See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Funk you!
Over the past three years, several seemingly frozen conflicts (Sudan, Russia/Ukraine, Israel/Gaza, Armenia/Azerbaijan, etc) have broke out into hot conflicts that are challenging the current international order. There is, however, one of the longest standing potential flashpoints that has not entered the fray, but is listed as one issue that could embroil the world. That is the unresolved issue of cross-strait relations between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC), also known as the island of Taiwan. For more than seventy years, the question of who controls Taiwan has simmered just under the surface of geopolitical tensions, as the PRC continues to claim control of Taiwan, while recognizing that reunification is necessary (the juxtaposition here is insightful). The ROC continues to maintain that the political status of Taiwan can only be decided by the people of Taiwan, who currently support maintaining the status quo (having their own democracy, while not openly trying to claim full independence). In this episode we speak with Director General Charles Liao of the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in Boston. As the US and Taiwan do not maintain official relations, they do not maintain an embassy or series of consulates throughout the US, so these offices act as the representatives of the ROC in the US. Listen to gain insights into the current state of cross-strait relations and how the ROC views their relationship with the PRC. This becomes increasingly important as the PRC continues to ramp up military drills surrounding Taiwan, increasing the chances for a miscalculation or accident that can lead to all out war. In an age where military might has returned to the global stage as a way to resolve conflicts, the question of Taiwan and how to encourage a diplomatic resolution remains one of the most important of the day.As mentioned in the podcast introduction, if you are interested in learning more about what foreign policy might look like as the United States enters a second term for President Trump, please watch our conversation with Dan Negrea of the Atlantic Council and co-Author of "We Win, They Lose: Republican Foreign Policy and the New Cold War". You can watch the RECORDING HERE.Charles Liao is the Director-General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston. Prior to assuming his current position on August 3rd 2023, Mr. Liao was Deputy Secretary-General of the Taiwan Council for U.S. Affairs, seconded to Foreign Minister's Office, from 2020 to 2023.From 2014 to 2020, Mr. Liao served in Washington, D.C. as First Secretary and then Deputy Director at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States. He was Section Chief in the Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2010 to 2013. From 2004 to 2010, Mr. Liao served as Senior Consular Officer at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles.Mr. Liao earned a Bachelor of Arts in Diplomacy from National Chengchi University in 1999. Mr. Liao is married to Nicole Chang and they have two daughters, Norah and Carice.
Our guest in this episode graduated with an MBA from Harvard Business School, and yet, early on in her career realized that her college degree and her subsequent Ivy-league education weren't enough to advance her career. This realization led her to her mission to decode the unwritten rules of success. For over 20 years Carice Anderson helps professionals understand themselves more fully, build better relationships and have more fun and more impact at work. She is the author or the book, Intelligence Isn't Enough: A Black Professional's Guide to Thriving in the Workplace.

Her narrative is a tapestry woven with the threads of family values, spiritual richness, melodious tunes, and scholarly pursuits. Your ears will be treated to tales of her South African adventures, where cultural revelations broadened not just her horizons but her very essence. As a bonus, Carice generously offers a beacon of guidance for the fledgling professionals among us, sharing the wisdom gleaned from her own slip-ups with the written word as her wand. This session is a treasure trove for anyone seeking to polish their leadership luster or amplify their success signals. Carice and I muse over the myth of the solitary victor and celebrate the symphony of collaboration, emphasizing how embracing our weaknesses can open doors for others' strengths to flourish. As you soak in these words, you'll discover the groundwork for a thriving, collective ecosystem where authenticity and fellowship reign supreme.Support the show
When it comes to diversity in today's workplaces, understandably much of the focus is on systemic challenges members of various marginalized groups have to deal with. But as my guest in this episode of my Leadership Biz Cafe podcast points out, that doesn't mean there aren't measures Black professionals can take at the individual level so they can succeed and thrive in today's corporate environment. Carice Anderson is a seasoned corporate leader and executive, having worked at numerous organizations including Deloitte, Korn Ferry, McKinsey & Company, Aon-Hewitt, and has worked with top companies like Google, Bloomberg, JP Morgan Chase and Bain & Company. I've invited Carice to join me on my podcast to talk about her book “Intelligence Isn't Enough: A Black Professional's Guide to Thriving in the Workplace” so that Black and non-Black leaders can learn from her insights about how Black employees can be empowered to succeed and thrive as members of their team. Over the course of my conversation with Carice, we spoke about: What is the Black Tax and how it impacts the productivity and perception of Black and non-Black employees. An examination of the “three major corporate muscle groups” Black professionals need to flex and develop to succeed in the corporate world. The mindset shift Black professionals need to make to have a healthier relationship with failure. How Black professionals tend to prioritize degrees over work relationships and why they need to change their focus to get ahead in the corporate world. The advantages of looking for sponsors and not just mentors to help elevate your career. Why we need to think of “difficult conversations” as “courageous conversations” and how to be more effective in having them. https://open.spotify.com/episode/3lvQR0oSdyqoknhVVmENwn?si=7515197b09c9430a Noteworthy links: Buy Carice's book “Intelligence Isn't Enough” on Amazon.* Learn more about Carice's work - cariceanderson.com *sponsored link that helps to support this podcast.

Starting a career or a new job does NOT come with a manual. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for adapting to a new workplace. There are multiple factors to adjust to, including workplace dynamics, organizational values and practices, and new responsibilities. This transition might take a long time before you can actually feel comfortable and stable in your new environment and role. You have the smarts and skills to succeed, but do you know what else is important? To really thrive, you have to be aware of and understand the expectations and perspectives of others. Self-awareness and emotional intelligence are keys to climbing the corporate ladder or leading an organization.Gracing the podcast this week is Carice Anderson, career woman and author of Intelligence Isn't Enough, A Black Professionals Guide to Thriving in the Workplace. “You need to surround yourself from an inclusion standpoint, with people who fill in the gaps and complement the skills you don't have so that you don't have those blind spots.” -Carice Anderson Building a business is never easy, and yet we often make it so much harder for ourselves by believing we can't be truly successful unless we are the ones doing everything. This kind of thinking only leaves us with skill and knowledge gaps we didn't even know we had. Being intelligent alone isn't enough. There will always be things we are drawn to and things we don't like doing. What matters is the ability to recognize when we have gaps and fill them with people who complement the skills we lack. Carice Anderson, a workplace diversity and inclusion expert and author, is this episode's featured guest. She has spent her career working to understand why even after achieving so much academically, there were still so many gaps that could only be filled by the experiences of others. She speaks powerfully about the need to build connections between people. To work on your relationships with others, not just in them. To think in the long term about people, not just in the short term to meet a deadline or push a product. If you are trying to go it alone and finding that maybe you don't even know what questions you should be asking, this is the episode to get you thinking about how a mindset shift might open up a world of possibility. During this interview, you'll learn...
