There are a lot of American films that have covered wars from the point of view of the soldier. In this episode, we cover a pair of films that covered real-life wars from the point of view of the journalists who were sent to cover the events. Unfortunately these journalists learn that it's tough to be objective when they discover that they're taking sides just a little more than they initially thought. First we have Under Fire (1983), directed by Roger Spottiswoode and starring Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman and Joanna Cassidy. It's set in Nicaragua in the late 1970s. Next up is 1997's Welcome to Sarajevo, directed by Michael Winterbottom and starring Stephen Dillane, Woody Harrelson and Marisa Tomei. The episode is long because we have so much to talk about (we're still working on cutting it down some; hang in there and thanks for being patient.) COMING ATTRACTIONS: Reel 25 takes a look at two conspiracy thrillers from the 1970s: First is The Parallax View, from 1974, followed by Winter Kills, from 1979 (and again a few years later). An actor's film, Oldman gives his all and totally disappears in his role as Churchill, aided in no small part by Kazu Hiro's incredible and seamless prosthetic effects work. Occasionally bogged down by the weight of it's own subject matter, the film's momentum is buoyed by the inclusion of the likes of Kristin Scott Thomas, Stephen Dillane, Ben Mendelsohn and Lily James in supporting roles.

Patty Jenkins NEWS OF THE WORLD Tom Hanks is the captain again for a sec…thir…fourth time as Captain Kidd - A Civil War veteran who fought for the south who now travels around reading the news of the world to people in different towns if they have a dime and an evening to spend.  Hi co star, Helena Zengel is terrific as Johanna- an orphaned girl with nowhere to go.  They travel hundreds of miles on a pretty breathtakingly beautiful journey across the south to find what is left of her family only to realize the cliched and inevitable conclusion.  One of the best middle of the road films of the year.  (6/10) SOUL Disney Pixar films need no introduction, and this one is no exception.  Jaimee Foxx and Tina Fey head up this emotional and colorful ride as we follow Joe (Foxx) has lost his passion for music and, through spoiler heavy moments, is separated from his body and must find his way back, while also helping a soul with potential to learn who she is and her passions.  Some WONDERFUL moments await you as well as a great score.  One of the better Pixar resume items.  (8/10) WONDER WOMAN 1984 Patty Jenkins, WHAT HAPPENED?  That’s certainly an appropriate question.  Wonder Woman (2017) was, in many ways, a huge success.  Box office and critically success found Wonder Woman in droves.  Well paced, well acted and very well directed- certainly the best of DC as far as the DCEU is concerned.  Yet WW1984 is almost the opposite of the qualities listed above.  Gal Gadot, Chris Pine both reprise their roles and are joined by Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig.  We now fast forward to the 80’s where Diana must face two new enemies: Max Lord and the Cheetah.  If you’re a fan or have fond memories of the 80’s then this movie is absolutely for you, because it isn’t for anyone else.      Hosted, produced and mixed by Grayson Maxwell and Roger Stillion.  Guest appearance by Christopher Boughan.  Music by Chad Wall.  Quality Assurance by Anthony Emmett. With Mark Lawson. Writer Jeanette Winterson discusses her new novella, The Daylight Gate, which is based on real characters from the notorious Pendle witch trials from 1612. The story shows how politics, religion, magic and superstition were gruesomely intertwined following the Gunpowder Plot against James I - especially in Jeanette Winterson's home county of Lancashire. Danish TV drama The Killing was an international hit - as was the jumper worn by its main character. Its director Birger Larsen is now making his UK debut with Murder, a crime drama set in Nottingham starring Stephen Dillane. Larsen and the co-creator of Murder, Robert Jones, talk about the series - and there's a revelation about that famous knitwear. As the US presidential election grows nearer, musicians are entering the campaign. Both Ry Cooder's latest album Election Special, and new wave band Devo's new song Don't Roof Rack Me, Bro! (inspired by Mitt Romney's road trip with the family dog in a kennel strapped to the car roof) seem timed for maximum political impact. Music writer David Hepworth joins Mark to discuss what does and doesn't work in political songs, and whether they ever do more than preach to the converted. Producer Nicki Paxman.
