Bring out your dead! Though the term isn't used often, necromancy as a concept has a major place in ASOIAF. It's a deep topic: from wights beyond the Wall in the middle of nowhere to Ser Robert Strong at the Red Keep itself… From Beric Dondarrion and Lady Stoneheart to ancient tales as far east as Asshai and as far west as the Iron Isles, not to mention real world influences both historical and fictional.

Send us a textBrienne is held captive by the Brotherhood without Banners, as she battles the infection caused by her wounds. When she recovers, she's brought before Lady Stoneheart - who is Catelyn Stark. Brienne stands accused of oath-breaking and must deliver Jamie Lannister or die. Simon and Mackelly weigh the possibilities. Chapter Review:Brienne of Tarth is tied to a horse in agony from her wounds and their inevitable infection. She drifts in and out of fever-dreams. When she finally rouses with the fever broken, Thoros of Myr explains a few things: Lem should have been protecting the inn, she's got terrible facial wounds from Biter, and she's here to answer to Lady Stoneheart, the Brotherhood's new leader, for her crimes. The lion-pommeled sword and the letter signed by Tommen do her no favors. She's taken to Lady Stoneheart, who is mostly silent allowing Lem and others to hector Brienne with accusations. She contends that both girls were gone, that Jaime gave her the sword and the letter to allow her to rescue Sansa - but it falls on deaf ears. Finally Lady Stoneheart speaks, she's unintelligible to the uninitiated. But she demands that Brienne bring her Jaime - or she along with Pod and Ser Hyle will be hanged. Brienne cannot agree so the three are dragged to trees and strung up. She cries out a single word as the chapter ends. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Merrett Frey is lured to a ransom payment by the Brotherhood without Banners. They have his great nephew Petyr Pimple. Upon arrival he learns that his kinsman is dead, and that he'll be joining him because Catelyn Stark points the finger at him for his involvement in the Red Wedding. Simon and Mackelly are almost as speechless as she is.Chapter Review:Merrett Frey heads toward Oldstones with ransom money to secure the release of his great nephew Petyr. He bemoans his rotten luck that has brought him to this juncture. A concussion as a squire means he can no longer fight and was never knighted. As Walder's ninth son, he's got no hope of rising very far. But at least he can bring back Ser Ryman's son and get some favor that way.He wasn't even involved in the planning for the Red Wedding. His only role was to get the Greatjon Umber drunk. And even in this he failed. Umber fought like a giant before finally being chained. When he arrives at Oldstones, he is robbed of the gold by members of the Brotherhood without Banners. Petyr is already dead and Merrett will join them if they can prove he had a hand in the Red Wedding. Merrett knows that there are no witnesses. But the brothers reveal Catelyn Stark, risen from the dead. Lem asks her if she saw Merrett at the wedding and she, unable to speak, nods. They string him up.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Catelyn Stark - Murdered mother of the Stark children. Welcome to the Covid edition of the pod. Apologies for the scratchy voice, but what can a guy do? In this episode, we pay our usual homage to Plato and Dante, but we also take one of our patented digressions, this time into twentieth century existentialism. You heard it right--we do an extended riff on Sartre's play "No Exit," which is the origin of the phrase "Hell is other people." It's the last line or among the very last lines of the play--the point is, it's the punchline to the whole thing. We talk about how Sartre's meaning is different than modern uses of the phrase, but above all, we look at how the concept "Hell is other people" really does capture Tyrion's experience. I strongly encourage students of Tyrion to check out the play. It's quite short--written during the occupation of Paris, it had to pass the censors, be one act and done before curfew. Other interesting tidbits--Sartre wrote the play after a conversation with Albert Camus--yeah, that Albert Camus--who also played the male lead in the original production. We close with more Socrates discussion, this time comparing Tyrion to the Socrates of Plato's Symposium. The Symposium happens to be my all-time favorite Platonic dialogue, and I highly recommend it to pod listeners, who will immediately recognize the dialogue's influence on ideas of love in Western culture. I massively cut back my Symposium rant, leaving about 15 minutes of discussion about Platonic love, Socrates, Aristophanes and Alcibiades on the cutting room floor--thank me later! Even by my standards, it was the mother of all digressions and had to go. Still working on Lady Stoneheart episodes, so any questions or issues you want to see covered, please do leave a voice message. In Brant Two, GRRM digs deep into his bag of tricks and comes up with...twincest! But this pair of identical twins couldn't be more dissimilar--they disagree on literally everything, except for maybe the need to silence Bran. Speaking of which, Jamie looks to add "kidslayer" to his list of honors/epithets. But let's not make the mistake of having the incident at the very end of the chapter obscure everything that came before--the chapter is in fact about problems of perception and interpretation. Surprise! That also happens to be a key theme in Bran One. So it seems pretty clear based on these two chapters (and insights from the larger series) that Bran's role is similar to that of Ishmael in Moby Dick. That is, he's the (limited) lens through which we view much of the action in the story, and communicates some of the key problems and issues George wants to explore. These include the inescapably subjective experience of seeing and interpreting our reality. Of course, this problem will occur over and over throughout the series and is not exclusive to Bran. But it's clear that it is perhaps the central motif of Bran's character. I've said over and over again that real magic is being able to see with another person's eyes, being able to feel what they feel. Early returns, however, aren't encouraging--George so far seems to be saying that it's difficult, if not impossible, to do so. Bran One and Two say that our understanding is necessarily totally context dependent and incomplete, while Arya One says we can't reliably make others aware of our feelings and experience, at least not with words. Meanwhile, here's Cat Two, earnestly encouraging us to look through different lenses and keep the parallax alive, hoping that maybe, just maybe, we can find a shared meaning. For my part, I'm on Team Cat. Whatever the resolution, I'm virtually certain that this will be an animating source for all the books to come in the series. Note: I'm heavily involved in a Lady Stoneheart episode. LSH as a Dante character. LSH in the context of war literature. LSH in the context of the literature of revenge--emphasis on The Iliad and The Oresteia. And finally, LSH and the contrast between restorative and retributive justice. These are my LSH areas of exploration. If you have questions or avenues you want covered, please do leave a voice message through the Spotify pod message function. Emily and myself return for another ten questions blazing across the entire spectrum of The Winds of Winter! We've got sword names, we've got early exits, we've got the Vale, Stoneheart, and horny Tywin?? No thanks. Specifically, today's questions include: - Unseen locations we finally visit - Who is the next fan favourite (the Nimble Dick award) - The most difficult to predict storyline - What was Tywin up to in Lys? - New valyrian steel swords - Who we think will disappoint the most - Will Sweetrobin survive the book? - What current events could Bran see through the weirwood net? - Could Dany use the Dragonbinder horn? - And what will become of Lady Stoneheart? Thank you for your questions. Thank you for your answers. Keep sending them both in! But before you do join us on the Isle to hear Emily talk on the jumble of King's Landing and where the weirwoods are, I get far too deep into Blackfish talk, and we both have a go at naming some swords! Cut from Game of Thrones, the undead Catelyn Stark aka Lady Stoneheart has been an integral and fascinating part of the ASOIAF books. Her reign of terror over the Riverlands after taking over the Brotherhood Without Banners from Beric Dondarrion is just getting started with The Winds of Winter. Perhaps another Red Wedding is on the table, and a chance to reunite with her long lost son. And definitely hang a lot of Freys. Beric Dondarrion, the Lightning Lord, is one of the most fascinating and tragic characters in all of ASOIAF and Game of Thrones. A young, handsome lord enjoying himself at tourneys turned into a scarred, broken Lord of the Brotherhood without Banners having been resurrected by Thoros of Myr over and over. The wounds that killed him still visible all over his body, and his mind slowly falling apart. A deep dive on Beric, the nature of his undeath, his role in the story so far, and why he choose to give up his own life for Lady Stoneheart. LInk to stream https://youtu.be/Zy4OIQnECvI

In Game of Thrones episode 5, the Bells, Daenerys Targaryen unleashed the full wrath of her anger and her dragon on the people of King's Landing despite their surrender. In this video, I take a look at how she got to the place that she would burn down the city, how her relationship with her brother Viserys looms large over her life, and how we may have finally gotten Lady Stoneheart at along last. The next 3 podcasts, labelled Old Crones Myth Head Roundtable Parts 1-3, are a hybrid of scripted material and live discussion, because I was getting into territory where I felt it advantageous to draw upon the wisdom of the hive mind, so to speak, and it came out really well. You can follow along with the scripted portions the link below. This first installment will dive into several crone figures with old ones symbolism, from Lady Stoneheart to the Ghost of the High Heart to Craster's Wives to Thistle the Wildling. The larger topic will be the connection between Nissa Nissa and Night's Queen, something we were last exploring in Signs and Portals. Featuring Melanie Lot7, Archmaester Emma, Ba'al the Bard, Maester Merry, and Sanrixian. Hope you enjoy, and I'll have the next two out as soon as possible. http://lucifermeanslightbringer.com/2019/03/15/old-crones/

It’s the beginning of the end, and it feels like it. For Game of Thrones, that’s a good thing because the middle was really hard. We’ve been punished enough, and now it’s time for some payoff. Arya seems to be our one-way ticket to instant gratification picking up her murder tour left off and killing every fucking Frey in the house. It’s great. Here’s to hoping our favorite Stark keeps the upper hand. Beric Dondarrion, Thoros of Myr and the Hound talk of resurrection. They really dig into the details. BUT FOR WHAT!? If Arya is exacting some kind of analog for Lady Stoneheart’s revenge, then why do they keep on about coming back from the dead? What does it mean, nerds? Our other lone lady wolf, Sansa is as strategic as ever and without apology. Her agency is a stark contrast to seasons past (you see what I did there?), and it is refreshing. As the clans in the North come together to battle Winter and the Night King, Sansa is still playing the game of thrones. Let’s hope the twisted ways of Kings Landing don’t pollute the Stark family reunion. Still, we get my favorite line of the episode as Sansa interrupts Littlefinger’s continued attempts at manipulation. Alas, the shiniest North star continues to be Lady Mormont as she turns gruff, filthy, violent men into submissive toddlers. I am pretty sure she is the one with all the magic. Yo, Night King, come at her, bro! We also got to see… The book thief Euron Greyjoy channeling his best Douche Tormund’s twinkle eyes Blackberry wine & Ed Sheeran Logs burning and zombies walking "Wun Wun" Walkers Blood on the pages, guts on the table A bald cunt and a top knot That Catspaw dagger Mothafuckin' Dragonstone We’re so happy to have the band back together and we hope you are too. What did we miss? What do you hope to see this season? Tell us your great theories for the future of Westeros! We’ll respond to your comments and questions on the next show.
Kate and Dan analyze the climactic finale of the first season of Game of Thrones with two episodes directed by Alan Taylor. Bucking the trends of conventional TV plot arcs, this pair of episodes might as well have been a 2 hour film with all of its rising action and sweeping resolutions. Hear our hosts discuss Jorah's mysterious peacock scabbard, some prophetic Lady Stoneheart moments, and the perpetual dampness of Frey fashion.

In an exquisitely orchestrated series of unexpected events, we are left sated and curious. Who knew Game of Thrones could still surprise us? And even after reading fan theory upon fan theory, (sound, thorough theories) the show still managed to take us into uncharted territory while confirming the most popular GoT theory of all… R+L=J. I think we all knew that to be true, but it certainly feels validating to see it on screen. A Song of Fire and Ice surely has more than one meaning, but the key players are Dany and Jon. Sidenote, baby Jon is just as brooding as resurrected Jon. Cute. Jon’s parentage is an important reveal, but the true twist of the episode is the face-off at Riverrun as Arya Stark fed Walder Frey his sons, looked him square in his dispicable face, and killed him exactly how her mother was killed. And then she smiled. I am forced to face the reality that Lady Stoneheart was a heavy-handed Red Herring that gave us her psychopath second daughter to exact the revenge we know is due. I didn’t expect it, but I am at peace with that turn of events. I have long-loved Arya, and this feels good. That does not make me any less wrong. So, you know what that means, right? Yeah, I sing Justin Bieber on this episode because watching Firefly would have been way harder. I am sorry. Listeners of past episodes understand why this had to happen. Beyond the giant elephants of Jon and Arya, the finale served up… • The greatest costume Cersei has ever worn • Scary little birds • Wineboarding • Confessions of a mad queen • A library to end all libraries • The reflecting pool at Dorne • Unnerving passages of time • Sansa’s impeccable evolution • Lady Mormont is the best campaign manager EVAR The Winds of Winter was a phenomenal episode, and gave us much to discuss. I hope you stick around for the entire show as we recap the episode, recall moments that led up to these, and conject about what’s to come. Oh, and you know we read all of your comments, too. The face-off between Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton, after a series of unequivocal gut punches in favor of the bad guys, filled my heart with kind of hope and anticipation typically reserved for child birth. So, when HBO Now decided to fucking crash at 9:00 pm EST on Sunday night, I (and the entire Twitterverse) had a Cersei-sized tantrum. I cleared my cache. Logged out. Logged back in. Rebooted my device. Rebooted my wireless router. Uninstalled. Reinstalled. Refreshed. To no avail. HBO Now was down for over two hours, and as much of a First World Problem as that is, I was goddamn pissed off. All I could do was tweet my nerd rage. I also had to tell Dana and Peter that I couldn’t record the podcast that night. We collectively apologize for the podcast being up a bit later than usual. Blame HBO Now. As a consolation prize, here are some hilarious tweets. #ichooseviolence I did finally get to watch the episode at about midnight, and OMFG! Historically, Game of Thrones saves the best bits of its seasons for last. In this case, the creators of the show outdid themselves. Battle of the Bastards may be the most well-crafted episode of the series to date. I was blown away. • There is some serious lady power on the rise: Dany, Yara and Sansa are on FIRE! • Who else is shipping Dany and Yara, btw? • Can we talk about Lady Mormont’s exquisite resting bitch face? • Poor Davos • Tormund and Smalljon, though • Piles and piles of bodies • Jon Snow is a killing machine • Ramsay does one, last incredibly shitty thing • Sansa’s smile made it all worth it There is only one thing that could make this season better, and her name is Lady Stoneheart. Let’s all pray to the Seven Gods and the Lord of Light for her ghastly reveal in the season finale or else I might actually quit the show. OK. Maybe I won’t quit the show, but there better not be any wildfire laying around if she doesn’t show up. #burnthemall Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to leave your comments, questions or fan theories in the comment section below – and we will respond to them on the next show. Warning: This podcast contains spoilers for the Game of Thrones episode, “Blood of my Blood.” For a Game of Thrones episode titled “Blood of My Blood,” there was surprisingly little blood. We saw the return of Benjen Stark (aka: Cold Hands), and caught a glimpse of the Mad King’s death. We also witnessed some sneaky political maneuvers by the High Sparrow, who seemingly check-mated the Lannisters and Tyrells. Arya Stark remembers her name – and where she buried her sword, Needle; and we meet Samwell Tarly’s dad, who won’t be winning any “Father of the Year” awards anytime soon. “Oh, and have you met my dragon?” – Daenerys to the Dothraki “Blood Of My Blood” represents a number of turning points for the season – especially for Dany and Bran – as we begin to step into new and uncharted territory for the series. The Game of Thrones podcast crew of Dana, Vanessa and Peter dig deep into the fan theories that turned out to be true, and speculate about where the remainder of Season 6 is heading. However, we all agree that it was yet another great episode this season, and (thankfully) not as traumatic as last week’s. Also Discussed: We’re reminded that Walder Frey is still alive and needs to be killed, violently Edmure is also alive and being used as a pawn…but to what end? Jaime and Brienne are headed to the Riverlands – and Vanessa is positively giddy over the prospect of Lady Stoneheart’s possible arrival onto the show Sam grows a pair and steals a Valyrian steel blade from his prick of a father Arya is seemingly out of that spooky death cult and is, hopefully, going to make her way back to Westeros with her list of names and trusty Needle in hand Thanks for tuning in, and be sure to send your comments, questions or fan theories to dana (at) stimulated boredom (dot) com, and we will respond to your email on the next show!
