it. The Winterfell cast all have an opinion as to why the wolves are howling, none of which are much use. Similarly the chorus all have a theory about the comet - but again, it's just hot air (well apart from Old Nan who is unerringly accurate: “Dragons!”, but nobody believes her). The two Walder Freys have arrived (fostered as part of the Twins-crossing deal with their grandfather Walder). They are rambunctious and fun. One of their games led to Rickon getting knocked down, and Shaggydog bit a Walder. Brotherhood Without Manners is back at it again with the next chapter from their full spoiler reread of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. This time reading Catelyn 9. In this chapter Cat and her son, Robb arrive at the formidable house of Frey the Twins. The Bannermen of house Stark are furious to see that they are not welcomed openly by the Freys.
